Murkowski May Stay in Alaska Senate Race
Post Date: 2010-09-12 14:57:14 by Brian S

Lisa Murkowski, the Alaska senator defeated by upstart challenger Joe Miller in the state's GOP primary, is considering running in the November general election as a write-in or third-party candidate. Steve Wackowski, spokesman for the two-term senator, said Ms. Murkowski was weighing requests by supporters in Alaska that she stay in the race against Mr. Miller. One option for Ms. Murkowski would be to run on Alaska's Libertarian Party's ticket, Mr. Wackowski said, adding that her decision could come by next week, he said. Ms. Murkowski declined to comment. Joe Miller, a former magistrate who was backed by former Alaska Gov. the tea party, won the August primary by just 2,0 ...

DELAWARE: GOP Tries To Take Out Tea Party-Backed Candidate

By PHILIP ELLIOTT DOVER, Del. (AP) -- Arms linked, Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell and her conservative backers kick up their heels and clap to the strains of an original song with lyrics befitting a tea party. "Look out Washington, D.C., 'cause we are on a roll and we're rocking across this country with a message to be told." It's a tune that's unnerving the Republican establishment in Delaware, which fears being felled by swift kicks from O'Donnell - and tea partiers. Not long after tea party-backed Joe Miller stunned Alaska GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski, the Republican establishment is furiously trying to avoid a similar outcome in the Delaware primary ...

The search continued Wednesday for a man accused of murdering his two teenage daughters and leaving their bodies in his taxi cab. The Denton County Sheriff's SWAT team had surrounded a Lewisville home for hours Wednesday in search of Yaser Abdel Said, a 50-year-old cab driver, police said. Authorities entered the house about 4 p.m. to find it empty. The bodies of Sarah Yaser Said, 17, and her sister Amina Yaser Said, 18, were found Tuesday evening in Irving inside a Jet Taxi vehicle that Mr. Said drove, Irving police spokesman David Tull said. About 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Irving police received a 911 call from a woman whose only statement was that she "was dying," according to ...

'This Is The Final Struggle:' Newt Gingrich Sells A Movie About The Islamic Threat To America
Post Date: 2010-09-11 14:37:32 by Brian S

In a straight-to-DVD movie that will premiere tomorrow night in D.C., Newt Gingrich and Citizens United warn Americans of the impending threat of radical Islam. As one of their talking heads says in the trailer, "This is the end of times. This is the final struggle." The movie, called "America At Risk," paints the world as a dangerous place filled with radicalized Muslims who want to -- and, importantly, can -- destroy America. "The war on terror, and the ideology behind it, have only just begun," Gingrich's wife, Callista Gingrich, intones while she and Gingrich stand in front of a green-screened New York skyline. Here's the trailer: If it ...

GOP Leaders To Share Stage With Anti-Muslim Bigot

Leading Republicans like Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney have been showing off their anti-Islamophobic bona fides this week by publicly denouncing the Quran burning. Now, they're about to face a key test that will show whether or not they have a serious interest in tamping down anti-Muslim sentiment in their party and the country at large: One of the most virulent anti-Muslim and downright racist voices in the country, Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association, is scheduled to be a featured speaker at the Values Voter Summit in Washington next week. Other featured speakers include Romney, Gingrich, Rep. Michele Bachmann, Sen. Jim DeMint, Sean Hannity, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, ...

Fox Host Engages In ‘Politicized Journalism’ To Aid Scooter Libby (described as "an unmitigated blowjob.")

Former Bush White House official Scooter Libby has emerged from the self-imposed silence which followed his conviction in 2007 for lying about the outing of CIA officer Valerie Plame. On Tuesday, he faced a sympathetic Fox News interviewer in what the blog Firedoglake described as "an unmitigated blowjob." Fox's Monica Crowley began by suggesting to Libby, "I know that you had been working on the Iraq surge before this ridiculous politically motivated case against you derailed your effort, and actually set back the Iraq surge program for years, and probably cost us a lot of lives and time in Iraq." In 2007, Crowley objected to speculation on television news shows ...

