Over the weekend, Republican Senate candidate Sharon Angle told the founder of the Christian Coalition that her campaign was part of God's plan.Angle is trying to build a wide coalition in Nevada between libertarian-leaning Tea Party supporters and social conservatives in an attempt to defeat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.Conservative activist Ralph Reed asked Angle about her surging popularity in an interview posted to his website Tuesday."How do you explain all this?" Reed queried. "You're now a national story, are you kind of overwhelmed by it all?""I believe that God has been in this from the beginning and because of that when he has a plan and a ...

Leading neoconservatives including Bill Kristol have launched an anti-Obama pro Israel group, the Emergency Committee for Israel, Ben Smith reports: Leading conservatives will launch a new pro-Israel group this week with a scathing attack on Rep. Joe Sestak, the Democratic Senate candidate in Pennsylvania, the first shot in what they say will be a confrontational campaign against the Obama administration’s Mideast policy and the Democrats who support it. The Emergency Committee for Israel’s leadership unites two major strands of support for the Jewish state: The hawkish, neoconservative wing of the Republican Party, many of whom are Jewish, and conservative Evangelical ...

Earth is much younger than previously thought

Researchers have calculated that the planet could have taken far longer to form following the birth of the solar system 4.567 billion years ago than scientists have previously believed. By comparing chemical isotopes from the Earth's mantle with those from meteorites, geologists at the University of Cambridge claim the planet reached its current size around 4.467 billion years ago. Scientists have in the past estimated that the Earth's development, a process known as accretion where gas, dust and other material clumped together to form the planet, happened over just 30 million years. But the new research suggests this process may have taken up to 100 million years – more ...

New Black Panther’s Shabazz: Fox News Stoking Racial Fears By Don Irvine | July 8, 2010 New Black Panther Party Chairman Malik Shabazz told a Russian TV reporter that Fox News should be ashamed of themselves and that the charges of voter intimidation leveled against them by the Justice Department had no merit. Shabazz also said the Fox News audience was made up of mostly white right wingers, some independents, confederates and racist organizations and that their base are mostly dissatisfied whites who want to take back America. If anything one could accuse Shabazz of fomenting violence as he talked about a potential confrontation with the Tea Party Movement in September saying ...

A disgruntled Catholic priest was charged Tuesday with raiding church coffers to finance a double life befitting a mogul - and to pay for male escorts. The Rev. Kevin Gray, former pastor at Sacred Heart in Waterbury, Conn., was charged with first-degree larceny, which carries up to 20 years in prison. He allegedly stole $1.3 million over seven years and spent some of the cash on designer duds and luxury Manhattan hotels and restaurants. Gray, 64, stayed at the W Hotel and the Waldorf-Astoria, ate at Tavern on the Green and bought Armani and Brooks Brothers suits, cell phones and laptops, said Waterbury police Capt. Christopher Corbett. He opened credit card accounts for two men he had ...

A Walpole priest was charged yesterday with sexually assaulting a man he’d followed into the woods at a Canton rest stop, police said. The Rev. Emile R. “Mike” Boutin, 46, a youth pastor at Blessed Sacrament in Walpole, pleaded not guilty to indecent assault and battery at his arraignment in Stoughton District Court, said Norfolk District Attorney spokesman David Traub. Boutin, ordained in 1991, was ordered to “refrain from public ministry” pending the outcome of his criminal case, said Terrence Donilon, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Boston. At about 8:30 a.m. yesterday, a 21-year-old man told police he pulled into the Park & Ride lot off Route 138 in ...

Report: With dozens of past priest sex abuse cases, Kansas Catholic dioceses not forthcoming

By Associated Press 2:39 PM CDT, June 23, 2010 LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A newspaper report says that Kansas Catholic dioceses are still keeping information about abusive priests from the public. The Lawrence Journal-World reported Wednesday that its two-year investigation with local cable television's 6News found several dozen cases of alleged sexual abuse by priests, stretching back to the 1950s. But the newspaper also says it was unable to determine the extent of the problem because church officials in Kansas provided only limited information. That's despite 2002 reforms by the church promising to be open and transparent with the public about sexual abuse.

