Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance The USDA has announced that it is dropping NAIS! This is a major victory for the grassroots!! Thank you to the thousands of people who called, wrote, organized meetings, and more. Dozens of organizations, from across the country and the full range of the political spectrum, worked together on this common cause. And we succeeded in making our voices heard. USDA has stated that it is refocusing its efforts on “a new, flexible framework” that will apply only to animals moved in interstate commerce and encourage the use of “lower-cost” technology. During today’s conference call with USDA, I asked whether the agency would continue using ...

Teetotalers may want to steer clear of Fresno, Calif. The city was just awarded the dubious distinction of being the No. 1 “drunkest” city in the United States by Men’s Health magazine, as reported in USA Today. The magazine will publish a list of 100 major cities in the March issue that range from ...

The opening speaker at the first National Tea Party Convention called President Obama a "committed Socialist ideologue" who was elected because "we do not have a civics, literacy test before people can vote." "You have launched the counter-revolution," the speaker, former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.), told 600 or so delegates of the grassroots movement assembled at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville Wednesday night. "It is our nation. Tancredo also insisted on using Obama's middle name, Hussein, and said he was thankful Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona lost the 2008 presidential election because Obama has mobilized an uprising. ...

H.J. Heinz Co.Dip & Squeeze packets are scheduled to be in fast-food restaurants by the end of the year. The H.J. Heinz Co. made a bit of a splash Thursday unveiling a better single-serve package for ketchup. If the new Dip & Squeeze package can do for the Pittsburgh food company what upside-down ketchup bottles did, management could be onto something big. Meanwhile, the company is taking steps to address industry health trends, with plans to cut the sodium content of its main ketchup brand and to offer an alternative to those who don't want high fructose corn syrup on their hot dogs. In popping open its new ketchup packaging, Heinz said it had worked for two years to improve ...

(02-05) 07:48 PST Hagerstown, Md. (AP) -- The U.S. military's highest court has upheld the convictions of two soldiers for abusing Abu Ghraib prison detainees in Iraq. In opinions released Friday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces in Washington affirmed the conviction of former Army Spc. Sabrina Harman, who helped place a hooded detainee atop a box with wires in his hands. He was told he would be electrocuted if he fell off. Harman, of Lorton, Va., also was photographed giving a smiling "thumbs-up" beside a pyramid of naked detainees. The court found no errors by the judge who presided over the court-martial of former Sgt. Michael Smith, an Army dog handler. ...

Obama Channels Reagan as Democrats Approach Election

Feb. 5 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama’s politics may be drawing inspiration from an unlikely source: Ronald Reagan. The late Republican president may become Democrat Obama’s most relevant role model as the U.S. economic and political climate mirrors Reagan’s first term, which began in 1981. While Republicans suffered losses in the congressional elections of 1982, the economy began to improve by 1983. That allowed Reagan to argue that things were moving in the right direction. By 1984, he won re-election on a “It’s Morning Again in America” theme. As January’s unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 9.7 percent from 10 percent a month earlier, ...

Jobs, Unemployment And “A Deficit Of Trust”

Yesterday we were told the nation’s employers “unexpectedly” shed more jobs last month than forecast. Today we’re told that despite that, the unemployment rate “surprisingly” decreased to 9.7%. Unsurprisingly I don’t believe a word of it. Call me a cynic, call me a skeptic, but I just don’t believe much of anything coming out of the government these days (I know, let’s call it a “deficit of trust”). Don’t forget that 9.7% number comes on the heels of a report saying the government forgot to count over 800,000 lost jobs last year. When the government releases Friday’s unemployment report, nearly a million jobs could be ...

Sarah Palin's Got Ohio On Her Mind Reuters, David Catanese ESTPOLITICO (Washington) - Sarah Palin's political action committee has been selective and strategic in its donations to candidates over the past six months, but if money is any indication of where her heart lies, her political loyalties can be traced to Ohio. While SarahPAC has devoted just 5 percent of its total expenditures over that period to fellow GOP colleagues, four of the 17 candidates Palin contributed to hail from Ohio — the state where she held by far the most presidential campaign events in 2008, according to The Washington Post's candidate tracker. U.S. Unemployment Fell to 9.7% in January

Feb. 5 (Bloomberg) -- The unemployment rate in the U.S. unexpectedly declined in January to 9.7 percent, the lowest level since August, while payrolls dropped as companies boosted worker hours and overtime instead of taking on new hires. Payrolls fell 20,000 last month, reflecting a plunge in construction employment and a drop in state and local government hiring, figures from the Labor Department in Washington showed today. The factory workweek and overtime hours both increased. Companies like Cisco Systems Inc. plan to add staff as businesses update equipment and stimulus plans revive sales worldwide. The economy may be slow to overcome the 8.4 million jobs lost over the last two years, ...

