The aftermath of the BP oil rig disaster has been front-and-center in the last month. Invariably, when discussing the response to the disaster, the following question is asked, Why has this president and his administration dragged their collective feet in their response to this? Its not a question with an easy answer. One could speculate about vested interests, but that would only serve to fuel conspiracy theories and not help solve the actual problems. One could mention the glacial pace of bureaucracies in a general sense but, again, that line of reasoning doesnt solve problems. But even when discussing real solutions, like harnessing the free-market and putting ...

Day 60 In The Gulf: For God’s Sake Mr President – Waive The Jones Act And Ask For Help Now! Post Date: 2010-06-18 09:20:54 by no gnu taxes

National Incident Commander Admiral Thad Allen today announced the development of specific guidance to ensure accelerated processing of requests for Jones Act waivers should they be received as a part of the BP oil spill response. [After 60 days - "accelerated processing" is not what is required. Swallow your pride, admit the mistake, wave the Jones Act and move on with the job at hand - cleanup the spill] Currently, 15 foreign-flagged vessels are involved in the largest response to an oil spill in U.S. history. No Jones Act waivers have been granted because none of these vessels have required such a waiver to conduct their operations in the Gulf of Mexico. [Only two of the ...

President Obama is working hard at being the most incompetent boob ever to haunt the Oval Office. Post Date: 2010-06-18 09:13:38 by no gnu taxes

President Obama is working hard at being the most incompetent boob ever to haunt the Oval Office. He has made anybody with more than 100 bucks to his name a member of the New Axis of Evil, and he's hell-bent on destroying any company that believes in making things at a profit that is beyond what the Chosen One himself decides is "fair". He has placed himself and his cronies in the roles of little gods on earth that can create Utopia by fiat as long as we hand over all our money and shut up. Obama has no concept of the notion that BP didn't intend to lose an expensive drilling platform and cause millions of dollars in their profits to pollute the Gulf. Not even BP has ...
SO OBAMA HAS EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL IN THE GULF - YEAH RIGHT! Post Date: 2010-06-18 09:09:33 by no gnu taxes

During his Oval Office pack of lies delivered on Tuesday evening Barack Obama claimed he was in charge and had everything under control in the Gulf of Mexico and that the clean up effort which gets worse everyday was progressing well and he had everything in place to successfully handle the situation. Of course we knew that as he was spewing this lie out of his political mouth, that Obama may be in charge but is not even close to having things under, "control," nor have the necessary means in place in order to handle the situation. We already know he has personally turned down assistance from 13 countries as well as leaving necessary equipment like booms etc. sitting idle in ...

Obama exceeds Jimmy Carter incompetent fool territory and goes right to malfeasance. -- Crucial offers to help clean up BPs oil spill came from Belgian, Dutch, and Norwegian firms that . . . possess some of the worlds most advanced oil skimming ships. But the Obama administration didnt accept their help, because doing so would require it to do something past presidents have routinely done: waive rules imposed by the Jones Act, a law backed by unions. The BP clean-up effort in the Gulf of Mexico is hampered by the Jones Act. This is a piece of 1920s protectionist legislation, that requires all vessels working in U.S. waters to be American-built, and ...

Draper, Utah (AP) -- Death row inmate Ronnie Lee Gardner died in a barrage of bullets early Friday as Utah carried out its first firing squad execution in 14 years. Gardner was strapped into a chair, a black hood was fastened around his head, and a team of five marksmen aimed their guns at a white target pinned to his chest. He was pronounced dead at 12:17 a.m. A corrections officials had put the time of death was 12:20 a.m. before correcting it. Gardner was allowed to choose between the firing squad and lethal injection because he was sentenced to death before Utah eliminated the firing squad as an option in 2004. He told his lawyer he did it because he preferred it -- not because he ...
U.S. Debt and the Greece Analogy Post Date: 2010-06-18 08:30:07 by war

