Opium production in Afghanistan, which provides more than 90 percent of the world's heroin, broke all records in 2006, reaching a historic high despite ongoing U.S.-sponsored eradication efforts, the Bush administration reported yesterday. In addition to a 26 percent production increase over past year -- for a total of 5,644 metric tons -- the amount of land under cultivation in opium poppies grew by 61 percent. Cultivation in the two main production provinces, Helmand in the southwest and Oruzgan in central Afghanistan, was up by 132 percent.
Bush-Maliki Meeting Postponed Until Thursday Post Date: 2006-11-29 13:47:05 by TLBSHOW

AMMAN, Jordan -- President Bush's high-stakes summit with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was put off Wednesday after public disclosure of U.S. doubts about his capacity to control sectarian warfare. The White House said the two leaders would meet on Thursday. The postponement was announced shortly after Bush arrived here for talks with King Abdullah II and al-Maliki. Bush's meeting with the king was to proceed on schedule. White House counselor Dan Bartlett denied that the move was a snub by al-Maliki or was related to the leak of a White House memo questioning the prime minister's capacity for controlling violence in Iraq. "Absolutely not," Bartlett ...

Kissinger: Iraq military win impossible Post Date: 2006-11-19 12:09:49 by RickyJ

LONDON - Military victory is no longer possible in Iraq, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said in a television interview broadcast Sunday. Kissinger presented a bleak vision of Iraq, saying the U.S. government must enter into dialogue with Iraq's regional neighbors including Iran if progress is to be made in the region. "If you mean by 'military victory' an Iraqi government that can be established and whose writ runs across the whole country, that gets the civil war under control and sectarian violence under control in a time period that the political processes of the democracies will support, I don't believe that is possible," he told the British ...

Khalid Chahhou is in his first and, it turns out, final year as a Spanish teacher in Smithfield, North Carolina. http://www.wral.com/news/10347144/detail.html Chahhou, who also teaches Arabic at a religious school affiliated with an Islamic association, attempted a very novel approach to teaching when he gave his students a worksheet in which they were to translate words and find them in a word-search puzzle. In the process of solving the puzzle, students discovered some strange words and phrases. "There were words like 'kill,' then I saw it said 'destroy America,'" one of the students said. Students found that the puzzle contained a paragraph that contained the following ...

Iraq is a 'disaster' admits Blair Blair's most frank admission yet over the war in Iraq came during an interview on the new Al Jazeera English television channel with Sir David Frost Tony Blair admitted that British intervention in Iraq has been a disaster last night - sending shockwaves through Westminster. In his frankest admission about the war to date, Mr Blair admitted that Western forces have been powerless to stop the descent into violence. The Prime Minister stopped short of accepting the blame for plunging Iraq to the brink of civil war - blaming instead the insurgent uprising that has killed 125 British troops. But his admission in an interview with the Arab new channel Al ...

President George W. Bush has just over two years left in office. The central question facing him is: what kind of Iraq will he bequeath to his successor? Will it be a metastasising mess dumped on the doorstep of the next president, or an Iraq on the path to stability and success? The answer will determine how this president should be remembered by future generations. There are, of course, other grave issues that will consume the Bush administration over the next two years: the continuing need to defend Americans from terrorist threats; Irans efforts to acquire nuclear weapons; containment and weakening of a nuclear-armed North Korea; an increasingly belligerent Russia; and manifold ...
The anti-Quagmire Fix for Iraq: George McGovern? Post Date: 2006-11-12 13:18:26 by alwaysontheright

The 2006 mid-term elections would have turned out vastly different if Americans had known that the Democrats' plan for Iraq would be to pick the brain of socialist and former presidential candidate George McGovern. Perhaps McGovern is a harmless lefty these days, but is he the best the Democrats have to offer in the way of ideas and leadership on Iraq? Good grief, the man was rejected by the American people in a landslide victory for Richard Nixon back in 1972. Why in hades does anyone need to hear from this vanquished old liberal 35 years later? Mind you, it is perfectly understandable that Democrats would be wary of input from the likes of Al Gore, John Kerry, or John ...

Iran's Arabic language television station broadcast footage it claimed showed a US aircraft carrier cruising in Gulf waters it said was taken by an unmanned Iranian drone. The brief minute-long film, which was shown on Al-Alam television's evening news bulletin, showed wobbly aerial footage of an aircraft carrier stacked with war planes as it sailed. The television's anchor said the film, the property of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard, showed a vessel from "the US fleet in the Persian Gulf". "A source in the Revolutionary Guard said the drone carried out its mission without US fighter pilots reaching it," the television said. It said there were 10 such films ...

