Rep. Ron Paul Calls Egypt A "Mess" Made By U.S. Intervention
Post Date: 2011-02-01 15:15:08 by Brian S
4 Comments
Rep. Ron Paul, R-Lake Jackson, is blaming U.S. policy for the upheaval in Egypt. "This is a typical example of what happens when we run on intervention-type foreign policies. We get in the middle of these fights. We've been in the middle of this for 30 years now. We've given Mubarak $60 billion. We're responsible for a lot of the mess that is over there," Paul said this afternoon on FOX News Channel's Your World with Neil Cavuto. Paul, a potential Senate candidate in Texas next year, is a longstanding critic of foreign entanglements, and probably Congress' leading isolationist. His son, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., caused a stir in recent days by advocating for ...

Press TV(Iran): Mubarak Will Step Down: Muslim Brotherhood

The Muslim Brotherhood has said that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will be stepping down. At 11:51 p.m. Cairo time on Friday night, the Muslim Brotherhood's website Ikhwanweb.com posted the sentence: “Semi-confirmed: The dictator will step down, his family fled the country secretly.” Tens of thousands of protesters across the country turned out after Friday prayers and clashed with police. Egyptian authorities shut down internet and cell phone service in the country on Thursday and imposed a curfew in major cities. At least 21 people have been killed and dozens of others have been injured since the demonstrations against unemployment, corruption, and rising prices ...

Republicans Move Quickly On Effort To Privatize Medicare
Post Date: 2011-01-28 14:20:03 by Brian S

WASHINGTON – House Republicans would support a plan to privatize Medicare in their annual budget, a member of the GOP leadership said. Texas Rep. Jeb Hensarling, the House Republican Conference Chairman and second-ranked GOP member of the budget committee, made the revelation during a panel discussion, according to the National Journal. "Unless you deal with Medicare, unless you go into Medicaid, unless you deal with Social Security for future generations—programs that were a great comfort to my grandparents and parents are morphing into a cruel Ponzi scheme for my 8-year-old daughter and my 7-year-old son," Hensarling said. Social Security and Medicare are ...

Bachmann Eyes Cuts To Veterans Health Benefits
Post Date: 2011-01-28 14:14:03 by Brian S

WASHINGTON – Tea party hero Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) this week proposed a blueprint to eliminate $400 billion from the federal budget, which included billions in cuts to veterans' health care and disability benefits. Her plan would freeze health care funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and slash $4.5 billion in disability benefits to military veterans. Bachmann posted the document on her official Web site, calling the spending cuts "real and necessary" to avoid increasing the debt ceiling above $14.3 trillion. She supports the United States wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. "Oh hell no! In the middle of 2 wars?" remarked Paul Rieckhoff, a ...

CPAC's Anti-Muslim Film Festival

Conservative conference will feature screenings of "The Ground Zero Mosque: The Second Wave of the 9/11 Attacks" The Conservative Political Action Conference, a high-profile annual gathering that will be held in Washington next month, recently came in for some criticism from the anti-Muslim right for allegedly being "penetrated" by radical, sharia-pushing Islamists. But the newly released CPAC theater schedule, posted online by the group Citizens United and noted by LobeLog's Eli Clifton, suggests that CPAC will still be safe for all stripes of Islamophobia. According to the list of scheduled film screenings, at least two movies focusing on the threat of ...

Michele Bachmann Emerges As Face Of Tea Party As Sarah Palin's Star Wanes
Post Date: 2011-01-27 12:22:45 by Brian S

With Mrs Palin's political star apparently on the wane after a much-criticised response to the Arizona shootings, Mrs Bachmann appears ready and willing to step into the breach. Although the official Republican response to Mr Obama's address to Congress was made by Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the Tea Party response by Mrs Bachmann was carried live on CNN. Mr Ryan, 40, a mild-mannered fiscal policy specialist, was scathing about Mr Obama's policies but maintained a measured tone, speaking with unadorned, straightforward language. At points, he even praised Mr Obama, stating that "some of his words were reassuring". In contrast, Mrs Bachmann, who worked as ...

Michele Bachmann Stirs Talk Of A GOP Divided

If Michele Bachmann had hoped to introduce herself to America as a potential candidate for the White House -- well, it could have gone better. First was the small controversy the Minnesota congresswoman sparked by accepting an invitation from a "tea party" group to provide a second response to President Obama's State of the Union address, which made it appear she was delivering an alternative Republican viewpoint. The official GOP response was given by U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.). Bachmann's remarks came afterward, about an hour after the president finished speaking. The conservative, known for her unapologetically inflammatory rhetoric and her strong ties to the ...

