Obama to Wall Street: ‘Join Us, Instead of Fighting Us’ [Full Thread]

By PETER BAKER President Obama challenged some of the nation’s most influential bankers on Thursday to call off their “battalions of financial industry lobbyists” and embrace a new regulatory structure meant to avert another economic crisis. Speaking in the bankers’ backyard, at the Cooper Union in Manhattan, Mr. Obama castigated a “failure of responsibility” by Wall Street for having led to the financial crisis of 2008, and he pressed his case for what he called “a common-sense, reasonable, non-ideological” system of tighter regulation to prevent any recurrence. He took issue with the claim that his proposal would institutionalize the idea of ...

Bernanke: This is the Obama Depression. You are screwed. Get used to it.

Just as you can't be a motivational speaker with a constant frown, you can't be the Fed President without being a 'glass half full' kind of guy. Ben Bernanke fits the bill well. In 2005, Mr. Bernanke said that a housing bubble was a 'pretty unlikely possibility.' His judgment echoed Mr. Greenspan's assessment given in 2004 that the rise in home values was 'not enough in our judgment to raise major concerns.' Even in 2007, Bernanke went on record to state that the Fed 'does not expect significant spillovers from the subprime market to the rest of the economy.' I am not sure what Mr. Bernanke considers a significant spill, but what we got is more ...

Obama Youth Meets His Messiah -- Then Robs Electronics Store

Three weeks after he and dozens of others, including top-ranking Obama administration officials, spoke in the nation's capital about building a brighter future for Americans, 20-year-old Demarco Scott robbed an electronics store at gunpoint, according to local police and officials. Scott, a Washington, D.C., resident, expressed regret to his victims as he robbed them, documents filed by police in federal court said. The month before, he had been a "student presenter" during a conference aimed at tackling issues such as job creation and economic stability, transportation and infrastructure, and housing stabilization in cities and towns across the country. Scott was asked ...

America Gives the Kenyan White House Resident a Thumbs Down on Israel

Only a third of Americans approve of the way President Obama's handling the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, according to a new national poll. A Quinnipiac University survey released Thursday morning indicates that 35 percent of the public gives the president a thumbs up on how he's dealing with the situation between Israel and the Palestinians, with 44 percent saying they disapprove, and just over one in five unsure. This stands in contrast with how Americans feel about Obama's overall handling of foreign policy, with 48 percent approving and 42 percent saying they disapprove. According to the poll, two-thirds of Jewish voters disapprove of how the ...

American Public: "Man Made Global Warming is Bullshit"

Fifty-nine percent (59%) of Americans now believe there is a significant disagreement within the scientific community over global warming, up seven points from early December just after the so-called “Climategate” scandal involving doctored or deliberately undisclosed scientific evidence first broke. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that a quarter of adults (25%) think scientists do agree on global warming, showing no change from the earlier survey. Fifteen percent (15%) are not sure. Just 16% say stopping global warming to save the environment is a bigger priority for our national leaders than stimulating the economy to create jobs. A sizable majority ...

Obama Blames Insurance Companies for Volcano Eruption

In a clear effort not to have his agenda upstaged by a natural disaster, President Obama held an impromptu press conference this afternoon blaming insurance companies for the eruption in Iceland. ”If you ever wondered how low greedy insurance companies would stoop to make a buck,” Obama bellowed to a mesmerized crowd, “just look at the plume of ash behind me.” As Obama spoke, a live picture of the eruption appeared on a giant screen behind his podium. ”We have got to stop these greedy companies in their tracks, or God only knows what they will do to us next!” he exclaimed. “If you think this eruption was bad, wait until you see the tidal waves and asteroid ...

Obama and Biden to Celebrate Earth Day by Tying Up New York Air Traffic

On a day when many Americans will be reflecting upon how they can reduce their impact on the environment, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will board separate jets in Washington on Earth Day morning to fly 250 miles up the east coast to New York, where they will land at separate airports to attend separate events within a few miles of each other. The parallel visits of Air Force One (a 747/VC-25 aircraft) and Air Force Two (a 757/C-32A aircraft) will delay dozens, if not hundreds of commercial flights at Kennedy and LaGuardia and other nearby airports as no-fly zones are implemented. Jets will be forced to circle and burn more fuel as they wait for the VIPs to come and ...