George McGovern, the former senator and Democratic presidential candidate, said Thursday that he will meet with more than 60 members of Congress next week to recommend a strategy to remove U.S. troops from Iraq by June. If Democrats don't take steps to end the war in Iraq soon, they won't be in power very long, McGovern told reporters before a speech at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. "I think the Democratic leadership is wise enough to know that if they're going to follow the message that election sent, they're going to have to take steps to bring the war to a conclusion," he said. McGovern will present his recommendations before the Congressional Progressive Caucus, a ...
Bush and Pelosi to Form Nonpartisan Mensa Chapter? Post Date: 2006-11-09 21:00:55 by alwaysontheright

In the grand tradition of American democracy, President Bush and Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi buried the hatchet, shook hands, and agreed to work together during lunch at the White House. In today's ceremony, the hatchet was figurative only, as the presidents doctor has forbidden him from handling sharp, dangerous objects since around 10 PM on election night. In less civilized societies, a bitter political campaign like the one just concluded in America might find opponents still at each others throats with continued violence a real possibility. In fact, if America were operating under Islamic Shari law, Bush would have had the option of stoning Pelosi to death for failing to ...

ISSAQUAH, Wash. -- A 43-year-old Issaquah school bus driver was fired in September after allegedly "flipping off" President George W. Bush during his visit to Washington in June. Bush was in town to campaign for Rep. Dave Reichert. The two were traveling in a limo headed for Medina when they passed several school buses full of students. The students waved to the president and while waving back the president turned to Reichert and said the driver of one of the buses flipped him off. A week later when Reichert called the Issaquah school district to report the incident he learned that the district was aware of the drivers action and was investigating. The bus driver was ...

A U.S. Army soldier who fled to Canada rather than return to Iraq has disappeared again, this time just a day after surrendering to the military. Pvt. Kyle Snyder, 23, of Colorado Springs, Colo., told The Associated Press he was supposed to return by bus to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., Louisville on Tuesday but didn't go. He said he went AWOL after Fort Knox officials told him he would be sent back to his unit, the 94th Engineer Battalion. Snyder returned to the United States on Saturday, after his lawyer said he had reached a deal to receive an other-than-honorable discharge. "I came back in good faith," Snyder said Wednesday by phone. "I put my trust in them one more time. ...

Only 25 percent of the American people according to the latest Newsweek poll are now "optimistic" about the direction of the war in Iraq; 65 percent are "pessimistic." Why have so many Americans, only now, come to realize that this war has gone bad? Here are some of the reasons: 1) The original rationale for a post-9/11, pre-emptive invasion that Saddam had nukes and other WMD aimed at us and we had to get them before he used them has proven to be knowingly false; this has devastated President's Bush's credibility abroad and here at home. 2) The oft-stated notion that the Iraqi people would throw flower petals at our troops and ...

Historical Perspective on the Bush Family PART I There is no historic parallel that can be drawn, nothing compares with the accomplishments of the Bush family. No dictator or tyrant can equal the suffering and destruction they have wrought on humanity, as they are not mere tyrants themselves, but the makers and breakers of tyrants, the organizers and profiteers of war and death. They are not alone and solely responsible for creating the present day military industrial complex, however since 1915 the Bush family has been directly involved in World War One and Two, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, numerous CIA secret wars, the Gulf War, and now a "Never Ending War". Back in the olden days, America had a president who genuinely cared about defending the U.S. Constitution, our borders, and We the People. Oh, for the good old days of Ronald Reagan! In 2006, America has an alleged president who seems more interested in solving Mexico's economic problems than defending America. Even after the events of 9/11, our president thinks it OK to send 150,000 US troops 8,000 miles from home to defend the borders of extremists who would like nothing better than to see Washington, D.C. reduced to a blue glow, courtesy of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran. At the same time as he frets and spends to protect Iraq's borders, President Bush blindly ignores the ...
Senior U.S. Diplomat Says America Showed 'Arrogance,' 'Stupidity' in Iraq Post Date: 2006-10-21 22:51:51 by TLBSHOW

BAGHDAD, Iraq Offering an unusually candid assessment of America's enterprise in Iraq, a senior U.S. diplomat said the United States had shown "arrogance" and "stupidity" in Iraq, but warned that failure in the violence-ridden Arab nation would be a disaster for the entire region. In an interview with Al-Jazeera aired late Saturday, Alberto Fernandez, director of public diplomacy in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the U.S. State Department, also said the United States was ready to talk with any Iraqi group excluding Al Qaeda in Iraq to reach national reconciliation in the country, wracked by widening sectarian strife as well as an enduring ...

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. With Election Day fast approaching, liberals are being forced to face the fact that for them the notion of "truth" is poisonous. The movement once led by a man who asked "what the meaning of 'is' is" now is telling American voters that they are the people who will really be tough against the terrorists. The problem of course is that this is not true, and anti-war liberals know this isn't true, but the real truth is something they can't own up to. Running TV commercials stressing your desire to "Cut and Run to Okinawa" doesn't exactly instill confidence with the American electorate at a time when ...

THERE'S A STRICT taboo in the column-writing business against recycling ideas. So let me start with something fresh. The Iraq war was a mistake. ADVERTISEMENT Click here to find out more! I know, I know. But I've never said it before. And I don't enjoy saying it now. I'm sure that to the antiwar crowd this is too little, too late, and that's fine because I'm not joining their ranks anyway. In the dumbed-down debate we're having, there are only two sides: Pro-war and antiwar. This is silly. First, very few folks who favored the Iraq invasion are abstractly pro-war. Second, the antiwar types aren't really pacifists. They favor military intervention when it comes to stopping genocide in ...
