The "Third Awakening" as presented by George Bush

President Bush said yesterday that he senses a "Third Awakening" of religious devotion in the United States that has coincided with the nation's struggle with international terrorists, a war that he depicted as "a confrontation between good and evil." Bush told a group of conservative journalists that he notices more open expressions of faith among people he meets during his travels, and he suggested that might signal a broader revival similar to other religious movements in history. Bush noted that some of Abraham Lincoln's strongest supporters were religious people "who saw life in terms of good and evil" and who believed that slavery was evil. Many of his ...

The Moral Home Front America's increasing decadence is giving aid and comfort to Muslim terrorists. By Charles Colson with Anne Morse Just after the United States invaded Afghanistan, a series of amusing cartoon panels made the rounds of the internet. Under the heading "What if the Taliban Wins?" were drawings depicting the Statue of Liberty, her face covered with a veil; a giant mosque rising where the World Trade Center stood; and an out-of-work President Bush selling fruit on the street. While the panels were funny—after all, we knew we would easily rout the Taliban—the question of which culture will ultimately prevail is a deadly serious one. Six years ago, ...

Atlantis originally was scheduled for liftoff Aug. 27 but was delayed, first by a lightning strike at the launch pad, then by Tropical Storm Ernesto. NASA had started to move Atlantis back to the hangar because of Ernesto but changed course last week. By sending the shuttle back to the launch pad, NASA gained enough time to prepare for a launch this week. If Atlantis doesn't get up in the air this week, the next chance probably won't come until the end of October. The Russians plan on Sept. 18 to launch a Soyuz capsule ferrying two new station crew members and the space station's first female tourist, Dallas-area entrepreneur Anousheh Ansari. Officials with both space agencies did not ...

"The lightning actually hit the top of the launch pad structure," Local 6's Erik von Ancken reported. "The shuttle is attached to the structure (hit by lightning) and that is why engineers are checking, testing and evaluating all of the electronics." "(The strike) could cause us to retest some of the systems onboard the ship if we decide to do that," launch Director Mike Leinbach said. Late Friday, Florida Today reported that NASA was planning to resume preparations Saturday and no delay in the flight was expected. Lightning also hit space shuttle Discovery's launch pad before launch last month. Meanwhile, mission managers continued to watch Tropical Storm ...

Jewish groups demand Mel Gibson be ostracized for anti-Semitic rant Jewish groups have called for Oscar-winning American actor Mel Gibson to be ostracised from Hollywood and investigated for breach of race hate laws after his drunken anti-Semitic outburst to a Los Angeles police officer. Gibson issued a lengthy statement Saturday apologizing for saying "despicable" things to sheriff's deputies when he was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol. The U.S. Anti-Defamation League said that the apology was not enough and that Gibson should be ostracised by his peers. Abraham H. Foxman, the group's national director, said, "It appears that the ...

The global jihadists' perpetual will to war The fundamental flaw of the Bush administration's war policy lies not so much in its actions, as in the failure to articulate a right understanding of the nature and goals of the war. The Bush policy flounders and seems to fail because in their discussion of the situation, some policymakers still rely upon a shallow, inadequate understanding of war. This shallow understanding prevails in our day, as we see every time the war against Israel erupts into actual fighting. Whatever the occasion of battle, though it be a blatant act of aggression or terror, voices arise calling for an immediate end to "violence," i.e., Israel's military ...

There have been so many deaths from California's lingering heat wave that authorities in one county began stacking bodies two to a gurney. Twenty people have died in Fresno County alone, about a quarter of the statewide toll of 81 deaths attributed to the heat. Coroner Loralee Cervantes said Wednesday that decomposition was making the causes of death difficult to determine and the office was running out of space. Outside, the temperature on Wednesday approached 110 degrees. Forecasters say a slow cooling trend is under way in the region, with highs expected to drop a few more degrees by the weekend. "We're seeing some relief coming, if you can call 105 relief," said National ...

B-Losses Are (Libertarian-)Benign

Michael Rozeff has identified two kinds of losses attributable to life in less than free societies: those due to physical violence, which he terms p-losses, and those due to beliefs that work against people57;s best interests, or b-losses ("Silver and Golden Rule Societies," May 8, 2006). While recognizing that libertarian theory tends to ignore b-losses, due to their subjective and nebulous nature, Prof. Rozeff nonetheless views them as an appropriate subject for libertarian analysis. B-losses seem to undermine human freedom and happiness. The notion of b-losses brought to mind a lunch-hour conversation I had with two business associates, and longtime friends of mine, at a ...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A tropical storm could form around Florida over the next day or two, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said Wednesday in an Atlantic tropical weather outlook at 5:30 a.m. EDT. The NHC said showers and thunderstorms were currently located over the Bahamas, central and eastern Cuba and southeastern Florida. Over the next couple of days, the system could drift slowly westward over the Florida Peninsula and into the Gulf of Mexico where several of the key U.S. oil and natural gas fields and refineries are located. The NHC said environmental conditions were unfavorable for tropical cyclone formation at this time but may become "somewhat more conducive for some slow ...
