Bushnell Regency files Chapter 11 By Greg Bordonaro gbordonaro@HartfordBusiness.com Yesterday Bushnell Regency, the company that owns a majority of the condo units in downtown Hartford's Bushnell on the Park, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy today, more than a year after it ceased payments on the property. Typically, a company files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to shield itself from creditors while it works out a court-approved reorganization plan. Bushnell Regency owns 129 condominium units within the 180-unit complex at 100 Wells St., which it uses for rental apartments and office space. The company has $8.8 million in assets, and $10.7 million in liabilities, court documents show. ...

A CBS News poll released Wednesday finds that nearly two in three Americans want Republicans in Congress to continue to challenge parts of the health care reform bill. The Senate version of the legislation was passed by the House Sunday night, and President Obama signed it into law on Tuesday. The House also passed a separate reconciliation bill, which cannot be filibustered, that is now being debated in the Senate. That bill would make changes to the bill already signed into law. Senate Republicans are now challenging whether the bill is truly a budget reconciliation bill (which is what makes it filibuster-proof) and inserting amendments designed to slow down passage. Republican ...

Klein Warns Of Thousands Of Teacher Layoffs By: NY1 News Then come back here and refresh the page. Facing severe cuts under Governor David Paterson's proposed budget, Schools Chancellor Joel Klein told the City Council's Education Committee Wednesday that 8,500 teachers could soon be laid off. The chancellor said in a worst-case scenario the department would be forced to lay off 15 percent of math, English, science and social studies teachers. State law requires the teachers with the least experience get cut first. According to a Department of Education analysis, no school district would be spared but the two hit the hardest would be District 7 in the South Bronx and District ...

About 1,200 workers at Shaw’s stores laid off By Eric Russell BDN Staff Shaw’s Supermarkets, which has 22 locations in Maine, has laid off 4 percent of its sales associate staff as part of a move to streamline operations, according to a spokeswoman. “This is something we started months ago, looking at our business practices and seeing how we can compete more effectively,” Judy Chong said Wednesday. “As any business would do, we are constantly evaluating.” All affected employees were notified Tuesday, she said. Shaw’s workers in Maine were affected, but Chong said she could not provide a store-by-store breakdown. “It really varies store to store ...

Democrats dragged themselves over the health-care finish line in part by repeating that voters would like the plan once it passed. Let’s see what they think when they learn their insurance costs will jump right away. Even before President Obama signed the bill on Tuesday, Caterpillar said it would cost the company at least $100 million more in the first year alone. Medical device maker Medtronic warned that new taxes on its products could force it to lay off a thousand workers. Now Verizon joins the roll of businesses staring at adverse consequences. In an email titled “President Obama Signs Health Care Legislation” sent to all employees Tuesday night, the telecom giant ...

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Richmond police say the bullet that hit a window of Republican Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor's office had been randomly fired skyward. Amid reports of threats and vandalism against Democrats who voted Sunday for sweeping health care reforms, Cantor said at a Washington news conference Thursday that a bullet was fired into his Richmond office. In a news release, Richmond police said that the bullet had been fired into the air early Tuesday. It hit the front window of a building that houses Cantor's campaign office as it fell to back earth at a sharp angle. The round landed on the floor of the office a foot inside a broken window pane. No one was in the ...

Democrats Near Victorious End Of Health Care Fight

(03-25) 14:22 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) -- Capping an epic struggle, congressional Democrats applied the final touches Thursday to historic legislation enshrining health care as the right of every citizen. Republicans vowed to campaign for repeal in the fall election season, drawing a quick retort from President Barack Obama: "I welcome that fight." The president spoke in Iowa as the Senate voted 56-43 for legislation making changes, including better benefits for seniors and lower- and middle-class families, to the bill he signed with a flourish at the White House on Tuesday. That cleared the way for a final, confirming vote in the House, which Democratic leaders hoped for by evening. ...

(03-25) 11:10 PDT Iowa City, Iowa (AP) -- President Barack Obama mocked Republicans' campaign to try to repeal his new health care law, saying Thursday they should "Go for it" and see how well they fare with voters. "Be my guest," Obama said in prepared remarks for the first of many appearances around the country to sell the overhaul to voters before the fall congressional elections. "I welcome that fight. Because I don't believe the American people are going to put the insurance industry back in the driver's seat." With emotions raw around the nation over the party-line vote to approve the nearly $1 trillion, 10-year law, Obama took the ...

