BP plans to cut payments to some 40,000 oil-spill claimants, potentially making life more difficult for individuals and businesses affected by the Gulf oil spill, a Louisiana official has said. The Associated Press reports that Louisiana's secretary for children and family services, Kristy Nichols, found "a significant cut in daily payments" during a recent review of claims against BP, which appears to be related to incomplete forms. In a letter to Ken Feinberg, the federal administrator of the oil spill claims process, Nichols wrote that it was "rash" of BP to cut payments to 40,000 of the 99,000 claims filed so far.Nichols wrote:It is rash for BP to make this ...

Its hard to fathom how supposedly sophisticated, intelligent New Yorkers have turned into such saps. Its not Frank Sinatras New York anymore. It appears to be populated by girly-men and women, more concerned with political correctness than the potential for having a thirteen-storey terrorist support facility at the heart of the city, where adherents to a medieval cult slaughtered three thousand on American soil. A radical Mullah, Feisal Abdul Rauf, with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas and the radical Islamo-Fascist Palestinian movement, and one of the chief sponsors of the Gaza flotilla, attempting to break the embargo of military stores and munitions bound for the ...

From the outside, Jerry Erwin's home in the northwestern US state of Oregon is a nondescript house with a manicured front lawn and little to differentiate it from those of his neighbors. But tucked away out of sight in his backyard are the signs of his preparations for doomsday, a catastrophic societal collapse that Erwin, 45, now believes is likely within his lifetime. "I've got, under an awning, stacks of firewood, rain catching in barrels, I've got a shed with barbed concertina wire, like the military uses," he told AFP. He and his wife also have also stockpiled thousands of rounds of ammunition and enough food for about six months. "Several years ago I ...
Oil Unleashed Temporarily In Attempt To Contain It Post Date: 2010-07-10 19:57:32 by Brian S

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Robotic submarines working a mile underwater removed a leaking cap from the gushing Gulf oil well Saturday, starting a painful trade-off: Millions more gallons of crude will flow freely into the sea for at least two days until a new seal can be mounted to capture all of it. There's no guarantee for such a delicate operation almost a mile below the water's surface, officials said, and the permanent fix of plugging the well from the bottom remains slated for mid-August. "It's not just going to be, you put the cap on, it's done. It's not like putting a cap on a tube of toothpaste," Coast Guard spokesman Capt. James McPherson said. Robotic ...

BOSTON (AP) -- Governors hamstrung by the sluggish economic rebound in their states and bound to balance their own budgets are pressing anew for Washington to step up with more help, some say even if it means adding to the nation's red ink. Republicans and Democrats alike wrestled with how to capitalize on a fledgling rebound as they talked dollars and sense at their summer meeting just days into a new state budget year and as the economy shapes dozens of gubernatorial races across the country. "All states still are facing tough fiscal situations even though I do believe we're in recovery," said West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, a Democrat who's taking over as chairman ...

Police in Southern California say officers shot and killed a 15-year-old suspected of driving a stolen vehicle. Bakersfield police began pursuing the 2001 Acura around 9:20 p.m. Friday. They say the driver stopped, but then backed into a patrol car after being approached by two officers. The officers opened fire multiple times, striking the teen. Police say he was pronounced dead at Kern Medical Center. The Kern County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Traveon John Avila. A 17-year-old passenger was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, auto theft and participation in a criminal street gang. Police say a third person in the vehicle managed to escape. Independents Show Disgust With Obama And Demarxists. Post Date: 2010-07-10 08:26:09 by Skip MacLure

How times have changed. Fifty six percent of voters, identifying themselves as independents, voted to put Barack Hussein Obama in the Presidency. Whether caught up in the glitz and glitter of a campaign choreographed like a Radio City music hall performance, or the historical moment of voting for a black man for President
some certainly voting for Obama thereby willing away the ghosts of slavery past and the much flacked, (at least by the statist press) so-called white guilt. Other independents who would normally tend towards voting on the right, disgusted by the dismal performance of George Bush and the Republicans, joined the exodus of many Republicans and self-identified ...