Academy Award-winning actor and ardent Israel supporter Jon Voight published a missive to the US president in The Washington Times on June 22. While the Los Angeles headlines have been dominated by the Kobe Bryant and the Lakers' "desperate" quest for an NBA title win against the Celtics, the region's religion news is considerably more grim: newly released court documents confirm that L.A. Cardinal Mahony admitted in a sworn deposition to sheltering an abusive priest during the 1980s. (This news comes just a few days after Pope Benedict wrapped up the "Year for Priests" with another apology for the global clergy abuse scandal.) The abuser, Father Michael Baker, is currently serving a 10-year prison term. Investigators have decided that there isn't enough evidence to file charges against the ...

Santiago, Chile (CNN) -- The archbishop of Santiago has asked the Vatican to investigate a priest accused of sexually abusing four minors, a church official said. Archbishop Francisco Javier Errazuriz decided to ask the Vatican to intercede after learning of the grave accusations against the Rev. Fernando Karadima, the church official said in a statement broadcast Friday on CNN Chile, CNN's partner network in the nation, and on the Chilean church's website. "The strong accusations, their painful airing on television, the scandal they have provoked and the investigative process have produced in our community sentiments of suffering, disorder and lack of faith," Errazuriz ...

President Barack Obama's chief of staff, then a congressman in Illinois, apparently attempted to trade favors with embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich while he was in office, according to newly disclosed e-mails obtained by The Associated Press. Emanuel agreed to sign a letter to the Chicago Tribune supporting Blagojevich in the face of a scathing editorial by the newspaper that ridiculed the governor for self-promotion. Within hours, Emanuel's own staff asked for a favor of its own: The release of a delayed $2 million grant to a school in his district. The 2006 discussion occured with Blagojevich's top aide, Deputy Gov. Bradley Tusk, and doesn't appear to cross legal ...

Everyone from Slate to National Review is credulously citing a report in The Daily Telegraph that White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel is planning to leave after the midterm elections. It's silly that a report from a unnamed source to a British newspaper with no sources to speak of in the White House would be given such credence today. The truth is this: Emanuel has said publicly and privately for months that if Rich Daley doesn't seek reelection (which he will determine at the end of the year) for mayor of Chicago, Rahm will move back home and jump in the race. He may leave his job then anyway, mostly because he's just tired. But he continues to enjoy Obama's full ...

Washington insiders say he will quit within six to eight months in frustration at their unwillingness to "bang heads together" to get policy pushed through. Mr Emanuel, 50, enjoys a good working relationship with Mr Obama but they are understood to have reached an understanding that differences over style mean he will serve only half the full four-year term. Friends say he is also worried about burnout and losing touch with his young family due to the pressure of one of most high profile jobs in US politics. Napolitano: Internet Monitoring Needed to Fight Homegrown Terrorism

WASHINGTON -- Fighting homegrown terrorism by monitoring Internet communications is a civil liberties trade-off the U.S. government must make to beef up national security, the nation's homeland security chief said Friday. As terrorists increasingly recruit U.S. citizens, the government needs to constantly balance Americans' civil rights and privacy with the need to keep people safe, said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. But finding that balance has become more complex as homegrown terrorists have used the Internet to reach out to extremists abroad for inspiration and training. Those contacts have spurred a recent rash of U.S.-based terror plots and incidents. ...

By Tom Heneghan, Religion Editor Reuters Thursday, June 17, 2010; 12:16 PM PARIS (Reuters) - A messy dispute has broken out in Germany's Catholic Church after a bishop accused of abusing minors said his superiors had tricked Pope Benedict into retiring him and he might ask the Vatican to be reinstated. Bishop Walter Mixa, who quit in April after admitting he had slapped children decades ago, said fellow bishops conspired to force him to tender his resignation and used a flimsy allegation of sexual abuse as a "trump card" to get Benedict to accept it. The bishops concerned flatly denied the accusations and hinted that Mixa, 69, who had stayed briefly in a psychiatric clinic ...
