Feds refuse to provide spill response plans for top oil companies drilling in Gulf

MOBILE, Ala. -- A month ago, as BP struggled to contain an oil spill that it estimated at 200,000 gallons a day, the Press-Register reported that the company's federal permit documents stated that it could handle a spill of 12.6 million gallons a day. BP's documents also said that it could skim 17 million gallons of oil a day; thus far it has skimmed just 2 million gallons in seven weeks. The documents -- BP's Regional Oil Spill Response Plan -- are riddled with inaccurate claims and errors, including an online address for an equipment supplier that instead links to an unrelated Japanese website. In May, the newspaper asked the Department of Interior and the U.S. Minerals ...

Hunt on for AWOL Afghan Soldiers in US

Hunt on for AWOL Afghan Soldiers in US Federal officials are searching for 17 Afghan soldiers who have gone AWOL from the Defense Language Institute at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Gary Emery, a spokesman for the 37th Training Wing at Lackland, said the men disappeared over the course of 18 months. The Afghan soldiers included officers and enlisted men who were learning English before going on to further training, including flight training. The 17 are now all identified on a bulletin released by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in Dallas, which also includes a black and white photo of each. The "BOLO," or "Be on the Lookout," bulletin states all the men ...

Obama Administration Blocks Clean-Up of Oil Spill by Louisiana and Foreign Allies By Imposing Red Tape
Post Date: 2010-06-18 16:41:18 by no gnu taxes

The Obama Administration recently used red tape to force Louisiana to stop using 16 barges that were cleaning up the Gulf of Mexico by sucking thousands of gallons of oil out of Louisiana’s oil-soaked waters. Earlier, it delayed the clean-up of the Gulf of Mexico by months, by blocking foreign crews from operating sophisticated clean-up vessels. The Jones Act bans foreign vessels and crews from working in U.S. waters, but it gives the president the authority to completely waive that ban if he wishes. Obama refused to lift the ban, even though American shippers who generally support the ban said they wouldn’t object to lifting it to fight the spill. As a result of the ban, the ...

Angle has run-in with reporter Posted: June 18th, 2010 01:33 PM ET From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney 72;72;72; (CNN) – Republican Sharron Angle has largely avoided interviews with local and national media outlets since capturing her party's Senate nomination two weeks ago, but the newly-minted candidate had a contentious run-in Thursday with a Las Vegas television reporter. KLAS reporter Nathan Baca asked Angle about a statement on her website that calls for "transitioning out" Social Security and Medicare programs. "Why do you want to eliminate [Social Security] for younger folks," he asked. Angle, who had just returned from a visit to Washington, ...

Fact Checking "Real Time With Bill Maher" by Elizabeth MacDonald It was clear to anyone roaming through the channels last week that the stupid shift was working overtime at the factory of nonsense otherwise known as the Real Time With Bill Maher show on HBO. Billowing out from behind the orotund self-regard and convivial asskissing on the season finale was an impenetrably dense haze of idiocy, whoppers, errors and doozies, turning your own personal TV into a spillcam of pluming mistakes. Missing in action for much of the night was the truth, chased away by the hemorrhoidal factitious rectitude that is and always will be the order of the night in the House of Maher. In the ...

Committee: BP has paid less than 12% of claims

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House Judiciary Committee says data it has collected shows that BP has paid less than 12 percent of claims submitted by people and businesses arising from the Gulf oil spill. The committee said in a statement Friday that only $71 million out of an estimated $600 million had been paid as of Tuesday. In addition, the panel said that BP didn't make any payments in the first two weeks following the explosion and oil spill. Michigan Democratic Rep. John Conyers said he's concerned that BP "is stiffing too many victims and shortchanging others." The committee said BP hasn't made a single payment for bodily injury or diminished home property value. ...

House-Senate Panel Broadens Audits of Fed

WASHINGTON — House and Senate negotiators agreed Thursday to broaden the scope of a new set of audits of the Federal Reserve by the Government Accountability Office to include transactions involving the Fed’s discount window and open market operations. But the Federal Reserve dodged attempts to extend Congressional review over its monetary policy decisions. The Senate had previously approved a provision that would require a government audit of the Federal Reserve’s emergency lending authority, a move that arose in response to the Fed’s actions in the 2008 financial crisis. But the House-Senate conference committee wanted to go further, subjecting the Fed to regular ...

Sarah Palin's Oil Regulation" Lies" [Full Thread]

Sarah Palin has been busted for so many lies in the past year and a half, it's become nearly impossible to keep track of them all. Whenever she opens her mouth, she simply cannot stop herself from engaging in duplicities, exaggerations and half-truths that not-so-coincidentally always distort the political record in her favor. It's a pathology. She did it again this week during a somewhat contentious interview with Bill O'Reilly in which she chastised her Fox News host out the gate: "I kind of have a big beef with you too though, Bill, if you don't acknowledge that President Obama is wrong on his call for a need for energy policy." Perhaps the biggest joke being fobbed by Palin ...

Democrats Make Case For Jones Act Waiver

A congressional hearing on foreign ships in the Gulf of Mexico turned into a full-scale attack on the Obama administration’s response to the crisis — led by the committee’s Democrats. Thursday’s hearing came as a growing chorus of critics has accused the Obama administration of unwisely turning away international help for the oil spill cleanup and failing to issue a temporary waiver of the protectionist Jones Act. The hearing came as Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-La.) criticized the administration for bureaucratic hurdles. Witnesses from the Coast Guard and Maritime Administration attempted to rebut the claims, but their assurances fell on deaf ears. (Video of the hearing.) ...