Unemployment Report Set to Reflect the Bitter Face of a Jobless Recovery (The Obama Depression)

The revision is reflective of the austerity of the jobless recovery that has plagued the average American while helping return many companies to profit. The U.S. unemployment rate peaked at 10.2% in October, but for months it has lingered in double-digits. And economists expect it to remain there for much of 2010. Adding to the somber tone permeating the labor market, the number of workers filing for first-time jobless benefits unexpectedly rose last week. There were 480,000 initial jobless claims filed in the week ended Jan. 30. That's the highest level since Dec. 12 and up 8,000 from an upwardly revised 472,000 the previous week. The four-week moving average of initial claims, which ...

Dozens of teenagers saw it happen in broad daylight, but no one has come forward to identify the mob of young people who beat up a Vallejo city worker. Police have released surveillance video to generate tips. It Begins: Cash Strapped Cities Begin To Crumble John Carney | Feb. 4, 2010, 10:25 AM | 3,493 | 30 PrintTags: Financial Services, Debt Our nascent economic recovery may come too late to save many American cities from bankruptcy, which in turn will deal heavy losses to municipal bond investors and the companies that insure munis. The latest fright comes from Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania. The city is considering seeking bankruptcy protection—as well as tax hikes and asset sales—to address $68 million in debt service payments due this year. Harrisburg does not stand a chance at making its payments. The $68 million in debt service payments is four times what the city ...

The five senior leaders of the U.S. intelligence community told a Senate panel Tuesday they are “certain” that terrorists will attempt another attack on the United States in the next three to six months. The warning came during the annual threat briefing to Congress in response to questions from Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat and chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, who asked, “What is the likelihood of another terrorist-attempted attack on the U.S. homeland in the next three to six months? High or low?” “An attempted attack, the priority is certain, I would say,” Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair, a retired ...

Trace of Thought Is Found in ‘Vegetative’ Patient

He emerged from the car accident alive but alone, there and not there: a young man whose eyes opened yet whose brain seemed shut down. For five years he lay mute and immobile beneath a diagnosis — “vegetative state” — that all but ruled out the possibility of thought, much less recovery. But in recent months at a clinic in Liège, Belgium, the patient, now 29, showed traces of brain activity in response to commands from doctors. Now, according to a new report, he has begun to communicate: in response to simple questions, like “Do you have any brothers?,” he showed distinct traces of activity on a brain imaging machine that represented either ...

"I fully support the new approach presented to the Senate Armed Services Committee this week by Secretary of Defense (Robert) Gates and Admiral (Michael) Mullen." Powell has been saying for two years that he thought the policy, which was devised as a compromise in 1993 after President Bill Clinton initially proposed lifting the military's ...

Mr. LaHood said his advice to owners of recalled Toyotas was to “stop driving it, take it to a Toyota dealer because they believe they have a fix for it.” “We need to fix the problem so people don’t have to worry about disengaging the engine or slamming the brakes on or put it in neutral," Mr. LaHood said in response to questions. Let’s explode one of President Obama’s most egregious bits of nonsense concerning his profligate spending – the whole I-inherited-this-mess business. This is better known as the Blame Bush Defense. As Obama so helpfully explains, the day he walked into the Oval Office he was facing $1 trillion deficits as far as the eye could see, and there was nothing he could do about it. It was all George W. Bush’s fault. Balderdash. It is true that Bush did not restrain the out-of-control spending of the Republican Congress during his years in office, as he should have. And it’s true that the deficit when Obama took office exceeded $1 trillion. But that was true one time ...

Among Washington's most sacred of cows is the Head Start program, which has enjoyed support from across the political spectrum since its inception in 1965. Today, even otherwise poles-apart politicians like George W. Bush and Barack Obama agree that spending billions of tax dollars on Head Start is a good thing. Bush and Obama also agree on something else about Head Start -- taxpayers need not be told that it is a colossal failure, a fact officials have known since at least 2006. Washington has spent hundreds of billions on Head Start as a Great Society program designed to ensure that at-risk kids from poor and minority communities start school on an equal footing with those from ...
