President Obama has already appointed more openly LGBT staffers to his administration than the administrations of George W. Bush and Bill Clinton combined, according to Shin Inouye, director of specialty media in the White House communications office. Inouye made the observation at a panel discussion about LGBT presidential appointees held last night at the National Press Club in Washington. The discussion was sponsored by the National Gay & Lesbian Journalists Association and the Washington Blade. Other appointees on the panel included Elaine Kaplan (pictured), General Counsel at the Office of Personnel Management, and Matt Nosanchuk, Senior Counselor to the Assistant Attorney ...

Whitman Blasts Brown for Nazi Comments in California Governor's Race Published June 11, 2010 | Associated Press Meg Whitman SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman on Thursday criticized remarks attributed to rival Jerry Brown that made a comparison between her campaign and a Nazi propagandist. The comments attributed to Brown were posted Wednesday in a blog by a reporter for KCBS radio in San Francisco. In his blog, which was on the station's website, reporter Doug Sovern says he was riding his bike in the Oakland hills when he bumped into the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, who was jogging. What's the Mama Grizzly Up To? (Only Dummies Think Palin is a Dummy)

When Sarah Palin, in a rambling lakeside announcement last July in Wasilla, said she was quitting as governor of Alaska because of the abuse she and her family were taking from petty politicians and a feral press, she was written off as dead by the pundits. "A quitter, can't take the heat," was the Beltway consensus. Yet, it seems that was no more the end of Sarah than it was the end of Richard Nixon when, after losing to Gov. Pat Brown in California in 1962, he spat at the press: "Just think how much you're going to be missing. You won't have Nixon to kick around anymore because, gentlemen, this is my last press conference." Six years later, Nixon took ...

New Estimates Double Rate of Oil That Flowed Into Gulf By JUSTIN GILLIS and HENRY FOUNTAIN Published: June 10, 2010 Enlarge This Image Doug Mills/The New York Times Christopher Jones, brother of Gordon Jones, who died on the oil rig Deepwater Horizon, met Thursday with President Obama. The new estimate is 25,000 to 30,000 barrels of oil a day. That range, still preliminary, is far above the previous estimate of 12,000 to 19,000 barrels a day. These new calculations came as the public wrangling between BP and the White House was reaching new heights, with President Obama asking for a meeting with BP executives next week and his Congressional allies intensifying their pressure on the oil ...

Companies employing illegal immigrants could lose government contracts or licenses if they continue to employ those workers under two bills pending in the state Legislature. The state House of Representative Tuesday passed the Industry Employment Verification Act and an employment verification amendment to the state law. The bills are now being sent to the state Senate for debate. The bills require construction companies, contractors and subcontractors providing goods or services to state agencies to use a free Internet-based employment verification system operated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to determine if a new employee is allowed to work in the United States. For the ...

Minorities now make up 35 percent of the U.S. population and count for more than 50 percent of residents in Texas, Hawaii, New Mexico, California and Washington, D.C., the Census Bureau says in new estimates for 2009. The update indicates that minorities increased by 107.2 million people, or 2.5 percent, last year, with growth coming from Hispanic births and individuals who identify as biracial. The white population remained flat at just under 200 million, 65 percent of the country. In 2000, whites made up 79 percent of the population, the Associated Press said. The overall minority population is up from 34 percent a year ago, continuing a trend that could collectively make minorities -- ...

Unfortunately he is transforming America into a European socialist’s dream. You can call him a “progressive” I guess. That is the name he and those like him prefer so as not to alarm all citizens to their Marxist tendencies. Congressional Democrats and the White House are toying with different ways to force BP to cover the costs of damages from the Gulf oil spill. But they face stiff opposition from industry...and it seems leading Republicans. In response to a question from TPMDC, House Minority Leader John Boehner said he believes taxpayers should help pick up the tab for the clean up. "I think the people responsible in the oil spill--BP and the federal government--should take full responsibility for what's happening there," Boehner said at his weekly press conference this morning. Boehner's statement followed comments last Friday by US Chamber of Commerce CEO Tom Donohue who said he ...

Amongst Republicans Palin is seen most favorably at 66%, followed by Gingrich and Huckabee, who both receive 50%. Ron Paul is the weakest with a meager 25% approval rating amongst Republicans. However, Paul is the strongest with voters who identify as independents or others. ...

A college instructor who worked as a senior elections clerk for the city and county of Honolulu in 2008 is making the stunning claim Barack Obama was definitely not born in Hawaii as the White House maintains, and that a long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate for Obama does not even exist in the Aloha State. Tim Adams, a former senior elections clerk for Honolulu, now teaches English at Western Kentucky University. "There is no birth certificate," said Tim Adams, a graduate assistant who teaches English at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky. "It's like an open secret. There isn't one. Everyone in the government there knows this." Adams, ...

Primary Lessons Posted by Jacob Laksin on Jun 10th, 2010 As President Obama’s poll ratings tumble and the Democratic majority in Congress continues to post record disapproval numbers, some on the Left have consoled themselves with the thought that the growing grassroots hostility to incumbent candidates transcends party and ideology. In this exegesis, liberal and progressive discontents are just as wound up – and just as influential – as their conservative Tea Party counterparts. If this week’s primary election results proved anything, it’s that this reading of the nation’s political map won’t wash. While the Tea Parties continued to notch victories in ...

Crist takes down pro-life section on website Jeannie DeAngelis Hugging cherubic children, to win elections, used to be the norm, but not any more. Apparently, fewer babies mean a greater number of votes for certain politicians. In fact, Governor Charlie Crist, hoped to secure an open U.S. Senate seat in Florida by removing pro-life sentiments from his campaign website. Newly minted Independent Charlie Crist has faith to believe that aborted babies could be the ticket that delivers him a hotly contested senate seat over conservative Republican rival, Marco Rubio and Democrat, Kendrick Meek. Although conveniently pro-life for over a decade, Crist took down the sanctity of life section from ...

Republicans seek early momentum as general election season starts At a unity rally in Anaheim, Whitman chides Brown for his 40-year history in elected office, and Fiorina jabs at Boxer. Democrats appear poised to paint the women as wealthy corporate marauders. As California's general election campaign officially opened Wednesday, each party's line of attack began to take shape, with an energized Republican Party appearing to seize the early momentum. At a time when many Californians are struggling financially and skeptical of government, the Republicans sketched out a narrative on the day after a gubernatorial primary that appeared to have the lowest voter turnout in the 96 years ...

The Transformative Power of Rick Santelli’s Rant His complaints about the Obama Democrats’ policies were rooted in moral considerations as well as economics. After the latest round of primaries, some lessons can already be drawn from this political year. Incumbents are not popular, especially Democratic incumbents. Democrats’ big-government programs are hugely unpopular. Economic distress has made Americans yearn not for more government but for less. How to explain something contrary to the New Deal historians’ teaching that economic distress increases support for big government? Clues can be obtained, I think, by examining what amounts to the founding document of the ...

A pair of new polls show former professional wrestling CEO Linda McMahon could be closing the gap slightly in the Connecticut Senate race. But one is a McMahon campaign poll. The other, from the well- respected Connecticut pollster Quinnipiac, shows not much is happening at all. In the last Quinnipiac poll, taken May 24-25, Blumenthal led McMahon by a margin of 56-31. In the new Q poll, conducted June 2-8, McMahon has closed that gap a little. That poll shows Blumenthal ahead by a margin of 55-35. (The poll was conducted among 1,350 registered voters and has a margin of error of 2.7%). The McMahon campaign poll, released yesterday, shows the race is even closer than that. The poll, ...
