Pakistan's minorities gripped by fear and despair

LONDON - As a teenager in Karachi, the southern port city of Pakistan, much of my time was spent as a pedestrian. I absorbed the trends and culture of this diverse city, gathering sermons, dialects, laughter, aspirations, love and hatred during my walks. With 18 million residents, Karachi is the world’s third most populous city by some counts. Residents include Muslims, Hindus, Christians and fire-worshipping Zoroastrians and it teems with different ethnicities, including Afghans, Bengalis, Burmese, Chinese, Sri Lankans, Filipinos and Iranians. I was lucky enough to experience it first hand: I have watched Muslims running barefoot to mosques for prayers, Christians worshipping in ...

What Do The Muslim Brotherhood And The Ultra-Orthodox Religious-Right Have In Common?

Israelis complain about the Muslim Brotherhood, but fail to take on rabbis whose rhetoric is no less incendiary. By Anshel Pfeffer A few months from now, Egypt may come under the rule of a government dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, whose supreme spiritual leader said just a few years ago that God would "destroy the seed of the Jews and extirpate them from the world. These Jews are accursed scoundrels, crying crocodile tears while they murder people; it is forbidden to have any mercy on them. We have to destroy them with great missiles." And if you think this is populist scare-mongering, and that this represents only one benighted faction of the popular ...

Christian Writer: Muslim Brotherhood 'Similar' To U.S. Evangelicals

A Christianity Today guest columnist has a surprising take on Egypt's future and how the nation's Christians might be better off if the Muslim Brotherhood takes a major role in the next government. That seems unexpected in the same online CT edition that features a different article on Copts, the major Christian group and victims of recent deadly attacks, who are watching developments with fear. Their reporter in Cairo thinks lovely pictures of last week of Copts and Muslims arm in arm are an anomoly. But the more controversial opinion piece comes from Bob Kubinec, identified as a "consultant" who has researched "religious and political issues in Egypt and Jordan, and ...

Senate Passes Bill to Teach Bible in Kentucky Schools FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Bible classes could be taught in Kentucky public schools under a bill that's made it halfway through the legislature. The Senate voted 34-1 to approve the measure on Wednesday. Under the Kentucky proposal, Bible courses would be offered as electives, meaning students could decide whether to take them. Republican Sen. Joe Bowen of Owensboro, the bill's sponsor, said the intention is to acquaint students with a book that has had tremendous impact on American society and western culture. Democratic Sen. Kathy Stein of Lexington said the measure is unnecessary because nothing currently prohibits Kentucky ...

New Catholic Bible Deletes ‘Cereal,’ ‘Booty’ And ‘Holocaust’

It's not the first time Catholics have tried to modernize the Bible but it may be the oddest. The New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE), which was set to make its debut on Ash Wednesday, March 9, aimed to make the text easier to understand by making a number of little tweaks, both subtle and obvious, in hopes of making it easier to read. Among them, deleting the words "cereal," "booty" and, oddly enough, "holocaust," was said to have taken place to help people better understand scripture. Catholic translations of the Bible go back to 1582 when the Douay-Rheims Bible was published. The first edition of the New American Bible was published in 1970. ...

NY Muslim TV station owner promotes "cultural understanding", beheads wife

Jury convicts NY TV executive of beheading wife The founder of a Muslim-oriented New York television station has been convicted of beheading his wife in 2009. Muzzammil "Mo" Hassan never denied that he killed Aasiyah Hassan inside the suburban Buffalo station the couple established to promote cultural understanding. A jury on Monday rejected his claim he was the victim of spousal abuse. Hassan acted as his own lawyer during the trial in Buffalo. The Pakistan-born Hassan has been in custody since Feb. 12, 2009, when he walked into the Orchard Park police station and told officers his wife was dead. Her decapitated body was found at the studios of Bridges TV in town. The ...

Plymouth-Canton School District in Michigan allows students to wear kirpan daggers to class

Zahrasyed/FlickrA kirpan is a dagger or sword, and must be worn by baptised Sikhs. A school district in Michigan says it's okay for kids to bring daggers to school - but there are a few rules. The first rule is you have to be baptized as a Sikh. The decision by the Plymouth-Canton School District was put into effect on Monday, reversing a ban established in December, when a fourth-grade student brought a three- to five-inch weapon to Bentley Elementary School. The kirpan, which can be a dagger or a sword, must be worn by baptized Sikhs at all times. "It's a religious symbol," local community leader Tejkiran Singh told WJBK Fox 2 News in Detroit. "It just ...