Girl Scouts Breed "Pro-Abortion" Lesbians, Says Republican

Sometimes you can actually hear Republicans think to themselves, "Fuck it, I'm going to go for it." That's what Hans Zeiger, a Republican who hopes to join Washington State's House of Representatives, must have been thinking when he claimed that the Girl Scouts are godless, baby-murdering lesbians. You're right, it's not fair of me to twist his words. Here, watch him twist them himself: The Girl Scouts allow homosexuals and atheists to join their ranks, and they have become a pro-abortion, feminist training corps. If the Girl Scouts of America can't get back to teaching real character, perhaps it will be time to look for our cookies elsewhere. ...

Untangling the Bizarre CIA Links to the Ground Zero Mosque
Post Date: 2010-09-10 20:31:32 by Brian S

So far, the debate over the proposed Islamic center near Ground Zero has unfolded along predictable lines, with the man at the center of the project, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, drawing attacks from the right painting him as a terrorist sympathizer with ties to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.  But meanwhile, links between the group behind the controversial mosque, the CIA and U.S. military establishment have gone unacknowledged. For instance, one of the earliest backers of the nonprofit group, the Cordoba Initiative, that is spearheading the Ground Zero mosque, is a 52-year-old Scarsdale, New York, native named R. Leslie Deak. In addition to serving on the group's ...

“Peace” is a word so over-used and abused that by now it’s wise to brace yourself every time some self-declared “peace-maker” pipes up. But even by those standards, the perversion of “peace-making” hit fresh heights Wednesday evening, when CNN’s Larry King Live, guest-hosted by Soledad O’Brien, devoted a full hour to an interview with the imam behind the Ground Zero mosque project, Feisal Abdul Rauf. Asked if it’s really a good idea to go ahead with his plans to build a mosque and Islamic center at an address so close to Ground Zero that it has become a flash point, Rauf gave a reply that boils down to a threat. Rauf said that if his ...

Some of the most damning evidence of systematic child abuse by the Roman Catholic clergy to come to light was unveiled today by Belgium's leading authority on paedophilia, who published hundreds of pages of harrowing victim testimony detailing their traumas and suffering. The explosive report by Peter Adriaenssens in the town of Louvain, east of Brussels, lists evidence of 476 instances of child abuse by priests and bishops going back 50 years. Adriaenssens was appointed by the church last year to head an independent inquiry into the scandal. Since April, when Roger Vangheluwe, the bishop of Bruges, resigned after admitting persistently molesting a nephew, the Adriaenssens commission ...

So what exactly did “draining the swamp” mean, anyway?  Apparently, it meant taking power and promoting such examples of ethics as Timothy Geithner to high office.  The Washington Post notes that the IRS has a locus of tax evaders to pursue, and not coincidentally that locus happens to be in their neighborhood: Capitol Hill employees owed $9.3 million in overdue taxes at the end of last year, a sliver of the $1 billion owed by federal workers nationwide but one with potential political ramifications for members of Congress. The debt among Hill employees has risen at a faster rate than the overall tax debt on the government’s books, according to Internal Revenue ...

In the aftermath of the catastrophic BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Fox News commentator and 2012 GOP presidential wannabe Sarah Palin talked tough from the sanctity of her Facebook and Twitter accounts about playing "hardball" with BP executives. "[V]erify what BP reports," she proffered in a Facebook posting riddled with distortions of her own record with Big Oil in Alaska. "Demand answers." Palin rattles off a good game about Big Oil and lobbyists. Yet government documents provided by both the Senate Office of Public Records and the Federal Elections Commission reveal that Randy Scheunemann -- Palin's most ardent supporter in the McCain camp during ...

With the nation scheduled to mark the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks this weekend, former staffers tell The Daily Beast it is clear that the 9/11 Commission, which went out of business in 2004, failed to conduct a thorough inspection of the government's most important library of raw intelligence on al Qaeda and the 9/11 plot. The Republican Party of Delaware has filed a formal complaint with the Federal Election Commission, accusing one of its own Senate candidates of illegally collaborating with the Tea Party Express. Attorneys for the state party asked the FEC to launch an immediate and thorough investigation into conservative GOP candidate Christine O’Donnell “to remedy the alleged violations and to ensure that these violations immediately cease and do not reoccur,” according to the complaint filed Thursday. O’Donnell, who faces Rep. Mike Castle in Tuesday’s primary, came under fire from the state party shortly after tea party-backed candidate Joe Miller upset Sen. Lisa Murkowski in ...