House GOP's Next 'Symbolic' Attack: Abortion Access
Post Date: 2011-01-26 12:38:48 by Brian S

Republicans have recently introduced bills in the House of Representatives and Senate aimed at reducing women's right to reproductive health services, or eliminating access to abortions altogether. Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MI) proposed legislation Tuesday to recognize that life begins at the moment of conception and is entitled to legal protection from that point forward. The bill, known as "The Life at Conception Act," seeks to terminate the protections for abortion created by the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade. "This is the latest example of hypocrisy from politicians who said they want less government in our lives yet propose bills like this one that would open the ...

Texas Governor Railed Against ‘Bailouts’ On Same Day He Requested One

Texas Governor Rick Perry, the Democrat-turned-Republican who served as George W. Bush's lieutenant and won his third term last year, wants you to think he's not a fan of federal bailouts. Yet, on the same day "Texans for Rick Perry" launched their "No Government Bailouts" campaign, Perry himself was lining up with the rest of the states asking for billions in federal funding from President Barack Obama's Recovery Act. Despite having $9.1 billion in surplus in a so-called "rainy day fund," Texas faced a $6.6 billion budget deficit in the 2010-11 fiscal years. To fill that gap, the state took $6.4 billion from the Obama administration and declared ...

Huh? Bachmann Credits Founders With Abolishing Slavery
Post Date: 2011-01-25 15:42:34 by Brian S

WASHINGTON – Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) said the United States was founded on racial and ethnic diversity and that the founding fathers were responsible for abolishing slavery. Speaking at an event sponsored by Iowans For Tax Relief, Bachmann hailed the "different cultures, different backgrounds, different traditions" of the early European settlers in America, adding that the "color of their skin" or "language" or "economic status" didn't preclude them from seeking happiness. "Once you got here, we were all the same," she said. "Isn't that remarkable? It is absolutely remarkable." The Minnesota Republican called ...

GOP Aides Irked With CNN For Airing Bachmann Speech

Here's an interesting twist on Michele Bachmann's plan to offer her own Tea Party-flavored response to Obama's State of the Union speech: It turns out GOP aides are annoyed with CNN for agreeing to air her speech in its entirety. Originally, Bachmann's response was going to be available for viewing only on the Internet. But CNN has announced that her speech will be shown in full in addition to broadcasting the speech from GOP Rep. Paul Ryan, who was picked for the official response by the Republican leadership. GOP aides are unhappy with the decision, because it risks making the opposition look conflicted -- as if the two are trying to upstage one another -- muddling GOP ...

Stewart Busts Fox News Claim That They Don't Use Nazi Analogies

Fox News' Megyn Kelly claimed last week that her network doesn't use Nazi references. Since that's just flat out wrong, the ball was in Jon Stewart's court to call her out. Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) had made a speech on the House floor last week comparing a Republican plan to repeal health care reform to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels. In an interview with Kelly, Democratic strategist Richard Socarides pointed out that Cohen wasn't the only one to invoke Nazis. "If we want to get into who is heating this and overheating this, I mean every night on the very network we're on right now, the leading commentators on this network use this kind of language," he ...

This shouldn’t be held against him, but it probably will be. The caucus members are Rand, Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah and South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint, who backed Rubio’s fledgling Senate campaign even as the Republican party backed former Gov. Charlie Crist. They will meet in a Senate office building with leading tea party activists including Campaign for Liberty president John Tate, Americans for Tax Reform president Grover Norquist and Tea Party Express chairman Amy Kremer… Kremer, who said the tea party movement is aimed at “sending conservatives to Washington, not Republicans,” acknowledged a “little bit of disappointment” that it appears Rubio ...

Giuliani To Piers Morgan: Tea Party’s Good, But A Couple People In It Are 'A Little Crazy'

Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor and 2008 Republican presidential candidate, talked Tea Party, taxes and the best (and worst) day of his life in a lively interview with CNN's Piers Morgan that airs at 9 ET Monday night. Overall, the Tea Party is a "good" movement, Giuliani said, but it has also attracted "a couple of people that are a little crazy ... " When he first launched his bid for the White House several years ago, he recalled that "there was a big anti-war movement in this country against the Iraq War, people hanging President Bush in effigy, people saying President Bush should be killed. Key Republican Hails ‘Fabulous’ Plan To Slash Social Security, Medicare

WASHINGTON – The top Republican on the Senate budget committee championed a plan to drastically cut Social Security and Medicare, another in a series of signs that the GOP is gearing up to try and slash the cherished programs. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) on Monday praised the "roadmap" put forth by his Republican House counterpart, budget committee chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), which would largely privatize Social Security and voucherize Medicare. "Ryan has done a fabulous thing," Sessions said on ABC's Top Line. "He's developed a plan that goes 60 years, and he deals with Social Security and Medicare. A lot of those changes don't take place until ...

