Pope rejects resignations of Irish bishops after child abuse report Post Date: 2010-08-11 18:43:07 by WhiteSands

The pope has rejected the resignations of two Irish bishops after their diocese was severely criticised in a report into child abuse in Dublin. The Vatican said Pope Benedict XVI had not accepted the resignations of Bishops Raymond Field and Eamonn Walsh, who served as bishops in the Dublin diocese during the period investigated by the Murphy commission. The two auxiliary bishops had offered their resignations on Christmas Eve 2009, in the wake of the Murphy report. The pair, who are to be given revised responsibilities within the diocese, had initially resisted calls to quit.

White House Attacks 'Job Killer' Boehner Post Date: 2010-08-11 13:39:11 by Brian S

The White House aggressively went after House GOP leader John Boehner on Wednesday over his opposition to the stimulus bill. Jared Bernstein, the top economic adviser to Vice President Biden, singled out Boehner in an official White House blog posting, accusing the Ohio Republican of wanting his constituents out of work. "John Boehner wants a lot of people to lose their jobs," Bernstein wrote. "We were awfully surprised to hear Rep. Boehner come out for killing jobs en masse in his own state and district by stopping the Recovery Act on last Sundays news shows." Bernstein cited projects in Boehner's district that would be threatened if the ...
HUD Just Announced A Homeowner Bailout Post Date: 2010-08-11 13:07:54 by Brian S

Well, it's not exactly of the magnitude to be an August surprise but it is August, and it is a new homeowner bailout... HUD has just announced the following: ----------- WASHINGTON The Obama Administration today announced additional support to help homeowners struggling with unemployment through two targeted foreclosure-prevention programs. Through the existing Housing Finance Agency (HFA) Innovation Fund for the Hardest Hit Housing Markets (the Hardest Hit Fund), the U.S. Department of the Treasury will make $2 billion of additional assistance available for HFA programs for homeowners struggling to make their mortgage payments due to unemployment. Additionally, the U.S. ...
Reagan Insider: 'GOP Destroyed U.S. Economy' Post Date: 2010-08-11 11:35:12 by Brian S

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. (MarketWatch) -- "How my G.O.P. destroyed the U.S. economy." Yes, that is exactly what David Stockman, President Ronald Reagan's director of the Office of Management and Budget, wrote in a recent New York Times op-ed piece, "Four Deformations of the Apocalypse." Get it? Not "destroying." The GOP has already "destroyed" the U.S. economy, setting up an "American Apocalypse." Yes, Stockman is equally damning of the Democrats' Keynesian policies. But what this indictment by a party insider -- someone so close to the development of the Reaganomics ideology -- says about America, helps all of us better understand ...
Stewart: Gingrich Wants US To Descend To Saudi Arabia’s Standards of tolerance Post Date: 2010-08-11 11:29:39 by Brian S

Comedy Central's Jon Stewart on Tuesday took on Newt Gingrich for the tenor of his opposition to the Mosque slated to be build near Ground Zero in New York City. Gingrich weeks ago argued that the Mosque shouldn't be considered until Saudi Arabia warms up to Christianity. "I don't want to be lectured by them about religious liberty at a time where there is not a single church or a single synagogue in Saudi Arabia," Gingrich said. "Exactly!" jested Stewart. "Why should we as Americans have higher standards of religious liberty than Saudi Arabia?" Stewart went on to mock opponents of the Mosque for complaining about its proximity to Ground Zero. ...

Child sex abuse claim against priest called 'credible' by [ Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh ] Post Date: 2010-08-10 21:32:47 by WhiteSands

A review board for the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh has found allegations of child sexual abuse against the Rev. David Dzermejko "credible," and Bishop David Zubik has sent the case to Rome. Vatican officials will decide if he should have a church trial or if the evidence is strong enough to permanently remove him from ministry without further hearings. For the time being "it doesn't change his status from what it is now. He is on administrative leave and not involved in any ministry whatsoever," said Robert Lockwood, director of communications for the diocese. Father Dzermejko, 61, was removed as pastor of Mary, Mother of the Church in Charleroi in June 2009 ...