NEW ORLEANS – It is an overlooked danger in the oil spill crisis: The crude gushing from the well contains vast amounts of natural gas that could pose a serious threat to the Gulf of Mexico's fragile ecosystem. The oil emanating from the seafloor contains about 40 percent methane, compared with about 5 percent found in typical oil deposits, said John Kessler, a Texas A&M University oceanographer who is studying the impact of methane from the spill. That means huge quantities of methane have entered the Gulf, scientists say, potentially suffocating marine life and creating "dead zones" where oxygen is so depleted that nothing lives. "This is the most vigorous ...

June 17 (Bloomberg) -- Emergency-room visits from abuse of prescription and over-the-counter medicines doubled in the U.S. in four years, matching for the first time the number of overdoses of illegal drugs such as cocaine and heroin. Regulator-approved treatments were implicated in a record 1 million patients who sought help at hospital emergency departments in 2008, twice the number as in 2004, according to a study released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta. Overdoses from illicit drugs were unchanged, at 1 million emergency visits. The most hospitalizations were caused by painkillers, with visits more than doubling, and tranquilizers, with an 89 ...

WASHINGTON -- Amid rising heat over recent comments in which he referred to voters as the "unwashed," Sen. Johnny Isakson issued an apology Thursday, saying he meant no harm. "It was a poor choice of words," Isakson said in a statement Thursday. "I didn't mean anything derogatory by it, and I sincerely apologize." The apology came two days after Isakson, an incumbent who's up for re-election, made an off-the-cuff remark about a speech that Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle of Nevada gave to him and other Republican senators on Capitol Hill. "It wasn't the kind of speech you would give to the unwashed back home," Isakson said of ...

It's an election year and politics seems seep into everything like a viscous oil slick. Like a thick gooey slime, there are those who want to take advantage of a national tragedy for their political gain. Fox News' Brian Wilson yesterday published a story yesterday June 11 that was clearly meant to raise the national blood pressure. Wilson's story also paints an unfair picture of the US Coast Guard. The story leaves readers with an impression the Coast Guard is raising bureaucratic obstacles and actively blocking the use of advanced vessels and technologies because of a law called the Jones Act. In his story Wilson uses Joseph Carafano of the Heritage Foundation to raise the ...

Keeping up with the Jones Act [Full Thread]

As a self-proclaimed “citizen of the world,” President Obama should have welcomed rather than spurned international assistance to prevent BP’s underwater oil geyser from wrecking the Gulf Coast. But spurn, he did. Mr. Obama’s failure to waive the Jones Act still maintains a sea wall that blocks potentially helpful foreign ships from this tear-inducing mess. The 1920 Jones Act requires that vessels operating in American waters be built, owned and manned by Americans. Some U.S. ship owners love this protectionist measure. So do maritime labor unions. When it comes to confronting unions, Mr. Obama rarely crosses that line. On April 20, the Deepwater Horizon exploded, ...

Rep. Joe Barton Likes BP -- and the Company Likes Him Back with Cash

After BP Chief Executive Officer Tony Hayward had expressed his contrition to members of Congress for the ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, a long-time friend of the oil industry, Rep. Joe Barton (R- Texas), today issued an apology to Hayward for his harsh treatment at the hands of the White House. Barton, speaking at a congressional hearing, called the $20 billion escrow account set up by BP to pay for claims related to the spill, a "shakedown" on the part of the Obama administration. Individuals and political action committees associated with BP have donated $27,350 to Barton's political campaigns since the 1990 election cycle -- eighth among members of Congress, ...

Rep. Joe Barton (R-Tex.) walked back his "apology" (he didn't use the word) to BP, saying just now that "BP is responsible for this accident, should be held responsible" and "if anything I have said this morning has been misconstrued to an opposite effect, I want to apologize for that misconstruction." Nonetheless, the House GOP leadership of Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio), Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), and Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) put out a response to Barton -- released after his apology-about-an-apology -- making crystal clear that the GOP did not agree with his initial statement. "The oil spill in the Gulf is this nation’s largest natural disaster ...

The top Senate Republican campaign strategist promised Tuesday that reporters would have "complete access" to Sharron Angle, the GOP nominee in Nevada, "in a few weeks," but not now. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, explained Angle's silence since she won last week's primary in the Silver State by saying she needed to get "prepared" for her opponent in November, Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D). Angle has granted interviews only to conservative media outlets, while the Reid campaign has tried to define her as an out-of-the-mainstream conservative who supports abolishing popular federal ...

CAGW urges Obama to waive Jones Act and allow in European dredging companies

The premier taxpayer watchdog group in the US, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW), has urged President Obama to take a significant step toward resolving the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico by waiving the Jones Act, which prohibits foreign ships from carrying cargo and passengers between US ports. European countries including The Netherlands have offered their help in cleaning up the oil spill, but the Jones Act prohibits using foreign ships in the effort. “Americans have waited long enough for the Obama administration to show leadership and use all of its resources to effectively manage the environmental disaster that continues to unfold in the Gulf of Mexico,” said CAGW ...
