Asian Carp Caught Near Lake Michigan: 'Carp Wars' Just Got Hotter

The discovery of a 19-pound Asian carp in a lake outside Chicago is the most dramatic evidence yet that the voracious, invasive species is swimming past an electric "fence" and heading for Lake Michigan. The carp, reportedly caught by commercial fishermen on Tuesday, is likely to intensify the "carp wars" that have been raging for most of this year between Illinois and other Great Lakes states over what should be done – and how soon – to stop the fish from reaching Lake Michigan. The one found this week in Lake Calumet is about six miles away, according to an Associated Press report. In December, six Great Lakes states, led by Michigan, sued Illinois to ...

Morning Shows Skip Sexual Assault Charge Against Al Gore By Scott Whitlock (Bio | Archive) Thu, 06/24/2010 - 11:34 ET All three morning shows on Thursday ignored allegations of "unwanted sexual contact" by Al Gore against a woman in 2006. This is despite the fact that the claim was reported by the AP, the New York Times and the Washington Post. CBS's Early Show, NBC's Today and ABC's Good Morning America failed to mention the charges made by an Oregon massage therapist that Gore tried to have sex with her. Yet, on June 2, after Al and Tipper Gore announced their divorce, ABC reporter Claire Shipman wondered if the separation meant that "storybook endings" ...

For Obama, the Hits Just Keep on Coming

The latest WSJ/NBC News poll brought more bad news for President Obama and the Democrats. For the first time in his presidency, more Americans disapprove of Obama (48%) than approve of him (45%), according to the poll. Meanwhile, 62% say the U.S. is heading in the wrong direction, the highest level since before the 2008 elections, and just 40% give him positive ratings on his "ability to handle a crisis," down from 51% in January. As Henry and I discuss in the accompanying video, several factors account for Obama's precipitous drop in the polls, including: It's the Economy Stupid: Rightly or not, presidents are viewed as being in control of the economy. With ...

Rand Paul supports amendment to deny citizenship to children of illegals By Michael O'Brien - 06/24/10 11:55 AM ET Kentucky GOP Senate candidate Rand Paul said Thursday he would support amending the Constitution to deny automatic citizenship to children born in the United States. Paul, the libertarian Republican nominee for the Senate who's also the son of Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), said courts should review the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States," to determine whether or not it should apply to the children of illegal immigrants. If those court challenges fail, Paul said in an interview ...

Texas Dems Grapple With Their Own Alvin Greene By Hilary Hylton / Austin Sunday, Jun. 20, 2010 Kesha Rogers, winner of the U.S. Democratic Party primary election in Texas's 22nd congressional district South Carolina's unexpected Democratic nominee for the US Senate, mystery man Alvin Greene, says he wants to play golf with Barack Obama. But in Texas, another surprise Democratic primary winner, congressional nominee Kesha Rogers, wants to impeach the President. So while South Carolina party officials are still unsure of what to do about Greene's success at the ballot box, Texas Democrats have no such reservations — they wasted little time in casting Rogers into exile and ...

May Durable Orders Fall, First Time In 6 Months | Respond to Editor | Print By Greg Robb WASHINGTON--Orders for U.S.-made durable goods sank in May, falling 1.1% on weaker demand for airplanes, steel and communications equipment, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. The decrease was not as severe as the expected 1.4% drop forecast by economists surveyed by MarketWatch. It is the first decline in total orders in the last six months and the largest since August 2009. The underlying report was not as weak as the headline suggests. Excluding aircraft, orders rose 0.9%. Shipments fell 0.4% in May, and were up 0.4% excluding transportation goods. Inventories rose 0.8%.

Worry Underwater: Oxygen Levels Drop as Oil Continues to Flow

Evidence of marine biologists' doomsday scenario thrashes in the Gulf waters as sharks crowd into shallow waters. Marine biologists say the sea animals flee the spill zone the way others would flee a forest fire. With thousands of gallons of oil contaminating their natural habitats, marine creatures press into oil-free waters. "Their habitat is shrinking, tens of thousands of square miles are affected, and animals moving away from them," said Mobi Salangi, director of the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies. "There are changes in food, the food they eat and their prey." Plumes of dense oil in shallow waters, up to 50 feet below the surface, have sucked up oxygen. ...

AP Check: Shoddy Disposal Work Mars Oil Cleanup

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (AP) -- A leaky truck filled with oil-stained sand and absorbent boom soaked in crude pulls away from the beach, leaving tar balls in a public parking lot and a messy trail of sand and water on the main beach road. A few miles away, brown liquid drips out of a disposal bin filled with polluted sand. BP PLC's work to clean up the mess from the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history already has generated more than 1,300 tons of solid waste, and companies it hired to dispose of the material say debris is being handled professionally and carefully. A spot check of several container sites by The Associated Press, however, found that's not always the case. Along ...

Some Oil Spill Events From Thursday, June 24, 2010

A summary of events Thursday, June 24, Day 65 of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill that began with the April 20 explosion and fire on the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, owned by Transocean Ltd. and leased by BP PLC, which is in charge of cleanup and containment. The blast killed 11 workers. Since then, oil has been pouring into the Gulf from a blown-out undersea well. CAP A cap was back in place on BP's broken oil well after a deep-sea blunder forced crews to temporarily remove what has been the most effective method so far for containing some of the massive Gulf of Mexico spill. Engineers using remote-controlled submarines repositioned the cap late Wednesday after it had been off for ...