Republican Reps. Darrell Issa of California, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida and Chris Smith of New Jersey are calling for a probe to investigate whether Obama administration officials are violating federal law by using taxpayer money to lobby for a new constitution in Kenya that supports and legalizes abortion. The U.S. is spending taxpayer money on Kenyas constitutional referendum, Issa told The Daily Caller. The underlying concern is that U.S. funds and efforts are being used to interfere in Kenyas internal debate over abortion, which is part of the debate over the new constitution. There is evidence that U.S. funds are supporting groups and events with a ...
Obama Admin To Defend Gay Marriage Ban Post Date: 2010-07-09 20:48:02 by Brian S

The gay rights law group that convinced a federal district court judge Thursday to strike down a federal ban on gay marriage has told the New York Times they "fully expect" the Justice Department to appeal the decision -- a move that could shatter Obama's image in the gay community and cost his party millions of dollars in donations from gay donors. "Lawyers on various sides of the issue said it was a certainty that the government will appeal and likely that the cases will reach the Supreme Court," Politico added Friday. Such an appeal would be filed by the Obama-appointed US Attorney Carmen Milagros Ortiz, who was confirmed last November by the Senate. In an ...
Gulf Oil Leak Could Be Capped By Monday: Official Post Date: 2010-07-09 20:43:35 by Brian S

Efforts to place a new containment cap over the gushing Gulf of Mexico oil well could effectively stop the disastrous spill as early as Monday, a US official said Friday. Admiral Thad Allen, who oversees the government's spill response, said on day 81 of the disaster that an operation to swap in the new cap could begin Saturday and the entire process would take "about three to four days." If successful, the new cap could capture all of the crude spilling into the Gulf and allow it to siphoned up to container vessels on the surface, in effect halting the devastating spill of crude into the sea that has imperiled fragile coastlines and wildlife across the Gulf Coast. The ...

(07-09) 14:40 PDT Kansas City, Mo. (AP) -- The head of the nation's largest and oldest civil rights organization, fearing a loss of momentum since the 2008 election, plans to use the group's annual convention to get people "off the couch" and re-energized to fight back against a tea party movement that opposes much of President Barack Obama's agenda. The NAACP convention, set to start Saturday, also will focus on education and the mounting jobs losses that have disproportionately affected minorities. Headliners will include First Lady Michelle Obama and the Revs. Jesse L. Jackson and Al Sharpton. "We have to close the enthusiasm gap and remind people that the ...

LAS CRUCES, N.M. Investigators have provided disturbing new details about the case of a father accused of teaching his 6-year-old boy how to build and blow up homemade bombs out of items such as empty milk jugs and gunpowder. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives supervisor Brent Quinn said the father's creations one of which was recovered from his Las Cruces home Thursday and disarmed by bomb squad robots were nothing short of "improvised explosive devices." "Some people look at it as just making 'fireworks,'" he said. "Obviously, it isn't that simple." Anthony Stromberg, a 44-year-old convicted felon, allegedly ...

(07-09) 17:18 PDT Boring, Ore. "We had to respond," said Detective Jim Strovink of the Clackamas County sheriff's office. An officer hiding in the shrubbery around her rural home jolted the frail woman with a stun gun Thursday afternoon, and she collapsed unconscious. She died soon after in the hospital. Carly Fiorina, the former head of Hewlett-Packard Co., faces a wall of opposition from her Silicon Valley peers as she campaigns to win one of Californias U.S. Senate seats. Her victory in the Republican primary last week puts Fiorina up against Democrat incumbent Barbara Boxer, a senator since 1993. Boxer has the financial support of local executives, including Cisco Systems Inc.s John Chambers, Oracle Corp.s Larry Ellison, Netflix Inc.s Reed Hastings, and John Doerr from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Fiorinas inability to win the backing of technology leaders contrasts with EBay Inc.s former chief, Meg Whitman, whos racking up funding ...

