The London-based human rights watchdog group assesses and ranks 14 criteria for its report: "Constitutional protection, statutory protection, privacy enforcement, identity cards and biometrics, data sharing, visual surveillance, communication interception, communication data retention, government access to data, workplace monitoring, surveillance of medical, financial and movement, border and trans-border issues, leadership, and democratic safeguards." OHIO Brunner issues paper-ballot requirement Post Date: 2008-01-03 15:07:38 by A K A Stone

Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner is ordering Franklin County and all other 56 Ohio counties that use touch-screen voting machines to provide enough paper ballots for voters who request them in the March 4 primary. Brunner issued a directive late yesterday with the order, which is a response to concerns raised in a report last month that concluded the touch-screen systems have insurmountable security flaws. Brunner wants to scrap the touch-screen systems by the fall election and have all 88 Ohio counties use paper ballots that are counted by optical scanners at a central location such as a county board of elections. Because there is not enough time to make wholesale changes before ...

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA According to the New Hampshire State Republican Party and an Associated Press report, Republican presidential candidate and Texas Congressman Ron Paul will be excluded from an upcoming forum of Republican candidates to be broadcast by Fox News on January 6, 2008. Given Ron Pauls support in New Hampshire and his recent historic fundraising success, it is outrageous that Dr. Paul would be excluded, said Ron Paul 2008 campaign chairman Kent Snyder. Dr. Paul has consistently polled higher in New Hampshire than some of the other candidates who have been invited. Snyder continued, Paul supporters should know that we are continuing ...

Republican presidential hopeful Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) refused to rule out the possibility he may run as a third-party candidate during an appearance Sunday on NBCs Meet the Press. Paul, however, downplayed expectations that he will run on a potential third-party libertarian ticket, saying I have no intention of doing that. When asked by host Tim Russert if he would promise not to run, Paul demurred, saying, I deserve one wiggle now and then and that he was 99.9 percent sure he would not run. Paul who has set a torrid fundraising pace despite trailing in the polls outlined many of the tenets of his presidential ...

That the cops have stolen peoples gold and intend to sell it isnt news to me, but rather a real world lesson on why I keep my gold in vault in Switzerland. The U.S. is behind enemy lines in my opinion. People in the U.S. are in grave danger. Its not complicated, if youve been paying attention. Of course, the majority of Americans dont see this, and wont. Theyll dig their own holes, with smiles on their faces, when the pigs hand them the shovels. Dont taze me bro, Ill dig faster. When you buy physical gold, youre REALLY hurting the machine. It gums up the works, and bad! It unravels the ponzi scheme because ...

CHICAGO - Rising US food inflation, now a 25-year high, is reminiscent of the 1970s and will continue for the next five years due to growing world economies, increased food demand and a sharp expansion of corn-based ethanol production, a top food economist said Friday. "What happened in the early '70s and what is happening today is that we have moved food input price to a new plateau. Ultimately, the consumer is going to have to absorb those increased costs," said Bill Lapp, president of Advanced Economic Solutions, who on Thursday released a study that looked at food inflation data going back to the 1960s. Futures prices on the Chicago Board of Trade, the benchmark for ...
Ohio Secretary of State confirms 2004 election could have been stolen Post Date: 2007-12-18 07:39:57 by A K A Stone

Ohio's Secretary of State announced this morning that a $1.9 million official study shows that "critical security failures" are embedded throughout the voting systems in the state that decided the 2004 election. Those failures, she says, "could impact the integrity of elections in the Buckeye State." They have rendered Ohio's vote counts "vulnerable" to manipulation and theft by "fairly simple techniques." Indeed, she says, "the tools needed to compromise an accurate vote count could be as simple as tampering with the paper audit trail connector or using a magnet and a personal digital assistant." In other words, Ohio's top ...

BOSTON (AP) - Mitt Romney has worked relentlessly to win the Republican presidential nomination for the past three years, and if he's going down, it won't be without a fight. Branded by some as an elite Northeasterner, he plunged deep into the heart of Texas - with handshakes and hugs from the first President Bush and wife Barbara - to address questions about his Mormon faith. After rival Mike Huckabee suggested Romney's religion says Jesus and the devil are brothers, Romney went on national television to try a rhetorical haymaker: "Attacking someone's religion is really going too far." And the candidate whose matinee looks and ramrod posture exude a civilized ...

