Abortion Rates Are Higher In Countries Where Procedure Is Illegal, Study Finds Post Date: 2012-01-19 09:06:14 by lucysmom

LONDON -- Abortion rates are higher in countries where the procedure is illegal and nearly half of all abortions worldwide are unsafe, with the vast majority in developing countries, a new study concludes. Experts couldn't say whether more liberal laws led to fewer procedures, but said good access to birth control in those countries resulted in fewer unwanted pregnancies. The global abortion rate remained virtually unchanged from 2003 to 2008, at about 28 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44, a total of about 43.8 million abortions, according to the study. The rate had previously been dropping since 1995. About 47,000 women died from unsafe abortions in 2008, and another 8.5 ...

PAULA DEEN, the self-crowned Queen of Southern cuisine, said Tuesday morning on the Today show on NBC that she has Type 2 diabetes, a diagnosis she received three years ago. Ms. Deen also confirmed that she is being paid to promote Victoza, a noninsulin injectable medication made by Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company. Ms. Deen, 64, ran a restaurant in Savannah, Ga., for years before she became nationally known through her cooking shows on the Food Network, reveling in dishes like deep-fried macaroni and cheese and Krispy Kreme doughnut bread pudding. But she said in an interview with the Today co-host Al Roker, Ive always ...

Hormones arent just for sexthey help control everything from the times when we feel hungry to the timing of our heart beats. Dozens have been described, but there is now a new one on the scene. It might help explain some of the health benefits of exercise and point the way to preventing obesity and diabetes. The find was described online Wednesday in Nature (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group). Exercise has myriad benefits for the body and brain, but many of the triggers for these improvements have so far been somewhat of a mystery. There has been a feeling in the field that exercise talks to various tissues in the body, Bruce ...
States are pushing it on Medicaid cuts Post Date: 2012-01-12 11:37:46 by lucysmom

To get a sense for how desperate states are to cut Medicaid costs, think about this: Several of them are seeking federal permission to impose short, inflexible annual limits on hospital stays, no matter how sick or severely injured the patient is. While the states face severe budget squeezes, imposing unaffordable burdens on some of their sickest and most vulnerable residents is hardly a responsible answer, or one that will be felt by the poor alone. Hospitals will feel pressured to cut stays short, but they also say they'll continue to provide essential care, so the costs will be recovered by pushing up the price of care for bill-paying patients. snip Medicaid patients generally ...

Greek Crisis Has Pharmacists Pleading for Aspirin as Drug Supply Dries Up By Naomi Kresge - Jan 10, 2012 5:01 PM ET . The 12,000 pharmacies that dot almost every street corner in Greek cities are the damaged capillaries of a complex system for getting treatment to patients. Photographer: Louisa Gouliamaki/AFP/Getty Images . For patients and pharmacists in financially stricken Greece, even finding aspirin has turned into a headache. Mina Mavrou, who runs a pharmacy in a middle-class Athens suburb, spends hours each day pleading with drugmakers, wholesalers and colleagues to hunt down medicines for clients. Life-saving drugs such as Sanofi (SAN)s blood-thinner Clexane and ...

European Health Care: Economic Malpractice By Hugh de Payns Any reasonable person does not take satisfaction in the failure and destruction of another. This is especially true when the other is innocent of any wrongdoing or lack of judgment. Yet sometimes, epic failure can constructively serve as an example of what not to do. If the individual states of our nation are a laboratory of democracy, then the states of Europe are the laboratory of socialism. What we are witness to in Greece, and eventually in Spain, Italy, and possibly France, is the painful death of the welfare state. Credit markets are locking up all over the continent; meanwhile, trillions have been pumped into ...

ObamaCare Abominations By John Stossel President Obama says his health care "reform" will be good for business. Business has learned the truth. Three successful businessmen explained to me how Obamacare is a reason that unemployment stays high. Its length and complexity make businessmen wary of expanding. Mike Whalen, CEO of Heart of America Group, which runs hotels and restaurants, said that when he asked his company's health insurance experts to summarize the impact of Obamacare, "the three of them kind of looked at each other and said, 'We've gone to seminar after seminar, and, Mike, we can't tell you.' I think that just kind of sums up the ...

President Obama is setting a new goal of getting AIDS drugs to two million more people living with HIV around the world by the end of 2013. At a Washington event marking World AIDS Day, the president announced Thursday that he is directing a $50 million increase in spending on HIV and AIDS treatment in the U.S. The White House says there are 1.2 million ...

Women in the state are narrowly opposed to the amendment (46 to 42 percent in favor), while Mississippis men are more in favor (48 percent) than are against (42 percent). wo 9-month-old mice from the study. The one on the right received the drug to eliminate senescent cells. In a potentially fundamental advance, researchers have opened up a novel approach to combating the effects of aging with the discovery that a special category of cells, known as senescent cells, are bad actors that promote the aging of the tissues. Cleansing the body of the cells, they hope, could postpone many of the diseases of aging. The findings raise the prospect that any therapy that rids the body of senescent cells would protect it from the ravages of aging. But many more tests will be needed before scientists know if drugs can be developed to help people live longer. ...

Cancer Feeds on Fructose, America's Number One Source of Calories Anthony Gucciardi, Fri, 30 Sep 2011 15:51 CDT High-fructose corn syrup is the primary source of calories in the United States. In addition to containing mercury, a known carcinogen, cancer cells actually feed on high-fructose corn syrup after it is metabolized by the liver. A new study, published in the Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Targets, examined the link between refined sugar and cancer. The results add further evidence to the reports of many health experts and scientific studies that have drawn the connection between excess sugar consumption and the development of cancer. The researchers highlighted the numerous ...