(April 21) -- In 1823, a government surveyor named Stephen Long was working to map out the Great Plains, an expanse of land acquired along with the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. He was unimpressed by what he saw. As his geographer wrote in the report that accompanied the expedition: I do not hesitate in giving the opinion that it is almost wholly unfit for cultivation, and of course, uninhabitable by a people depending upon agriculture for their subsistence. Long would have been shocked to see what the region looks like today -- not merely fit for cultivation, but in fact one of the most fertile and productive areas of the world. Since World War II, dramatic leaps in technology have allowed ...

Internal RNC probe finds financial controls in disarray

Barely 6 1/2 months before the midterm elections, an internal investigation by the Republican National Committee has revealed that the organization is beset with questionable financial management and oversight and is spending more money courting top-dollar donors than it raises. The investigation found that the Republican Party's national governing body is losing money on its major-donors' fundraising program -- spending $1.09 for each $1.00 raised, according to RNC members privy to the investigation's findings. It typically costs about 40 cents for every dollar raised from donors who give more than $1,000. The investigation also found that the RNC has allowed employees to ...

NEW YORK (AP) - As Congress debates sweeping legislation aimed at guarding against another financial meltdown, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has become Wall Street's spokesman and defender amid a chorus of populist voices. With President Barack Obama set to visit New York to push for passing financial reform, the billionaire mayor, who got his start on Wall Street in the 1960s and is considered a national expert on financial matters, argues that too much regulation could endanger the economy as much as others say it would protect it. "The bashing of Wall Street is something that should worry everybody," Bloomberg declared last week. The Republican-turned-independent mayor's ...

President Barack Obama's job approval, which bounced slightly to a 45 - 46 percent split March 25 in the wake of his health care victory, has flattened out at 44 - 46 percent, his lowest approval rating since his inauguration, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. A total of 53 percent of American voters are "very confident" or "somewhat confident" President Obama will make the right decision in nominating a U.S. Supreme Court justice, while 46 percent are "not too confident" or "not confident at all," the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN- uh-pe-ack) University survey finds. Voters trust the President rather than Senate ...

RNC blew $340,000 on posh three-day Hawaii bash — $56,000 a day The Republican National Committee spent more than $340,000 at a lavish party meeting in Hawaii, according to recently filed campaign finance reports. The news comes on the heels of a report last month which revealed that the Party had reimbursed a staffer $2,000 for an event at a risque bondage-themed Beverly Hills nightclub. Federal Election Commission reports, noted in the DC-insider website Hotline, show that the party spent a whopping $167,000 for "facilities" during their three day stay. That comes to $56,000 per day, more than the average American makes in a year. RNC officials spent another $90,000 ...

In my opinion, there is reasonable cause to demand that Obama take urine test (pee test) for cocaine. * He admits in his own writings that he used cocaine while in high school and college. * He helped his mentor Frank Marshal Davis sell cocaine off of Davis's hot dog stand in Waikiki. * He had two night affair with Larry Sinclair during which Sinclair snorted cocaine and Obama smoked crack. Obama obtained the cocaine for them. * He exhibits periods of confused hyperactivity typical of the effects of cocaine, like his recent 17 minute 2500 word inchoate answer to a woman's simple question. * He recently shed his press corps and secret service detail to take a 30 minute excursion ...

Crist To Run For Florida Senate As An Independent?

It may be the worst-kept secret in American politics today, and it’s apparently about to become a reality. Reliable sources informed me today that embattled Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, whose early lead in his US Senate Republican primary race against former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio has essentially reversed itself in the polls, is preparing to announce sooner rather than later that he will leave the GOP and continue his run for Senate as an independent. Sources add that the speech Crist will use in his announcement is now being drafted. Of course Crist is known from time to time for running political misdirections that surprise even political experts at the last minute. But ...

Hey dumbasses who think GM has repaid its loans -- US and Canadian Governments still own 73% of the company

GM still owes $45.3 billion to the U.S. and $8.1 billion to Canada, money it received in exchange for large stakes in the company. The unfortunate reality is that the U.S. government still owns 61 percent of the company and Canada owns roughly 12 percent. The company may appear to be doing well, but with so much taxpayer money funding the company, can any financial analyst really know for sure?

