After reporter's subpoena, critics call Obama's leak-plugging efforts Bush-like Post Date: 2010-04-30 17:11:07 by WhiteSands

The Justice Department's decision to subpoena a New York Times reporter this week has convinced some press advocates that President Obama's team is pursuing leaks with the same fervor as the Bush administration. James Risen, who shared a Pulitzer Prize for disclosing President George W. Bush's domestic surveillance program, has refused to testify about the confidential sources he used for his 2006 book "State of War: The Secret History of the C.I.A. and the Bush Administration." "The message they are sending to everyone is, 'You leak to the media, we will get you,' " said Lucy Dalglish, executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of ...
Oil slick poses political peril for Obama Post Date: 2010-04-30 17:03:29 by WhiteSands

The rapidly expanding environmental catastrophe caused by the oil spill off the coast of Louisiana is presenting a growing political challenge to the Obama White House, with Mr. Obama and his aides at pains to defend the response and forestall comparisons to the Hurricane Katrina crisis. Nine days after British Petroleum's Deepwater Horizon oil rig blew apart and began spewing 5,000 barrels of oil a day into the Gulf of Mexico, a massive oil slick is set to wash ashore on the southern coast Thursday evening and, experts say, could dwarf the damage caused by the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. Failure to get control of the relief effort and contain the environmental challenge could ...
Gibbs: Oil Spill Is Not Our Katrina Post Date: 2010-04-30 17:01:41 by WhiteSands

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs dismisses criticism that the oil spill off the Gulf Coast is President Obamas Hurricane Katrina, noting, More than 1,800 people died in Katrina. The notion that somehow were playing catch-up is badly misinformed, Gibbs added. He repeated what other administration sources have said about the administrations drilling policy: That no oil leases for new exploration areas in the Atlantic will be issued until the Gulf spill is reviewed. Weve got a review process that will determine how we go forward, Gibbs said of both the Gulf spill and future licenses for Atlantic drilling.

A federal jury this afternoon convicted Sarah Palin e-mail intruder David C. Kernell of felony destruction of records to hamper a federal investigation and misdemeanor unlawfully obtaining information from a protected computer. The jury acquitted Kernell, 22, of felony wire fraud. U.S. District Judge Thomas W. Phillips declared a mistrial on the fourth charge, felony identity theft, after the jurors said they were hopelessly deadlocked. The records charge carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence, while the misdemeanor maximum sentence is one year. Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Weddle said federal prosecutors would decide next week if they would retry the former University of Tennessee ...
INCOMPETENT Obama administration messing up response to Oil spill Post Date: 2010-04-30 16:15:56 by no gnu taxes

The rapidly expanding environmental catastrophe caused by the oil spill off the coast of Louisiana is presenting a growing political challenge to the Obama White House, with Mr. Obama and his aides at pains to defend the response and forestall comparisons to the Hurricane Katrina crisis. Failure to get control of the relief effort and contain the environmental challenge could pose the same kind of political threat to Mr. Obama's popular standing that the much-criticized handling of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina did for former President George W. Bush. And unlike Katrina, it is likely the federal government will be the clear lead authority in dealing with the BP spill.

LP Members, STOP focusing on less important issues (Satire..or not?) Post Date: 2010-04-30 13:41:49 by no gnu taxes

I'm never sure whether to take this guy seriously or not: -- I would like to state that I believe that the members of LP are wasting their time talking about illegal immigration. While it is a problem, it is not the most pressing issue this country is facing. In my most humble opinion, the most pressing issue we are facing are Iran, Israel and the stagnation of the War on Terror, in that order. The DEMONrats are trying to take our focus away from their purposeful ineptitude in handling both of these issues. They want to weaken this country to give the MuSLIME hoard an easier opportunity to infiltrate our country and proselytize their devil-based moon religion. The ...
Gulf Coast Oil Spill Could Eclipse Exxon Valdez Post Date: 2010-04-30 11:18:48 by Brian S

