Chalcedon: The Aftermath Post Date: 2023-03-21 18:45:08 by Charles_Byrd

Efforts were made to unify the two sides in the conflict in the latter half of the sixth century. We are no more than one hundred years after the council. Unity talks were held, documents of reconciliation drafted, non-Chalcedonian bishops were offered a diocese if they would switch sides. All came to naught. One emperor, Tiberius, refused to persecute the non-Chalcedonians. Are those whom you ask me to persecute heathens? No, came the reply from the patriarch, the one who was doing the asking. They were Christians, just not Christians in our camp. Click for Full Text!
Preaching the End Times Better (Part 3): The Parousia of Holy Communion Post Date: 2023-03-15 18:35:59 by Charles_Byrd

The assurance of Christs final Parousia should offer the faithful the greatest confidence that, despite the appearance of this wayward world, the returning Lord Jesus will redeem us, as well as the Earth itself, to the uttermost. For as He is, so we shall be (1 John 3:2). That means resurrection, but it also means our vindication for having trusted in the Lambs Word and person as judgment falls upon mockers of The Way (Galatians 6:7). Preaching the End Times better means preaching things will assuredly play-out not only just as Jesus said, but also that he is the abiding guarantor who leads us from the Incarnation, through Holy Communion, to the Final Parousia. The false ...
Preaching the End Times Better (Part 2): The Hermeneutics of Parousia Post Date: 2023-03-15 18:32:07 by Charles_Byrd

2Peter 3 proves a tour-de-force toward preaching the end times better. So far from being a locus classicus for the obliteration of the world, this epistle reinforces both the Lords justice in an assured judgment and, until that Final Day, mercy in forbearance. In other words, Saint Peter presents the End Times in clear categories of Law and Gospel as the outcome of Christological thinking. The former demands circumspection regarding a laissez faire disposition toward Christs final parousia with its righteous judgment and the latter drives those with ears to hear toward repentance and redeeming grace found in Christ alone. Either way, be it Law or Gospel, the person, word, and ...

Authenticating the Fourth Gospel (Part 2) Post Date: 2023-03-15 18:12:32 by Charles_Byrd

In part one of this article we looked at various temporal and geographical indicators referenced within the Fourth Gospel which served to corroborate the authors claim that he really could have been an eyewitness of the life of Jesus. The Gospel of John does indeed bear the marks of an authentic early first century text written by someone with accurate knowledge of Jerusalem before it was completely destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. But there is another test we can use to further establish Johns credibility, and that is by considering the names that appear throughout his Gospel. An Israeli scholar by the name of Tal Ilan compiled a database of ancient Palestinian Jewish ...
Sex as Sacred: What a Twitter Maelstrom Reveals About Us Post Date: 2023-03-14 01:19:10 by Charles_Byrd

Years ago, after a college chapel service that featured a sermon about God as Heavenly Father, the person sitting next to me turned and said bluntly, If God is a Father, I want nothing to do with Him. She was speaking from a place of deep, personal pain. However, even the worst experience with an earthly father does not change that God has revealed Himself, throughout Scripture and specifically in the words of Jesus, as our Father. I thought of my friend and that chapel service during last weeks Christian Twitter maelstrom. On Wednesday, the recently announced Keller Center for Cultural Apologetics at The Gospel Coalition published a book excerpt authored by Pastor Josh ...

I have seen Star Wars too many times. Wait, is that possible? When I say Ive seen Star Wars, I mean the original movie from May 1977, which started the whole franchise. I am dating myself a little here. I was five when I first saw it (technically four, I guess.) Heres a trivia question. Remember that Luke Skywalkers home world was Tatooine, a desert planet. Luke was raised by his uncle Owen and aunt Beru. What was the familys occupation? If you guessed moisture farmers or something along those lines, you are correct. The people of Israel, as we encounter them in this weekends Old Testament reading from the Book of Exodus, could have used a moisture farm or two. ...

