How should government handle increasing violence and civil unrest in the Occupy movement? (1243 votes) Two words: SWAT teams 30% (372) No illegal activity should be countenanced 20% (249) The government should stop giving them aid and comfort, as Obama and others have done 14% (175) It should make them follow the law, just like anyone else would have to 12% (150) A few well-directed fire hoses would cool their plans a little bit -- and make them smell better 9% (118) Law enforcement should come up with plans, because this is getting uglier by the day 5% (60) Authorities should protect people and property, but allow the protests to run their course 2% (28) Winter's ...

Heres your mom, kids. Proud? The hippie Florida mother of four who ditched her children and banker husband to sleep in Zuccotti Parks squalor hit rock bottom yesterday when she was hauled off in handcuffs, her dreadlocks flying wildly in every direction, for blocking a street near the New York Stock Exchange. Stacey Hessler, 38, was lifted off the pavement in the center of Broad Street by three cops who slapped plastic bracelets on her wrists and dragged her away kicking and screaming. What did I do? What did I do? she kept shouting. She was charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct after she blocked vehicular and pedestrian traffic and ...

(CNSNews.com) - When asked to comment Wednesday about the deaths and crimes that have occurred around Occupy protests being held across the country, Rep. Maxine Waters said thats life and it happens. Thats a distraction from the goals of the protesters, Waters, who says she supports the Occupy movement, told CNSNews.com after an event at the Capitol sponsored by the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Let me just say this: Anytime you have a gathering, homeless people are going to show up, said Waters. They will find some comfort in having some other people out on the streets with them. Theyre looking for food. Often times, the ...

Court order allows Occupy Wall Street protesters back Hundreds of police officers in riot gear raided Zuccotti Park early Tuesday, evicting dozens of Occupy Wall Street protesters from what has become the epicenter of the worldwide movement protesting corporate greed and economic inequality. Hours later, the National Lawyers Guild obtained a court order allowing Occupy Wall Street protesters to return with tents to the park. The guild said the injunction prevents the city from enforcing park rules on Occupy Wall Street protesters. At a morning news conference at City Hall, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city knew about the court order but had not seen it and would go to court to fight ...

Protesters did little to resist as police took down tents in Chapman and Lownsdale Squares, according to The Oregonian. Portland Commissioner Nick Fish said the two parks would likely be fenced off later Sunday and closed to the public for about a week. About 3,000 people gathered in the streets around the parks as the 12:01am Sunday deadline to leave the parks -- demanded by Portland Mayor Sam Adams -- approached. An ...

Makana, who goes by one name, was enlisted to play a luau, or Hawaiian feast, Saturday night for leaders assembled in Obama's birthplace Honolulu for an annual summit that is formulating plans for a Pacific free-trade pact. But in the midst of the dinner on the resort strip Waikiki Beach, he pulled open his jacket to reveal a T-shirt that read "Occupy with Aloha," using the Hawaiian word whose various meanings include ...

Arpaio has been not only investigating the authenticity of Obamas birth records, of which three different ones have been released by the White House, but he is also investigating the reports that Obama is using someone elses Social Security Number. He has told the White House that they need to authorize the Department of Health in Hawaii to open up all of the original paper and ink documents concerning Obamas birth to an independent court-authorized forensic examination. With wintry weather poised to swoop into the cramped outdoor quarters of Occupy Wall Street protesters, it may not be long before more campers catch what's being called "Zuccotti lung." That's what demonstrators have dubbed the sickness that seems to be spreading among them at an unpleasantly high rate these days: "It's a real thing," Willie Carey, 28, told the New York Times. With little sleep in cold conditions, cigarettes and drinks being passed from mouth to mouth, and few opportunities to wash hands, Zuccotti ...

by Capitol Confidential When Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) was convinced by a retailing giant to enact legislation imposing price controls on credit card transactions he engineered a massive wealth transfer from credit card companies to retailers a cost that would ultimately be borne by consumers. Opponents of Durbins fee warned of the consequences of his actions including increased costs for consumers and elimination of credit card incentive programs. As Milton Friedman said, there is no free lunch. After the government imposed their fee cap, the marketplace responded predictably. 2 deaths at Occupy protests in Calif. and Vermont OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Police are investigating a fatal shooting just outside the Occupy Oakland encampment in Northern California and the apparent suicide of a military veteran at an Occupy encampment in Vermont's largest city. The Oakland killing is further straining relations between local officials and anti-Wall Street protesters. A preliminary investigation into the gunfire Thursday that left a man dead suggests it resulted from a fight between two groups of men at or near the camp on a plaza in front of Oakland's City Hall, police Chief Howard Jordan said. Investigators do not yet know if the men in the fight were associated ...

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- In Oakland, Occupy protesters gathered Wednesday night and voted to withdraw a resolution calling for future demonstrators to remain peaceful. A small number of the protesters have openly called for the use of violence as a tactic to get their message out. The vote by the group came just hours after Oakland city leaders called for the camp at Frank Ogawa Plaza to shut down immediately. City officials have also cut off streetlights at the camp as well as a faucet protesters had been using to get water. Also Thursday, Oakland City Council President Larry Reid told ABC7 News that the council may take a "no confidence" vote for Mayor Jean Quan.

The Obama administration said Thursday it is delaying a decision on a massive oil pipeline until it can study new potential routes that avoid environmentally sensitive areas of Nebraska, a move that likely puts off final action on the pipeline until after the 2012 election. The announcement by the State Department means Calgary-based TransCanada Corp. will have to figure out a way to move the proposed Keystone XL pipeline around the Nebraska Sandhills region and Ogallala aquifer, which supplies water to eight states. The State Department said it will require an environmental review of the new section, which is expected to be completed in early 2013. President Barack Obama said the 1,700 ...

A man has been arrested for allegedly attacking a paramedic and breaking his leg at the Occupy Wall Street site Wednesday night. Police say paramedics were called to Zuccotti Park for a man who was acting irrationally. When they arrived, the man in question appeared to be in emotional distress and police decided he needed to be taken to the hospital. But he refused to be placed in the ambulance and pushed one of the EMTs into a ladder, fracturing the EMT's leg. The man is being charged with assault. Earlier in the day, Mayor Bloomberg defended the protesters as law-abiding folks who keep to themselves and don't cause trouble. "I will say, in all fairness to the people down ...

OAKLAND (CBS/AP) A group of Oakland anti-Wall Street protesters who blame large banks for the economic downturn have decided that one of those institutions is the best place to stash their money for now. Protesters at an Occupy Oakland meeting Monday voted to deposit a $20,000 donation into a Wells Fargo account. The move comes just days after one of Wells Fargos branches was vandalized during a massive downtown demonstration. An Occupy statement said the money only will be with Wells Fargo temporarily while they work to establish an account with a credit union or community bank. Protesters said it was the easiest way to access the money to bail out people from jail. Wells ...
