White House Covers Up Menacing Oil “Blob” Post Date: 2010-05-21 12:37:06 by no gnu taxes

In an exclusive for Oilprice.com, the Wayne Madsen Report (WMR) has learned from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sources that U.S. Navy submarines deployed to the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean off the Florida coast have detected what amounts to a frozen oil blob from the oil geyser at the destroyed Deep Horizon off-shore oil rig south of Louisiana. The Navy submarines have trained video cameras on the moving blob, which remains frozen at depths of between 3,000 to 4,000 feet. Because the oil blob is heavier than water, it remains frozen at current depths. FEMA and Corps of Engineers employees are upset that the White House and the Pentagon ...
Paul says Obama being too tough on BP Post Date: 2010-05-21 12:09:19 by go65

(CNN) - Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul is taking aim at President Barack Obama's handling of the oil crisis off the Gulf Coast. The president, Paul told ABC, is being too tough on BP - the oil giant that controls the well that has been leaking thousands of barrels of oil a day in the Gulf since late last month. "What I don't like from the president's administration is this sort of 'I'll put my boot heel on the throat of BP,'" said Paul who overwhelmingly won Tuesday's GOP Senate primary in Kentucky and is a favorite of Tea Party activists. "I think that sounds really un-American in his criticisms of businesses." "I've heard ...

In the wake of Tuesdays Pennsylvania special election loss, disappointed House Republican leaders have engaged in a round of soul-searching to determine the causes behind the defeat and put an end to what they view as a potentially damaging campaign narrative. Acknowledging the widespread frustration over the decisive 53 percent to 45 percent Democratic victory, National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Pete Sessions of Texas told the GOP Conference Wednesday he took full responsibility for the loss, according to two Republican sources. House Minority Leader John Boehner, Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R- Calif.), the chief deputy ...
Political problems from oil spill may stick to Obama Post Date: 2010-05-21 10:30:26 by no gnu taxes

Facing pressure to better manage the still-gushing BP oil disaster, the White House is demanding the oil giant better account for how much is spilling and what the environmental effect will be. Lawmakers and environmentalists have claimed BP is low-balling how much oil is spilling into the Gulf of Mexico, and some are beginning to suggest the federal government is complicit. "The notion of a cover-up is ridiculous," said White House press secretary Robert Gibbs. "[BP is] responsible, they get the bill, the taxpayers won't, and it's being overseen by ... many elements of the federal government." But as the uncapped well off the coast of Louisiana continues to ...
Oil spill's political consequences rise for Obama Post Date: 2010-05-21 09:14:45 by no gnu taxes

By repeatedly assigning blame to energy giant BP Plc and focusing ire on the government agency responsible for regulating offshore drilling, Obama has deflected criticism that his administration was sluggish in its initial response to the Gulf of Mexico spill. That may not last. A month since the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and sank, killing 11 people and leaving a ruptured well that has been leaking crude ever since, the feared environmental catastrophe is becoming more and more real. Heavy oil is hitting Louisiana's wetlands. Oil-stained animals are being rescued and cleaned. Gulf Coast economies are suffering and preparing for drawn-out damage. Analysts say as the ecological ...
Leader of the Beaner Nation Calls For United States To Scrap Second Amendment Post Date: 2010-05-21 07:13:18 by A K A Stone

Mexican President, Felipe Calderon asked our government to ban assault weapons, because they are supposedly being purchased here and are smuggled to Mexico by criminals. Calderon also blames U.S. Drug Use for the problems in Mexico, instead of blaming the cartels and the government bodies that are responsible for propagating this mess. So as crime and drug wars run rampant in Mexico and spill over the border, the Mexican president thinks that Americans should limit their capability to defend themselves! Mexico is simply blaming the United States for all of its' problems. Perhaps the real problem is that Mexico has turned into a lawless land, because of government corruption and the ...
Senate Passes Financial Overhaul Bill [ Dems say NYC financial workers are crooks] Post Date: 2010-05-21 01:55:51 by WhiteSands