By Jeanne Sahadi, senior writerSeptember 8, 2010: 3:21 PM ETNEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Those who oppose higher taxes and are fed up with record levels of U.S. debt may pine for Ronald Reagan, the patron saint of lower taxes and smaller government. But it's worth considering just what Reagan did -- and didn't do -- as lawmakers grapple with many of the same issues that their 1980s counterparts faced: a deep recession, high deficits and a rip-roaring political divide over taxes. Soon after taking office in 1981, Reagan signed into law one of the largest tax cuts in the postwar period. That legislation -- phased in over three years -- pushed through a 23% across-the-board cut of ...

(CNN) - A new poll indicates that the battle for Kentucky's open Senate seat is dead even. According to a new CNN/Time/Opinion Research Corporation survey of registered voters in Kentucky, 46 percent support Republican nominee Rand Paul, with an equal amount saying they back Democratic nominee Jack Conway. Five percent of those questioned say they'd vote for neither candidate if the general election were held today, and four percent have no opinion. Full results (pdf) "Not surprisingly, Paul is winning among conservatives by more than 40 points," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "But Conway has a 22-point advantage among moderates." "Patriots" hoping to shake Glenn Beck's hand on the nine-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks will be out of luck if they waited too long. Tea Party's Negative Rating Continues To Climb

Carrie Dann writes: For the second time this month, the NBC/WSJ poll results show that the Tea Party has a net negative rating. In the latest poll released today, 36 percent of respondents said they have a somewhat or very negative opinion of the movement, compared with 28 percent who said they view it positively. That’s the highest negative rating for the nebulous political movement since pollsters began asking respondents’ opinion of it in January 2010. (Although it’s worth noting that the negative ratings for the Democratic and Republican parties – at 43 percent apiece – are still worse.) The NBC/WSJ poll surveyed respondents in the field from August 26-30 – ...

LAKE JACKSON, Texas - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Congressman Ron Paul today issued the following statement about a Florida pastor's plan to ban copies of the Quran on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. "A professed Christian pastor in Gainesville, Florida, Terry Jones, plans to burn copies of the Quran on 9/11. He indicts all Islam for 9/11 and argues that it is a hate-driven religion. He's convinced he's on God's side even though he is getting little support from other Christians, who believe that Jesus is the Prince of Peace. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) on Wednesday said he’d decide whether to run for president after the November election. Barbour, a GOP insider often mentioned as a candidate to challenge President Obama in 2012, didn't rule out the possibility, but said he hasn’t seriously contemplated a presidential run. “I'm not giving serious thought to running for president until after the November election,” Barbour said at a breakfast sponsored by The Christian Science Monitor. Barbour did offer his take on the Republican primary in 2012. “I expect this to be a very wide open nomination contest," he said. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and ...

A top US veterans group on Tuesday blasted a planned Koran burning to mark nine years since the September 11th strikes as the work of "religious extremists" whose gesture would endanger US forces. "There is nothing to be gained and everything to lose from this selfish act," said Richard Eubank, leader of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the largest US combat veterans organization with 1.5 million members. "Our war is against a small number of religious extremists who kill indiscriminately and without remorse. Let's not allow an equally small number of religious extremists in America to widen the war," said Eubank. Eubank deplored that the action, ...

I hope he chokes on the money he was paid to write it. Delaware GOP Suggests Tea Party Senate Challenger Is a 'Liar'

The internal squabble among Delaware Republicans heated up Friday in the run-up to a contentious Senate primary, as the state Republican Party dropped the L-word -- liar -- in calling out Tea Party candidate Christine O'Donnell over her alleged financial problems. O'Donnell is trying to replicate the kind of Tea Party upset that rocked the Alaska GOP Senate primary last week by casting her more established Republican opponent, longtime Delaware Rep. Mike Castle, as a moderate disloyal to conservative principles. But some Republicans fear she has too few credentials and too much baggage to beat Democrat Chris Coons, a local county executive, in the race for the Senate seat ...