Loss of Religious Belief Is a Greater Loss for a Civilized Society Post Date: 2023-02-27 16:17:06 by Charles_Byrd

There has been a noticeable decline in the percentage of Americans identifying as religious. Some perceive this seismic shift as evidence of a secularizing culture. In some quarters, the secularization of America is viewed favorably as an agent of modernization. But researchers are theorizing that the erosion of religious beliefs portends negative consequences for society because religion cultivates meaningful social relationships by nurturing a sense of community. Religious institutions hone social capital by fostering a strong sense of brotherhood that transcends tribalism. Religions also make it easier for societies to scale up by diminishing tribalism and promoting cooperation. ...
THE THREE WORLDS OF EVANGELICALISM Post Date: 2023-02-26 01:59:14 by Charles_Byrd

American evangelicalism is deeply divided. Some evangelicals have embraced the secular turn toward social justice activism, particularly around race and immigration, accusing others of failing to reckon with the churchs racist past. Others charge evangelical elites with going woke and having failed their flocks. Some elites are denounced for abandoning historic Christian teachings on sexuality. Others face claims of hypocrisy for supporting the serial adulterer Donald Trump. Old alliances are dissolving. Former Southern Baptist agency head Russell Moore has left his denomination. Political pundit David French has become a fearsome critic of many religious ...
Effort Launched to Get Black Christians to “Affirm” LGBTQ+ Post Date: 2023-02-24 05:17:51 by Charles_Byrd

LGBTQ+ advocates will meet on Friday at Union Theological Seminary in New York City to engage in an historic conversation to advocate for change within the Black Church for the Black Queer Community. In an article I penned yesterday for The New American, I explained how the progressive Left wants to infiltrate the Evangelical Christian community in the United States to advance their left-wing world view. This event at Union Theological Seminary is yet another attempt, this time to manipulate black Christians into what is essentially a Marxist cause. The one-day symposium, entitled The State of the Black Church: Reconciling Communities and Reimagining ...

They say a revival has taken place in a small Kentucky town. On February 8th, students at Asbury Universitya private Christian school in Wilmore, Kentucky, just outside Lexingtongathered for their weekly chapel service. The preacher for the day, Rev. Zach Meerkreebs, offered a message in which he prayed, Lord, revive us with your love. Immediately afterward, Meerkreebs texted his wife, saying that he didnt think the sermon was very good. Whiffed again, he told her. As he took his seat, a song began to play. The students in the room sang and offered praise in response. But they didnt stop. It just kept going. Click for Full Text!

‘Our Parent in Heaven’: Liberals push for a gender-neutral God Post Date: 2023-02-13 16:54:19 by Charles_Byrd

At a time when Church membership has hit an all-time low in the Western world, it might seem odd that Christian leaders appear more determined than ever to alienate whats left of their dwindling flock through woke nonsense. In December, for example, the Dean of Trinity College left an assembly of worshippers in tears after he argued that the body of Jesus Christ appeared to be trans. Part of the reasoning was due to the wound on his side, made by a Roman spear as the son of God hung dying on the cross, which had a decidedly vaginal appearance. I will let the reader make of that what they will. Click for Full Text!

Two days after gathering in London for the latest General Synod, the church revealed that it plans to launch a commission this spring tasked with investigating the use of gendered language in prayers, baptisms, and general usage. Preaching Predestination with Jim Nestingen Post Date: 2023-02-03 15:16:28 by Charles_Byrd

Not long ago, a friend and mentor of mine died and went into his (very much unearned) reward with Jesus Christ. James A. Nestingen was known to many in the Lutheran world and outside of it for his bold testimony to Christ and the salvation he bestows. Jim was many things, above all, a family man. But his public vocation was that of preacher and teacher of the church. His scholarship on the Reformation has shaped our understanding of the sixteenth century, and his personality was larger than life, leaving an impression on all he encountered. There are many contributions of Jim's career that we should remember. But one worth noticing is Jim's understanding of preaching ...
