Cancer cells feed on fructose, study finds Post Date: 2010-08-04 23:51:34 by A K A Stone

WASHINGTON Pancreatic tumor cells use fructose to divide and proliferate, U.S. researchers said on Monday in a study that challenges the common wisdom that all sugars are the same. Tumor cells fed both glucose and fructose used the two sugars in two different ways, the team at the University of California Los Angeles found. They said their finding, published in the journal Cancer Research, may help explain other studies that have linked fructose intake with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancer types. "These findings show that cancer cells can readily metabolize fructose to increase proliferation," Dr. Anthony Heaney of UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center and ...
Doctors Educated Outside U.S. Outperform Home-Grown Physicians Post Date: 2010-08-04 12:10:00 by Brian S

U.S. patients of doctors who went to medical school outside the country and werent American citizens had a 9 percent lower death rate on average than those whose doctors trained at home, a study showed. The report, published today in the August issue of Health Affairs, tracked the performance of primary-care doctors, internists and cardiologists in 244,153 hospitalizations involving congestive heart failure or heart attacks. Economics may help explain the gap in patient outcomes, said John Norcini, co-author of the study. Internal medicine and primary care have failed to attract the best U.S. students because of lower pay, relative to other specialties, he said. Primary care ...

Britain's fattest woman dies of heart attack after junk food binge in hospital bed Britain's fattest woman has died from a heart attack after her family smuggled takeaways and junk food into her hospital room, it has been revealed. Junk food addict Sharon Mevsimler, 40, weighed 45 stone and needed an oxygen mask due to the strain her weight put on her heart and lungs. But witnesses at Broomfield Hospital - where she had been a patient for two months - said relatives brought in fish and chips and family-sized buckets of fried chicken to the mother-of-four. Sharon Mevsimler Mrs Mevsimler, whose husband Bulent gave up his job as a chef to look after her, died at the weekend. An ...
Antibody Kills 91% of HIV Strains Post Date: 2010-07-08 15:47:22 by WhiteSands

In a significant step toward an AIDS vaccine, U.S. government scientists have discovered three powerful antibodies, the strongest of which neutralizes 91% of HIV strains, more than any AIDS antibody yet discovered. Looking closely at the strongest antibody, they have detailed exactly what part of the virus it targets and how it attacks that site. The antibodies were discovered in the cells of a 60-year-old African-American gay man, known in the scientific literature as Donor 45, whose body made the antibodies naturally. Researchers screened 25 million of his cells to find 12 that produced the antibodies. Now the trick will be for scientists to develop a vaccine or other methods to make ...
CDC: West Nile Virus Illness Continue To Decline Post Date: 2010-07-01 14:17:02 by Brian S

(07-01) 09:43 PDT ATLANTA (AP) -- Last year's West Nile virus season was the mildest in eight years, and just one case of serious illness has been reported so far this year. U.S. health officials on Thursday said there were 386 cases of severe West Nile illness and 33 deaths last year. That's a far cry from the peak years of 2002 and 2003, when illnesses numbered nearly 3,000 and deaths surpassed 260. West Nile was first reported in the United States in 1999. It's spread by mosquitoes that often pick up the virus from birds they bite. Most cases occur in July through September. Severe symptoms including neck stiffness, disorientation, coma and paralysis. One possible reason ...
Feds to Burn $260M Worth of Expired Swine Flu Vaccine Post Date: 2010-07-01 11:51:43 by Brian S

ATLANTA (AP) About a quarter of the swine flu vaccine produced for the U.S. public has expired meaning that a whopping 40 million doses worth about $260 million are being written off as trash. "It's a lot, by historical standards," said Jerry Weir, who oversees vaccine research and review for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The outdated vaccine, some of which expired Wednesday, will be incinerated. The amount, as much as four times the usual leftover seasonal flu vaccine, likely sets a record. And that's not even all of it. About 30 million more doses will expire later and may go unused, according to one government estimate. If all that vaccine ...

U.S. Spends The Most On Health Care, Yet Gets Least Post Date: 2010-06-25 12:43:30 by go65

Pretty much no matter how you measure it, our health care system stinks. Once again that's the sobering conclusion of the 2010 version of the annual Commonwealth Fund comparison of the U.S. health system with those in other industrialized nations. This year the competitors were Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The U.S. finished last. To come up with the rankings, researchers surveyed both doctors and patients. The criteria comprised quality, access, efficiency, equity, whether people in each country lived long and productive lives, and how much each country spent per person on care. The researchers produced a spiffy interactive graphic ...

