Violent Flash Mobs Becoming a Problem in Philly Post Date: 2010-03-28 16:26:38 by Brian S

Flash mobs are usually associated with randomized fun (or pantlessness), but in Philly, theyre basically akin to randomized violence. Last night, Mayor Michael Nutter and District Attorney Seth Williams took to the streets to spread a message to the citys young, social media-savvy inhabitants: Flash mobs will not be tolerated. According to the AP, Philadelphia has been a hotspot of flash mob-inspired havoc of late there have been five such occurrences this past year, all organized by hundreds of high schoolers and middle schoolers taking to MySpace, Twitter and other sites to organize the meetups. Unlike other flash mobs, where participants break out in song or pillow ...

When a Federal position becomes vacant which requires that the President select the candidate, often the candidate must be confirmed by the Senate. There is though, a Constitutional provision that allows the candidate to hold the office for up to a year, Recess Appointments. This allows the President to place the candidate in the position while the Senate is in recess, and the Senate has to confirm that candidate before the end of the next session, or the position becomes vacant again. Using This Power To Get The Positions Filled President Obama announced on Saturday that he would be using this provision to fill various federal positions, some of which have been vacant for more than a ...
Catholic Health Association Would Benefit Financially From Pro-Abortion Health Bill Post Date: 2010-03-28 02:33:59 by WhiteSands

From the earliest battles over health care, Sr. Carol Keehan, president of the Catholic Health Association (CHA) has been out on the front lines defending the planand attacking those who criticize her tactics. In her most recent offensive, on March 11th, Sr. Keehan wrote a letter to the House of Representatives which urged the Members to move quickly to enact health reform by passing the Senate-approved legislation. This, despite the fact that the USCCB continues to reject passage of the Senate bill. In some ways, Sr. Keehans letter to the House on March 11 was simply confirmation of what many of us already knewthat Sr. Keehans organization has been ...

Republicans Were For Obama's Health Insurance Rule Before They Were Against It Post Date: 2010-03-27 10:43:09 by go65

WASHINGTON Republicans were for President Barack Obama's requirement that Americans get health insurance before they were against it. The obligation in the new health care law is a Republican idea that's been around at least two decades. It was once trumpeted as an alternative to Bill and Hillary Clinton's failed health care overhaul in the 1990s. These days, Republicans call it government overreach. Mitt Romney, weighing another run for the GOP presidential nomination, signed such a requirement into law at the state level as Massachusetts governor in 2006. At the time, Romney defended it as "a personal responsibility principle" and Massachusetts' newest ...

Mar 27, 2010 Bill Taxing Internet (Horse) Wagers Passes Ky. Senate A bill putting a tax on phone and online horse racing bets placed by Kentuckians cleared the state Senate on Friday. FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A bill putting a tax on phone and online horse racing bets placed by Kentuckians cleared the state Senate on Friday amid a partisan debate on whether lawmakers are doing enough to rein in setbacks in the state's world-renowned equine sector. Under the proposal, money collected from the 1½ percent tax on so-called advance deposit wagers would flow into a fund that boosts purses for Kentucky-bred horses at Kentucky tracks. The measure passed on a party-line 21-17 vote, with ...
Consequences Of Health Care: Valuations (AT&T Announce extra $1 BILLION hit due to Obama-care) Post Date: 2010-03-27 02:04:08 by Nebuchadnezzar

Consequences Of Health Care: Valuations Yeah, I know, Obama has said that there would be no "material" impact to finances until 2014. Liar. Truth: Caterpillar and John Deere already announced non-cash charges of $100 and $150 million, respectively, for this year based upon the impact of this bill on forward retiree health care costs. The law says you must account for such changes when you become aware of them, and that would be now. But today a 100-kiloton device landed on AT&T's (NYSE: T) balance sheet - they announced a one billion dollar non-cash charge: On March 23, 2010, the President signed into law comprehensive health care reform legislation under the Patient ...
Court OK's Seattle Police Use Of Stun Gun On Pregnant Woman Stopped For School Zone Speeding Post Date: 2010-03-26 17:32:21 by Brian S

