Arizonans Say Yes To Sales Tax Increase, No To Tea Party Post Date: 2010-05-19 12:17:21 by Brian S

By a 2 to 1 margin, Arizona voters approved a one cent increase in the state sales tax to save the states education, public safety, and human and health services systems. Two-thirds of the anticipated $900 million to be raised by the tax will go to primary and secondary education. The sales tax was approved by voters in every county in the state. The vote in favor of the tax increase by such a wide margin suggests Arizonans are not buying the anti-government and anti-tax extremism of Tea Party and allied Republican political leaders. Besides the states education system, Governor Jan Brewer was a big winner with the tax approval. Brewer, who bucked her own partys ...

The Los Angeles City Council voted to boycott the state of Arizona over its new immigration-enforcement law, and now the Arizona Corporation Commission has responded. Gary Pierce, one of the commissioners chosen in state-wide elections to the utility regulation panel, notes that Los Angeles gets about 25% of its power from Arizona producers. If the City of Angels really wants a boycott, Pierce offers his services to help, as he explains in a letter to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and copied to Hot Air: Dear Mayor Villaraigosa, I was dismayed to learn that the Los Angeles City Council voted to boycott Arizona and Arizona-based companies a vote you strongly supported to show ...
Florida Tar Balls Not Linked To Gulf Oil Spill: Coast Guard Post Date: 2010-05-19 11:34:33 by Brian S

Twenty tar balls recovered from a beach in Key West on Florida's southern tip are not related to the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the US Coast Guard said Wednesday. Captain Pat DeQuattro, commanding officer of the coast guard's Key West sector, said in a statement that officials had reached a "conclusion that these tar balls are not from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill incident." Scientist reached their conclusion after sending samples of the tar to the US Coast Guard Marine Safety Laboratory in New London, Connecticut for testing. The results provided a measure of relief to scientists tracking the oil gushing from a ruptured undersea well off the coast of ...
Victories for Joe Sestak, Rand Paul Signal Voters' Anti-Incumbent Mood Post Date: 2010-05-19 11:26:14 by Brian S

Voters in several high-profile primary races across the country Tuesday sent an unmistakable message to incumbents about their dissatisfaction with politics as usual ahead. In Pennsylvania, Rep. Joe Sestak defeated five-term Sen. Arlen Specter in the state's Democratic Senate primary, while Tea Party-backed candidate Rand Paul captured the Republican Senate nomination in Kentucky, defeating GOP-establishment candidate and Secretary of State Trey Grayson. Paul, who could become the first Tea Party candidate to go to Washington if he wins in November, said on "Good Morning America" today that his victory represents a rejection of the way both parties have handled the ...

No. Seriously. Thomas Friedman actually goes there: Obama And The Oil Spill President Obamas handling of the gulf oil spill has been disappointing. I say that not because I endorse the dishonest conservative critique that the gulf oil spill is somehow Obamas Katrina and that he is displaying the same kind of incompetence that George W. Bush did after that hurricane. To the contrary, Obamas team has done a good job coordinating the cleanup so far. The president has been on top of it from the start. If the start is well over a week later before it was even addressed in the Real World, as opposed to the talk point of day one supported in ObamaLand. Here we ...

Sources have told Local 4 that Detroit Police Department SWAT team member, 34-year-old officer Joseph Weekley is the one whose weapon fired and struck Aiyanna. How that happened is currently under investigation by Michigan State Police. Police said Weekley came into contact with Aiyanas grandmother, Mertilla Jones, when they busted through the door in the early hours of Sunday morning and his weapon accidentally fired. Since the shooting, Weekley has been placed on a desk job. He has ...
Mortgage delinquencies, foreclosures break records (The Obama Depression) Post Date: 2010-05-19 11:10:54 by no gnu taxes

The number of homeowners who missed at least one mortgage payment surged to a record in the first quarter of the year, a sign that the foreclosure crisis is far from over. More than 10 percent of homeowners had missed at least one mortgage payment in the January-March period, the Mortgage Bankers Association said Wednesday. That number was up from 9.5 percent in the fourth quarter of last year and 9.1 percent a year earlier. Those figures are adjusted for seasonal factors. For example, heating bills and holiday expenses tend to push up mortgage delinquencies near the end of the year. Many of those borrowers become current on their loans again by spring. Without adjusting for seasonal ...