Truth Has Fallen and Taken Liberty With It By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS There was a time when the pen was mightier than the sword. That was a time when people believed in truth and regarded truth as an independent power and not as an auxiliary for government, class, race, ideological, personal, or financial interest. Today Americans are ruled by propaganda. Americans have little regard for truth, little access to it, and little ability to recognize it. Truth is an unwelcome entity. It is disturbing. It is off limits. Those who speak it run the risk of being branded “anti-American,” “anti-semite” or “conspiracy theorist.” Truth is an inconvenience for government ...

Phil Klein has the ultra-Shermanesque statement (which cites Sherman!), made in New Hampshire last night by the Centcom commander: I thought I’d said no about as many ways as I could. I really do mean no. We have all these artful ways of doing it. I’ve tried Shermanesque responses, which everybody goes and finds out what Sherman said was pretty unequivocally no. I’ve done several different ways. I’ve tried quoting the country song, ‘What Part of No Don’t You Understand?’ I mean, I really do mean that. I feel very privileged to be able to serve our country. An initiative to legalize marijuana and allow it to be sold and taxed will appear on the November ballot, state election officials announced Wednesday, triggering what will probably be a much-watched campaign that once again puts California on the forefront of the nation's debate over whether to soften drug laws. The number of valid signatures reported by Los Angeles County, submitted minutes before Wednesday's 5 p.m. deadline, put the measure well beyond the 433,971 it needed to be certified. Supporters turned in 694,248 signatures, collecting them in every county except Alpine. County election officials estimated that 523,531 were valid. The measure's main advocate, Richard ...

March 25 (Bloomberg) -- Wall Street economist David Malpass, who worked at Bear Stearns Cos. before its collapse in March 2008, said he’ll run for the U.S. Senate because the government has failed to address the causes of the crisis. Malpass, founder and president of investment advisory firm Encima Global, said he will seek the Republican Party’s nomination to challenge Democratic incumbent Kirsten Gillibrand. Gillibrand was appointed in January 2009 to replace former Senator Hillary Clinton when she was named secretary of state. Government officials “haven’t done enough about the core problem” that led to the financial crisis and the deepest recession since the ...

Coffin placed on Carnahan's lawn A coffin was placed on a Missouri Democrat’s lawn, another in a string of incidents against lawmakers after their vote Sunday on a health care overhaul. Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.) had a coffin placed “near his home,” a spokesman said Wednesday evening. This came after Rep. Tom Perriello’s (D-Va.) brother’s gas lines were cut, Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) received death threats and Rules Committee Chairwoman Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) received a message saying snipers were being deployed to kill children of those who voted for health care overhaul. Several other Democrats have had threats leveled against them, prompting a ...

Senate GOP Trying To Scuttle “Repeal It” Amendment

Senate GOP Trying To Scuttle “Repeal It” Amendment Senate sources confirm to me this evening that Senator Mitch McConnell and his leadership team are trying to scuttle Republican efforts to force a vote on repeal of the entire health care legislation during the reconciliation process. I’m told reliably that moderate Republican senators who voted against Obamacare in December do not want to vote against it again because it would just be “symbolic”. McConnell agrees and is not inclined to push Republicans to go along with any effort to force a vote on repeal during reconciliation, despite David Vitter offering up an amendment to do just that and separate stand alone ...

Tea party movement could split votes in Nevada Republicans have their sights set on unseating Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, but with a slew of conservative candidates, the Democrat has a good shot at reelection. Reporting from Washington and Las Vegas - As the anti-establishment activists of the "tea party" movement rally in Nevada this week, a troublesome question will hang over the red-meat speeches and cheers: Are the people most determined to oust Democrat Harry Reid the ones boosting his chances of reelection? The movement that boasts of its decentralized structure is facing its most high-profile test in Nevada, where Republicans of all stripes have their sights ...

Senate GOP shuts down hearings Democratic senators ripped their Republican counterparts for forcing cancellations of hearings throughout the Senate on Wednesday, claiming that the GOP is needlessly blocking essential national security business. Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and Sen. Claire McCaskill both complained that Republicans kept them from holding their hearings on budget requests for the military's Pacific and strategic and police training contracts in Afghanistan. Either party in the Senate is allowed to object to holding hearings, as Senate rules require a unanimous consent request for hearings to be held after 2 p.m. Most of these unanimous consent requests ...

Senor, a former spokesman for the Coalition Provisional Authority that governed Iraq after the March 2003 U.S.-led invasion, is the potential candidate to decide against a run. Former Tennessee congressman Harold Ford, New York Daily News publisher Mort Zuckerman and New York Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney have all toyed with running for the seat, only to later decide against doing so.
