Newark, New Jersey -- Two New Jersey men arrested Saturday for allegedly planning to "wage violent jihad" made their first court appearance Monday. Mohamed Mahmood Alessa, 20, of North Bergen, New Jersey, and Carlos Eduardo Almonte, 24, of Elmwood Park, New Jersey, entered U.S. District Court in Newark wearing chains around their waists and wrists. They were read a charge -- one count of conspiracy to kill, maim and murder persons outside of the United States -- which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. Alessa had bruises on his forehead and cheek. His father, Mahmood Alessa, said they appeared to be fresh. Both defendants said "yes" when asked if they ...

The S&P 500 index (SPX) lost 14 points, or 1.4% and closed at its lowest point since Nov. 4. The Nasdaq composite (COMP) fell 45 points, or 2% and closed at its lowest point since Feb. 11. Seven people were killed in Ohio as severe thunderstorms and tornadoes raked the Midwest on Saturday and early Sunday, authorities said. The deaths came in Wood County when a tornado touched down there overnight, state Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Kelli Blackwell told CNN. Wood County is about 30 miles south of Toledo. A 5-year-old child was among the deaths in Millbury, Ohio, according to Wood County dispatchers, who received the information from Lake Township Police Chief Mark Hummer. Four other victims ranged in age from 20 to 56, dispatchers said, and details on the remaining two were not immediately available. A man was also found dead in the street in Millbury, and two ...

Juan Williams to the amazement of some of his co-panelists let it rip on Fox News Sunday. The subject was nominally the Sestak and Romanoff scandals, but Williams found the bigger theme: -- I think the problem here is this is an administration that, as Hillary Clinton famously pointed out, you may not want to have answer the 3:00 a.m. call. These are guys who have tremendous vision about legislative achievements and specific things like health care, going forward on immigration, those difficult issues for America that America so far has failed to deal with. But when it comes to the crisis, when it comes to the gulf oil spill, the wars, the recession, they feel as if ...

In between his meek response to the oil spill fiasco and his lame attempt to talk his way out of the Joe Sestak pseudo-bribery scandal, President Obama on Friday probably thought he had something cool to talk about: the economy. People are still hurting, the president conceded, but look on the bright side: Unemployment has fallen two whole percentage points to 9.7 percent, and the economy is getting stronger, with three consecutive quarters of positive GDP growth. His stimulus package was supposed to produce shovel-ready jobs that would repair our infrastructure much like the various public-works programs instituted by Hoover and Roosevelt. But instead of spending the money on building ...

Barack Obama tries to pick the tar balls off of his legacy What did the President know and when did he know it? According to Richard Wolffe Barack Obama was apprised not only of the leak, but of the magnitude of the leak, how hard it would be to repair and how long it could go on: Critics have bashed President Obama for being slow to seize the political initiative in combating the BP oil spill in the Gulf Coast, now widely believed to be the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. The White House has battled back, releasing a timeline of events showing that Obama was briefedand deploying the Coast Guardwithin 24 hours of the Deepwater Horizon blowout. What has not ...

Typical Democrat. Create a problem, then blame Bush or the Republicans for your creation when it blows up. Further proof that when Barack Obama tells you the sky is blue, its best to stick your head out the window and check for yourself. The BP oil leak, its Bush and the Republicans fault. Record deficits created by Obama and the Democrats. Nope, not their fault! Its Bush and the Republicans fault! Al Gores marriage disillusionment? You got it! Its Bush and the Republicans again! Responsibility and accountability are alien to Obama and the Democrats (unless something goes well). That party is even trying to rewrite history by claiming responsibility for the ...

With the mainstream media focusing on the countrys leveling unemployment rate, improving retail sales, and nascent housing recovery, one might think that the US government has successfully navigated the economy through recession and growth has returned. But I will argue that a look under the proverbial hood reveals a very different picture. I believe the data shows that the US economy is badly damaged, and a modern-day depression has begun. In fact, just as World War I was originally called The Great War (and was retroactively renamed after World War II), Peter Schiff has said that one day the world will refer to the 1929-41 era as Great Depression I, and the current period as Great ...

People can change the volume, the location and the composition of their income, and they can do so in response to changes in government policies. It shouldn't surprise anyone that the nine states without an income tax are growing far faster and attracting more people than are the nine states with the highest income tax rates. People and businesses change the location of income based on incentives. Likewise, who is gobsmacked when they are told that the two wealthiest AmericansBill Gates and Warren Buffetthold the bulk of their wealth in the nontaxed form of unrealized capital gains? The composition of wealth also responds to incentives. And it's also simple enough for ...

Why Are We Tolerating Helen Thomas' Journalistic Hypocrisy? By Judith Miller Published June 07, 2010 AP Blessed are the peacemakers, if you can find any in the Middle East. They seem to be in short supply these days. One place not to look is on the Gaza flotilla. The Helen Thomas Backlash [Daniel Foster] Former Clinton attorney and White House spokesman Lanny Davis issued the following statement on White House correspondent Helen Thomas's incindiary remarks contra Israel. The statement is lightly edited for clarity: Helen Thomas, who I used to consider a close friend and who I used to respect, has showed herself to be an anti-Semitic bigot. This is not about her criticisms of Israel. She has a right to criticize Israel and that is not the same as being an anti-Semite. However, her statement that Jews in Israel should leave Israel and go back to Poland or Germany is an ancient and well-known anti-Semitic stereotype of the Alien Jew not ...

STREATOR, Ill., June 6 (UPI) -- Operators of a nuclear power plant in Michigan said they shut down early Sunday during a powerful storm system that produced tornadoes that killed five people. The storms were rolling into the Northeast Sunday afternoon, triggering tornado watches from Virginia to New England. The Fermi 2 Power Plant near Monroe, Mich., shut down automatically after the foul weather knocked out one of two offsite power feeds to the plant. DTE Energy said in a written statement that a low-priority alert was also generated after the winds knocked some siding off a building at the complex, but there was no radiation danger. Elsewhere, the death toll in Ohio rose to five as ...

MILLBURY, Ohio A tornado unleashed a "war zone" of destruction in northwest Ohio, destroying dozens of homes and an emergency services building as a line of storms killed at least seven people and threatened to do more damage Sunday as it hit the Northeast. Storms collapsed a movie-theater roof in Illinois and ripped siding off a building at a Michigan nuclear plant, forcing a shutdown. But most of the worst was reserved for a 100-yard-wide, 7-mile-long strip southeast of Toledo now littered with wrecked vehicles, splintered wood and family possessions. The tornado ripped the roof and back wall off Lake High School's gymnasium about 11 p.m. Saturday, several hours ...

United States President George W. Bush has finally spoken out. After remaining silent since Barack Hussein Obama assumed office and claimed he could lead America, President Bush has had enough and is once again giving his sage wisdom and leadership to America. President Bush is a man of action and decision; he knows what is best for America and does not cater to the whims of polls or the press. President Bush uses his pulpit as an executive and only takes orders from the highest order: God. This is how our Christian nation should be lead. A dignified leader, President George W. Bush kept a low profile and tried to help Obama smoothly transition into office, despite his gut instinct to ...
