Sgt. Jeffrey Cotton was on trial for aggravated assault by a public servant for shooting Robbie Tolan in front of his Bellaire home on New Years Eve 2008. Cotton was attempting to arrest Tolan for driving what he believed to be a stolen car. The car belonged to Tolan, but another officer mistakenly typed in the wrong license plate number. Tolan testified he was on one knee arguing with Cotton for pushing his mother when he ...

(05-12) 14:52 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) -- Bad wiring and a leak in what's supposed to be a "blowout preventer." Sealing problems that may have allowed a methane eruption. Even a dead battery, of all things. New disclosures Wednesday revealed a complex cascade of deep-sea equipment failures and procedural problems in the oil rig explosion and massive spill that is still fouling the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and threatening industries and wildlife near the coast and on shore. The public also got its first look on Wednesday of oil gushing from the broken pipe that rests nearly a mile under water as BP PLC, the well's operator, released a video taken by a remotely controlled ...

AP Sources: US To Join Advisory Group Despite Concern Over Possible Anti-Israel Bias Post Date: 2010-05-12 21:23:17 by Brian S

WASHINGTON (AP) The Obama administration is preparing to join an international advisory group that the U.S. has largely shunned due to fears it would adopt anti-Israeli and anti-Western stances, U.S. officials said Wednesday. The officials told The Associated Press the administration plans to announce as early as this week that it will begin a formal relationship with the Alliance of Civilizations. The five-year-old, U.N.-backed organization aims to ease strains between societies and cultures, particularly the West and Islam. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the decision publicly. The Bush administration boycotted the group ...
Video Shows Oil Flowing Like Steam From A Geyser Post Date: 2010-05-12 21:21:03 by Brian S

(05-12) 14:30 PDT Robert, La. (AP) -- Video released by BP shows oil spewing from a yellowish, broken pipe 5,000 feet below the surface. The oil looks like steam rushing from a geyser. The video released Wednesday gives a not-yet-seen glimpse of the leaking well a mile underwater. The stream occasionally can be seen becoming lighter as natural gas mixes into the gusher. Natural gas has been flowing from the well since the beginning. BP's Doug Suttles says the rate natural gas has been flowing out hasn't changed in the 21 days since the Deepwater Horizon exploded in the Gulf of Mexico.

ATLANTA The eldest grandson of former President Jimmy Carter has won a suburban Atlanta state Senate seat in a special election Tuesday night. Jason Carter became the first in his family to win elected office since his grandfather took the White House more than three decades ago. Unofficial results showed Carter claiming 65 percent of the vote to fellow Democrat Tom Stubbs' 23 percent. The 34-year-old Carter celebrated at a restaurant Tuesday night with his grandparents and other family members. During the race, Carter focused more on the issues than on his famous grandfather. His website made scant mention of the former president, instead focusing on the younger Carter's ...

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Sean Penn pleaded no contest to vandalism on Wednesday, effectively ending a case in which the Oscar-winning actor was videotaped kicking a celebrity photographer. Penn was not present in court and entered the plea through his attorney. He was sentenced to three years of informal probation and ordered to perform 300 hours of community service, said city attorney's spokesman Frank Mateljan. Mateljan says those hours can be completed through Penn's earthquake-relief efforts in Haiti. He was also ordered to undergo 36 hours of anger management counseling. Penn was charged in February with misdemeanor battery and vandalism for the October dustup. "Prolonging ...
Probe: Leak Likely Played Role in Gulf Oil Blast, Blowout Preventer Had Hydraulic Problems before Explosion Post Date: 2010-05-12 12:53:33 by Brian S

(CBS/AP) A key safety device known as the blowout preventer used in the BP oil rig in the Gulf had a hydraulic leak and other problems that likely prevented it from working as designed, congressional investigators said Wednesday. They also said BP PLC and other documents also indicated confusion over whether poor pipe integrity was allowing methane gas to leak into the well just hours before the explosion that killed 11 workers and blew the well open. Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., said that BP had informed his House committee that at some point when the well was being closed with cement an influx of methane entered the wellhead, indicating that cementing the well had not produced needed ...

ATLANTA (CBS/AP) The molestation trial of Tonya Craft that was marked by heartbreaking testimony from her three young accusers, and even her own daughter, has ended in a not guilty verdict on all 22 charges, including charges of child molestation, aggravated sexual battery and aggravated child molestation. As the Catoosa County Superior Court jury announced their verdict Craft wept and supporters cheered loudly outside the courtroom. "The amazing ordeal with the corruption that caught up these little girls and this wonderful woman has begun to end with a verdict from 12 people honest and true," Demosthenes Lorandos, Craft's attorney said. But Craft was more circumspect ...

[Update: She's been acquitted.] Raise your hand if youve never heard of Tonya Craft. I hadnt either, until I stumbled across this post at change.org. Tonya Craft is the latest lightning rod in that modern day witch-hunt: the sex offender. But, from all accounts, this isnt a normal case. This is a shining example of the lengths people will go to, in order to brand someone a villain. The word sham is inadequate to describe the sheer rape of the law that is currently underway in Northwest Georgia at Crafts trial. Theres little doubt that a guilty verdict will fail on appeal. Yet Arnt and his fellow prosecutor Len Gregor seem intent on achieving one anyway, ...
Time to bring Geithner and Obama up on criminal charges? Post Date: 2010-05-12 10:23:35 by no gnu taxes

We now know Geithner is still attached to Goldman Sachs at the hip and he did use his Federal Reserve powers to make sure Goldman Sachs got government funds thanks to Obama. Also Geithner made sure that Goldman Sachs competition did not get any government funds which to me is a clear case of misuse of federal funds and tax payer money. Especially when you add in that Goldman Sachs made 2 billion dollars profit this July during our recession. The sad part is that Obama appointed Geithner and signs everything that Geithner puts in front of him. Now Obama is calling for more economic reform from this corrupt network. Time to start the investigations if you ask me! Want proof from Geithner ...

