Maddie McGinnis, an eighth-grade student at St. James Catholic School in Millstadt, was concerned about violence against police, and after the death of St. Louis County Police Officer Blake Snyder, she wanted to do her part to help out. Maddie designed a yard sign supporting police officers — “We Support Our Local Law Enforcement” — and then she started spreading the word. She thought she would sell 100 signs, but the demand was twice that, and then a second order for another 200 signs came in. With larger orders, she was able to make more money per sign, and in the end, Maddie raised $2,130 for BackStoppers, which provides financial support for law enforcement ...

It has only been a little over one month since four Carroll High School sophomores announced their plans to solicit donations for the Carroll Police Department’s K-9 unit. In early April, Kayde Nissen, Merkl Kauch, Tyler Tuning and Tyler Comstock expanded on a class project that only called for them to come up with a fundraising idea. They put that plan into action, and though the Carroll Police Department has not had a K-9 in service since 2007, Chief, Brad Burke, reports they are getting much closer. As of Tuesday, the K-9 fund has raised $6,375. The fundraising efforts continue as the cost of acquiring and training a new K-9 officer can be up to or more than $20,000. For those ...

3 inspiring stories of citizens supporting police

Three recent gems of underreported “good news” show that pro-cop sentiment does exist in American citizens, and you can see it plainly if you look hard enough. The anti-police sentiment which now pervades our public discourse — particularly in mainstream national press and on social media — is not an accurate reflection of how the majority of Americans feel about their law enforcement officers. I am of the opinion that the overwhelming majority of Americans appreciate and admire their police officers. However, I think they’re a silent majority. Most law-abiding citizens proceed with their daily lives without even thinking about their police. People are more prone ...

When two San Diego police officers were asked to go check on the welfare of a teenager outside of a high school just before 3:30 a.m. Saturday, they arrived quickly. They immediately saw the teenager in question. “As the officers got out of their patrol cars to contact the male, the male pulled a handgun that was concealed in his waistband and pointed it at one of the officers,” police said. Both of the officers immediately drew their weapons and told the teenager to drop the gun. The 15-year-old refused to comply, and the cops eventually fired, striking the boy numerous times. The teenager was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead. After the shooting, police realized the ...

Families, victims of officer misconduct say Cleveland police reform is still necessary (video)

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made it clear that he feels the types of large-scale police reform efforts undertaken by Barack Obama's Justice Department, much like the binding federal agreement with Cleveland's police department, are unnecessary. For the people affected by past misconduct by officers within Cleveland police, reform is more important now as it has ever been. The city entered into its consent-decree agreement with the Justice Department in May 2015. In doing so, it acknowledged its police department had problems that warranted a drastic reworking in how it operates and how officers interact with residents. People like Cleveland Police Patrolmen's ...

The Justice Department indicted four people on Tuesday, charging three former New York Police Department officers and a former Brooklyn prosecutor for alleged involvement in a corruption scheme to speed up the acquisition of New York City gun permits. Three retired police officers and a former prosecutor were charged Tuesday in a corruption investigation into New York City's gun-licensing agency. The charges say gun-licensing expediters bribed police officials to obtain gun permits. The city's gun permits are distributed by the New York Police Department, and some seeking the permits turn to expediters to help speed up the process. Complaints revealed Tuesday by the Justice ...

Epic Drug Lab Scandal Results in More Than 20,000 Convictions Dropped

A mass dismissal of wrongful convictions ─ perhaps the biggest ever ─ unfolded in a Boston courthouse on Tuesday, as prosecutors in seven Massachusetts counties dropped more than 21,000 low-level drug cases tainted by the work of a rogue lab chemist. The number of corrupted convictions was so unwieldy that the district attorneys used compact discs to deliver lists of cases they were dropping and those they believed they could successfully re-prosecute. By day's end, just a few hundred cases involving the disgraced chemist, Annie Dookhan, remained. The exact number may not be clear until Wednesday, when the court finishes processing the lists. The American Civil ...

Maricopa County's "Tent City Jail" gets the axe

Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio routinely pointed to the notorious, outdoor Tent City Jail he opened in the 1990s as a symbol of his "tough on crime" stance. Inmates live in tents through the sweltering Arizona summer heat and are issued old-fashioned striped prison jumpsuits and pink underwear. Now, it's shutting down. "This facility is not a crime deterrent, it is not cost efficient, and it is not tough on criminals," newly-elected Sheriff Paul Penzone told reporters at a news conference Tuesday. "This facility became more of a circus atmosphere for the general public." Penzone said. "Starting today, that circus ends and these tents come ...

“Somebody Got shot right now….I Gotta Go, But I’m Not Gonna Go” In a troubling 51-second YouTube video that reportedly has gone viral among members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, an on duty LASD deputy appears to deliberately ignore a “gunshot victim” radio call. As the video opens, the deputy—who has been identified as 26-year-old Jeremy Fennell—lounges in what appears to be the driver’s seat of his stationary patrol car talking on camera to a female friend when, all at once, his radio screeches to life, and the voice of an LASD dispatch operator puts out a call to Lakewood patrol cars about a 417, person with a gun. ...