An urgency to rein in budget deficits seems to be gaining some traction among American lawmakers. If so, it is none too soon. Perceptions of a large U.S. borrowing capacity are misleading. Despite the surge in federal debt to the public during the past 18 monthsto $8.6 trillion from $5.5 trillioninflation and long-term interest rates, the typical symptoms of fiscal excess, have remained remarkably subdued. This is regrettable, because it is fostering a sense of complacency that can have dire consequences. Beneath the calm, there are market signals that do not bode well for the future. For generations there had been a large buffer between the borrowing capacity of the U.S. ...
Madeleine Albright's Diplomatic Jewelry: 'Read My Pins' at Smithsonian Post Date: 2010-06-18 08:23:35 by war

Let me start by saying I am a jewelry junkie. Gold. Silver. Brass. Glass. Bakelite. Fakelite. Mother of Plastic. Cultured Pearl. Titanium. Rubber. Leather. Feather. It doesn't matter. I love every piece I own. And when I need a really serious fix of eye-popping eye candy, I head over to the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum to ogle the Hope Diamond. Now, just in time for summer, there is a new exhibition of baubles, many of them frankly fake, at the nearby Smithsonian Castle on the National Mall. They belong to former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who famously turned her bodice into a diplomatic sign board in late 1994 while U.N. ambassador, and never looked back. The ...
Cracks Show BP Was Battling Gulf Well as Early as February Post Date: 2010-06-18 00:33:56 by Brian S

BP Plc was struggling to seal cracks in its Macondo well as far back as February, more than two months before an explosion killed 11 and spewed oil into the Gulf of Mexico. It took 10 days to plug the first cracks, according to reports BP filed with the Minerals Management Service that were later delivered to congressional investigators. Cracks in the surrounding rock continued to complicate the drilling operation during the ensuing weeks. Left unsealed, they can allow explosive natural gas to rush up the shaft. Once they realized they had oil down there, all the decisions they made were designed to get that oil at the lowest cost, said Peter Galvin of the Center for ...
Fired Chicago police lieutenant denies torturing suspects Post Date: 2010-06-17 23:30:44 by WhiteSands

CHICAGO A former police lieutenant whose name has become synonymous with police brutality in Chicago ended years of silence about allegations that suspects were tortured under his watch, testifying Thursday at his perjury trial that he never beat, shocked or suffocated anyone into giving confessions. "No sir, I did not," Jon Burge, 62, said in federal court. For years, the mention of Burge's name has triggered anger in the black community over allegations made by dozens of men that Burge and his officers tortured them into confessing to crimes. And when Burge who was fired in 1993 over alleged mistreatment of a suspect retired to a quiet life in Florida ...

WASHINGTONShes blamed environmentalists for helping cause the catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico, accused U.S. President Barack Obama of using the oil spill to raise energy prices and urged the White House to contact the Dutch because they are known for dikes. Sarah Palin the guiding light of the foundering Tea Party movement whose energy mantra is drill, baby, drill is back in the national spotlight in the midst of the worst environmental disaster in American history. And Democrats are likely grateful for it. Even Bill OReilly of Fox News, the cable news giant that gave the self-styled hockey mom her own show and frequently uses her ...
Congress tells Hayward BP ignored oil well dangers Post Date: 2010-06-17 21:44:39 by go65

BP chief executive Tony Hayward has been told by an angry US Congressional panel his firm ignored dangers when drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. House committee on energy and commerce chairman Henry Waxman said BP's "complacency" before the 20 April rig explosion had been "astonishing". He accused Mr Hayward of "stonewalling" for failing to answer his questions. As a public relations exercise for BP, the hearing was a disaster, a BBC correspondent says. Over and over, the BP chief refused to agree with the conclusions of a group of angry, hostile Congressmen and women who seemed in no doubt, after their own lengthy enquiries, that BP had shown a reckless ...