ALBUQUERQUE As the Arizona Legislature steamed ahead with the most stringent immigration enforcement bill in the country this year, this states House of Representatives was unanimously passing a resolution recognizing the economic benefits of illegal immigrants. While the Arizona police will check drivers licenses and other documents to root out illegal immigrants, New Mexico allows illegal residents to obtain drivers licenses as a public safety measure. And if Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona, a Republican, has become, for now, the public face of tough immigration enforcement, Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, a Democrat, has told any interviewer who will listen ...
Phoenix Counts Big Boycott Cost Post Date: 2010-05-12 07:57:51 by war

Boycotts threatened or carried out over Arizonas new immigration enforcement law could cost the Phoenix metropolitan area $90 million in hotel and convention business over five years, Mayor Phil Gordon said Tuesday. The figure, which does not include incidental spending in restaurants and shops, was calculated after four organizations canceled conventions or conferences and a dozen others said they would abandon visits if the law was not repealed, he said. The fallout comes as the state, heavily dependent on tourism, struggles to right its economy. I dont think there ever would be a good time not to have $90 million, said Mr. Gordon, a Democrat who opposes both the ...
Drifting satellite threatens US cable programming Post Date: 2010-05-12 07:55:42 by war

LONDON (AP) - A TV communications satellite is drifting out of control thousands of miles above the Earth, threatening to wander into another satellite's orbit and interfere with cable programming across the United States, the satellites' owners said Tuesday. Communications company Intelsat said it lost control of the Galaxy 15 satellite on April 8, possibly because the satellite's systems were knocked out by a solar storm. Intelsat cannot remotely steer the satellite to remain in its orbit, so Galaxy 15 is creeping toward the adjacent path of another TV communications satellite that serves U.S. cable companies. Galaxy 15 continues to receive and transmit satellite signals, and ...

Obama’s Supreme Pick Kagan Is A Bankster Operative Post Date: 2010-05-12 00:44:13 by A K A Stone

Democrats are going gaa-gaa over Obamas Supreme pick Elena Kagan. Democrats praised Kagan as razor sharp and impeccably qualified for the lifetime appointment on the nine-member bench, but Republicans promised to vigorously vet a surprising choice, noting she had never been a judge, reports Agence France-Presse. I have selected a nominee who I believe embodies
excellence, independence, integrity and passion for the law, and who can ultimately provide that same kind of leadership on the court, Obama said at the White House. Is Kagan independent? Hardly. She is a bankster operative. Kagan sat on a Goldman Sachs advisory council ...

Even Reagan Wasnt a Reagan Republican NEWSWEEK's apostasy guide: why every recent GOP president wasn't conservative enough for today's party. In the year and a half since Barack Obama was elected president, Republicans nationwide seem to have given up on the whole governing thing and chosen instead to play a long, rancorous game of "I'm More Conservative Than You Are." They've been playing it in Utah, where incumbent Sen. Bob Bennettlifetime American Conservative Union rating: 84lost a primary battle this past weekend. They've been playing it in Florida, where moderate Gov. Charlie Crist was forced last week to abandon his bid for the ...

Crews collapsed the chimney of a two-story bungalow in northwest Detroit in a ceremonial start to the $4.5 million project backed by Wayne County and faith-based groups. It's the latest step in an aggressive effort to rid the city of thousands of vacant homes. "It's part of the rebirth we are going through," County Executive Robert Ficano said, surrounded by other local officials and a dozen religious leaders. ...

Mrs. Obama took on childhood obesity as her signature issue and when the president put together an interagency panel in February to study the issue, he chose her to lead the campaign. "We don't need new discoveries or new inventions to reverse this trend," Mrs. Obama said at a briefing on the White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity Report to the President. "Again, we have the tools at our disposal to reverse it. All we need is the motivation, the opportunity and the willpower to do what needs to be done." The U.S. Centers for Disease ...

White Cop Shot Himself And Blamed It On A Black Man Post Date: 2010-05-11 17:25:47 by Brian S

PHILADELPHIA A white city police sergeant made up a story about being shot by a black man while on patrol last month and actually intentionally shot himself for unknown reasons, the citys police commissioner said Tuesday. Sgt. Robert Ralston, 46, confessed to making up the story and will have to pay the costs of the massive manhunt that followed, Commissioner Charles Ramsey said. Ralston has been suspended with intent to dismiss, but will not face criminal charges because granting immunity was the only way to obtain his confession, Ramsey said at a news conference. The case was especially troubling, Ramsey said, because Ralston identified his supposed attacker as black. When ...

MIAMI Workers aboard an exploding offshore drilling platform were told to sign statements denying they were hurt or witnessed the blast that rocked the rig, killed 11 and spewed millions of gallons of oil into the ocean, their attorneys said Tuesday. Survivors floated for hours in life boats in the Gulf of Mexico following the disaster on the Deepwater Horizon, and were greeted by company officials onshore asking them to sign statements that they had no "first hand or personal knowledge" of the incident, attorneys said. "These men are told they have to sign these statements or they cant go home," said Tony Buzbee, a Houston-based attorney for 10 Transocean ...
