(Reuters) - Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent was arrested for drunk driving and charged with manslaughter on Saturday after a car he was driving crashed and killed teammate Jerry Brown Jr, in the second tragedy involving NFL players in a week. Police in the Dallas suburb of Irving said that Brent, 24, was driving at high speed on a state highway at 2:21 a.m. when the car slammed into an "outside curb, causing the vehicle to flip at least one time before coming to rest in the middle of the service road." Brown, who had been in the passenger seat, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital a short time later. Brent suffered "minor scrapes" and was booked into the ...

Tigers Trounce Yankees, Handing Them First Postseason Sweep Since 1976

DETROIT -- Ninety-five wins, an AL East title and an ALDS victory never looked this empty. Not when all of that is followed by getting swept by the Tigers in four games of the ALCS. Despite talk of how they would bravely fight their way out of a very deep ditch Thursday, the Yankees went quietly into the off-season with an 8-1 beating that was witnessed by a sold-out Comerica Park crowd of 42,477. The Tigers will face the winner of the NLCS between the Cardinals and Giants. The last time the Yankees were swept in a four-game series was by the Reds in the 1976 World Series. CC Sabathia's slow walk from the mound to dugout were the Yankees' first steps into a winter that will be ...

DETROIT -- Pit a nearly untouchable pitching staff against a slumbering offense and it is a recipe for a sweep. The pitching-rich Tigers are on the verge of sweeping the struggling New York Yankees right out of the postseason after Justin Verlander allowed just one run on three hits over 8 1/3 innings to lead Detroit to a 2-1 victory Tuesday night in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series at Comerica Park. BOX SCORE: Tigers 2, Yankees 1 The Tigers could finish the best-of-seven series Wednesday and win their first AL pennant since 2006 when Max Scherzer faces Yankees ace CC Sabathia in Game 4 at 8:07 p.m. ET. Tigers starting pitchers combined to pitch 21 1/3 shutout innings ...

Here’s what media members are saying about the New York Yankees after the Detroit Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the American League Championship Series: Jeff Passan, Yahoo Sports: “New Yorkers understand a fraud when they see it. They pay for expensive seats, drink overpriced beers, buy exorbitant merchandise and fund a $200 million joke, a team that for the second straight game couldn't score a measly run off the Detroit Tigers' Nos. 3 and 4 starting pitchers. These Yankees earned every last boo.” Mike Greenberg, ESPN’s “Mike and Mike in the Morning: “The Yankees have hitters who are striking out more than 50% of the time they come to the plate. Alex ...

LANSING, MI - A disease blamed for killing more than 4,000 deer in Michigan is not going to stop hunting seasons this year, the state’s Department of Natural Resources reiterated Monday. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease has been confirmed in 24 Michigan counties since this summer. The viral disease causes extensive internal bleeding and is transmitted by a type of biting fly called a midge. The counties where deaths have been reported are generally in the southern half of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The DNR expects more dead deer will be found as farmers harvest their crops and hunters take to the field this year. But the first hard frost should kill the flies that have transmitted ...

NFL To Use Replacement Officials For Week 1

NEW YORK (AP) -- The NFL will open the regular season next week with replacement officials and said it was prepared to use them "as much ... as necessary" afterward. Replacements will be on the field beginning Wednesday night when the Dallas Cowboys visit the New York Giants in the season opener, league executive Ray Anderson told the 32 teams in a memo. Negotiations are at a standstill between the NFL and the officials' union. The NFL Referees Association was locked out in early June and talks on a new collective bargaining agreement have gone nowhere. Replacements have been used throughout the preseason, with mixed results. In 2001, the NFL used replacements for the first ...

NCAA Hands Out Severe Punishment For Penn State

Chastising Penn State's athletic culture, NCAA President Mark Emmert issued a landmark ruling this morning, crippling Penn State's ability to compete on the field for years to come by banning the football team from a postseason bowl for four years, eliminating a total of 40 scholarships over four years and fining the school $60 million. Emmert also stripped Penn State of its wins between 1998 and 2011, meaning that former coach Joe Paterno is no longer major college football's all-time winningest coach. A total of 111 have been erased from Paterno's previous win total of 409. "This is an unprecedented, painful chapter in the history of intercollegiate athletics," ...

