RIP: Adblock Plus [money-grubbing sellouts] Post Date: 2016-02-13 07:30:53 by Tooconservative

I got a little too excited when the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) chief called Adblock Plus (ABP) "an unethical, immoral, mendacious coven of techie wannabes." I immediately wanted to know when the next coven meeting was and how many stars to sew onto my witch cape. The chief's accusations of heresy came after ABP was disinvited from the bureau's Leadership Summit. IAB's chief further twisted the ceremonial dagger by saying they weren't invited "in the first place." After that splendid outburst of public bitchiness, finding and joining the ad-blocking coven was my destiny. But little did I know that any ad-free witchery Adblock Plus might've ...
Your Old USB Flash Drive Could Help Fight North Korean Repression Post Date: 2016-02-09 16:47:02 by Willie Green

A tiny USB memory stick is unlikely to bring down Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, but thousands upon thousands of them just might help enlighten the North Korean people to the freedoms enjoyed by the outside world, according to human-rights activists. The New York-based Human Rights Foundation and Forum 280, a Silicon Valley nonprofit, have teamed up to launch a program that will collect donated USB flash drives, load them with content ranging from "South Korean soap operas to Hollywood films to Korean-language versions of Wikipedia to interviews with North Korean defectors," and smuggle them into the North for ordinary North Koreans to enjoy. The goal of the initiative, dubbed ...
The Pirate Bay is now the largest video streaming site in the world Post Date: 2016-02-08 23:35:06 by A K A Stone

Netflix has a lot of streaming content, but so do services like Hulu and HBO. The Pirate Bay has put them all to shame now with the combination of in-browser streaming technology combined with its usual disregard for copyright. TPB is the first major torrent tracker to support a new streaming plugin called Torrents-Time. After downloading, users can stream any video listed on the site. Torrents-Time is a separate project that is not directly affiliated with TPB. It has been integrated with a few smaller sites, and theres a dedicated website for the service. Its also (partially) open source and available on GitHub. The Pirate Bay has Torrents-Time links right next to the ...

I've noticed some issues with the site being inaccessible recently. A check has shown the difficulty has been with the entire linode data center, as linode.com (the host for the web server for this site) has also been inaccessible. A check just now with linode shows a report by linode staff that a DOS attack has been in play against the data center, likely having nothing to do with this site. They are taking care of it, and hopefully all will be well soon. Linode has been a very reliable and high quality service, consistently, for the many years I've been with them, so this type of thing is very unusual, but they are on top of it.
Targeting racist trolls by putting their comments on local billboards Post Date: 2015-12-01 08:09:25 by Willie Green

Brazilians who post racist abuse online may see their words blown up and pasted onto billboards near their houses. The campaign is called "Virtual racism, real consequences" and it's backed by Criola, a civil rights organisation run by Afro-Brazilian women. The group collects comments from Facebook or Twitter and uses geolocation tools to find out where the people who have posted them live. They then buy billboard space nearby and post the comments in huge letters, although names and photos are pixelated.Criola's founder Jurema Werneck says the campaign is intended to encourage people to speak out and report racism. "Those people [who post abuse online] think they can ...
How Comcast wants to meter the Internet Post Date: 2015-10-27 15:53:10 by Willie Green

NEW YORK (AP) This year marked a turning point for Comcast, the cable giant: It now has more Internet than TV customers. And it's trying out how to charge you for the amount of data you use, much the way Verizon and AT&T do for wireless customers. Why risk doing something that upsets customers? Most large cable companies AT&T and some smaller providers are the main exceptions offer unlimited data plans. The reason is simple. Comcast currently takes in more revenue from video customers than from Internet customers, but that's not likely to be true forever. A small but growing number of consumers are skipping cable subscriptions as hours spent watching ...
Tired Of Telemarketers? So Is The FCC Post Date: 2015-10-22 08:42:47 by Willie Green

Telemarketers have been a real annoyance to everyone over the last few decades. Although the FCC is not the source of these calls, it is not uncommon for the Commission to receive consumer complaints over unwanted robocalls and telemarketers. Although there have been some attempts in the past to resolve these issues, it persists as a growing problem. Now the FCC plans to help develop technologies to block these unwanted calls going to both landline and mobile phone users. The FCC's Role The FCC's plan to encourage the development of these "do-not-disturb" technologies is fairly simple. Each week, the FCC receives numerous user complaints about telemarketers. The ...

Millions of people visiting weather.com, drudgereport.com, wunderground.com, and other popular websites were exposed to attacks that can surreptitiously hijack their computers, thanks to maliciously manipulated ads that exploit vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash and other browsing software, researchers said. The malvertising campaign worked by inserting malicious code into ads distributed by AdSpirit.de, a network that delivers ads to Drudge, Wunderground, and other third-party websites, according to a post published Thursday by researchers from security firm Malwarebytes. The ads, in turn, exploited security vulnerabilities in widely used browsers and browser plugins that install malware on ...