VENICE, La. An oil spill that threatened to eclipse even the Exxon Valdez disaster spread out of control with a faint sheen washing ashore along the Gulf Coast Thursday night as fishermen rushed to scoop up shrimp and crews spread floating barriers around marshes. The spill was bigger than imagined five times more than first estimated and closer. Faint fingers of oily sheen were reaching the Mississippi River delta, lapping the Louisiana shoreline in long, thin lines. "It is of grave concern," David Kennedy of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told The Associated Press. "I am frightened. This is a very, very big thing. And the efforts ...
'Gag-Inducing' Fuel Smell Wafting Over New Orleans Area Post Date: 2010-04-30 11:02:57 by Brian S

And so it begins. Forecasters had predicted that the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico five times worse than originally thought wouldn't reach the Louisiana coast until Friday. But 20 mph winds have pushed the petroleum slick inland much faster than anticipated and, though CNN reports that as of Thursday afternoon the oil mass is still "three of four miles" from the mouth of the Mississippi River, residents of New Orleans are already under an olfactory assault that may be caused by the spill. The Times-Picayune reports that the city has been overwhelmed by a "pungent smell" and that, though they can't confirm the odor's source, officials ...

WASHINGTON - The U.S. economy grew at a slightly slower-than-expected pace in the first quarter, held back by inventories and exports, but resurgent consumer spending offered evidence of a sustainable recovery, a government report showed on Friday. Gross domestic product expanded at a 3.2 percent pace, the Commerce Department said in its first estimate -- marking three straight quarters of growth as the economy climbs out of the worst recession since the 1930s. Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast GDP, which measures total goods and services output within U.S. borders, growing at a 3.4 percent rate in the first three months of 2010 after a 5.6 percent growth pace in the fourth quarter. ...

In 2003, President Bush signed into law a large tax cut for all net taxpayers. Net taxpayers are those whose final tax payment, exceeds any form of offset or reduction. Net taxpayers must be distinguished from those who could be classified as net tax receivers. Net tax receivers, get credits and other transfers from net taxpayers turned over to them, in the form of cashthousands of dollars of cash, to millions of recipients. The 2003 tax cuts went 100% to net taxpayers. The Obama portion of his-misnamed-tax cuts, went/go almost 100% to net tax recipients. Millions of individuals, classified as taxpayers, file a tax ...

I dont want to hear how much you love or hate Barack Obama. Hes the President and thats that. The reason Im asking this question is because Im graduating from college in four weeks. Had this been ten years ago, I would be more optimistic and less skeptical. Im hoping I dont end up with another menial job making minimum wage and that Ill have to live reclusively somewhere in the hinterland because I cant afford to live anywhere. In fact, Im applying for grad school for some of these very reasons. How soon do you think the economy will recover?

More Bailouts, More Regulations, More Government: Obama’s Chump Change Post Date: 2010-04-30 08:14:06 by no gnu taxes

Obamas economic team seems to confirm at first glance that all his talk of change really means more of the same more bailouts, more government intervention, more addressing symptoms rather than causes along with greater deficits, and massive increases in government spending, which our illustrious leaders in Washington superstitiously believe can restore us to economic health. As with all superstitions, no logical argument or historical evidence can shake it away. Besides, it gives them reason to spend, which they love to do anyway. There is nothing our masters in Washington: Obama, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, or Barnanke at the Fed can ...

WASHINGTON -- Racheting pressure on Goldman Sachs two days after its executives were grilled and rebuked in the public glare, the Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation of the Wall Street powerhouse over mortgage securities deals it arranged. The new criminal inquiry follows civil fraud charges filed by the government against Goldman two weeks ago and as Congress pushes toward enacting sweeping legislation aimed at preventing another near-meltdown of the financial system. The investigation by the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan stems from a criminal referral by the Securities and Exchange Commission, a knowledgeable person said Thursday. The person spoke on ...
Obama Tax Returns: Low On Story Lines And Charity Donations Post Date: 2010-04-29 19:21:09 by WhiteSands

Sen. Barack Obama released seven years of prior tax return documents on Tuesday. And a review of the records reveals several newsworthy, albeit minor, disclosures. Up until recent years when their income increased sharply from book revenues and a Senate salary, Obama's family donated a relatively minor amount of its earnings to charity. From 2000 through 2004, the senator and his wife never gave more than $3,500 a year in charitable donations -- about 1 percent of their annual earnings. In 2005, however, that total jumped to $77,315 (4.7 percent of annual earnings), and to $60,307 in 2006 (6.1 percent). The money went to several organizations. More than $27,000 total was given to ...