Voters rejected one of President Barack Obama's hand-picked candidates and forced another into a runoff, the latest sign that his political capital is slipping beneath a wave of anti-establishment anger. Sen. Arlen Specter became the fourth Democrat in seven months to lose a high-profile race despite the president's active involvement, raising doubts about Obama's ability to help fellow Democrats in this November's elections. The first three candidates fell to Republicans. But Specter's loss Tuesday to Rep. Joe Sestak in Pennsylvania's Democratic senatorial primary cast doubts on Obama's influence and popularity even within his own party and in a ...

President Obama is playing an unusual role in the special election in Pennsylvania to replace the late Rep. Jack Murtha, king of Democratic pork barrelers. Both major party candidates are doing their best to distance themselves from Mr. Obamas policies. Its not surprising that Republican Tim Burns would be running against the Obama White House. But Mark Critz, a former staffer to Mr. Murtha, is spending much of his time as the Democratic candidate beating up on the presidents priorities too. As a sign of just how much blue-collar districts like Mr. Murthas are shifting, Mr. Critz sometimes appears to be trying to outflank Mr. Burns, a local businessman, on the ...
Democrats Keep Murtha’s Seat – by Opposing Obama Post Date: 2010-05-19 08:53:26 by no gnu taxes

The Democrats were able to keep Murthas seat, so long as their candidate opposed Obamacare and cap and trade. But even so, a Republican came close in a strongly Democratic district. The fact that Republicans thought they had a legitimate shot at this seat illustrates what a tough year it should be for the Democrats. Moreover, Critz said he opposed Obamacare and cap and tradealthough, no doubt, once elected he would vote for such legislation if Nancy Pelosi needs him.
Immigrant crossings into Arizona _ The Law Of "Who Cares" Takes Over Post Date: 2010-05-19 08:29:35 by war

NOGALES, Mexico The migrants walk for days through miles of mesquite scrub, running low on food and sometimes water, paying armed drug thug "guides" and dodging U.S. law enforcement officers along the way. And still they keep coming. The latest figures show that Arizona, which is about to put into effect the nation's toughest immigration law, also is the only border state where illegal crossings are on the rise. While tightened security and daunting fences in Texas and California have made Arizona a busy crossing corridor for years, migrant smugglers now are finding new ways through the state's treacherous deserts. Carmen Gonzalez, 27, recalled seven days and six ...

Democrats will retain control of the seat held for decades by the late Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha after winning a special election to fill the final months of his term. Both parties viewed the contest as a test for the fall. With 70 percent of precincts reporting, Murtha aide Mark Critz had 53 percent of the vote compared with nearly 45 percent for businessman Tim Burns. Critz and Burns will have a rematch in the November general election after also winning their parties' nominations in the Pennsylvania primary.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter on Tuesday was defeated in a Democratic primary in his bid for a sixth term after taking the risky step of switching from the GOP. Voters picked U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak as the party's nominee and rejected the 80-year-old Specter in his first Democratic campaign. With 65 percent of precincts reporting, Sestak received 339,402 votes, nearly 53 percent. Specter received 304,179 votes, about 47 percent. The vote also was a defeat for President Barack Obama, who supported Specter when he abandoned the Republican Party last year. The moderate Specter had cast his switch as a decision of principle after inflaming the GOP by voting for Obama's ...