Feel like your network bandwidth is slipping away? Windows 10 could be the culprit. Microsofts new desktop operating system has employed a torrent-style approach to sharing updates with your fellow Windows 10 users. The OS employs a system of sharing updates between users PCs and across their own networks rather than download direct from Microsoft. The system is called Windows Update Delivery Optimisation, or WUDO. WUDO came to light as people began downloading Windows 10 released on Wednesday to their machines. Its been causing surprises. According to Microsoft, WUDO lets you get updates when theres limited or unreliable connection to the internet. ...

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler is emphasizing the critical role of the Internet in modern life, communication, education and employment. The Federal Communications Commission is redefining broadband access as a new "lifeline" feature in addition to the landline and wireless phone access many low-income American familes already receive. For 30 years, low-income households have received assistance from the federal government in paying their phone bills. Now, Wheeler is proposing the same subsidized access to advanced telecommunications services, ensuring that all Americans can afford broadband Internet service. "Broadband is every bit as important today as plain old phone ...

Okay - this is really dumb - and kind-of embarrassing. Computers have audio jacks - right? Sure they do. They USED to be LABELED as to what they are. Right? And they still ARE labeled (sometimes) with little itsy bitsy symbols molded into the black plastic. These symbols cannot easily be read and understood - (except by blind people). So that is why - luckily - someone, about 35 years ago - came up with a color scheme for the jacks (plugs). 'Red is this, green is that' - etc. Now you might THINK that someone would have memorizedthat color scheme in the past 37 years. Ah! But you would be wrong. I'm trying to wire up this new computer into my mess - and I realize that I am ...

A handful of autonomous cars have been in accidents during test runs in California, posing a key question for the future of driverless vehicles: Are they actually any safer? Four of the about 50 self-driving cars in California have been in accidents since September, the Associated Press reported Monday. Three of the four cars were Googles Lexus SUVs. The fourth was a Delphi Automotive car. Driverless cars have been hailed as a technology with the potential to improve safety by removing human error from roads. Two accidents took place while the cars were driving, but for the other two, humans behind the wheel had control, according to the AP. Under California law, collision reports ...

Google Maps hides an image of the Android robot urinating on Apple Post Date: 2015-04-24 09:35:46 by Willie Green

A small patch of terrain in Google Maps just south of the Pakistani city of Rawlpindi has been found to contain a bizarre image of the Android robot urinating on the Apple logo. The image, apparently an Easter egg added by a Google employee or data provider, remains visible on Google Maps itself. While some parts of Googles mapping data are user-editable, the base terrain information isnt, suggesting that whoever inserted the image has privileged access and perhaps thought it wouldnt be found. The image in its original location. Unsurprisingly, the real terrain underneath bears no resemblance to the picture, (loosely) adapted from a famous bootleg of Bill ...

Harris and the dozen staffers gathered in his companys conference room dont exactly need to be convinced: This is what they do. And by the time the 2016 presidential campaign is over, these twentysomethings expect to be paid millions of dollars for doing it well. They already spend all day everyday on the ...

Once the session is over, you can get back in line for another turn. The Murray shelter launched the new feature Monday morning, and hope it will dispel the myth that a shelter is "a sad, depressing place" and shine special attention on cats who tend to ...

Justin Cheng, Cristian Danescu-Niculescu-Mizil and Jure Leskovec submitted the paper Antisocial Behavior in Online Discussion Communities [PDF] in early April, which details the findings from an 18-month study of banned commenters over three high-traffic communities: news giant cnn.com, political hub breitbart.com and the vocal gaming communities at ign.com. The study, which was partly-funded by Google and had the cooperation of the Disqus commenting ecosphere, compared ...

Those that have not been developed in China must be registered with the government, putting at risk corporate secrets, secure emails and encrypted data. New smoking gun further ties NSA to omnipotent Equation Group hackers What are the chances unrelated state-sponsored projects were both named "BACKSNARF"? Researchers from Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab have uncovered more evidence tying the US National Security Agency to a nearly omnipotent group of hackers who operated undetected for at least 14 years. The Kaspersky researchers once again stopped short of saying the hacking collective they dubbed Equation Group was the handiwork of the NSA, saying only that the operation had to have been sponsored by a nation-state with nearly unlimited resources to dedicate to the project. Still, they heaped new findings on top of a ...

Sony announced the much-anticipated arrival of the HBO Go app on PS4 earlier this week. Those who had been hoping the PS4 version would bring a resolution to the problem that has existed on PS3 for a year were sorely disappointed; Comcast continues to prevent its customers from accessing to the streaming service despite competitors like AT&T, Verizon, Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, and many others allowing it. Comcast has yet to offer a satisfactory answer for the lack of support. As Techdirt notes, customer complaints over the past year--since the PS3 got HBO ...

Just suppose that I wanted to create a machine that would boot from a USB flash drive - a relatively big flash drive - 32gb to 64gb - or whatever is required. And I wanted this thing to boot either Win7 or XP. Anybody here have any experience with such an experience? FYI - I am planning to create this thing on a new Zotac 'ZBox' with a Celeron processor and 4GB of memory (which I have - the memory - not the Zbox). So what I'm basically trying to do is create a 'disk-less' computer. Shouldn't be fraught with problems - Eh? Thanks for any help / insight! ZBOX 1320-U:
