Carlos Condit beats Nick Diaz
Post Date: 2012-02-05 11:17:35 by We The People
LAS VEGAS -- Carlos Condit earned the interim welterweight title and a match with champion Georges St. Pierre with a unanimous decision victory over Nick Diaz at UFC 143 Saturday night. "It will be an honor to fight St. Pierre," Condit said. "Georges is a guy I've looked up to since I was a kid, before the UFC." Diaz pressed forward in the second round and appeared to get the better of the punches. But Condit landed leg kicks throughout the fight, and eventually was able to land effective counter strikes, giving him the win on all three scorecards, 48-47, 49-46, and 49-46. "Nick's pace is second to none," Condit said. "Chopping down his legs and ...

Hank Williams Jr. Ditched By ESPN Over Obama Hitler Comments
Post Date: 2011-10-06 14:07:34 by war
Having pulled his iconic Monday Night Football introduction song following his comments on Fox News comparing President Obama to Hitler on Monday, ESPN has announced that they are terminating their relationship with the country star permanently. "We have decided to part ways with Hank Williams, Jr. We appreciate his contributions over the past years," the company said in a statement. "The success of Monday Night Football has always been about the games and that will continue." Williams, however, claims it was his choice to leave, writing on his website: AFTER ESPN SUSPENDS HANK JR. FOR ONE-WEEK, HANK JR. DECIDES TO PULL HIS SONG FROM BEING USED ON ESPN FOR REMAINDER ...
Floyd Mayweather Jr. wins bizarre fight
Post Date: 2011-09-18 01:36:41 by We The People
LAS VEGAS -- Floyd Mayweather Jr. got a head butt, a kiss and a hug from Victor Ortiz. He responded with a right hand that ended a bizarre fight early. Mayweather remained unbeaten and did it in emphatic fashion Saturday night, stopping Ortiz at 2:59 of the fourth round to take the welterweight title Ortiz brought into the ring. The end came just as the two fighters emerged from a break, in which Ortiz had embraced Mayweather in the center of the ring. As they broke, Mayweather shot out a left hand and followed it with a right that put Ortiz down in his corner. Ortiz struggled to get up as referee Joe Cortez called an end to the fight. "We touched gloves and we were back to ...

Camel, ostrich races returning to Ellis Park on Saturday
Post Date: 2011-07-30 12:56:15 by Fred Mertz
After 30 years of traveling the country to present camel and ostrich races, you'd figure that Joe Hedrick would be burned out. But that's not so, said the one-time rodeo clown who returns to Ellis Park with his show for the fourth consecutive year today. For one thing, he never tires of seeing the enjoyment of the crowds. For another, he's never quite certain what he might see. "It's racing, but it's mostly entertainment," Hedrick said Friday, sitting at a picnic table while watching his racing stock in two nearby pens. "Just tell me where else you can go and see an ostrich race or a camel race with the actual track jockeys riding them, even someone ...

