Miles of Oil and No Government Action in Sight! Post Date: 2010-06-30 12:42:08 by no gnu taxes

Miles of oil slicks just like this and not a skimmer in sight. Why? Where is the U.S. government? Do we need to remind Obama that under federal law it is HIS primary responsibility to contain and clean up the spill? Meanwhile, an extensive report from the New Orleans Times Picayune details how few skimming boats are working on the spill: Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the national incident commander for the oil spill, acknowledged recently that Skimmers are our critical mass right now. We need to put those wherever we can get them. And we want to get them from wherever they are available.
According to the latest numbers from BP, 433 vessels are collecting oil in ...

Obama Slams Republican 'Apology' To BP Post Date: 2010-06-30 12:18:02 by Brian S

US President Barack Obama lampooned Republicans over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill Wednesday, seeking to turn a disaster that has been a political liability for him into a political weapon. Obama cited a gaffe by a leading Republican lawmaker who said the US government's hardline tactics were a "tragedy" for BP, to lambast the opposition party as the pace heats up ahead of November's mid-term elections. He said some Republicans opposed raising the legal cap on liabilities BP must pay to clean-up America's worst environmental disaster and a 20 billion dollar BP escrow compensation fund for businesses victimized by it. "The top Republican on the energy committee ...

An FBI Bungle? BY Gabriel Schoenfeld June 30, 2010 8:45 AM What explains the timing of the bust of the Russian spy ring just four days after Barack Obama's "cheeseburger summit" with Dmitry Medvedev? Many Russian officials and analysts, reports the Wall Street Journal, said they presumed that hawkish elements within the U.S. government had engineered and timed the arrests to embarrass President Obama and undermine the reset that the American president had set in motion. Are the Russians right? American officials have thus far explained the timing by pointing to the possibility that one of the alleged spies, Anna Chapman, was planning ...

More Lack of Leadership By the Usurper Kenyan -- Red Tape Keeps Marsh Cleanup On Hold Post Date: 2010-06-30 12:08:55 by no gnu taxes

At a lab on Grand Isle, La., at the edge of Barataria Bay, biologists hoping to help save the oil-soiled marshlands are at the ready with a vat containing 30,000 gallons of homegrown oil-eating bacteria. But its been weeks since the oil started washing up here, and still they await final clearance to begin work. Its frustrating for the scientists, who plan to spray large sections of the soiled marsh with this microbial stew consisting of nutrients and three naturally occurring bacteria that eat oil to help rid the fragile ecosystem of toxic oil. This approach known as bioremediation is effective, especially if it is done soon after the oiling, they ...

GRAND ISLE, La. (AP) -- Rough seas generated by Hurricane Alex pushed more oil from the massive spill onto Gulf coast beaches as cleanup vessels were sidelined by the far-away storm's ripple effects. The hurricane was churning coastal waters across the oil-affected region on the Gulf of Mexico. Waves as high as 6 feet and winds over 25 mph were forecast through Thursday just off shore from the Mississippi Delta in Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle. In Louisiana, the storm pushed an oil patch toward Grand Isle and uninhabited Elmer's Island, dumping tar balls as big as apples on the beach. "The sad thing is that it's been about three weeks since we had any big oil come ...

U.S. Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan, parrying lawmakers questions with humor and a command of the law, picked up some qualified support from a leading Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee that is reviewing her nomination. Your stock really went up with me, South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham told Kagan when she praised Miguel Estrada, a lawyer whose appeals court nomination by Republican President George W. Bush was blocked by Senate Democrats. Kagan and Estrada were law school classmates. In her first day answering questions before the Senate panel, Kagan spiced up a discussion of constitutional law with quips about personal grooming and religion. She ...
Pa. Daily Blames State Budget Crisis On Bush Post Date: 2010-06-30 11:03:49 by no gnu taxes

The Delaware County Daily Times in suburban Philadelphia, today, squarely placed the blame on Harrisburg's inability to pass a budget on the shoulders of George W. Bush. It said: Of course, it doesnt help that the country was plunged into economic disaster by the previous administration. When George W. Bush took office in 2001, he inherited a budget surplus of more than $200 billion. In 2009, he left the country with a $1 trillion deficit and projected deficits of $8 trillion or more. The Times' reasoning appears to be if that if Washington didn't have such fiscal headaches they'd be able to shovel more money to Pennsylvania and nobody would be upset about state ...

Those close to House Minority Whip Eric Cantor don't deny his ambitions, but even they are uncertain of his next move. House Minority Whip Eric Cantor has asked the ethics committee to greenlight a national book tour this August for a new GOP manifesto hes co-authoring with two younger members of Congress, according to sources familiar with the situation. This is classic Cantor: a hyperambitious move to publish and push ideas he thinks will help rebrand the GOP, on his terms and not necessarily those of his boss, Minority Leader John Boehner. ...

Treachery In The Gulf By Robbi Skye Campbell 6-29-10 What has happened in the Gulf of Mexico was not by accident. It was most likely a design to support an agenda. What that agenda is we do not know exactly but I will try to connect the dots. We may soon know the true extent of its nature by the "solutions" our government imposes on the people in the Gulf area. There are some major problems: The Obama administration allowed BP to drill at an unstable site (highly over pressured) in 5,000 feet of water; BP CEO Tony Hayward dumped his BP stock 2 months before the spill; The well was kicking since they drilled into the production zone, so the drilling fluid or mud was ...

When the Supreme Court extended the individual right to own a gun Monday, it handed Second Amendment advocates many of whom are at home in the GOP one of their most significant legal victories ever. But who won the day in politics? The Democrats. For them, the courts groundbreaking decision couldnt have been more beneficial to the cause in November. Now, Democratic candidates across the map figure they have one less issue to worry about on the campaign trail. And they wont have to defend Republican attacks over gun rights and an angry, energized base of gun owners. It removes guns as a political issue because everyone now agrees that the ...

The auto rebound is a myth By Chris Isidore, senior writerJune 29, 2010: 10:19 AM ET NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The auto industry appears to be turning the corner. But the American consumer has yet to come along for the ride. Overall U.S. auto sales have rebounded nicely, up 17% through the first five months of the year. Auto companies will announce their sales for June on Thursday and analysts expect another increase from a year ago. Even though auto sales are up this year, it's mostly due to businesses buying cars. Consumers still aren't flocking to dealerships. But much of the improvement has been due to a 38% jump in fleet sales to businesses, such as rental car companies. ...