(NaturalNews) The American Academy of Pediatrics is now encouraging the diagnosis of so-called Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in preschool age kids and calling for the drugging of those little ones with drugs like Ritalin if they don't respond to "behavior management techniques." Yes, if a four year old runs around too much and doesn't want to sit still and study his or her ABCs, it may well be time to drug the child into submission, according to the new guidelines. But that's not the only disturbing news about Big Pharma and mainstream medicine's push to put younger Americans on potentially dangerous drugs. Now comes a warning from Dr. Eric ...

Use of antidepressant drugs has soared nearly 400% since 1988, making the medication the most frequently used by people ages 18-44, a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows. Eleven percent of Americans ages 12 years and older took antidepressants during the 2005-08 study period, the authors write. They add that though the majority of antidepressants were taken to treat depression, the drugs also can be used for anxiety disorders and other conditions. The data are from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, which included information from 12,637 participants about prescription-drug use, antidepressant use, length of use, severity of depressive ...

Deval Patrick vowed to crack the code on costs and lower the states health care spending. After three years of study, the states legislative leaders appear close to producing bills that would make Massachusetts ...
Experts Issue New Warnings In Listeria Outbreak (dispose of any cantaloupe if you don't know where it's from) Post Date: 2011-09-29 11:47:58 by Brian S

As the death toll from the listeria outbreak climbed, federal health officials issued new warnings Wednesday to consumers to dispose of any cantaloupe they have if they don't know where it's from. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 72 illnesses, including 13 deaths, from listeriosis linked to whole melons grown by Jensen Farms in Holly, Colo. Three other deaths are currently under investigation. Cantaloupes usually don't last for more than two weeks in the refrigerator and the melons were recalled on Sept. 14, yet health officials still are urging consumers to check to see where any whole cantaloupes are from. "If it's not Jensen ...

EXTRACTS: A meta-analysis on 19 studies confirms kidney and liver toxicity in rats and mice fed on GM soybean and maize, representing more than 80 percent of all commercially available GM food; it also exposes gross inadequacies of current risk assessment. A team of independent scientists led by Gilles-Eric Séralini at Caen University in France carried out a meta-analysis combining the results of 19 previous studies [1], and their report concluded: From the regulatory tests performed today, it is unacceptable to submit 500 million Europeans and several billions of consumers worldwide to the new pesticide GM-derived foods or feed, this being done without more controls (if any) ...

Shortage of Vital Drugs Shows Another Free Market Failure in Health Care By: Patrick Malone & Associates P.C. | DC Injury Lawyers The U.S. faces a growing shortage of the low-profit but vital generic drugs that cancer patients and other desperate folks rely on. These drugs are made in places like India and China in plants that the Food and Drug Administration lacks power to inspect. Meantime, Big Pharma focuses on new high-profit but low-benefit drugs. The latest examples of new FDA approvals: Provenge, a drug for prostate cancer which on average extends life by four months at a cost of $93,000, and Yervoy, a melanoma drug with a price tag of $120,000 for a similar average benefit of ...

While President Obama rests up at Martha's Vineyard, people whose lives should be saved by new and existing cancer drugs are driving from hospital to hospital in search of medicines in short supply thanks in part to Obamacare's implementation. Over the past two years shortages have developed for over 180 drugs, including cancer treatments. The shortfall is the result of stricter FDA regulation, government price controls on already discounted but complex drugs, and policies that discourage the use of new medications. Companies, facing lower prices, tighter regulation and increasing government control over what drugs will be used and when, are exiting the U.S. market and investing in ...

(See Why Does Tampa Student Bomb Plot Surprise Anyone) I also stated if anyone didnt believe the argument I used, then they needed to do some research over the past 10 years and they would find a number of articles where professional psychiatrists have even defended pedophilia. As if it were meant to be or just perfect coincidental timing, I found a newly posted article claiming that some members of the American Psychiatric ...

After years of trying to conceive, Dr. Kelly Ross was stunned to discover that she was pregnant with not just one, but three babies. The long-awaited news "I'm pregnant" now came with a mixed bag of emotions and concerns. "I never thought I'd be in that position. All of a sudden I found myself with three babies," says Ross, who is the director of pediatric hospitalist medicine at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. Though she had knowingly transferred three embryos during her in vitro fertilization, the chances of all of the embryos taking was only about 3 percent, so Ross never even considered the possibility that she would have to deal with triplets. Illinois Shutting Down Artisan Ice Cream Makers for Crime of Using Fresh Fruit Post Date: 2011-08-11 17:41:11 by Hondo68

If You Love Food, This Should Make You Angry Photo from Busy Beaver Buttons. The State of Illinois is shutting down local, artisan ice cream makers for such terrible offenses as using fresh fruit instead of fruit syrup and fresh cream instead of pre-packaged soft serve mix. What, you say? How can this be? Health officials in this state are known for being overzealous when it comes to making sure that small, independent businesses follow obscure rules - and when I say small and independent, I'm talking about businesses that are often owned and run by 1-2 people renting space in a shared, licensed commercial kitchen. These are not corporations with large amounts of money who have the ...

HIV infections in U.S. stable but disparities exist (Reuters) - The number of Americans newly infected with HIV remained stable between 2006 and 2009, but infections rose nearly 50 percent among young black gay and bisexual men, U.S. experts said on Wednesday. New data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveal progress since the peak of the HIV epidemic in the 1980s. But the sharp increases in infection rates among young black men who have sex with men show there is much more work to do, they said. "We're very concerned about these increases among young gay men," Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of the CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, said in a ...

Based upon the IOM's report released last month HHS just yesterday approved the non-profit organization's recommended guidelines mandating insurance companies cover 100% of a wide range of contraception options ...
