Nikki Haley Can't Avoid Runoff in South Carolina

South Carolina Republican gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley easily outdistanced three competitors in the GOP primary today - but she will not meet the 50 percent threshold she needed to avoid a runoff. The Associated Press called the runoff with Haley holding about 49 percent of the vote and 84 percent of precincts reporting. Rep. Gresham Barrett, one of the most conservative members of the House, will take second place and earn the other spot in the June 22nd runoff, according to the AP. He holds about 21 percent of the vote. Attorney General Henry McMaster is on pace to take third place, and Lt. Gov Andre Bauer will finish in fourth. It's been an eventful campaign for Haley, 38, ...

Scientists: Gulf Oil Leak May Be Bigger Than BP Says
Post Date: 2010-06-08 22:12:46 by Brian S

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- While BP is capturing more oil from its blown-out well with every passing day, scientists on a team analyzing the flow said Tuesday that the amount of crude still escaping into the Gulf of Mexico may be considerably greater than what the government and the company have claimed. Their assertions - combined with BP's rush to build a bigger cap and its apparent difficulty in immediately processing all the oil being collected - have only added to the impression that the company is still floundering in dealing with the catastrophe. The cap that was put on the ruptured well last week collected about 620,000 gallons of oil on Monday and another 330,000 from midnight to ...

MSNBC Anchors in 'Anguish' Over Helen Thomas Retirement By Alex Fitzsimmons (Bio | Archive) Tue, 06/08/2010 - 14:59 ET MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, Chuck Todd, and Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday’s “The Daily Rundown” were in “anguish” over the forced retirement of Helen Thomas, but showed little sympathy for the Israelis that the Hearst columnist so odiously disrespected. “I think a lot of people feel some anguish about this because the comments were beyond the pale,” lamented Guthrie. “And yet it tarnishes a career that otherwise people would be celebrating because she was indeed a trailblazer.” Glossing over the longtime ...

CIA Goes 14 Months Without Internal Watchdog

WASHINGTON -- More than a year after the CIA's inspector general stepped down, frustrated members of Congress are urging the White House to fill the internal watchdog position that was central in uncovering abuses inside the spy agency. Several possible candidates have fallen by the wayside despite assurances from the Obama administration that a nominee will be chosen soon. The pressure from Congress comes as the administration is contending with concerns about its intelligence structure. A spate of failed terrorist attacks since December exposed flaws in the intelligence community's oversight. The administration also faces congressional unease over its new nominee for national ...

PHOENIX — The estranged wife of a man who helped launch patrols along the U.S.-Mexico border accuses him of threatening to kill their family and any police who try to help. Chris Simcox's wife is seeking a divorce and alleges in court documents that he twice brandished a gun and threatened to shoot his family in late 2009 — four years after he helped found the Minuteman movement that drew thousands of anti-illegal immigration activists to patrol the border. Simcox worked recently as an adviser to J.D. Hayworth, who is challenging Sen. John McCain in Arizona's Republican primary. A Hayworth spokesman says Simcox is no longer affiliated with the campaign. A judge in ...

It was a big deal for the excited about-to-be graduates of Kalamazoo's Central High School. They had won a White House competition against 1,000 other schools, not for payoff jobs in the Obama administration. But to see and hear the Real Great Talker himself. President Barack Obama went all the way to Michigan Monday to congratulate the teenagers and their proud families: I’m here tonight because I think that America has a lot to learn from Kalamazoo Central about what makes for a successful school in this new century: Educators raising standards and inspiring their students to meet them. Community members stepping up as tutors and mentors and coaches. Parents taking an active ...

Who will win the Republican nomination to oppose Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (R-N.V.) in November? In recent weeks, proven conservative Sharron Angle, endorsed by the Nevada Tea Party, the Club for Growth, and prominent conservative leaders, has rocketed ahead of two more well-known, establishment candidates, Danny Tarkanian and former GOP state party chairwoman Sue Lowden. Angle's candidacy has surged on a campaign built on substantive specifics on tax and spending issues, with a unifying ...

Poll: The Sagging Popularity Of The Tea Parties

A new Washington Post/ABC News poll includes questions about the tea parties that have the nascent movement's popularity slipping badly. Overall, since the last poll, the percentage of Americans who hold an unfavorable view of the movement has jumped from 39 percent to 50 percent. The leading edge of that has been a collapse in support from 18-29-year-olds. In March, they had a positive, 43-38 view of the tea parties. They've swung hard to a negative view, 27-60. One result that surprises me: a seeming tumble in tea party support from white Southerners. In March, only 30 percent had an unfavorable view of the movement. Now, it's 45 percent. I don't think this is really a ...

Alarmed by the use of hard-to-track prepaid cell phones by terror suspects, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer and Texas Sen. John Cornyn have introduced legislation requiring consumers to produce identification before buying such phones. The bill has been praised by law enforcement and has bipartisan support, even as civil liberties groups have raised privacy concerns and some terror experts say it won't deter bad behavior. Schumer, a Democrat, and Cornyn, a Republican, are hoping to schedule hearings on the bill through the Judiciary Committee. Schumer has urged Attorney General Eric Holder to back the measure. Prepaid phones can be a lifeline for people with limited incomes or poor ...