Mark Emmert, president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, said in an interview with the Public Broadcasting Service yesterday that he is awaiting Penn State’s response to the investigation conducted by former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Louis Freeh. The report released last week said the school’s top executives, including former university President Graham Spanier and football coach Joe ...

Many of us like watching races in the company of other NASCAR fans, but Linda Chase of Jackson, Mich., might have taken that just a bit too far. For the past 10 years, she lived together with Charles Zigler. And when Zigler passed away, they continued to live and watch NASCAR together for approximately 18 months until authorities found Zigler's body on Friday. Zigler, known as Charlie, died naturally, Linda Chase said. "He just fell asleep." She kept him in his chair after he died, keeping him dressed and cleaned. His body did not stink, she said. She would talk to him and watch NASCAR races on television with him. Jackson officials believe that Zigler, who would have been ...

Roger Clemens Acquitted On All Charges

Roger Clemens has been acquitted on all charges by a jury that decided he didn't lie to Congress when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs. Jurors returned their verdict Monday after close to 10 hours of deliberation. The outcome brings an end to a 10-week trial that capped an expensive, five-year investigation into one of the greatest pitchers in the history of baseball. The 49-year-old Clemens was accused of perjury, making false statements and obstructing Congress when he testified at a deposition and at a nationally-televised hearing in February 2008. The charges centered on his repeated denials that he used steroids and human growth hormone during his 24-year career. The ...

Lance Armstrong Charges: Why New Doping Allegations From USADA Are Different
Post Date: 2012-06-14 13:09:40 by Brian S

Charges of doping have long followed seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. Now the cyclist is facing those charges again, this time from a quasi-governmental agency, the United States Anti-Doping Agency, and there are a number of reasons why the new claims are different than the others Armstrong has faced over the last decade. For one, Armstrong, who has focused on triathlon competitions since his retirement from cycling, cannot compete in Ironman France, a triathlon set to start later this month, because of the allegations. The claims haven't even been proven, yet the 40-year-old Armstrong, who won the Tour de France seven times and is a cancer survivor, won't be able ...

"This morning, he looked perfect. I took him and did a little something with him and after training, the swelling came back." O'Neill also said that the horse looked like it was suffering from tendinitis. I'll Have Another was looking to win the first Triple Crown since Affirmed took ...

Judging by his appetite and appearance, Bodemeister has rebounded nicely from his vigorous trip in the Kentucky Derby and is ready to shine at the Preakness. Bodemeister finished second in the Derby and has been installed the favorite in Saturday's second jewel of the Triple Crown. "I've had some horses, they run (and then) they don't eat for a few days and they sulk in the stall or whatever," Bodemeister trainer Bob Baffert said. "But he's a pretty tough horse. He just bounced out of it really well. If you watch their weight over their rumps, that's where they usually lose it if they can't handle what you're giving them. He filled out nice and ...

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton was suspended without pay for the 2012 season by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was banned indefinitely on Wednesday because of the team's bounty program that targeted opposing players. Handing down sweeping and serious punishment for a system that paid out thousands of dollars when hits knocked specific opponents out of games, Goodell also suspended Saints general manager Mickey Loomis for the first eight regular-season games next season, and assistant coach Joe Vitt for the first six games. In addition, Goodell fined the Saints $500,000 and took away their second-round draft picks this ...

New York Giants Rally To Beat Patriots for Super Bowl Victory INDIANAPOLIS -- Take that, Brady. You too, Peyton. Eli Manning is the big man in the NFL after one-upping Tom Brady and leading the New York Giants to a 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots in Sunday's Super Bowl -- in older brother Peyton's house, at that. Just as Manning did four years ago when the Giants ruined New England's perfect season, he guided them 88 yards to the decisive touchdown, which the Patriots didn't contest as Ahmad Bradshaw ran 6 yards with 57 seconds left. Patriots coach Bill Belichick reasoned the Giants would run the clock down and kick a short field goal, so he gambled by ...