(Reuters) - Americans spend twice as much as residents of other developed countries on healthcare, but get lower quality, less efficiency and have the least equitable system, according to a report released on Wednesday. The United States ranked last when compared to six other countries -- Britain, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand, the Commonwealth Fund report found. "As an American it just bothers me that with all of our know-how, all of our wealth, that we are not assuring that people who need healthcare can get it," Commonwealth Fund president Karen Davis told reporters in a telephone briefing. Previous reports by the nonprofit fund, which conducts ...
Costly US Health Care Falls Short: Report Post Date: 2010-06-23 12:14:42 by Brian S

The US health care system is the costliest in the world, but underperforms relative to many other industrialized nations, according to a study released Wednesday. The report by the Commonwealth Fund, a private foundation focused on health, updated its comparison of the US medical care system to those in Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Britain. The US system "ranks last or next-to-last on five dimensions of a high performance health system: quality, access, efficiency, equity, and healthy lives," the report said. But the study, an update to three prior reports, noted that newly enacted health reform legislation in the US "will start to address ...

Survey Finds Jump in Health Insurance Cost for Individuals By REED ABELSON Published: June 21, 2010 Even as the nation was debating whether to overhaul the health insurance market, people who were buying coverage on their own were experiencing sharp increases in the cost of their policies, according to a survey released Monday. Those surveyed said they were faced with premium increases averaging 20 percent when they last sought to renew their coverage, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonprofit health policy research group, which conducted the survey in March and early April. While some people switched to less expensive plans that offered less generous coverage, and others ...

But does taking Viagra increase the risk of hearing loss? A new study is raising concern about a troubling side effect from Viagra and similar drugs. Hearing expert Dr. Scott Messenger has learned to ask men of a certain age a certain question when they report sudden hearing loss. "We are now asking, are you taking any erectile dysfunction medication?" Messenger said. Soon after Viagra hit the market in 1998 a handful of reports began to surface of men suffering ...
ADHD In Kids Tied To Organophosphate Pesticides Post Date: 2010-05-17 18:08:16 by Brian S

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Children exposed to pesticides known as organophosphates could have a higher risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to a new study. Researchers tracked the pesticides' breakdown products in kids' urine and found those with high levels were almost twice as likely to develop ADHD as those with undetectable levels. The findings are based on data from the general U.S. population, meaning that exposure to the pesticides could be harmful even at levels commonly found in children's environment. "There is growing concern that these pesticides may be related to ADHD," said Marc Weisskopf of the Harvard School of Public ...

May 11 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obamas plan to fight drug abuse and trafficking proposes spending $15.5 billion next year and shifting the emphasis from fighting a war on drugs to treating the problem as a national health issue, the administrations top drug-policy adviser said in an interview. Its a disease, its diagnosable and its certainly something that can be treated -- but its not a war, said Gil Kerlikowske, director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. The presidents plan calls for increasing drug-control spending by 3.5 percent in the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. It aims to reduce drug use ...

Saturday, April 24, 2010 Federal health officials are investigating the first hints of any possible significant complications from the H1N1 vaccine, but stressed that the concerns will probably turn out to be a false alarm. The latest analysis of data has detected what could be a somewhat elevated rate of Guillain-Barré syndrome, which can cause paralysis and death; Bell's palsy, a temporary facial paralysis; and thrombocytopenia, which is a low level of blood platelets, officials reported Friday. The data is being collected through five of the networks the government is using to monitor people who were inoculated against the swine flu. Officials stressed that it is far too ...

'Cure' is found for skin cancer, claim scientists Scientists believe that they have found a cure for skin cancer. A vaccine being tested in the UK has helped been shown to help some patients fully recover from melanoma, even in its advanced stages. It attacks tumour cells, leaving healthy cells undamaged and carries agents that boost the body's response to skin cancer. Dr Howard Kaufman, of Chicago's Rush University Medical Centre, said: "Our study shows we may have a cure for some advanced melanoma patients and a drug which has real benefits for others. "This will save thousands of lives a year." Over the past 25 years, rates of melanoma in Britain ...

Ryan, a 40-year-old Wisconsin Republican, says Republicans have a fight on their hands, and he is ready for combat. As Democrats scrambled this past week for votes, he's been listening to Metallica on his iPod and strategizing about how best to counteract Obamacare. Sunday night's passage, he says, "was ...

Arizona on Thursday became the first state to eliminate its Childrens Health Insurance Program when Gov. Jan Brewer signed an austere budget that will leave nearly 47,000 low-income children without coverage. The Arizona budget is a vivid reflection of how the fiscal crisis afflicting state governments is cutting deeply into health care. The state also will roll back Medicaid coverage for childless adults in a move that is expected to eventually drop 310,000 people from the rolls. State leaders said they were left with few choices because of a $2.6 billion projected shortfall next year. But hospital officials and advocates for low-income people said they were worried that emergency ...