Faithful Facebook: Pope Benedict Blesses Social Networking

Pope Benedict XVI may be old, but he's still with it. Wracked with Catholic guilt every time you access Facebook? Worry no longer -- the Pope approves. In a message entitled "Truth, Proclamation and Authenticity of Life in the Digital Age," Pope Benedict XVI gave social networking his blessing, but warned that it cannot replace real human contact. The proclamation, created for the Catholic Church's World Day of Communications, noted, "I would like then to invite Christians, confidently and with an informed and responsible creativity, to join the network of relationships which the digital era has made possible." The pontiff encouraged social networkers to be ...

The Number of Religious Facilities Unable to Pay Their Mortgage Is Surging ROSEVILLE, Calif.—Residential and commercial real-estate owners aren't the only ones losing their properties to foreclosure. The past few years have seen a rapid acceleration in the number of churches losing their sanctuaries because they can't pay the mortgage. Just as homeowners borrowed too much or built too big during boom times, many churches did the same and now are struggling as their congregations shrink and collections fall owing to rising unemployment and a weak economy. Since 2008, nearly 200 religious facilities have been foreclosed on by banks, up from eight during the previous two years ...

Aharon Friedman, Capitol Hill Staffer Who Won't Grant Wife Jewish Divorce

It sounds like a dark fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm: A young and lovely woman marries a successful young man. A daughter arrives. But the story takes a turn. The couple quarrel. The young bride flees with the baby daughter to her parents. Then the young man casts a spell, condemning the woman to a life in chains; not with him, not with anyone. No more family. Take a little literary license with the spell and you've got the story of Aharon Friedman and Tamar Epstein, Orthodox Jews who divorced through Maryland civil courts -- in what sounds like an entirely uncivil manner -- but who have not yet been divorced by a Beit Din, a Jewish Rabbinical court. The reason is that Friedman, ...

Who's the Grinch? Christians Usually the Aggressors in 'Christmas Wars'

The 2010 skirmishes in the "Christmas wars" hammer down a historical fact: Where there have been battles over the long millennia, the aggressors have most often been Christians trying to impose religious order on a festival that has never been as tame or faith-flavored as they would like. Consider the high dudgeon expressed by Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) at the possibility of the legislature continuing to work past mid-December: "It is impossible to do all of the things that the majority leader laid out without doing -- frankly, without disrespecting the institution and without disrespecting one of the two holiest of holidays for Christians and the families of all of the Senate, ...

Bishop Takes Away US Hospital's Catholic Status Over Surgery That Ended Pregnancy

PHOENIX - The Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix stripped a major hospital of its affiliation with the church Tuesday because of a surgery that ended a woman's pregnancy to save her life. Bishop Thomas Olmsted called the 2009 procedure an abortion and said St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center — recognized internationally for its neurology and neurosurgery practices — violated ethical and religious directives of the national Conference of Catholic Bishops. "In the decision to abort, the equal dignity of mother and her baby were not both upheld," Olmsted said at a news conference announcing the decision. "The mother had a disease that needed to be ...

4 In 10 Americans Still Hold Creationist Views

If you're in a room of 100 people, odds are likely about 40 think God created humans about 10,000 years ago, part of a philosophy called creationism, according to a Gallup poll reported Friday (Dec. 17). That number is slightly lower than in years past and down from a high of 47 percent in both 1993 and 1999. And 38 percent of Americans, the poll estimates, believe God guided the process that brought humans from "cavemen" to today's incarnation over millions of years, while 16 percent think humans evolved over millions of years, without any divine intervention.   This secular view, while a relatively small number, is up from 9 percent in 1982, according to Gallup. ...

Pope Calls Christians The Most Persecuted

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- Pope Benedict XVI singled out Christians as the religious group that suffers from the most persecution on Thursday, denouncing lack of freedom of worship as an "intolerable" threat to world security. The message reflected a pressing concern by Benedict in recent months for the plight of Christian minorities in parts of the world, especially in the Middle East. "Sadly, the year now ending has again been marked by persecution, discrimination, terrible acts of violence and religious intolerance," Benedict lamented in the message for World Peace Day, celebrated by the church on Jan. 1, but traditionally released in advance He wrote that he was ...