Nancy Pelosi Predicts House GOP Majority

This is just too good. Nancy Pelosi is asking supporters to donate NOW to help prevent "subpoenas and investigations" resulting from a GOP majority. I'll say that again: Pelosi sees a House GOP majority coming at her fast, and she is in full-panic mode. Mama Pelosi is just trying to protect Barack Obama, but could she also be personally concerned? Remember the Eric Massa scandal? Remember Air Pelosi and the abuse of her air force plane - her family riding - without her, in fact without anyone from the House traveling? How about Nancy's own personal 'torture' scandal...calling the CIA liars even though tapes clearly show she is the liar. How about the "dirty ...

Trial lawyers, unions, loyal Democrats helping fund Crist in U.S. Senate race By Steve Bousquet, Times/Herald Tallahassee Bureau In Print: Thursday, June 24, 2010 TALLAHASSEE — By bolting from the Republican Party, Gov. Charlie Crist has one place left to raise big money in his race for the U.S. Senate: Democrats. A governor who once courted conservatives by calling himself a "Jeb Bush Republican" is getting help from liberal trial lawyers, union activists and even elected Democrats, who are shunning their party's Senate hopefuls, wealthy Palm Beach businessman Jeff Greene and U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek of Miami. Crist is now an independent, with no party to pay ...

The anklebiters in Alaska have attacked Sarah Palin on a number of ridiculous grounds, many of which we have chronicled here at C4P. For example, see here and here. One of the more common accusations has been that somehow Governor Palin's reliance on Todd Palin as a close advisor was illegal or unethical. Indeed, one of the memes the LSM made is that Todd Palin was the "shadow Governor" or something simply because he provided input and guidance to his wife. Of course, the same lunatics making the accusation never questioned Hillary Clinton's close advisory relationship with President (and Governor) Clinton, and completely ignores the policy role Michelle Obama currently ...

American Public Tiring Of Obama’s Incompetence, Arrogance

Obama’s dereliction of duty regarding expeditiously and appropriately responding to the Gulf oil spill is now being compensated for by strong-arm threats from him and other Administration officials. The American public, including much of his fawning liberal support base, find these to be offensive, unwarranted and not constructive. They are repulsed by his initial actions of sending lawyers through Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate legal infractions rather than marshalling clean-up and stop-up crews. His most recent response was to form a committee filled with his appointees to deal with the spill two months after it occurred. And who are the members of it? Oil industry ...

BP has replaced the containment cap that was accidentally damaged by a robotic sub Wednesday. BP engineers also cut off a portion of damaged, which is expected to allow a greater amount of oil to be captured. Engineers are making adjustments to maximize the flow of oil to the surface ship which is acting as a collection point. the tool to collect as much oil as possible from the well. Engineers have employed a rubber gasket in the hope that is will create a seal on the extraction piping. Read more>>

LOS ANGELES — The 20-year-old college student was working as a youth minister with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles when he revealed a long-buried secret to church authorities: He had been molested by a priest for several years, beginning when the cleric was first a youth minister and then a seminarian. The young man met with church officials, who promised the priest would never work around children again. Sixteen years later, the man — now a father of two — typed the Rev. Jeffrey Newell's name into a computer and was stunned by the results: Newell was still a priest, serving in the Diocese of Tijuana. His MySpace page lists a half-dozen teenage boys as his friends and ...

Americans are more pessimistic about the state of the country and less confident in President Barack Obama's leadership than at any point since Mr. Obama entered the White House, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll. The survey also shows grave and growing concerns about the Gulf oil spill, with overwhelming majorities of adults favoring stronger regulation of the oil industry and believing that the spill will affect the nation's economy and environment. Sixty-two percent of adults in the survey feel the country is on the wrong track, the highest level since before the 2008 election. Just one-third think the economy will get better over the next year, a 7-point ...

As if BP didn’t have enough trouble already, a complication in their efforts to contain the Gulf oil spill has hit a snag which complicates their dilemma. The containment cap which has been only partially successful in holding back the flow of oil, has now been removed. Apparently, a robot used in the containment attempt, collided with a venting system on Wednesday, forcing the removal of the cap that had been diverting a portion of the flow to a vessel above, containing some of the crude. Also Wednesday, Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen reported that two people associated with the spill cleanup effort, have died. Read more>>

....Senator Barack Obama was equally dismissive. He had staked his campaign in part on the purity of his opposition to the war. When his turn came, Obama lectured Petraeus on the futility of his mission, using up the full seven minutes allocated to him and giving the general no chance to respond. “We have now set the bar so low,” said Obama, “that modest improvement in what was a completely chaotic situation … is considered success. And it’s not. This continues to be a disastrous foreign-policy mistake.”

For months now, Jeb Bush has been listening as President Obama blasts his older brother's administration for the battered economy, budget deficits and even the lax oversight of oil wells. "It's kind of like a kid coming to school saying, "The dog ate my homework," Mr. Bush, this state's former governor, said over lunch last week at the Biltmore Hotel. "It's childish. This is what children do until they mature. They don't accept responsibility." In fact, instead of constantly bashing the 43rd president, Mr. Bush offered, perhaps Mr. Obama could learn something from him, especially when it comes to ignoring the Washington chatter. "This ...