WASHINGTON -- Prodded by national anger at Wall Street, the Senate on Thursday passed the most far-reaching restraints on big banks since the Great Depression. In its broad sweep, the massive bill would touch Wall Street CEOs and first-time homebuyers, high-flying traders and small town lenders. The 59-39 vote represents an important achievement for President Barack Obama, and comes just two months after his health care overhaul became law. The bill must now be reconciled with a House version that passed in December. A key House negotiator predicted the legislation would reach Obama's desk before the Fourth of July. The legislation aims to prevent a recurrence of the near-meltdown ...
US Top Spy Quits After Intelligence Failures Post Date: 2010-05-20 20:42:52 by Brian S

US spy czar Dennis Blair Thursday said he would quit, paying the price for a string of intelligence failures after a 16-month tenure marred by rumblings of infighting in the clandestine services. Blair, who will be the most high-profile figure yet to leave President Barack Obama's national security team, was heavily criticized after the attempt by an Al-Qaeda linked group to bring down a US airliner on Christmas Day. Some of the 16 US intelligence agencies he was charged with coordinating also came under fire for failing to join the dots before the Fort Hood massacre in November, and the failed Times Square bombing earlier this month. Some Republicans however charged that Blair had ...

WASHINGTON (CNNMoney.com) -- Wall Street reform cleared a crucial test vote on Thursday, all but assuring final Senate passage of the most sweeping regulatory overhaul since the New Deal. The Senate voted 60 to 40 to meet the threshold to overcome filibusters and send the measure to a final vote within days. Three Republicans voted for it, and two Democrats voted against it. The legislation aims to stop bailouts, shines a light on complex financial products and strengthens consumer protection, to a final vote. Final passage, which will require only 51 votes, is likely to come within days. "We've made great progress ... it's been hard to get to this point," said Senate ...

In the wake of Rand Pauls comments on MSNBCs "Rachel Maddow Show" Wednesday night questioning provisions of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the Kentucky Republican Senate nominee said Thursday he supported the law and would not favor its repeal. Paul also said that appearing on Maddows show "was a poor political decision. In an interview with radio talk show host Laura Ingraham, Paul implicitly acknowledged that hed given his opponents ammunition to assail him. It was a turnabout from Wednesday night, when Paul told Maddow, Youre an intelligent person; I like being on your show." In a statement released by his campaign Thursday ...

A summary of events on Thursday, May 20, Day 30 of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill that began with the April 20 explosion and fire on the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, owned by Transocean Ltd. and leased by BP PLC, which is in charge of cleanup and containment. The blast killed 11 workers. Since then, oil has been pouring into the Gulf from a blown-out undersea well at a rate of at least 210,000 gallons per day. HOW MUCH? BP conceded Thursday that more oil than it estimated is gushing into the Gulf of Mexico as heavy crude washed into Louisiana's wetlands for the first time. Mark Proegler, a spokesman for oil giant BP PLC, said a mile-long tube inserted into a leaking pipe over the ...
Obama's Jobs Report Is Total Fiction Post Date: 2010-05-20 13:05:09 by no gnu taxes

The Obama Administrations assertion that the tens of thousands of jobs created by the Census Bureau are a useful bridge over tough times is hogwash, says former census worker Naomi Cohn. They are, truth be told, very short bridges and don't nearly span the wide, rough waters people like me are facing, Cohn says. It seems to me that the Census Bureau is hiring way more people than needed while at the same time doling out only a few half days of work to many employees perhaps to put a shine on the number of new jobs created, Cohn recently wrote in the New York Post. Many of the 66,000 census jobs cannot even be characterized as ...

According to an investigator who testified at Collins preliminary hearing Tuesday, Collins met his 13-year-old victim while responding to a domestic violence call at her Northwest Atlanta home. Detective Kevin Leonpacher testified that Collins took a liking to the young girl and began contacting her repeatedly after the initial call. May 20th, 2010 Sarah Palins presence at an event can draw thousands out to see her speak and evoke emotional responses from those who either love or detest her. It appears her presence will become a divisive force in Idaho politics when she comes Friday to the Qwest Arena to stump for Vaughn Ward, a Marine reservist vying with state Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Eagle, for the GOP nomination to take on Democratic incumbent Walt Minnick in Idahos 1st Congressional District. There will be protesters out to oppose her visit, but the group wont be made up of anti-Palin Democrats; it will consist of anti-Palin Republicans angry over her involvement in local politics and her recent ...
Aiyana Jones' Death Raises Questions About Reality TV Post Date: 2010-05-20 11:48:22 by Brian S