136TH PREAKNESS STAKES - Pick a Winner
Post Date: 2011-05-21 11:31:31 by Fred Mertz
PREAKNESS REPORTMAY 20, 2011 by James Scully The Preakness (G1) storyline centers around the Kentucky Derby (G1) winner. ANIMAL KINGDOM (Leroidesanimaux [Brz]) will have the Triple Crown within his sights with a victory, one of the most elusive goals in all of sports, and his performance will dictate the level of interest in the Belmont S. (G1) three weeks later. The last leg of the series loses much of its appeal to the general public when a Triple Crown isn't on the line. The Preakness certainly looks doable for Animal Kingdom. Bred to excel at classic distances, the chestnut colt was overlooked at 20-1 at Churchill Downs primarily because he had never raced on dirt. He answered that ...
Michael Baze Dead: Jockey Found Dead In Vehicle At Churchill Downs
Post Date: 2011-05-11 09:22:20 by Fred Mertz
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A 24-year-old jockey who rode this year's Kentucky Derby second-place finisher to his only win was found dead in his vehicle Tuesday at Churchill Downs. Michael Baze of Glendora, Calif., was pronounced dead at 4:47 p.m. EDT in his vehicle parked in the stable area of the track, Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Jim Wesley said. There were no signs of foul play and the case was being treated as a death investigation, Louisville police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said. An autopsy was planned. Baze was a cousin of Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze, the all-time leading rider in thoroughbred racing, and son of retired jockey Mike Baze, Churchill Downs spokesman John Asher ...
KENTUCKY DERBY PREVIEW - Pick Your Winner!
Post Date: 2011-05-06 23:31:55 by Fred Mertz
Whether a byproduct of skill or luck, selecting the right horse in America's most famous horse race is the goal for any observer. And Saturday's 137th running of the $2 million Kentucky Derby (G1) sets up to be quite a challenge. The road to the 2011 Kentucky Derby has lacked clarity, with major upsets in the Arkansas Derby (G1), Blue Grass S. (G1), Santa Anita Derby (G1), Louisiana Derby (G2) and Wood Memorial (G1) as well as a slower-than-expected winner of the Florida Derby (G1), and that makes it difficult to separate the top contenders. The race feels wide open, with more than half of the 20-horse field having the potential to wind up in the winner's circle, and it's ...
Uncle Mo won't race Saturday
Post Date: 2011-05-06 09:04:48 by Fred Mertz
Uncle Mo will not run in Saturday's Kentucky Derby. Uncle Mo galloped Friday morning at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., without his Derby saddle towel. The announcement was later made at the track. Uncle Mo's owner, Mike Repole, was not present during the morning workout. The sleek bay colt has been recovering from a stomach ailment but has looked good as he galloped in recent days. Last year's juvenile champion, Uncle Mo had been the 9-2 second choice behind 4-1 early favorite Dialed In. On Thursday, Repole was awaiting results from the latest vet exam. "If he's not what we deem to be 100 percent tomorrow, he's not going to be 100 percent on ...
Trump Pulls Out Of Pace Car Duties
Post Date: 2011-05-05 14:41:55 by Skip Intro
'The Donald' Cites Time, Business Constraints INDIANAPOLIS -- Outspoken billionaire businessman Donald Trump has withdrawn as the pace car driver for the 2011 Indianapolis 500 amid growing controversy. In a statement released by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Thursday, Trump cited his presidential bid and increasingly busy schedule for the decision to pull out. I very much appreciate the honor, but time and business constraints make my appearance there, especially with the necessary practice sessions, impossible to fulfill, Trump said. I look forward to watching the race from New York. Some fans claimed "the Donald' would tarnish this ...

Being No. 1 overall doesn't ensure QB success
Post Date: 2011-04-30 23:52:23 by war
For all the pertinent and impertinent questions surrounding Cam Newton before the Carolina Panthers chose him No. 1 overall in last week's grab bag of college talent, the only question now is this: What will he accomplish as an NFL quarterback? Will he soar to the Pro Football Hall of Fame? Will he level off as more solid than spectacular? Will he deteriorate into a backup? Will he be a bust? Over the years, other quarterbacks chosen No. 1 overall, no matter how touted or scouted they were, have been the answers to all those questions. In the 81 previous drafts, counting six American Football League stock shows in the early 1960s, 29 quarterbacks were selected No. 1 overall, but only ...
Early Derby favorites say uncle
Post Date: 2011-04-23 16:53:01 by Fred Mertz
In the often rocky and surprising journey through a Triple Crown season, we generally have a favorite for the Kentucky Derby by now. Nothing certain, mind you, since projecting virtually untested 3-year-olds is risky business indeed. You usually can pick up a clue coming out of the prep races in Florida, Arkansas, New York, Louisiana, and California. But this year was going to be different. There were murmurs of a true contender for the Triple Crown which, of course, hasnt been won since Affirmed swept through the spring in 1978. Uncle Mo was the horse with the big mo (i.e. momentum), coming out of the Breeders Cup Juvenile as an undefeated 2-year-old. Horse racing ...
CINCINNATTI REDS How much faster can a fastball go? The 105 mph fastball is like the 4-minute mile: it's a new barrier to break
Post Date: 2011-04-19 11:55:26 by A K A Stone
Tony Gwynn Jr. summoned his training and experience, but mostly the pedigree bestowed upon him as the son of a Hall of Fame batting champion. Yet, at the moment of truth Sept. 24, staring at Aroldis Chapman's 105-mph fastball, Gwynn did what most of us would do - he froze. "You're not even going to put the bat on the ball," the San Diego Padres outfielder explained to reporters later, not without trimming away the excesses of a normal hitting sequence. You needed a shorter stride and faster hands, maybe even prayer, because there was nothing normal about Chapman's performance against San Diego that night. Not only did the Cincinnati Reds' left-hander make history ...