BP Oil Spill: Against Gov. Jindal's Wishes, Crude-Sucking Barges Stopped by Coast Guard Eight days ago, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal ordered barges to begin vacuuming crude oil out of his state's oil-soaked waters. Today, against the governor's wishes, those barges sat idle, even as more oil flowed toward the Louisiana shore. "It's the most frustrating thing," the Republican governor said today in Buras, La. "Literally, yesterday morning we found out that they were halting all of these barges." Watch "World News" for David Muir's report from Louisiana tonight. Sixteen barges sat stationary today, although they were sucking up thousands of ...
Dick Armey: Tea Party Candidates Should Avoid Tea Party Label Post Date: 2010-06-17 19:33:13 by Brian S

Former Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey, one of the drivers of the Tea Party movement, is suggesting that Republican political candidates should shy away from the "Tea Party" label to avoid harsher scrutiny. Armey's conservative nonprofit group FreedomWorks has facilitated Tea Party activists with guidance and resources, allowing for the growth of the movement that supports candidates like Kentucky's GOP Senate candidate Rand Paul and Nevada's GOP Senate candidate Sharron Angle. But Paul's and Angle's association with the Tea Party could be making their campaigns harder, Armey said, according to Politico. "Don't ask for more of what you ...
Hillary Clinton Says White House Will Sue Over Arizona Immigration Law Post Date: 2010-06-17 19:27:25 by Brian S

According to President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder, the Justice Department is currently in the process of deciding whether or not to file suit over Arizona's controversial immigration law, which Mr. Obama has called "misguided" and potentially discriminatory. According to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, however, the decision has already been made. "President Obama has spoken out against the law because he thinks that the federal government should be determining immigration policy," she said in an interview with an Ecuadorean television station flagged by The Right Scoop. "And the Justice Department, under his direction, will be bringing a ...

Olbermann leaves Daily Kos By: Andy Barr June 17, 2010 01:33 PM EDT Keith Olbermann announced Wednesday night that he will cease blogging for the liberal Daily Kos over a comment directed at the MSNBC hosts coverage. Olbermann and some of his MSNBC colleagues surprised their left-leaning fans on Tuesday with eviscerating critiques of President Barack Obamas Oval Office address on the oil spill spewing off the Gulf Coast. It was a great speech if you were on another planet for the last 57 days, Olbermann said of the presidents remarks, echoing similarly negative comments from fellow MSNBC hosts Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow. One commenter on the Daily ...

Lets face it, America misses George W. Bush. The left misses him because they much enjoyed putting every ounce of their failure and frustration on his shoulders. Conservatives miss the power and the sense that their President looked out for them. Those in the middle look at Mr. Obamas policies and lack of emotion and realize that GWB wasnt quite the demon he was portrayed to be by the left. For all of GWBs failures, and there were many, he always came across as a person that liked people. Barack Obama has a distinct dont touch me vibe. It is impossible to imagine a photo of President Obama like the above image of George W. Bush. The photo is ...

The top Republican gift-wrapped a gaffe about the oil spill and handed it to President Barack Obama on Thursday, ceding the GOP's advantage on a disaster that has plagued the administration for weeks and called its competence into question. Rep. Joe Barton (Texas), the senior GOP lawmaker on the House energy committee, apologized to BP and accused the White House of a "$20 billion shakedown" for forcing the oil company to set up a vast clean-up and compensation fund. Democrats, who have been reeling for weeks over the unstinting disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, seized on Barton's remarks to BP chief executive Tony Haward and swiftly turned the news cycle into one ...

06/17/10 01:46 PM ET A Republican lawmaker from a district affected by the oil spill called on Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) to step down as the ranking member of his committee. Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.), whose Pensacola district is among the most affected areas in the Gulf by the oil spill, condemned Barton for apologizing to BP CEO Tony Hayward during a committee meeting on Thursday. Mr. Bartons remarks are out of touch with this tragedy and I feel his comments call into question his judgment and ability to serve in a leadership on the Energy and Commerce Committee," Miller said in a statement. Voters also say 52 - 38 he is "confrontational," rather than "honest and refreshing." A total of 75 percent of New Jersey voters are "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied" with life in the Garden State, the worst satisfaction rating ever in New Jersey, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.