Intern Daniel Hernandez, Family Of Girl Killed To Be Among Obama's Guests At State Of The Union Address

"An intern to Rep. Gabrielle Giffords who aided the congresswoman after she was shot in the head and the family of a 9-year-old girl who was killed will sit with first lady Michelle Obama for President Barack Obama's State of the Union address Tuesday night," the Associated Press writes. Hernandez is the young man who performed some basic first aid on Giffords immediately after the 40-year-old congresswoman was shot on Jan. 8, at the start of a rampage that left six people dead and another 13 — including Giffords — wounded by gunfire. As we wrote last week, Hernandez doesn't think he's a hero. But many others do. The little girl, Christina Taylor Green, had ...

Sen. DeMint Joins Boycott Of CPAC Over Inclusion Of Gays

Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) is the latest Republican who has chosen to skip this year's Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) over its inclusion of a pro-gay group. "With leading conservatives organizations not participating this year, Senator DeMint will not be attending," Wesley Denton, a spokesman for the senator, told CNN. "He hopes to attend a unified CPAC next year." Two other prominent Republicans, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, who is the chairman of the Republican Study Committee, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie have also announced they will not be attending CPAC. "Congressman Jordan believes that, in addition to low taxes and less spending, ...

Glenn Beck Rants Trigger Death Threats Against NY Professor

The life of a 78-year-old New York professor may be in danger after she was made a target by Fox News' Glenn Beck. Frances Fox Piven, a City University of New York sociologist, has been receiving death threats, and at least one group is blaming Beck, according to The New York Times. In a letter to Fox News, the Center for Constitutional Rights asked Chairman Roger Ailes to stop Beck's "false accusations" against Pivens. "Mr. Beck is putting Professor Piven in actual physical danger of a violent response," the group wrote. The Fox News host has been focusing on Piven since December 2009, and just last week he called her an enemy of the Constitution. He has also ...

‘You’re Going To Have To Shoot Them In The Head,’ Beck Said Of Democratic Leaders

Discussing Democratic leaders during a June broadcast for the Republican Fox News Channel, conspiracy host Glenn Beck told his followers they would have to "shoot them in the head" in order to bring an end to an alleged "communist" agenda. "They believe in communism," he said. "They believe and have called for a revolution. You're going to have to shoot them in the head. But warning, they may shoot you." A transcript of Beck's show was still available on the Fox News website. (Screenshot.) In the very next breath, he mentioned then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), claiming her "George Washington" was "Karl Marx." For ...

Olbermann On Lieberman: 'Good Riddance' To A 'Delusional Liar'

MSNBC's Keith Olbermann didn't hold anything back Wednesday when he announced the news that the "delusional liar" Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) was planning on retiring. Lieberman, Connecticut's state's former Attorney General who rose to become the Democratic Party's vice presidential nominee in 2000, spoke to reporters during a press conference and depicted himself as a victim of Washington's modern brand of partisan politics. "Along the way, I have not always fit comfortably into conventional political boxes -- maybe you've noticed that -- Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative," Lieberman said. "I have always thought that my ...

Sarah Palin's New Woe; Sex Scandal Rumors Resurface

Sarah Palin, whose credibility and popularity were battered following the Arizona shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, is now facing another crisis. New rumors have surfaced that her husband Todd Palin cheated with a female massage therapist who has been arrested for prostitution. Rumors of infidelity have dogged the Palins, since Sarah’s unsuccessful run as Republican John McCain’s vice presidential candidate in 2008. The rumors subsided, amid heated denials, but they have gained new traction recently. Political bloggers, largely in Alaska, have been digging into the allegations, but now The National Enquirer claims it has “official documents” confirming the ...

Steve Cohen: 'I Meant What I Said' About GOPers And Nazis Lying

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) isn't backing down from comments he made on the floor of the House last night comparing Republican's lies about health care to the lies of Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels. "I meant what I said, that lies are wrong," Cohen told TPM in a phone interview Wednesday. Cohen said he wasn't comparing Republicans to members of the Third Reich. He did, however, see a parallel between the rhetorical strategies of GOPers in their march to repeal health care reform and those used on the people of Germany under the leadership of Adolf Hitler. "It was a lie, and that if you repeat a lie over and over again it doesn't make it the truth and ...

President Barack Obama’s approval rate has risen by eight points since last month, according to a poll conducted by the Wall Street Journal and NBC News. 53 percent of those who responded said that they approve of the job that President is doing, whereas 41 percent say that they disapprove, a seven point drop since the previous month. The poll also found that 55 percent of respondents believe the President will take an even-handed approach when dealing with Congress. The Wall Street Journal and NBC News conducted the poll between January 13 and 17th. 1,000 adults participated. The apparent uptick in popularity follows President Obama’s highly praised remarks in Arizona ...
