After Friday, the plant, on Road 450S, will employ about 400, who will work in one shift. Mark Land, executive director of corporate communications, said the company does not know the length of the layoffs. Auditors find misuse of stimulus money in Calif. By GARANCE BURKE, Associated Press Writer Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 11:43 a.m. FRESNO, Calif. Officials in the heart of recession-battered central California misspent about $1 million in federal stimulus funds that were supposed to help adults and teenagers find jobs, state auditors said Tuesday. California's Inspector General Laura Chick said the Tulare County Workforce Investment Board used nearly $1 million in Recovery Act funds to pay for their own rent and utility bills, when the bulk of the money should have gone to finding youth summer jobs. The board got $6.8 million through a package aimed at reinvigorating the ...

New ghost towns: Industrial communities teeter on the edge * By Rick Hampson, USA TODAY RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. When Henry Kaiser arrived 55 years ago, this place was no place "a rural problem area," the government called it, so poor and isolated that the population had dropped 15% since 1940. That all changed after Kaiser, the industrialist who'd turned out ships and planes at a record pace in World War II, built the nation's largest consolidated aluminum works here on the banks of the Ohio River. The plant paid Tim Shumaker his first living wage, and he won the right to keep it two decades ago after his union was locked out for 19 months. Today, that victory ...

Morgan jobs go adiós Is cheap Mexican labor behind mass layoff at Hartselle plant? By Eric Fleischauer Staff Writer Emerson blamed the coming layoff off of 500 of its 540 Hartselle plant employees on the recession and environmental regulations, but corporate documents suggest otherwise. CR Compressors, formerly known as Copeland Corp., is operated by Emerson Climate Technologies. Despite its explanation for the layoffs, corporate disclosures show compressor sales are growing and the regulated phase-out of R22 refrigerant is improving sales. (03-02) 08:23 PST WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Jim Bunning on Tuesday again blocked the Senate from extending unemployment benefits and health insurance subsidies for the jobless. The Kentucky Republican objected Tuesday to a request by Maine Sen. Susan Collins, a fellow Republican, to pass a 30-day extension of jobless benefits and other expired measures. The measure would also extend highway programs and prevent a big cut in Medicare payments to doctors. Bunning has been single-handedly blocking the stopgap legislation since Thursday, to the increasing discomfort of Republicans like Collins. Collins said 500 people from her state would lose their unemployment benefits this week, while ...

President Barack Obama is morphing into George W. Bush, as administration attorneys repeatedly adopt the executive-authority and national-security rationales that their Republican predecessors preferred. In courtroom battles and freedom-of-information fights from Washington, D.C., to California, Obama's legal arguments repeatedly mirror Bush's: White House turf is to be protected, secrets must be retained and dire warnings are wielded as weapons. "It's putting up a veritable wall around the White House, and it's so at odds with Obama's campaign commitment to more open government," said Anne Weismann, chief counsel for Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in ...

Personally, I think that would explain a lot about his decisions and spending sprees of the last year, but thats ...