DiggGate is a large scale operation of censorship was just exposed on Digg.com following an undercover investigation. This is far from the first, and certainly will not be the last time a conservative group is caught red handed attempting to decide for everyone what to read and think, in fact, it has a very long history. DiggGate exposed the actions of a group called the Digg Patriots, who were actively conspiring to censor content, bait opponents into bans, use IP tricks to return from their own lifetime bans, and have numerous duplicate sleeper accounts. Their systematic manipulation of the largest social media site in the world was widespread and been going on for over a ...

Father Philip Jacobs, 60, was arrested by Canada Border Services Agency personnel on Wednesday as he arrived at the Victoria airport from San Francisco. He appeared in court Friday, and was released on a $25,000 surety. Jacobs is charged with one count of sexual assault, two counts of sexual interference and one count of sexual exploitation. When the Lexington Herald-Leader reported last week that Rand Paul was, in effect, a college dropout, it looked like the 2010 midterms might feature yet another fabulist. So far this year we've seen Connecticut Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal get busted for telling tall tales about having served in Vietnam; and in the Illinois Senate race, Mark Kirk was caught lying about everything from winning the Navy's "Intelligence Officer of the Year Award" to teaching nursery school. 86 Days to Decide: Activists Say Tea Party Imposters Infiltrating Elections Post Date: 2010-08-08 19:00:32 by Brian S

In New Jersey, a "Tea Party" candidate surfaces but local activists haven't heard of him. In Michigan, a Democratic operative appears closely tied to a slate of candidates running under the Tea Party banner. In Florida, conservative activists are locked in court over the right to use the Tea Party name. The list of peculiar Tea Party happenings goes on and on. As the midterm election nears, allegations are surfacing across the country that Democrats are exploiting conservatives' faith in the Tea Party name by putting up bogus candidates in November -- the claim is that those "Tea Party" candidates will split the GOP vote and clear the way for Democratic ...

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow has been researching the positions on abortion held by current Republican candidates and believes that, overall, they are far more extreme than in any previous election year. She also wonders why the Democratic Party hasn't made an issue of this extremism."The Republican Party is, without actually talking about it, this year nominating a group of candidates for top-of-the-ticket races that are more extreme on the issue of abortion than any other slate of top-of-the-ticket candidates in any other year," Maddow stated on Thursday. She pointed to several GOP Senatorial candidates or front-runners who have declared that they oppose a right to abortion even ...
Dems Accused Of Tea Party Tampering Post Date: 2010-08-05 18:21:35 by Brian S

Nationally, Democrats say they intend to campaign against the tea party movement. But locally, Democratic officials and activists in at least four states now stand accused of collaborating with tea party candidates in an attempt to sabotage Republican challengers in some of the closest House races in the nation. The charges of dirty tricks are being leveled in Pennsylvania, Michigan, New Jersey and Florida and they involve more than a half-dozen contests that could tip the balance of power in the House. The accusations range from helping tea party activists circulate candidate petition sheets to underwriting the creation of official tea parties, which then put forth slates of ...
An August Surprise from Obama? Is Obama about to forgive billions in mortgage principal? Post Date: 2010-08-05 13:43:58 by Brian S

Main Street may be about to get its own gigantic bailout. Rumors are running wild from Washington to Wall Street that the Obama administration is about to order government-controlled lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to forgive a portion of the mortgage debt of millions of Americans who owe more than what their homes are worth. An estimated 15 million U.S. mortgages one in five are underwater with negative equity of some $800 billion. Recall that on Christmas Eve 2009, the Treasury Department waived a $400 billion limit on financial assistance to Fannie and Freddie, pledging unlimited help. The actual vehicle for the bailout could be the Bush-era Home Affordable Refinance ...
How Marijuana Could Split the Tea Party Post Date: 2010-08-05 11:30:40 by Brian S

It's well recognized that Tea Partiers don't agree on everything, and that in fact they disagree over quite a lot. Get enough organizers together in the same room, an activist once told me, and you're bound to have some tense arguments about politics, policy, and the movement itself. Organizers have insisted that the Tea Party stick to its core principles--less spending, less government, opposing President Obama as a socialist--and not get sidetracked by any other issues, many of them social, on which its members coincidentally also have strong opinions. But among the movement's potential fissures, here's one that hasn't been talked about so much: legalization of ...
Bush Memoirs Delayed Until After Midterm Elections, Say Friends Post Date: 2010-08-05 11:22:21 by Brian S