A federal appeals court says three Seattle police officers were justified when they used a stun gun on a pregnant mother who refused to sign a traffic ticket. Malaika Brooks was driving her son to school in 2004 when she was stopped for doing 32 mph in a school zone. Rather than give her the ticket and let her go on her way, the officers arrested her. They used a Taser three times when she refused to get out of her car. A panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 Friday that the officers were justified in using force because of the threat that Brooks could have picked up her car keys off the floor, started the car and driven away erratically. The dissenting judge called ...
John McCain Could Lose Senate Primary To Tea Party Supporter J.D. Hayworth Post Date: 2010-03-26 17:25:23 by Brian S

PHOENIX, AZ -- Rasmussen announced a new poll on Friday showing Senator John McCain may be in trouble at home where a polarized electorate has him facing constant criticism from both the left and the right. The poll shows McCain tied with former Congressman and current talk radio host J.D. Hayworth in a hypothetical Republican primary. Hayworth, who has become an outspoken local hero among immigration-control activists, lost his House seat to Rep. Harry Mitchell (D) in 2006. Since then, Hayworth has promoted the Tea Parties on his radio show and has spoken at Tea Party events, including the April 15 rally in Phoenix. Hayworth has expressed interest in running but has been tight-lipped on ...

Farm equipment maker Deere & Co (DE.N) expects after-tax expenses to rise by $150 million this year as a result of the healthcare reform law President Barack Obama signed this week. Most of the higher expense will come in Deere's second quarter, the company said on Thursday. The expense was not included in the company's earlier 2010 forecast, which called for net income of about $1.3 billion. Caterpillar Inc (CAT.N) said on Wednesday it would take a $100 million after-tax charge to earnings in the first quarter because the new law will lower its tax deductions. Obama on Tuesday signed the most sweeping U.S. social policy legislation in decades into law, putting his name on a ...
RNC Loses Bid To Raise Unlimited 'Soft' Money Post Date: 2010-03-26 14:01:45 by Brian S

(03-26) 10:24 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) -- A federal court Friday denied a Republican Party bid to raise soft money, the unlimited donations from corporations and individuals banned by a 2002 campaign finance law. In a separate ruling, judges said a conservative group can raise unlimited sums for independent election ads but must regularly disclose its donors. In a case brought by the Republican National Committee, a three-judge panel of the U.S. District Court in Washington said it lacks the authority to overturn a Supreme Court ruling that upheld the ban on soft money fundraising by national party committees. That ban is a cornerstone of the so-called McCain-Feingold law and one of the few ...

Kendrick Meek, a Democrat, said, Listen up, Buckwheat this is not how it is done, the Miami Herald reported. Buckwheat is a character from the 1920s Our Gang and The Little Rascals, the Herald reported. The character is considered by many African-Americans to be disparaging. Gas up $1 a gallon on the watch of the worst President in history Post Date: 2010-03-26 12:53:11 by dont eat that

Gas prices have risen $1 since just after President Obama took office in January 2009 and are now closing in on the $3 mark, prompting an evaluation of the administration's energy record and calls for the White House to open more U.S. land for oil exploration. The average price per gallon across the U.S. hit $2.81 this week, according to the Energy Information Administration. That was up from $1.81 the week of Jan. 26, 2009, just after the inauguration, and marks the highest price since Oct. 20, 2008. John B. Townsend II, a spokesman for AAA Mid-Atlantic, said price increases are a result of the cost of crude oil, thanks to a decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting ...