DETROIT (AP) -- When police burst into a home in search of a murder suspect, a reality TV crew documented the raid - and may have recorded the death of a 7-year-old girl accidentally killed by an officer. Aiyana Stanley-Jones' death put a spotlight on the growing number of reality shows that focus on law enforcement. A number of big-city departments have used shows such as Fox's "Cops" to attract recruits. Others have shied away from the up-close attention. And critics have questioned whether police behave differently when cameras are watching. Some experts and officers believe TV crews increase accountability. "I don't see someone doing anything outlandish for ...

LANDFALL: NIGHTMARE SCENE AS OIL SMOTHERS LOUISIANA WETLANDS Post Date: 2010-05-20 11:38:33 by Brian S

Crude oil spread through fragile US marshlands Thursday, a month after a drilling rig blast released a devastating spill that now threatens Florida, Cuba and even beyond. Oil has been pouring into the Gulf of Mexico since the massive April 20 explosion on the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon rig that killed 11 and ruptured an underwater well pipe. While British Petroleum said Thursday that a tube was now siphoning away 3,000 barrels of oil a day from the leak, a nightmare scene was unfolding in Louisiana wetlands. "The day that we have all been fearing is upon us today," Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said Wednesday after seeing thick oil washing into the state's coastal ...

A private research group's index of leading economic indicators unexpectedly slipped in April, its first drop in more than a year and a sign that growth could slow this summer. The Conference Board said its gauge of future economic activity edged down 0.1 percent last month, the first decline since March 2009. Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had expected a gain of 0.2 percent. The index is designed to forecast economic activity in the next three to six months. The decline "suggests a recovery that will continue through summer, although it could lose a little steam," said Ken Goldstein, an economist at the Conference Board. While the recovery from the recession has ...
Scientists accuse Obama over oil spill Post Date: 2010-05-20 10:35:12 by no gnu taxes

Tensions between the Obama administration and the scientific community over the gulf oil spill are escalating, with prominent oceanographers accusing the government of failing to conduct an adequate scientific analysis of the damage and of allowing BP to obscure the spills true scope. The scientists assert that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other agencies have been slow to investigate the magnitude of the spill and the damage it is causing in the deep ocean. They are especially concerned about getting a better handle on problems that may be occurring from large plumes of oil droplets that appear to be spreading beneath the ocean surface. The scientists ...

The number of U.S. workers filing new applications for unemployment insurance unexpectedly rose last week for the first time since early April, government data showed on Thursday, dealing a blow to the labor market recovery. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 25,000 to a seasonally adjusted 471,000 in the week ended May 15, the highest level since the week ended April 10, the Labor Department said. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected claims to fall to 440,000 from the previously reported 444,000, which was revised marginally up to 446,000 in Thursday's report. The four-week moving average of new claims, which is considered a better measure of underlying ...

The White House appears to be laying the groundwork for President Barack Obama to shake the hand of each senior at Kalamazoo Central High Schools commencement ceremony next month. Seniors are being asked to provide their birthdates, Social Security numbers and citizen status to the Secret Service so background checks could be performed. Such a check is required for anyone who gets within an arms length of the president, students were told at their senior breakfast Friday. Of the fact that the White House is requesting information on all the graduating seniors, K-Central Principal Von Washingon Jr. told the students, Ill let you figure out what that means, ...

BP Told Feds It Could Handle Oil Spill 60 Times Larger Than Deepwater Horizon Post Date: 2010-05-19 12:20:23 by Brian S

In its 2009 exploration plan for the Deepwater Horizon well, BP PLC states that the company could handle a spill involving as much as 12.6 million gallons of oil per day, a number 60 times higher than its current estimate of the ongoing Gulf disaster. In associated documents filed with the U.S. Minerals Management Service, the company says that it would be able to skim 17.6 million gallons of oil a day from the Gulf in the event of a spill. As of Tuesday, BP reported recovering 6 million gallons of oily water since the ongoing spill began four weeks ago. BP spokesman Tom Mueller said that only about 10 percent of the skimmed liquid was oil, which would amount to about 600,000 gallons of ...