(06-08) 07:57 PDT , (AP) -- A summary of events on Tuesday, June 8, Day 49 of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill that began with the April 20 explosion and fire on the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, owned by Transocean Ltd. and leased by BP PLC, which is in charge of cleanup and containment. The blast killed 11 workers. Since then, oil has been pouring into the Gulf from a blown-out undersea well. OVERVIEW Officials reported that a containment cap over the BP gusher at the bottom of the Gulf was sucking up one-third to three-quarters of the oil — but also noted that its effects could linger for years. And as the oil patches flirt with the coastline, slathering some spots and leaving ...

June 8 (Bloomberg) -- Undersea clouds of oil that can kill off marine life have stretch for miles in the Gulf of Mexico from BP Plc’s leaking Macondo well, according to preliminary data released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration today. Water samples collected by the R/V Weatherbird II vessel have confirmed biodegraded crude oil in two undersea layers as far as 40 nautical miles northeast of BP’s seabed leak, NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco said at a press briefing. The vessel’s samples show oil as deep as 3,300 feet in the water, Lubchenco said. “The bottom line is that yes, there is oil in the water column, it’s at very low concentrations, ...

On his radio show today, Glenn Beck heralded and promoted the work of Nazi sympathizer Elizabeth Dilling, who spoke at rallies hosted by the leading American Nazi group and praised Hitler. Today, Dilling is heralded by White Supremacists and White Aryans who revere her "fearless" work against Jewish people. As Media Matters' Simon Maloy noted, Beck had kind words for Dilling's 1934 anti-communist book, The Red Network, saying: "This is a book -- and I'm a getting a ton of these -- from people who were doing what we're doing now. We now are documenting who all of these people are. Well, there were Americans in the first 50 years of this nation that took this ...

Five reasons the employment numbers are worse than they seem (The Obama Depression)

The news on jobs isn't as bad as it seemed on Friday. It's worse. President Obama and Treasury Secretary Geithner were trying to putting on a happy face, but the markets weren't buying. They have tumbled worldwide since the latest payroll data. But instead of overreacting, the markets may only just be waking up to the real bad news. 1. Look out ahead. We already know that when you strip out the short-term Census jobs, May's jobs growth was a pitiful 41,000. But what people haven't realized is that the leading indicators for June are even worse. TrimTabs Investment Research Inc. tracks the real-time jobs picture by monitoring income tax deposits at the Treasury. And ...

Obama Is Incompetent and Out of Touch. Now Trying to Rewrite History

Obama may want to rewrite the history of his response and claim he was on the scene before everyone else was paying attention, but that is patently untrue. When the spill happened, President Obama didn’t go to the gulf, he went to the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC for vacation. He’s been on another vacation since that time, done a few fundraisers in San Fransisco for Barbara Boxer, played seven or so rounds of golf, hosted a couple White House parties, and dined with Mexican President Calderon who attacked the people of Arizona. It seems like President Obama has been doing everything but working on the oil spill off Louisiana’s coast. Maybe the first “ass” that ...

HIALEAH — For Gerardo Regalado — half-brother of former New York Yankees pitcher Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez — it was obvious his young, pretty wife was moving on. "I'm stupid because I had everything and I threw it away," he wrote on the Facebook page of his wife, Liazan Molina, 24, whom he had brought to the United States from Cuba in 2007 and called "the love of my life." "My days have no sunshine; the nights have no stars," he wrote a week ago. Another posting on May 30: "If you ever need me, call me." By Sunday night, Regalado's apparent resignation had turned into a rage that left five people dead, including ...

Does Studying Economics Make You More Republican?

Several academic studies have found that there is a link between education levels and civic behavior. But a new study from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York has concluded that how much economics people study can influence their political activity and how they spend their spare time. The study compared the behavior of economics majors with those of business majors and other graduates of four large public universities — Purdue University, the University of North Carolina, Florida Atlantic University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The subjects attended those schools in one of three years: 1976, 1986 or 1996. Most notably, the study found that the more economics classes a ...

Time Is Running Out for Obama

Either President Obama fixes what's broken in the economy, or he will be remembered for spending his entire first term blaming George Bush. Last week's jobs report was terrible for the 11th month in a recovery. With nearly $800 billion in stimulus spending at its point of maximum impact, federal employment -- net of temporary census jobs -- was up a mere 1,000 in May. Private-sector employment was up an insignificant 41,000, only one-fourth the pace of the previous two months. Retailers are again cutting employment, as consumers, turned pessimistic, flee the malls. Making worse a stock market panicked by European debt woes, the President claims his policies are working. Several people were burned, and "we've got an unknown number of people still unaccounted for," Cleburne Fire Chief Clint Ishmael said. Crews could get no closer than 600 yards to the source of the fire, he said. "There's no way we can try to put this fire out," Ishmael said. The pipeline erupted around 2:40 p.m. CT, and the shaking lasted for about 10 minutes, said Laura Harlin, who lives about a mile away. "Our house shook, glass shook," Harlin said. "We watched this huge plume of smoke or steam rising above ...
