An NYPD detective scored freebies and raked in money running a private security company from his precinct. His bosses didn't care. Post Date: 2023-08-08 00:05:48 by Charles_Byrd

For years, Deborah Giaco was a beloved technology aide for a small Long Island school district, praised by colleagues for her "warm and caring nature." On paper, though, she was also the owner of a security company that touts ties to the Secret Service and claims to have a roster of trained agents with experience as bodyguards, bomb detectors, hostage negotiators and SWAT team members. But while Deborah Giaco owned the company on paper, her husband Stephen, then an NYPD detective, was in charge. According to two former colleagues, Stephen Giaco ran the company, D. Sterling, from the Midtown North precinct where he was based, using public resources for his private benefit. Click ...

NEW YORK CITY reached a historic settlement this week on behalf of more than 1,300 people who were attacked by police while protesting the police killing of George Floyd in 2020. The plaintiffs claimed that the New York Police Department violated protesters civil and constitutional rights by making mass arrests, using excessive force, using pepper spray improperly, and using a tactic called kettling to trap and arrest protesters ahead of an imposed curfew. The mother of a young Black man killed by Seattle police in 2017 is outraged and demanding an apology after learning officers kept a mock tombstone marking her sons death on a shelf in a precinct break room. The room at the Seattle Police Departments East Precinct also was decorated with a large Trump 2020 flag, in possible violation of state law and department policy regulating officers involvement in partisan politics while on duty. A top official has vowed to hold accountable any state trooper found to have intentionally submitted faulty data to Connecticuts racial profiling system, but is cautioning that focusing on the negative would be an injustice to law enforcement. Outrage over Times’ journalism exposes LAPD’s ignorance of a free press, experts say Post Date: 2023-08-07 22:45:21 by Charles_Byrd

In a routine act of journalism Saturday, two Times reporters went to the home of a Los Angeles police officer to see if she wanted to comment for a forthcoming news article. The article, they told her, would publicly name her for the first time as one of the LAPD bomb squad technicians whose botched fireworks detonation blew up a residential block in South L.A. in 2021. Their reporting was significant because the explosion which damaged dozens of buildings, injured 17 people and cost taxpayers millions of dollars fueled deep anger in the community and complaints about a lack of transparency around the responsible officers. A disturbing pattern of sexual misconduct has come to light within the Placer County Sheriff's Department, further reinforcing the already tainted image of America's security force. A deputy was arrested on suspicion of forcible rape and sodomy of an intoxicated person, marking the second arrest for a sex crime in the department within a mere 48 hours. This alarming pattern is not isolated to Placer County. According to the National Police Misconduct Reporting Project, sexual misconduct ranks as the second highest of all citizen complaints nationwide against police officers, at 9.3%. Shockingly, the study also found that the rate of sexual misconduct among officers was ...

Despite Animal Rescuers Being at the Scene, Cops Shoot 2 Family Dogs, Claiming They Held Up Traffic Post Date: 2023-05-31 16:43:55 by Charles_Byrd

In yet another terrible display of state authority over compassion, police carried out a despicable act of puppycide this past Saturday. A pair of dogs found wandering loose on Interstate 84 near Heyburn became the latest victims in the alarmingly frequent incidents of law enforcement officers discharging their firearms on man's best friend. This act of thoughtless violence occurred near exit 211 just before 6 p.m., a news release from the Heyburn Police Department revealed. Cops on scene alleged that the animals were causing traffic to grind to a halt and posed a safety hazard. According to the release, "The speed limit of this section of interstate is 80 miles per hour and ...
Review: Animal Control Pokes Fun at Real-World Policing Problems Post Date: 2023-05-26 18:43:44 by Charles_Byrd

When your colony of pet rabbits accidentally eats magic mushrooms, who you gonna call? Hopefully not the characters on Animal Control, the new sitcom that debuted on Fox in February. Responding to that situation in one early episode, the officers eventually corral the tripping bunnies, then decide to confiscate the rest of the unfortunate owner's shroom stash for their personal use. Asset forfeiture is no laughing matter. But the show uses the low-stakes environment of animal control duty to poke fun at the real problems of self-interested cops and the unaccountable public systems that protect them. Main character Frank Shaw (Joel McHale) is a former policeman who got drummed out of ...

Looking at the present, with each passing day, I see a very probable future: a new despotism creeping slowly across America. Faceless oligarchs sit at command posts of a corporate-government complex that has been slowly evolving over many decades. In efforts to enlarge their own powers and privileges, they are/were willing to have others suffer the intended or unintended consequences of their institutional or personal greed. For Americans, these consequences include chronic inflation, recurring recession, huge unemployment, the poisoning of air, water, soil, and bodies, and, more important, the subversion of our constitution. More broadly, consequences include widespread intervention in ...

How the FBI Took an Innocent Woman’s Savings Post Date: 2023-03-10 01:16:30 by Charles_Byrd

The Federal Bureau of Investigation regularly seizes cash, cars and other valuables that belong to people who arent accused of any crimes. Months later, many of those people receive a dense, boilerplate notice stating that the FBI plans to keep their property forever, without any explanation of whya blatantly unconstitutional practice. Thats what happened to Linda Martin. When the FBI took her life savings from a safe-deposit box during a 2021 raid of US Private Vaults in Beverly Hills, Calif., she assumed her money would be returned. The companys alleged wrongdoing had nothing to do with her. But several months later, sheand hundreds of other innocent people ...

This fall, just as Keith Kaplan was finishing up his first term as a town councilman in the New York suburb of Teaneck, New Jersey, he proposed a Reasonable Childhood Independence bill. It states that when parents allow kids to perform age-old independent activities, like walking or playing outside, they are not committing negligence unless the the kids are in obvious, serious, and likely danger. For Kaplan, the bill is especially important. That's because of an incidence he witnessed involving his friends, their daughter, and the police. Click for Full Text!

A new lawsuit alleges that an Ohio woman suffered a broken wrist and other injuries after being violently arrested during a traffic stop, in part due to filming the police who pulled her over. In February 2020, Amanda Mills was pulled over for speeding in Walton Hills, a small town outside Cleveland, Ohio. According to the suit, a police officer, identified in the lawsuit only as "Officer Schmidt" exited his cruiser "irate" and "screaming." Nervous, Mills began recording the encounter. Schmidt ordered Mills to get out of her vehicle. According to the suit, "Amanda asked 'why?' without making any other statement or any sudden movement. At this ...
