Thought experiment: what if Trump carried New York?
Post Date: 2016-01-04 12:08:28 by Tooconservative

Clearly taking some time off has left the imps in my lizard hind brain with far too much time on their hands, but an interesting question came to me this morning as I reviewed more of the news I missed during the week between Christmas and New Years. There were a fair amount of laughs being had when AP posted some demographic information last week which showed that some of Donald Trump’s supporters were actually registered as Democrats. Hilarious, right? Sure. But the data that study was drawn from came from this piece in the New York Times. Let’s take another look at that map that the Times generated which showed where Trump’s support is the strongest. Yes, The Donald has ...

What Went Wrong With Rand Paul?

A year ago, Trump was a joke and Paul was rising. But now that their fortunes have flipped, is it fair to say libertarianism is finally dead? So this is the year that libertarianism, a political philosophy advocating minimal government across the board and thus annoying as hell to both conservatives and liberals, finally up and died. Not really, but that’s the new official story, at least as told by media types who have been prophesying the end of libertarianism for as long as they’ve been writing. There’s a superficial plausibility to the charge, especially among those who confuse partisan politics with the real America. Among high-profile Democrats and Republicans, the ...

Gov. blasts Stokes' call for violence against police

Gov. Phil Bryant calls “reprehensible” Jackson Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes’ statements suggesting that rocks, bricks and bottles be thrown at police officers from other jurisdictions who chase misdemeanor suspects into Jackson. “Mr. Stokes’ remarks are reprehensible, particularly with the attacks we have seen against our men and women in law enforcement,” Bryant said in a statement late Friday. “I condemn any such remarks in the strongest possible manner. This is nothing short of an outright assault upon all who wear the badge. I will be asking Attorney General Jim Hood to investigate whether Mr. Stokes’ remarks represent criminal threats ...

Carly Fiorina is pandering so hard to Iowans, she wants the Hawkeyes to beat her alma mater

Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard chief executive and current candidate for the Republican nomination for president, is a 1976 graduate of Stanford University, whose football team is playing in Friday's Rose Bowl. This must be exciting for Fiorina. How many times does a university alumna get to watch her own alma mater play in the granddaddy of all college football bowl games, right in that school's home state? Pretty awesome, I'd bet. Except, Stanford is playing Iowa. And the Iowa caucuses – the first official voting in the presidential primary electoral process – are one month from Friday. Surely, that has nothing to do with Fiorina's view of this ...

Trump’s strongest Republican supporters: Registered Democrats?

That’s odd. What could Democrats possibly see in a lifelong true conservative like Donald Trump? There’s something for everyone in Nate Cohn’s new post. If you’re a Trump fan, here’s the smoking gun that he really is a new Reagan, the guy who’s going to broaden the tent and sweep to victory in November by bringing centrist Democrats into the GOP. If you’re a Trump critic, here’s further proof that he’s the RINO of RINOs, a man who’s blended nationalism, center-left economics, and Jacksonian foreign policy into something that tastes better to members of the other party than it does to conservatives. That sounds a lot like Perotism, frankly ...

Jeb Bush Blames Obama for Rise of Trump

Jeb Bush called Donald Trump "a creature of Barack Obama" in the latest example of the former governor's ever-present frustration with the billionaire businessman during an interview with NPR. "But for Barack Obama, Donald Trump's effect would not be nearly as strong as it is," Bush said. The comments come as Bush continues his full assault on Trump over the past several weeks questioning everything from his rival's seriousness to intellectual prowess. However, Bush expressed optimism to NPR that "the emotion of the here and now" with Trump "will subside." "The point is that we're living in this reality TV political ...

Trump: If Hillary Brings Up Sexism, Bill Clinton Is ‘Fair Game’

Sunday on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends” Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said if the Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton attacks him as sexist, it is “fair game” to bring up her husband former President Bill Clinton’s indiscretions. Trump said. “I think he’s fair game because his presidency was considered to be troubled, to put it mildly, Because of all the things she’s mentioning to me. She actually said sexism, I don’t know if you saw the following tweet, but I turned her words against her from that standpoint. She’s got to be careful and fair. Calls for "leadership" are unsavory, dangerous, and un-American.This incessant clamoring by voters and punditry for better "leaders" and more "leadership" is one of the most unsavory, dangerous and un-American tendencies in political discourse. When Donald Trump was asked last week by Joe Scarborough what he made of an endorsement from Vladimir Putin—a thug who's probably murdered journalists and political opponents and more—the GOP presidential front-runner responded, "He's running his country, and at least he's a leader, unlike what we have in this country." Then he offered an incredibly dumb moral equivalency about how the ...

Kurt Russell: I'm Not a Republican, I'm Worse. A Hardcore Libertarian

While making the rounds promoting his star turn in Quentin Tarantino's new film The Hateful Eight, Kurt Russell told The Daily Beast's Marlow Stern that he's frequently had to deny his long-rumored association with the Republican Party. AVCO Embassy Pictures The truth, Russell says, is actually far worse: I wasn’t a Republican, I was worse: I was a hardcore libertarian. As Reason's Nick Gillespie has noted, Russell's politics have been coming up in interviews more frequently, mostly thanks to his unwavering support of the Second Amendment. But Russell rarely discusses his broader libertarianism publicly and, he tells the Beast, he has a policy of ...

At New York Magazine, Ed Kilgore looks at the battle between the grassroots and the establishment within the GOP.It’s hard for a political party to self-diagnose its problems when its thinkers are at odds about the nature and extent of the current symptoms. That’s the condition of the Republican Party, which began this presidential cycle highly confident about consolidating power gained at the congressional and state levels during the last two midterms with the capture of that last Democratic redoubt, the White House. Some Republicans think that is still the party’s trajectory, and dismiss the craziness of the early GOP presidential contest as an illusion or a temporary ...

Hillary Clinton's team is unsettled by what Bernie Sanders' staffers might have seen in their sneak peek. MANCHESTER, N.H. — Accusing your opponent of committing evil and unpardonable crimes is basic presidential campaign jujitsu. But Hillary’s Clinton’s team is genuinely jittery about the sneak peek taken by Bernie Sanders staffers into their secret voter file. The unauthorized fishing expedition into the database housing the names and demographic information of voters Clinton plans to target – which led to the sacking of a top Sanders staffer and the suspension of two more — has embittered the campaigns against one another, even if the two principals ...