In the dead of night on Sunday, Democrats rammed their health-care overhaul through Congress. Some say we made history. I say we broke with history, turning our back on this countrys finest traditions of limited government, personal responsibility, and the consent of the governed. Republicans remain committed to reforming health care in a way that honors these values. For the past year we have suggested ways to fix the system by reducing costsspecifically through instituting tort reform and by allowing Americans to purchase insurance across state lines. As Washington Democrats embark on their attempt to sell government-run health care, they are in for a rude awakening. A few ...
ObamaCare Already Jacking Up Health-Insurance Costs For Businesses -- So They're Cutting Benefits Post Date: 2010-03-26 09:41:53 by dont eat that

Remember the part in the ObamaCare pitch when they said if you like your current healthcare, it won't change? Turns out it might. Companies are already announcing that their healthcare premium costs are going through the roof. Some are responding by firing people. Some are cutting benefits. And some are presumably eating it. But costs they are a-rising. A few examples from the WSJ: * Caterpillar said it would cost the company at least $100 million more in the first year alone. * Medical device maker Medtronic warned that new taxes on its products could force it to lay off a thousand workers. * Verizon announced to employees that it will likely have to cut healthcare benefits to ...

The details of President Barack Obama's health-care plan are finally starting to come out. They are ugly. I want to socialize medicine, but America desperately needs smart, strong opposition to Obamacare. The worst part is the "mandate," requiring the uninsured to buy insurance at hyper-inflated prices. We can't count on so-called liberals to fight. We need a passel of old-fashioned conservatives to come to our rescue. What we've got instead are fools like David Rivkin. Rivkin, a right-wing lawyer who worked in the Reagan-Bush Justice Department, recently fired the first salvo against Obama's health-care mandate in The Wall Street Journal. Requiring Americans ...

In the final days before the climactic ObamaCare vote in Congress, one hotly disputed issue was the reliability of the Congressional Budget Offices projection that the health plan would cost only $940 billion over 10 years. Critics charged that this figure was artificially low because it included a projected 21% cut in Medicare payments to physicians that Congress would later restore as a separate $247 billion doc fix. In essence, ObamaCare critics charged that supporters were engaged in fraudulent accounting. The critics are right. In the short term, politicians are unlikely to leave the draconian 21% Medicare cuts in place, because it would force many ...
Investors Avoid U.S. Bonds, Sensing Pricey Obamacare Disaster Post Date: 2010-03-26 08:56:23 by dont eat that

Bond investors have avoided two major Treasury Department auctions this week, prompting economists to say there is a looming sense of financial disaster in the wake of President Barack Obamas landmark and expensive healthcare overhaul. If demand for U.S. debt continues to weaken, experts say the government would be forced to pay higher interest rates to lure investors. Prospects that the $940 billion healthcare plan could add to the massive U.S. deficit would make the nations debt less attractive to investors because of an increase in supply and less fiscal stability. Most auctions so far in 2010 have attracted strong demand. Experts say a few lukewarm auctions ...

In a recent Op-Ed piece in the New York Times, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, the director of the CBO from 2003 to 2005, now president of the American Action Forum and obviously someone in the know, doesnt buy it either. I quote:
the budget office is required to take written legislation at face value and not second-guess the plausibility of what it is handed. So fantasy in, fantasy out. In reality, if you strip out all the gimmicks and budgetary games and rework the calculus, a wholly different picture emerges: The health care reform legislation would raise, not lower, federal deficits, by $562 billion

(ChattahBox)A $14 million sexual abuse lawsuit filed in Portland, Ore. is making headlines, due to the disturbing contents of confidential files from the Boy Scouts of America, which show that the organization knew of at least 1,000 pedophiles within the Scouts from 1965 to 1985, but hushed it up. Despite numerous sexual abuse lawsuits brought by victims against the Boy Scouts over the years, the confidential files were never obtained by plaintiffs attorneys, with most of the cases settled quietly out of court. Even more disturbing, the scoutmaster-pedophile, who molested the victim in the current lawsuit, confessed to Boy Scout leaders that he molested 17 Boy Scouts, but ...