Moody's Warns Oil Spill Impact On Florida Could Be Worse Than Recession Post Date: 2010-05-18 19:33:26 by Brian S

A Moody's report released Tuesday on the potential impact of the oil spill on Florida warns it could hurt the state on a major scale. "The state's high dependence on tourism dollars and jobs is significant and a gradually worsening disaster associated with any part of Florida's 1,197 coastline miles could likely have long-term implications even greater than the recent global recession or Hurricane Ivan in 2004," said Moody's Investor Service analyst and senior credit officer Edith Behr. In effect, the impact could simulate a double dip to the economy in a state already struggling more than most to emerge from one of the country's worst recessions. Here's ...

The blast killed 11 workers. Since then, oil has been pouring into the Gulf from a blown-out undersea well at a rate of at least 210,000 gallons per day. There has been a lot of stir in political circles lately about the government's attempt to regulate what you eat. California has banned trans fat. The New York State Legislature is debating a bill that would ban the use of salt from restaurant cooking. The Congress is debating a law ("S. 510, The Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010"), which would give the government sweeping powers to ban whatever foods they want. The Obama Administration is arguing in a lawsuit pending in federal court that individuals have no "fundamental right" to eat what food they choose. Guess what? So-called conservatives are culpable here too. Why? Because this is a logical consequence of ...

During talks on human rights, Assistant Secretary of State Michael Posner actually apologized to his Chinese counterparts for the Arizona anti illegal immigration law, among other things. Eyebrows are already being raised by the spectacle. According to the AP: "Posner said in addition to talks on freedom of religion and expression, labor rights and rule of law, officials also discussed Chinese complaints about problems with U.S. human rights, which have included crime, poverty, homelessness and racial discrimination. "He said U.S. officials did not whitewash the American record and in fact raised on its own a new immigration law in Arizona that requires police to ask about a ...
Oil Spill To Shut Down 19 Percent Of Gulf Fishing Post Date: 2010-05-18 13:00:43 by Brian S

Federal officials say they're expanding the area of the Gulf of Mexico where fishing is shut down because of a massive oil spill. They had already shut down fishing from the Mississippi River to the Florida Panhandle soon after an offshore oil rig exploded and sank last month. About 7 percent of federal waters were affected. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Tuesday that it's expanding the closed area, though it won't say exactly where until later in the day. Nearly 46,000 square miles, or about 19 percent of federal waters, will be shut under the expanded ban.
Teacher Questioned After Using Obama Assassination As Example In Geometry Class Post Date: 2010-05-18 12:42:52 by Brian S

It's certainly one way to get students to pay attention. Trouble is, it's bound to get the Secret Service's attention too. An Alabama geometry teacher, in an apparent effort to teach his students about parallel lines and angles, used a theoretical assassination attempt on President Barack Obama to demonstrate the angle at which a gunman would have to shoot the president. "He was talking about angles and said, 'If you're in this building, you would need to take this angle to shoot the president,' " said Joseph Brown, a high school senior in the geometry class told The Birmingham News. After the class, word passed up the grapevine to the local branch of ...
BP Oil Spill: “Bush Administration Allowed Safety Precautions To Be Circumvented” Post Date: 2010-05-18 12:17:20 by Brian S

While US senators grill BP over the ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, it has emerged that it was the US government itself - under George W. Bush - which allowed oil companies to leave out a safety device which would have prevented the explosion on 20 April. An American environmentalist tells us: "Our politicians are beholden to the oil companies". Almost a month after the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that killed 11 workers, operator British Petroleum (BP) has yet to find a way to stop oil escaping from the rig, which sunk to the sea floor two days after the incident. The US Coast Guard originally estimated that 1,000 barrels of crude oil were leaking per day, ...

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar concedes the government failed to hold the oil industry accountable and ensure safety in offshore oil drilling. He promises to give "more tools, more resources, more independence and greater authority" to the Minerals Management Service, which regulates drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Salazar on Tuesday was making his first appearance before Congress since the April 20 oil spill. He says in prepared testimony that oil companies have opposed efforts to change "the culture of doing business" at the agency. But Salazar tells the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, "We have not and we will not back down on our reform ...
