When House members departed last weekend for summer vacation, they handed a painful choice to senators left behind in 100-degree Washington heat. The haughty Senate could either rubber-stamp two complicated bills passed by the House or face real-life consequences. When it took the former course, the Republican-controlled Congress again had abandoned conservative doctrine. This abandonment bears the imprint of Rep. Bill Thomas, the domineering House Ways and Means Committee chairman, in his farewell congressional performance. He combined GOP-sought estate tax relief with the minimum wage increase long blocked by Republicans as job-killing wage fixing. In accepting this, Republican lawmakers ...

Rumsfeld Testifies to Senate About Iraq WASHINGTON The top U.S. military commander in the Middle East told Congress on Thursday that "Iraq could move toward civil war" if the raging sectarian violence in Baghdad is not stopped. "I believe that the sectarian violence is probably as bad as I have seen it," Gen. John Abizaid, the commander of U.S. Central Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee. He said the top priority in the Iraq war is to secure the capital, where factional violence has surged in recent weeks despite efforts by the new Iraqi government to stop the fighting. Abizaid, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and other top military officers ...

"War Is Over" billboards promote Lennon film Wed Aug 2, 2006 11:08 AM ET By Nicole Sperling LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - In an effort to tap into anti-war sentiment, billboards will appear in New York and Los Angeles this month declaring "War Is Over! If You Want It." The statement is not so much political as commercial: independent film distributor Lionsgate is using them to promote its documentary "The U.S. vs. John Lennon," set to open September 15 in both cities. The billboards are a reproduction of those created and posted by Lennon and wife Yoko Ono in 11 cities in 1969 as a protest against the Vietnam War. The documentary from filmmakers ...

A third of U.S. public believes 9/11 conspiracy theory More than a third of the American public suspects that federal officials assisted in the 9/11 terrorist attacks or took no action to stop them so the United States could go to war in the Middle East, according to a new Scripps Howard/Ohio University poll. The national survey of 1,010 adults also found that anger against the federal government is at record levels, with 54 percent saying they "personally are more angry" at the government than they used to be. Widespread resentment and alienation toward the national government appears to be fueling a growing acceptance of conspiracy theories about the 2001 attacks on the ...

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Bombings and shootings killed up to 58 people in Iraq on Tuesday, including at least 26 soldiers, undermining the new government's attempts to show it can suppress the unremitting violence. A roadside bomb attack on a bus filled with Iraqi troops on a road between Tikrit and Baiji, north of Baghdad, killed at least 23, the army said. In the northwestern town of Tal Afar, a car bomb killed three more Iraqi soldiers and wounded four, police said. A British soldier was killed in a mortar attack on an army base in the southern city of Basra, a British military spokesman said. In Baghdad, a suicide bomber in a car targeted soldiers collecting their salaries from a bank, ...

Bush Adminstration Pursuing Globalist Agenda The hottest issue at the grass roots is illegal immigration and what our government is not doing to stop it. The question most frequently heard is, "Why doesn't the Bush administration get it?" Maybe the Bush administration doesn't want to stop the invasion of illegal immigrants and plans to solve the problem by just declaring them all legal through amnesty and guest-worker proposals. Maybe the Bush administration is pursuing a globalist agenda. Consider this chronology. On March 23, 2005, President Bush met at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, with Vicente Fox of Mexico and Paul Martin of Canada in what they called a summit. The ...

The tours of 4,000 U.S. soldiers who had been scheduled to leave Iraq in the coming weeks have been extended for up to four months, signaling that there would almost certainly be no significant troop withdrawal before the end of the year, military officials and analysts said. The extension is part of the new security plan that President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki of Iraq announced last week in Washington. The plan entails sending thousands of U.S. and Iraqi troops to the capital from elsewhere in Iraq to bolster the forces in the capital. Since the new Iraqi government was installed in May, sectarian violence has spiraled out of control in many parts of ...

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Four U.S. marines have been killed in action in restive Anbar province, the U.S. military said on Sunday. The marines, assigned to Regimental Combat Team 7, died on Saturday. No further details were available. The casualties followed the deaths of four other marines in Anbar, west of Baghdad, on Thursday. U.S. President George W Bush last week boosted U.S. troop levels in Iraq after increasingly savage sectarian violence raised fears that the country could slip into civil war.

July 29, 2006 As he campaigned for Republicans running for Congress in West Virginia, President George W. Bush confidently predicted that his party will retain control of Congress but with his approval ratings mired in the 30s, gas prices topping $3, war spreading in the Middle East and Iraq in turmoil, some in the GOP are nervous. "Realistic Republicans know the storm is coming," said Nathan Gonzales, editor of the Rothenberg Political Report. "The question is: How big is it going to be, and can they brace themselves enough to keep the majorities in the House and Senate?" But even with the weakness of President Bush and his Republican allies on Capitol ...

A Pentagon spokesman on Friday confirmed that US troop levels in Iraq rose to 132,000 during the past week the highest since late May from 127,000 at the start of the week However, analysts said an increase in troop numbers was more likely than a reduction because the number of sectarian killings in Iraq had almost doubled since the start of the year. The rise will prompt fears that the US is becoming increasingly bogged down in an unwinnable conflict.

His brother, Army Cpl. Jose A. Velez, 23, died in November 2004 in Fallujah when his unit came under fire while clearing an enemy stronghold. "I can't be angry. Conservative national security allies of President Bush are in revolt against Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, saying that she is incompetent and has reversed the administrations national security and foreign policy agenda. The conservatives, who include Newt Gingrich, Richard Perle and leading current and former members of the Pentagon and National Security Council, have urged the president to transfer Miss Rice out of the State Department and to an advisory role. They said Miss Rice, stemming from her lack of understanding of the Middle East, has misled the president on Iran and the Arab-Israeli conflict. "The president has yet to understand that people make policy and ...

Lebanese President Emil Lahoud said today that he supports the Hizbullah terrorist organization. "I support the Hizbullah because they liberated our land," Lahoud said, adding that the Lebanese army does not have the wherewithal to confront the IDF, but that it will defend Lebanon as much as it can. Hizbullah is a part of the current Lebanese government, with one of its members serving as Lebanon's minister of energy. Lahoud is widely regarded by Lebanese citizens as a Syrian agent in the country's regime.

Last week, during the brouhaha over Bush saying "sh--" in front of an open mic, I confess I was strangely pleased that the guy swears now and then. He was talking to Tony ("Yo Blair") at the G-8 summit in St. Petersburg, and they were discussing the only news of the day that mattered - Israel and Hezbollah and that whole mess. Neither man knew that an open mic was capturing their conversation. When Bush said "What they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this sh--," it seemed like a reasonable sentiment. Everyone ought to stop "doing this sh--," including Bush, who has played his part in worsening the Mideast quagmire. But I'll ...

Civil war won't end until troops leave Iraq By PATRICK COCKBURN THE INDEPENDENT On a bend in the Tigris River in north Baghdad people try to prevent their children from seeing the headless and tortured bodies that drift ashore every day. The number of civilians being killed in Iraq may top 1,000 a week in July after reaching 3,149 in June. The streets are empty in the middle of the day because Sunni and Shiite Muslims are terrified of running into a checkpoint manned by members of the other community who may kill them after a glance at their identity ...