George W. Bush insisted that publication of his forthcoming memoirs, "Decision Points", which will elaborate on 10 key decisions that the self-dubbed "Decider" took in office, be put back until after the midterm elections, according to people close to the former president. Mr Bush has maintained a studious silence since leaving office and has declined, in sharp contrast to Dick Cheney, his former vice-president, to criticise Barack Obama, the US president, over the past 18 months. According to friends of Mr Bush, he resisted plans by the publisher to launch the book in September, which is traditionally a better time to maximise sales. His friends say that Mr Bush, ...

DOWNLOADS: (224) PLAYS: (1038) It was pretty amusing watching Karl Rove and Neil Cavuto yesterday talking at length on Cavuto's Fox show about how Democratic senators played a key role in the passage of the Bush tax cuts back in 2001 without bothering to point out the obvious -- and stark -- contrast with their Republican counterparts in 2009. They were trying to build a case for Democrats to support continuing the Bush tax cuts, but all they really did was remind everyone exactly why Democrats have no reason to play ball with these a-holes any longer: they will never compromise and work together with President Obama and Democrats to pass anything, and never ...
The Tea Party's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Night Post Date: 2010-08-04 13:44:47 by Brian S

Another Tuesday, another round of Republican primaries pitting self-proclaimed Tea Party candidates against their (sometimes slightly, sometimes considerably) more moderate opponentsand yet another sign that the Glenn Beck brigade is a long way from "taking back the country," despite all the hype. So far, the Tea Party has been the major political story of the 2010 election cycle, and in many ways it's a fascinating, vibrant reflection of America's current fixations and frustrations. But given that the vast majority of the movement's favored candidates have lost their Republican primary battlesand given that the few candidates who've won, like Rand ...
Tea Party vs. Tea Party Caucus Post Date: 2010-08-02 16:42:23 by Brian S

To anxious Republicans trying to channel grass-roots conservatism, the Congressional Tea Party Caucus is part of the solution. To many in the tea party, the caucus seems like part of the problem. Instead of embracing the caucus and its 49 House members, many tea party activists see it as yet another effort by the GOP to hijack their movement and symptomatic of a party establishment that, they say, is condescending and out of step with their brand of conservatism. At a news conference after the caucuss first weekly meeting July 21, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), flanked by about a dozen tea party activists, stressed that it was not an effort to control or speak for the ...
Breitbart's 'Minority-Based Tea Party Event' Fails To Attract Minorities Post Date: 2010-08-02 13:58:10 by Brian S

The Republican National Committee has postponed a fundraiser with right-wing media tycoon Andrew Breitbat, citing a scheduling change. While its not entirely clear why the event was delayed, Breitbart has been under heavy fire recently even from conservatives for his misleading and racially-tinged campaign to smear former USDA official Shirley Sherrod. News of the fundraisers cancellation came on the same day that Breitbart held a minority-based Tea Party event in Philadelphia, which promised to show the inclusiveness of the tea party movement. Since the NAACP condemned racist elements within the tea party movement last month, ...

Instead of showing up in the Show Me state in a dialing-for-votes effort with Rep. Roy Blunt, she went home after a trip to the hospital. "This isn't serious," her spokeswoman Gina Countryman told the Pioneer Press. "She's gonna be fine. She just needed to rest." A Tea Party Favorite, Republican Rand Paul Alters Tone In Bid To Capture Kentucky Senate Seat Post Date: 2010-07-31 12:12:09 by Brian S

A tea party success story in search of a statewide triumph, Kentucky Republican senatorial candidate Rand Paul volunteers that he's spent two decades "popping off" about one issue or another. Not quite so much now, though. The candidate who strongly criticized federal subsidies for agriculture isn't quite as dug in these days. Running in a state with 85,000 farms, he now says merely that Department of Agriculture funds may need to be cut in the interests of deficit reduction. After saying provocatively that he might not support Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell for Republican leader, Paul now proclaims himself a big fan of the man who is a living embodiment of the party ...