Nashville billboards claim Jesus will return May 21, 2011 There are 24 shopping days left till Christmas. And 171 days left until Jesus' second coming. That's the message on 40 billboards around Nashville, proclaiming May 21, 2011, as the date of the Rapture. Billboards are up in eight other U.S. cities, too. Fans of Family Radio Inc., a nationwide Christian network, paid for the billboards. Family Radio's founder, Harold Camping, predicted the May date for the Rapture. Their message is simple — "He Is Coming Again" — and their aim is to get unbelievers to turn around quickly. But critics say the billboards are a waste of time, one more failed attempt ...

(rabbi): Israel Forest Fire 'Divine Retribution' For Failure To Observe Sabbath

Israeli police have detained two teenagers who are suspected of inadvertently starting the blaze, which killed 41 people, by leaving a bonfire unattended. Ovadia Yosef, the spiritual leader of Shas, a powerful religious party in Israel's coalition government, said there was little doubt that the fire was sent by God to punish his chosen people for their waywardness. In his weekly sermon, the rabbi quoted a section from the Talmud, a central Jewish religious text, which proclaimed that "the fire only exists in a place where the Sabbath is desecrated". "Homes were ruined, entire neighbourhoods wiped out, and it's not arbitrary," he said. "It is all divine ...

BAGHDAD (BP)--Rahim* took one bullet in the leg, then one in the head while sitting in a church pew. But his death and the deaths of 50 other Christians gunned down with him on Oct. 31 marked more than just the ends of their lives. They symbolized the demise of the entire Christian population of Iraq, said one Baptist worker familiar with the situation. "This is not the start -- it's the period to a long-running sentence, the end of a tragic novel that's been playing out for years," said Nik Ripken*, who has served 25 years with the International Mission Board and is an expert on the persecuted church in Muslim contexts. The Islamic State of Iraq, an al-Qaida group, ...

Steve Johnson, Buffalo Bills wideout, blames God on Twitter after dropping game-winning pass It wasn't his own hands or the Pittsburgh secondary Sunday that foiled Buffalo Bills wide receiver Steve Johnson from hauling in what should have been the game-winning TD catch in the end zone. It was God. "I PRAISE YOU 24/7!!!!!!" the 24-year-old tweeted from his iPad at around 5:15 Sunday after the Steelers' 19-16 overtime victory. "AND THIS HOW YOU DO ME!!!!! YOU EXPECT ME TO LEARN FROM THIS??? HOW???!!! ILL NEVER FORGET THIS!! EVER!!! THX THO..." Johnson had a perfect pass in his hands that would have given his team an overtime victory over the heavily favored ...

NASHVILLE, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- The world's best-selling Bible has been revised after a 2002 gender-inclusive version condemned as too liberal failed to sell, its publisher says. Since 1978, the New International Version has been the most popular Bible among evangelicals, selling more copies than any other version, but the 2002 gender-inclusive edition was a publishing failure, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported. The new edition published online this month, with printed copies to follow in March, retains some of the language of the 2002 edition but includes changes like returning to using words such as "mankind" and "man" instead of "human beings" and ...

Pope approves use of condoms in fight against Aids

After decades of fierce opposition to the use of all contraception, the pontiff will end the Catholic Church's absolute ban on the use of condoms. Pope Benedict XV will accept that in some circumstances it is better for a condom to be used if it protects human life He will say that it is acceptable to use a prophylactic when the sole intention is to "reduce the risk of infection" from Aids. While he will restate the Catholic Church's staunch objections to contraception because it believes it interferes with the creation of life, he will argue that using a condom to preserve life and avoid death can be a responsible act – even outside marriage. Asked whether ...

Federal bankruptcy officials question Crystal Cathedral compensation

Crystal Cathedral, the Orange County mega-church that filed for bankruptcy last month, allowed its chief financial officer to skirt federal income taxes by paying the bulk of his salary in the form of a housing allowance, a benefit reserved under law for ministers. The six-figure housing allowance paid to financial officer Fred Southard -– along with compensation to members of the church founder's family –- are among the expenses questioned by the U.S. trustee's office and the creditors' committee assessing the bankruptcy case. The documents also suggest that the church paid at least three insiders for redundant duties. The filings give the first look into the ...

Police were even called to get in the middle of the spiritual showdown. "We're called to be ambassadors for Jesus Christ, ambassadors should represent, and that's what I do. I try to represent my Lord and savior Jesus Christ," said Neal Thompson Monday night, wearing the same white robe and cross, and carrying the same staff he's been using every Sunday for 22 years.
