LAKEHURST -- The Lakehurst section of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is on lockdown today but base officials are not yet saying what led to the locked gates. Senior Airman David Carbajal said "several simultaneous incidents" prompted the lockdown at 9:15 a.m. He said he did not know what those incidents were. Carbajal said the incidents did not involve a shooter and no one has been shot, but he could not confirm whether there were reports of shots fired. Thuggery is unattractive. Ineffective thuggery even more so. Which may be one reason so many Americans have been reacting negatively to the response of Barack Obama and his administration to BP's Gulf oil spill. Take Interior Secretary Ken Salazar's remark that he would keep his "boot on the neck" of BP, which brings to mind George Orwell's definition of totalitarianism as "a boot stamping on a human face -- forever." Except that Salazar's boot hasn't gotten much in the way of results yet. (AP) -- A thick plume of smoke blotted out the blue sky north of Flagstaff on Sunday afternoon as a second wildfire moved through the area, forcing the evacuation of additional homes and an animal shelter. Coconino County authorities said residents of the Timberline Estates, Wupatki Trails and Fernwood neighborhoods were being asked to leave their homes.