The goal is to make a world-record jump. Mattel, the maker of Hot Wheels, is calling this stunt "Fearless at the 500." I have been going to the Indianapolis Speedway since I was born.. and I have ...
Tennessee hires Cuonzo Martin

Updated: March 27, 2011, 8:02 PM ET Tennessee hires Cuonzo Martin KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee has hired Missouri State's Cuonzo Martin to take over a Volunteers program facing punishment by the NCAA for recruiting violations. The 39-year-old Martin takes over for the popular Bruce Pearl, who was fired March 21, a month after being charged with unethical conduct for lying to NCAA investigators. Martin went 61-41 in three seasons at Missouri State and was chosen this season's Missouri Valley Conference coach of the year. Missouri State finished 26-9 and won the MVC regular-season championship. Tennessee athletics director Mike Hamilton said Sunday that school officials are ...

Michael Waltrip Triggers 14-Car Wreck Early in Daytona (Video)

Michael Waltrip Triggers 14-Car Wreck Early in Daytona (Video) By Jay Busbee DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. We knew that the two-by-two racing would play a significant role in Sunday's Daytona 500. And we knew that Michael Waltrip would have a significant role on the 10th anniversary of his landmark 2001 win. As it turns out, both storylines blended early in the race, with catastrophic effect. In Lap 29, Michael Waltrip, pushing David Reutimann, got misaligned and spun Reutimann, triggering a wreck that took out literally one-third of the field. Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Brian Vickers, Greg Biffle, Marcos Ambrose and feel-good story Brian Keselowski were among those collected in the ...

Super Bowl Fans Scramble As Flights To Dallas Canceled Because Of Another Winter Storm
Post Date: 2011-02-04 11:43:50 by Brian S
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Super Bowl fans may have to scramble for alternate flights after American Airlines and its regional carrier canceled 630 flights to and from its Dallas hub on Friday because of another winter storm. Snow continued to fall in Texas two days after a massive winter storm grounded flights throughout the nation. More than 100,000 football fans were expected to converge on Dallas for the face-off between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers on Sunday. "We've had snow overnight and this morning," said Tim Smith, spokesman for American Airlines. Smith said the main runways at the airport are open, but ramps and taxiways "are a bit messy." ...
The Great American Stickup: How Reagan Republicans and Clinton Democrats Enriched Wall Street While Mugging Main Street
Post Date: 2011-01-29 15:55:05 by Godwinson
The Great American Stickup: How Reagan Republicans and Clinton Democrats Enriched Wall Street While Mugging Main Street [Paperback] Robert Scheer From Publishers Weekly Following Ronald Reagan' s obsession with the radical deregulation of financial markets through its apotheosis under the Clinton administration to Obama' s reform efforts--which rely, oddly enough, on Clinton cronies to clean up (and profit from) the mess they made--Scheer (The Pornography of Power) proves that, when it comes to the ruling sway of money power, Democrats and Republicans, Wall Street and Washington make very agreeable bedfellows. Scheer names names (Robert Rubin, Lawrence Summers, Alan Greenspan), ...