A federal official said this afternoon that the leading edge of the Gulf oil slick could reach the Mississippi River delta sometime tonight, and an executive said BP has asked the Department of Defense for technical help. In Washington, lawmakers raised the heat on the offshore energy industry, although the Obama administration stopped short today of backing off its commitment to expanded drilling. The White House dispatched top officials from the Homeland Security Department, Environmental Protection Agency and Interior Department to the Gulf Coast, and President Barack Obama today called the five Gulf Coast state governors to emphasize the federal government's support and concern ...

April 29 (Bloomberg) -- AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka led thousands of labor-union protesters in a march on Wall Street, chanting that investment banks must fix the mess that you made by paying more taxes and lending more money. Its time for special taxes for bank bonuses, Trumka said today at a rally outside City Hall that began after floor trading ended at the New York Stock Exchange. When you engage in rampant and risky speculation, you are going to pay your fair share in taxes. The rally caps a drive by the nations largest organization of labor unions called the Make Wall Street Pay campaign. Protestors, some dressed as ...

Easy for him to say when his income last year looked like this: In a stump speech in Quincy, Illinois, President Obama suggested that I do think at a certain point youve made enough money. Video here. Obama made almost $5.5 million last year, most of which came from book royalties according to his tax return. This comes on top of the other millions of dollars Obama received in previous years. The fact that Obama has been in the public spotlight as a politician has undoubtedly had an impact on the royalties of his two books as well. Go ahead and compare Obamas 2009 ...

The Popes chosen replacement to investigate sex abuse cases in the Catholic Church has been accused of failing to take action against a Californian priest after learning that he had allegedly molested an altar boy 11 years earlier. Cardinal William Levada, who at the time the alleged offence came to light in 1995 was Archbishop of San Francisco, said in testimony five years ago that he had not contacted police about Father Milton Walsh because he believed that his predecessor had dealt with the case adequately. He also said he had trusted that Father Walsh would not reoffend. Jeffrey Lena, the lawyer acting for the Vatican in US abuse cases, said that Cardinal Levada acted ...

Louisiana Gov. Jindal Issues Emergency Declaration On Oil Leak In Gulf of Mexico Post Date: 2010-04-29 14:01:42 by Brian S

April 29, 2010, 12:25PM Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal this morning issued a declaration of emergency stemming from the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. Jindal's news release said the state Homeland Security and Emergency Assistance and Disaster Act empowers the governor to make such a declaration. The declaration, largely a procedural act, is necessary to allow federal agencies and federal resources to be deployed if necessary, the news release said. The oil is leaking from a damaged pipe at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico some 50 miles southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The pipe was damaged in the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig last week. A cause of the ...
Leaking Oil Well Lacked Safeguard Device Post Date: 2010-04-29 13:57:09 by Brian S

The oil well spewing crude into the Gulf of Mexico didn't have a remote-control shut-off switch used in two other major oil-producing nations as last-resort protection against underwater spills. The lack of the device, called an acoustic switch, could amplify concerns over the environmental impact of offshore drilling after the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon rig last week. The accident has led to one of the largest ever oil spills in U.S. water and the loss of 11 lives. On Wednesday federal investigators said the disaster is now releasing 5,000 barrels of oil a day into the Gulf, up from original estimates of 1,000 barrels a day. U.S. regulators don't mandate use ...

Remember when the radical left wing, including our President, as well as the squishy, gutless Republican moderates lost their minds when Sarah Palin said she wasnt all that happy to know that her special needs son and aging parents would have to stand before Obamas death panels and be evaluated before they received care? Yeah, me too. There was a herculean effort to demonize Sarah Palin and to cover up the fact that there are indeed death panels to be set up to run ObamaCare. By the way
RomneyCare, the blueprint for ObamaCare, also has the same death panels and the health care rationing is already in progress. And ...

Only a slight majority, 51 percent, of Democrats think the stimulus helped create jobs, 42 percent said it has not. Seventy-nine percent of self-identified Republicans said the stimulus didnt aide job growth while 18 percent think it did. The survey also showed that voters are mixed on whether the Troubled Asset Relief Program was effective in staving off a deeper financial crisis. ...
