Umpire admits he missed call that would have ended game BY JOHN LOWE, FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER By either inches or because of a missed call, right-hander Armando Galarraga missed throwing the first perfect game in Tigers history tonight. Galarraga had retired all 26 Cleveland hitters when, with two out in the ninth, rookie Jason Donald sent a grounder into the second-base hole. First baseman Miguel Cabrera broke and fielded the ball and threw to Galarraga covering first. First-base umpire Jim Joyce ruled that Donald was safe. VIDEO OF THE CONTROVERSIAL CALL Galarraga could only break into a smile. Manager Jim Leyland argued the call. Television replays appeared to show that ...

Martin Garcia's journey from Pleasanton deli cook to Preakness-winning jockey is a sensational, storybook tale. Here comes the sequel. A week from today, he will be riding in New York's Belmont Stakes, aboard the Bob Baffert-trained Game On Dude. "I want to be (the best jockey), and I know it is not easy to be that," Garcia, 25, said Friday in a phone interview. "I've told myself I can do it and that I just need a chance to show I can." He sure put on a show at the Preakness two weeks ago. He rode Lookin At Lucky to victory in that Triple Crown race, posed for pictures in the winner's circle and got interviewed on national television. He looked a ...

In all the years I covered Terry Bradshaw, I cant remember once ever having reported that he threw an interception in practice. I cant remember having written about Terry Hanratty, Joe Gilliam, Mike Kruczek, Cliff Stoudt, Mark Malone, Bubby Brister or Neil ODonnell having thrown an interception in practice, or that any of them threw a touchdown pass in practice, either. At some point in my time covering the Jaguars I think it started in the Byron Leftwich years I actually began counting practice interceptions and touchdown passes and, for the life of me, I cant imagine why. Interceptions and touchdown passes in practice? You gotta be kidding me. David ...

WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court today turned away the National Football League's request for broad antitrust law protection, ruling that the league can be considered 32 separate teams -- not one big business -- when it comes to selling branded items like jerseys and caps. The high court unanimously reversed a lower court ruling throwing out an antitrust suit brought against the league by one of its former hat makers, who was upset that it lost its contract for making official NFL hats to Reebok. American Needle, Inc. sued, claiming the league violated antitrust law because all 32 teams worked together to freeze it out of the NFL-licensed hatmaking business. The company lost and ...

Rankings: Are Cowboys ready to finally make a playoff run? By Pat Kirwan | NFL.com Senior Analyst Trying to rank NFL teams from 1-32 is close to impossible in September, let alone in May, but it is always a good exercise to think about where the teams are right now. I prefer to look at teams in five groupings, rather than a pure ranking from top to bottom. Of course an injury to a Peyton Manning or a Tom Brady would drop their respective teams at least a tier or two. Vote: Rank all 32 teams Now it's your turn to play the expert. Be the voice of the fans by sharing your rankings to determine the order of NFL Network's "32 Teams in 32 Days" series that begins June 7. More ...
Texas Rangers File for Bankruptcy Post Date: 2010-05-24 12:31:44 by reaganisright

The Texas Rangers have filed for bankruptcy protection. It did not have to come to this. But by favoring a sale of the team from Tom Hicks to a group led by Chuck Greenberg and Nolan Ryan rather than a richer, better capitalized deal that was being offered, Major League Baseball angered Hicks' creditors who stood to get shafted by the sale to the Greenberg group. Now the Greenberg deal is dead, Tom Hicks is reeling from an insane amount of debt and MLB may have to fund the team like it did last season. One must ask: What was Commissioner Bud Selig thinking?

May 12, 2010 Celtics Stun Cavs, Take 3-2 Lead in Series By TOM WITHERS :AP Sports Writer CLEVELAND (AP) -- His team down by 27 points and a promising season suddenly in peril, LeBron James walked off the floor to a smattering of boos and rows of empty seats. If this was goodbye Cleveland, it wasn't the send-off he imagined. The Boston Celtics have pushed the two-time MVP and the Cavaliers dangerously close to an early start to the Summer of LeBron. LOUISVILLE, Ky. Likely favorite Eskendereya is out of the Kentucky Derby. Trainer Todd Pletcher pulled the 3-year-old colt out of next weekend's race due swelling in his left front leg. Eskendereya stamped himself as the horse to beat after romping to wins in the Fountain of Youth and the Wood Memorial by a combined 18 1/4 lengths. He was scheduled to work at Churchill Downs on Sunday morning, but Pletcher opted to keep the muscular chestnut colt in the barn while sending his other Derby entries out on the track. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to announce Wednesday that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be suspended for violating the league's personal-conduct policy. NFL Networks Jason La Canfora is reporting that the ban is likely to be for 4-6 games, with a sliding scale based on circumstances, including some component of counseling. That would mean Roethlisberger would not be eligible to play in games against the Atlanta Falcons (home), Tennessee Titans (road), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (road) and Baltimore Ravens (home) to open the season. The Steelers have a bye in Week 5. If the suspension lasts the full six games, Roethlisberger also would miss a Week 6 ...

Bejarano will ride Line of David Line of David was out for his first workout since posting his 17-1 upset in the April 10 Arkansas Derby when he breezed five furlongs in 1:02 Tuesday, but most of the buzz about the John Sadler-trained colt concerned his jockey situation. Sadler said Tuesday that Rafael Bejarano will ride Line of David in the Derby, replacing Jon Court, who picked up the Arkansas Derby ride on short notice. Bejarano, who leads all North American jockeys in earnings in 2010 with more than $4.2 million, teams up often with Sadler on the Southern California circuit. "We felt for this race we would go with our home-team player," said Sadler. Exercise rider Lupillo ...

However, the ad is receiving some very mixed reactions, and may end up making things worse. March 23 (Bloomberg) -- The National Football League changed its overtime rules for postseason games to increase the chances of both teams playing offense. Owners voted 28-4 to require the first team with the ball to score a touchdown to win the game immediately. Currently, the first team to score any points wins. If the first team playing offense kicks a field goal, the other team gets the ball. If the score is still tied after that teams possession, play continues in the existing sudden-death format and the next points win the game. Indianapolis Colts President Bill Polian said the new rule would help defenses. If they can hold the team that gets the ball first to a field ...

NEW YORK (AP) -- NFL owners will vote next week whether to allow each team a possession in overtime in the playoffs if the team winning the OT coin toss kicks a field goal on the first series. Previously, the game would end whenever either side scores, as happened in the NFC championship game in January, with New Orleans beating Minnesota on Garrett Hartley's kick. But NFL competition committee chairman Rich McKay says a trend has developed showing too strong an advantage for teams winning the coin toss to start overtime. If the team that falls behind by three points on the first series also kicks a field goal, then the game would continue under current sudden death rules. The ...