Schwarzenegger Will 'Declare Fiscal Emergency' In Weeks POSTED: 2:06 pm PST December 14, 2007 UPDATED: 2:47 pm PST December 14, 2007 Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Friday he will declare a "fiscal emergency" in January to give him and the Legislature more power to deal with the state's growing deficit. Schwarzenegger made the announcement Friday after meeting with lawmakers and interest groups this week to tell them California's budget deficit is worse -- far worse -- than economists predicted just a few weeks ago. The shortfall is not $10 billion, but more than $14 billion -- a 40 percent jump that would put it in orbit with some of the state's worst ...

Friends of ALIPAC: The vast majority of responses we received to our release... Mike Huckabee's Shamnesty for Illegal Aliens! http://www.alipac.us/article-2786-thread-1-0.html ...were positive, however some of our ALIPAC supporters who favor Huckabee were disappointed, as well as, having more questions about the 'touchback' plan Huckabee advocates. According to our recent survey, only about 5.54% of ALIPAC's supporters were starting to favor Huckabee before this scandal broke. We respect everyone's opinion, but it is ALIPAC's job to warn people about immigration records and stances that are against our platform and against the wishes of the majority of Americans. ...

CINCINNATI - Operators of free food banks say they are seeing more working people needing assistance. The increased demand is outstripping supplies and forcing many pantries and food banks to cut portions. Demand is being driven up by rising costs of food, housing, utilities, health care and gasoline, while food manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers are finding they have less surplus food to donate and government help has decreased, according to Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director of the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks. "I've been doing this for 20 years, and I can't believe how much worse it gets month after month," she said. Diana Blasingame has ...

Editors note: This interview is the first in a three part series to be conducted over the next couple weeks with Republican presidential candidate and Congressman from Texas, Dr. Ron Paul. This interview deals mostly with foreign policy and national security. Foreign Policy and National Security Question 1: Dr Paul, there seems to be a cooling of relations with Russia and youve mentioned the possibility of a new Cold War with Russia developing. This could be partly attributed to U.S. foreign policy and partly attributed to Putins apparent moves to retain power. What do you attribute the cooling in the U.S./Russia relationship to and how if possible will you avert a new ...

In a telephone interview with Fox, Geoffrey Mitchell, 32, says he was approached by an operative for the Clinton campaign to ask a planted question about standing up to President Bush on Iraq war funding. The encounter happened before an event on a farm outside Fort Madison, Iowa. The Clinton event was hosted by Iowa State Sen. Gene Fraise. Mitchell tells Fox that Clinton campaign worker Chris Hayler approached him and asked him to ask Sen. Clinton a question about how she was standing up to President Bush on the question of funding the Iraq war and a troop withdrawal timeline. Mitchell told Fox the Clinton campaign wanted to contrast Clinton to Sen Barack Obama, who had recently said the ...

MEREDITH, N.H. (AP) - John McCain's 95-year-old mother, in a swipe at her son's rival Mitt Romney, said Friday that Mormons were to blame for the scandal that rocked the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. During an appearance on MSNBC, Roberta McCain laid out why her son, John, deserves to win the Republican presidential nomination. But in evaluating McCain's primary rivals, she criticized Romney's Mormon faith and his time in Salt Lake City. "As far as the Salt Lake City thing, he's a Mormon and the Mormons of Salt Lake City had caused that scandal. And to clean that up, again, it's not a subject," Roberta McCain said. John McCain quickly stepped in: ...

It looks like Hillary Clinton is backing out of a sit-down on NBC's "Today" this week, according to sources (not with the Clinton campaign) who claim knowledge. Barack Obama, you might recall, appeared on the show last week to accuse the frontrunner of improperly playing the gender card, a performance even Clinton's supporters thought was effective. You might also recall that Clinton rolled out the phrase "vast right-wing conspiracy" during a 1998 chat with the show's Matt Lauer. UPDATE: A Clinton aide tells Newsday the campaign discussed appearing on the show, seriously considered doing so, but never officially "confirmed" she'd appear.

It certainly was interesting to hear Tom Curley, head honcho of the Associated Press, describe his corporate media compatriots as gatekeepers during a speech at a fundraising dinner for the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship, a program at Columbia University for business journalists, or maybe that should be script readers in training. Curleys lament centers on the troubles they are experiencing in adapting to the new realities of the news business being wrought by the explosion of Internet use, as ever increasing numbers of people are flocking to the internet for news, leaving the corporate medialargely burdened with out-moded and expensive paper and ...
