MOBILE, Ala. -- A month ago, as BP struggled to contain an oil spill that it estimated at 200,000 gallons a day, the Press-Register reported that the company's federal permit documents stated that it could handle a spill of 12.6 million gallons a day. BP's documents also said that it could skim 17 million gallons of oil a day; thus far it has skimmed just 2 million gallons in seven weeks. Amtrak's "City of New Orleans" train was en route to New Orleans from Chicago when it struck the vehicle at a crossing north of Independence, WDSU-TV of New Orleans reported. Hunt on for AWOL Afghan Soldiers in US Federal officials are searching for 17 Afghan soldiers who have gone AWOL from the Defense Language Institute at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Gary Emery, a spokesman for the 37th Training Wing at Lackland, said the men disappeared over the course of 18 months. The Afghan soldiers included officers and enlisted men who were learning English before going on to further training, including flight training. The 17 are now all identified on a bulletin released by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in Dallas, which also includes a black and white photo of each. The Obama Administration recently used red tape to force Louisiana to stop using 16 barges that were cleaning up the Gulf of Mexico by sucking thousands of gallons of oil out of Louisiana’s oil-soaked waters. Earlier, it delayed the clean-up of the Gulf of Mexico by months, by blocking foreign crews from operating sophisticated clean-up vessels. The Jones Act bans foreign vessels and crews from working in U.S. waters, but it gives the president the authority to completely waive that ban if he wishes. WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House Judiciary Committee says data it has collected shows that BP has paid less than 12 percent of claims submitted by people and businesses arising from the Gulf oil spill. The committee said in a statement Friday that only $71 million out of an estimated $600 million had been paid as of Tuesday. Sarah Palin has been busted for so many lies in the past year and a half, it's become nearly impossible to keep track of them all. Whenever she opens her mouth, she simply cannot stop herself from engaging in duplicities, exaggerations and half-truths that not-so-coincidentally always distort the political record in her favor. It's a pathology.