The Raytown farmer who posted a sign on a semi-truck trailer accusing Democrats of being the Party of Parasites received more than $1 million in federal crop subsidies since 1995. But David Jungerman says the payouts dont contradict the sign he put up in a corn field in Bates County along U.S. 71 Highway. Thats just my money coming back to me, Jungerman, 72, said Monday. I pay a lot in taxes. Im not a parasite. After a story about Jungermans trailer ran in Sundays Star, however, some readers called him a hypocrite for criticizing others for getting government help while taking government subsidies paid for by taxpayers. ...

Newt Gingrich visited Columbia and Charleston today for a pair of fundraisers -- his second visit to South Carolina since the spring. Is he preparing a run for President 2012? I think so. I know that a lot of the readers of this blog aren't excited about Gingrich, but I am. Here's why: Gingrich is the ONLY Washington political leader in my lifetime who actually managed to reduce federal government spending. When Gingrich became speaker, federal spending was 22.4% of GDP. When he left, it was 18.4% of GDP. It was a magnificent accomplishment. Yes, Clinton deserves some credit too. After two failed years in office, Clinton decided to go along with Gingrich in removing welfare from ...

As any professional investigator will tell you, if youve got overwhelming forensic evidence, you dont need to demonstrate motive. I no longer care whether Obama is a closet advocate of the Cloward-Piven strategy, knowingly creating crises in order to expand the reach of the state, or whether hes just a monumental idiot whose dreams of big government are immune to empirical analysis. His DNA and fingerprints are all over our nations current economic and foreign policy mess, and he needs to go. The bill of indictment is long; here are just a handful of material items: 1) Obama has encouraged and signed into law several measures that have taken the deficit to ...
New Gallup Poll Shows Independants Shifting towards the GOP like a Tsunami Post Date: 2010-07-09 15:58:03 by no gnu taxes

After an Independence Day holiday weekend, it's time to focus on another declaration of independence that is gaining converts across the country. Independent voters are the largest and fastest-growing segment of the electorate. They determine who wins and loses elections, but independents too often get ignored in the narrow partisan analysis of American politics. It's time for that to change -- and in the run-up to the midterm elections I'll be writing regular columns for CNN.com on the state of independents. The current snapshot has a clear message: Democrats should be afraid, very afraid. A new Gallup Poll shows that independent voters are leaning decisively toward ...

'Hollywood Accounting' Losing In The Courts from the math-is-hard dept If you follow the entertainment business at all, you're probably well aware of "Hollywood accounting," whereby very, very, very few entertainment products are technically "profitable," even as they earn studios millions of dollars. A couple months ago, the Planet Money folks did a great episode explaining how this works in very simple terms. The really, really, really simplified version is that Hollywood sets up a separate corporation for each movie with the intent that this corporation will take on losses. The studio then charges the "film corporation" a huge fee (which creates ...

Obama is on the campaign trail this week. After a recent swing in California for Barbara Boxer, who later began to slide downward in the polls, he went off to help Robin Carnahan in Missouri who had to cut the top price ticket at the fundraiser Obama headlined from $250 to $99. Carnahan is behind in every recent poll against Roy Blunt. Next, Obama was off to help Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in Las Vegas, a city which hasn't been as welcoming as it might considering how he repeatedly told people not to go there and spend money. The editorial in the Las Vegas Review Journal pointed out that the current unemployment rate in the city is 14% and sent this message to Obama:"Your ...

Just as he's ramping up his effort to keep Congress in Democratic hands, Lisa Mascaro reports that President Obama is finding new resistance to his policies from his own caucus on Capitol Hill. From her story today: For the last year and a half, on issues including healthcare, financial regulation and climate change, Democrats in Congress have bent for President Obama. Liberals swallowed hard to accept compromises that fell short of their long-sought goals, and moderates cast tough votes that now threaten their reelection prospects as voters revolt against government overreach. Then, last week, the president asked them to bend yet again -- this time to approve more money for his ...
