Former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly hinted at starting a competing network to his old home, saying Saturday that "I am starting my own operation." On his "The Spin Stops Here" tour in New York on Saturday, O'Reilly was asked if he would start a new network to counter his powerful former home. He said a "bunch of people are looking to compete with Fox because there's a perception of decline," Newsday reports: "But I am starting my own operation. We are going to do that," adding that his website, billoreilly.com, will beta test a half-hour newscast "where we will go into a studio and here it will look like ‘The Factor.' ...

Almost half of voters think journalists 'make up' anonymous sources

Almost half of U.S. voters believe journalists fabricate their anonymous sources, according to a new poll. A Morning Consult/Politico survey conducted Mar. 2-6 and published Wednesday asked registered voters if they think it's "likely" that journalists "make up" anonymous sources for their stories. Most, 56 percent, either said it wasn't likely, or that they didn't know or had no opinion. But nearly half, 44 percent, said they believed it to be "likely." Republicans, who tend to harbor more distrust of the news media, were more likely to say they believed journalists made up their anonymous sources. Sixty-five percent of GOP voters said they ...

FR crashes right on schedule (60 mins before inauguration)

As expected, Jim Robinson's site has crashed this morning an hour before the swearing-in ceremony. I don't know what people expect for a measly $352,000 per year, but apparently not enough bandwidth to host a much larger than expected number of logins. A decade of this same schtick has either taught them nothing, or taught them that there's fundraising grift money in it ("Oh, woe is us - we can't afford the necessary upgrades to our Windows XP Server! And breadsticks."). Millions of dollars over the years and users still can't even go back in to correct/edit/update postings, either. What a racket, huh? Hello? Anybody out there? Happy Inauguration Day, folks.

Government Reverses Its Course on Highway Fonts

Highway signs will soon get a new look—or an old one, depending on your perspective. According to CityLab, the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently announced they will change fonts from Clearview—a typeface designed to improve legibility for drivers—to Highway Gothic, a font that was developed in the 1940s and used on road signs until 2004. Font nerds and transit geeks might be the only ones who notice the switch right away. However, traffic sign design reportedly makes a big difference when it comes to safety. WNYC writes that Highway Gothic was problematic for aging drivers with poor eyes, since its letters turned into a bright blur from the reflection of ...

Seattle police are seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspected serial masturbator who publicly pleasures himself while disguising his identity with a makeshift ninja outfit. Cops first learned of the masked pervert in January, after a woman called 911 to report that a man was “masturbating outside the front door of her home.” Cops responding to the scene were unable to locate the suspect. Last month, a night vision camera outside the woman’s residence recorded the suspect again pleasuring himself next to the front door. As seen above and below, the surveillance images--which captured the masked masturbator in the act--show him dressed head-to-toe in dark ...

The man who as a child voiced the sweetly crestfallen Charlie Brown on animated television specials was sentenced in San Diego on Monday to more than four years in prison for making threats, including one against the local sheriff, authorities said. The sentencing marks the culmination of about two years of mounting legal problems for Peter Robbins, 59. He pleaded guilty last month to one count of threatening the manager of the mobile home park where he lived and one count of attempted threat for saying, while he was in jail, that he wanted to solicit the murder of San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore. A judge on Monday sentenced Robbins to four years and eight months in prison for his ...

Eugene Bostick may have officially retired about 15 years ago, but in some ways that was when his most impactful work began. Not long after, he embarked on a new career path of sorts — as a train conductor for rescued stray dogs. The lively 80-year-old Fort Worth, Texas, native says he never planned on dedicating his golden years to helping needy pets. Instead, it was a duty thrust upon him by the heartlessness of others. "We live down on a dead-end street, where me and my brother have a horse barn," Bostick told The Dodo. "People sometimes come by and dump dogs out here, leaving them to starve. So, we started feeding them, letting them in, taking them to the vet ...

A New Jersey student waiting tables over the summer to put herself through college got an unwelcome surprise while serving a large group last week. On Aug. 17, Jess Jones waited on a table eight diners at D’Jais Bar & Grill, a restaurant and dance venue in Belmar. Though Jones says she told the large party the kitchen was running slower than usual, at the end of the meal she received a surprising note on the receipt, reports USA Today. Instead of leaving any tip on the $112.03 bill, the party left the commonly used acronym “LOL”—short for “laughing out loud”—and added “1 hour for food.” Jones took to Facebook the next day, posting a picture ...

Authorities say a man was accidentally crushed to death by a World War II-era tank driven by the husband of Jelly Belly's chief executive over the weekend. The California Highway Patrol told the Los Angeles Times that 54-year-old Kevin Wright, of Suisun City, Calif., was run over Saturday by a 1944 M5 tank that was being driven by 62-year-old Dwayne Brasher. Authorities said Brasher was driving the tank through an open field on property belonging to Jelly Belly chairman Herman Rowland Sr., while Wright was sitting on the front edge of the tank, facing inward. As the tank rolled down a dirt hill, police said Wright lost his balance and fell backward, landing directly in the path of the ...

Shari, then married with two kids, says she got hooked on Facebook five or six years ago. She was trying to build up an event planning business. “I was spending sometimes 4 or 5 hours a day…when I should have been cooking dinner or reading to my kids or watching a movie with my husband or just talking to my husband.” She began to post picture after picture of herself, acquired 5,000 Facebook friends and a thousand followers. "Tina S." has been winning raves for the video she uploaded to her YouTube channel Thursday, featuring her shredding to DragonForce’s “Through the Fire and Flames”.The song is known as one of the toughest songs to play on the video game Guitar Hero 3, but seeing it done in real life (on her Vigier Excalibur Custom)  is way more impressive. Mark Phillips' dream of hikers and kayakers carrying pouches of powdered alcohol for a stiff end-of-adventure drink may never get off the ground. More than a dozen states, including Pennsylvania, are making moves to ban Palcohol, single-serving pouches of powdered alcoholic drinks, before they hit the market. If the product receives federal approval, Palcohol (a combination of the words “powdered” and “alcohol”) could come in a variety of flavors, from one-shot servings of rum or vodka to cocktails such as cosmopolitans, lemon drop martinis and margaritas. Drinkers add 5 ounces of water to the pouch, seal it and shake it for about 30 seconds to create the drink. ...
