In a field brimming with candidates, the University of Virginias Larry Sabato and his associates contend in the pages of Politico Magazine, the conventional wisdom is that the Republican presidential nomination is up for grabs in 2016. But is it? Hardly, they write: [The] closeness of the race is a mirage, a false projection of the reality that exists just below the surface. At this very early stage, when every week more candidates declare, the public is mainly not engagednot even the select contingent of voters that will turn up to cast ballots in the caucuses and primaries. Republicans are hungry to reoccupy the White House, and the realistic among them ...

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a federal sex discrimination lawsuit on behalf of a Virginia high school student who has been prohibited from using the boys bathrooms and locker rooms on school premises. The student plaintiff, 16-year-old Gavin Grimm, attends Gloucester High School in quiet, coastal Virginia, reports the Daily Press of Newport News. The reason school officials have prevented Grimm from using facilities reserved for boys on campus is because Grimm was born a girl and by all accounts remains a girl. Nevertheless, Grimm, her family and the ACLU want a court order forcing the local school district to allow Grimm to use boys bathrooms at Gloucester High School. ...

Study: San Francisco to Be ‘Lily White’ Enclave in 25 years Post Date: 2015-06-10 08:46:38 by cranky

San Francisco prides itself on its image as a bastion of diversity and progressive politics. But according to a new study by the San Francisco Foundation, the citys policies are rapidly ejecting blacks, Latinos and Asians to become a lily white island in a heavily diverse region over the next 25 years. The study found that the population of African Americans in San Francisco was 13.4 percent in 1970. That made blacks the second largest ethnic group compared to whites at about 75 percent of the population. But by 2000, blacks share had fallen to about 8%, and by 2013 to just 6.1 percent of city residents. Whites fell to 50 percent, due to Asians moving up to 34 ...
In a Grim, Fairy Tale World, ‘Transgender’ Gives Way to ‘Transabled’ Post Date: 2015-06-08 18:32:25 by cranky

If you thought that transgender was the ultimate manifestation of a society ever more unhooked from sanity, then you havent met the latest wave of transabled folkhealthy people who identify with the disabled and maim themselves to achieve their dream. Unfortunately, this isnt somebodys sick joke. Where identity becomes relativized to the point that people are who they imagine and project themselves to be, everything is possibleand facilitated by an all-abetting culture. Just ask One Hand Jason, a man who in 2008 intentionally cut off his right arm with a very sharp power tool. Having never quite accepted his arm as part of ...

How long does it take for an expert who has, year upon year after year, made predictions of unrealized doom, an expert hailed heeded and hearkened to by the whole world, to admit error? Answer: forever. He never will, and neither will most of his admirers. This is important to understand let this sink into your bones because this sad but true fact about the human condition tells us how long global warming will be with us. Answer: forever. It will last until the last of it proponents die. Which, given improvements in medical practice, will be at least several more decades. No one said this pithier than Max Planck: Science advances one funeral at a time. The increased and ...

State Department spokesperson Marie Harf said she was perplexed by a New York Times story Tuesday on Irans 20 percent increase in nuclear fuel over the past 18 months. The United States has been in negotiations with Iran for a final deal about their nuclear program. The International Atomic Energy Agency issued a report on Friday that documented an increase of Irans nuclear fuel stockpile. A reporter asked Harf if Irans increased stockpiles has complicated the current negotiations. Not at all. Our team read that story this morning and was quite frankly perplexed because the main contentions of it are totally inaccurate, Harf said. Harf ...

Obama said, People dont remember, but when I came into office, the Untied States in world opinion ranked below China and just barley above Russia, and today once again, the Untied States is the most respected country on earth. Part of that I think is because of the work we did to reengage the world and say we want to work with you as partners with mutual interests and ...

Justice Stephen Higginson, the lone dissenter of the Fifth Circuit Court decision to deny the Obama administrations appeal to lift a stay of his executive amnesty, cited the countrys supposed history of racism and xenophobia in his dissenting opinion. On the expedience of immigration measures, sensible things can be said on all sides, mindful that our country is an immigrant society itself, he wrote in his conclusion, including a footnote to a book by Judith Shklar on citizenship. Over twenty years ago, Judith Shklar observed in her book American Citizenship, aptly subtitled The Quest for Inclusion, that the United States has an extremely ...

Is having a loving family an unfair advantage? Friday 1 May 2015 1:19PM Joe Gelonesi Plato famously wanted to abolish the family and put children into care of the state. Some still think the traditional family has a lot to answer for, but some plausible arguments remain in favour of it. Joe Gelonesi meets a philosopher with a rescue plan very much in tune with the times. So many disputes in our liberal democratic society hinge on the tension between inequality and fairness: between groups, between sexes, between individuals, and increasingly between families. The power of the family to tilt equality hasnt gone unnoticed, and academics and public commentators have been blowing the ...

During a conversation about poverty, President Obama said he was concerned that more wealthy people were separated from poverty because they chose to frequent private institutions instead of public ones. Part of whats happened is, is that elites in a very mobile, globalized world are able to live together, away from folks who are not as wealthy, and so they feel less of a commitment to making those investments, he explained during a panel discussion on poverty at Georgetown University today. Obama criticized the free-market system in America for allowing higher concentrations of wealth to exist among the rich while the bottom percentage was being left behind and ...

County Poor Farms Post Date: 2015-05-11 09:16:15 by tpaine

www.wvencyclopedia.org County Poor Farms Before the welfare reforms of the New Deal, county farms, also known as county infirmaries or poor farms, played a major role in the care of people who because of poverty, infirmity, or old age were unable to care for themselves. Early West Virginia law followed Virginia precedent, making counties responsible for care of the poor. At first, county governments appointed overseers of the poor, who were to see that the indigent received adequate care. Most counties found that the overseer system worked haphazardly and turned to the establishment of a county farm, where any person in need might live in the countys care. The farms were operated by ...

For decades now, those concerned about global warming have been predicting the so-called tipping point the point beyond which itll be too late to stave off catastrophic global warming. It seems like every year the tipping point is close to being reached, and that the world must get rid of fossil fuels to save the planet. That is, until weve passed that deadline and the next such tipping point is predicted. Would you believe it was eight years ago today that the United Nations predicted we only had as little as eight years left to avoid a dangerous global average rise of 2C or more. This failed prediction, however, has not ...