Campaign contributions from Goldman Sachs employees to President Obama are nearly seven times as much as President Bush received from Enron workers, according to numbers on OpenSecrets.org. President Bush's connections to Enron were well-hyped during the company's accounting debacle that rippled through the economy. Time magazine even had an article called, "Bush's Enron Problem." The Associated Press ran with the headline, "Bush-backing Enron makes big money off crisis." David Callaway wrote that Enron for Bush was worse than Whitewater for Clinton... Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, once a rising Republican star with credible ambitions of national office, sits on the brink of political oblivion. His now-infamous embrace of President Obama (and his economic stimulus plan) last November – made him ripe for a challenge from the right in his bid for Florida’s open US Senate seat. In just a few months, Governor Crist has gone from a towering lead over Mr. Rubio in the primary to being 20 points down. It seems that anyone that associates with Obama turns into garbage.

Obama's jobless crisis: The administration created the worst labor market since the Depression

Forty-four percent of America's unemployed have been jobless for more than six months. That's the highest rate since the Great Depression. The previous high was 26 percent in June 1983. No matter what the White House says, an economic recovery has not arrived. On Friday, President Obama signed a new law to maintain unemployment insurance benefits for the chronically unemployed for up to 95 or 99 weeks. Eligibility for 99 weeks applies when a state's unemployment rate is more than 8.5 percent. That's almost two whole years, which represents a huge increase compared to the maximum 26 weeks that were available as recently as June 2008. For perspective, between 1954 and 2007, ...

DENVER – A watchdog group objected Tuesday to an evangelist's invitation to speak at the Pentagon next month, saying his past description of Islam as "evil" offended Muslims who work for the Department of Defense and the appearance should be canceled. Mikey Weinstein, president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, said inviting evangelist Franklin Graham to speak May 6, the National Day of Prayer, "would be like bringing someone in on national prayer day madly denigrating Christianity" or other religious groups. It would also endanger American troops by stirring up Muslim extremists, Weinstein said. Graham is the son of famed evangelist Billy Graham ...

Goldi Explains the Tax Code and Why You Don't Owe Taxes (Now she tells us)

The TAX CODE is in compliance with the Constitution. It's the IRS that isn't. The Tax Code is divided into two sections: The First section is for Income derived from Interest, Dividends, rentals, and property income. Anything your money and investments earn IS A TAXABLE INCOME...and INCOME TAX must be paid on it. --- The Second section is for WAGES. If you read it carefully, ONLY those with Green cards, Foreign Workers with permits, and Americans living overseas have to pay anything in to the Govt. The rest of the citizenry owes nothing. ---- The IRS has turned this on its head, and lumps WAGES into the first section...and that just doesn't exist. THAT is why they say ...

Obama Caught Being an Effin Liar Over Jobs

The number of jobs in the U.S. is currently 129.7 million. So to justify the Administration’s current claim of 2.8 million jobs “created or saved” by stimulus, they need to also claim that without that stimulus there would be only 126.9 million jobs. That’s exactly what they do, displayed as the “baseline projection” level in the graphic below from an April 14, 2010 report: An inconvenient truth, at least for the Obama Administration, is that once upon a time, in their January 2009 Romer/Bernstein Report they told America that without their stimulus there would be 133.9 million jobs. That’s right, in order to make it look like their stimulus has ...

We have now reached the apex of “heads I win, tails you lose” global warming-alarmism. In his April 18 op-ed for the LA Times, author Eli Kintisch warned that “the world is running short on air pollution, and if we continue to cut back on smoke pouring forth from industrial smokestacks,” global warming consequences could be “profound.” Having painted themselves into an environmental conundrum, Kintisch and climate scientists are left debating how they are going to proceed with sulfate aerosols – a natural and anthropogenic air pollutant believed to have cooling properties on the earth’s atmosphere. “Thanks to cooling by aerosols starting in the ...

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will attend a memorial service for the miners in Beckley, W.Va. The April 5 blast at the Upper Big Branch mine was the nation's worst coal mine disaster since 1970. Obama has ordered a sweeping review of mine safety records and called for stronger mining laws.
