Bush Interior Chiefs: No One Expected Major Spill Post Date: 2010-07-20 17:11:48 by Brian S

Two former Interior secretaries told Congress Tuesday they did not anticipate an accident as large as the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. But Gale Norton and Dirk Kempthorne say no one else did either including members of Congress who are now blaming the Bush administration for failing to prevent the tragedy. Kempthorne, who served as Interior secretary from 2006 to January 2009, while George W. Bush was president, said he did not recall being asked at his confirmation hearing or in later congressional testimony about major oil spills. In fact, Kempthorne said, the opposite occurred. In testimony before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, he recalled being pointedly asked ...
July 29 'Civil Disobedience' Planned Against Arizona Immigration Law Post Date: 2010-07-20 17:08:51 by Brian S

PHOENIX - Groups opposed to Arizona's tough new immigration law are planning some "civil disobedience" on July 29, the day the legislation takes effect. The leaders of the groups say they'll hold a candlelight vigil at the state Capitol in downtown Phoenix, march to a nearby church at 4:30 a.m. for a nondenominational service and then march to the federal courthouse in Phoenix. They declined to describe what the "civil disobedience" would be, but emphasized it will be nonviolent. Alfredo Gutierrez, organizer with the group Somos America, characterizes the protests as acts of defiance and hope for the Hispanic community. The new law faces seven legal ...

(07-20) 13:38 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) -- Pushing toward an election-year Supreme Court confirmation vote, a polarized Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday approved Elena Kagan to be the fourth female justice. Just one Republican joined Democrats to approve Kagan's nomination and send it to the full Senate, where she's expected to win confirmation within weeks. "Elena Kagan will be confirmed," predicted Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the Judiciary chairman. "She will go on the U.S. Supreme Court." Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., broke with his party to cast the sole GOP "yes" vote on President Obama's nominee to succeed Justice John Paul Stevens, who retired ...

The New Black Panther Party claims to believe in nonviolence, but a song performed by Shabazz's group, Coup DaTa, in 2004 includes descriptions of violent attacks against police as well as ...
Farmer's wife says fired USDA official helped save their land Post Date: 2010-07-20 15:37:45 by go65

The wife of the white farmer allegedly discriminated against by the USDA's rural development director for Georgia said Shirley Sherrod "kept us out of bankruptcy." Eloise Spooner, 82, awoke Tuesday to discover that Sherrod had lost her job after videotaped comments she made in March at a local NAACP banquet surfaced on the web. Sherrod, who is black, told the crowd she didn't do everything she could to help a white farmer whom she said was condescending when he came to her for aid. "What he didn't know while he was taking all that time trying to show me he was superior to me was, I was trying to decide just how much help I was going to give him," Sherrod ...

THE stunned black dad of a newborn, WHITE, baby girl declared yesterday "I'm sure she's my kid ... I just don't know why she's BLONDE." British Nmachi Ihegboro has amazed genetics experts who say the little girl is NOT an albino. Dad Ben, 44, a customer services adviser, admitted: "We both just sat there after the birth staring at her." Mum Angela, 35, of Woolwich, South London, beamed as she said: "She's beautiful - a miracle baby." Ben told yesterday how he was so shocked when Nmachi was born, he even joked: "Is she MINE?" He added: "Actually, the first thing I did was look at her and say, 'What the ...
It's ACORN redux: Did Breitbart mislead on purpose, or was he duped? Post Date: 2010-07-20 14:09:17 by go65

You'll recall when the ACORN pimp hoax unraveled earlier this year, Breitbart suddenly claimed ignorance. Despite the fact that he'd used his Washington Times column in 2009 to push the phony pimp angle hard, this winter Breitbart wanted everyone to know he actually had no idea what was on the heavily-edited ACORN tapes and that James O'Keefe had mislead him into thinking he'd walked into ACORN offices dressed as a pimp. So despite the fact that Breitbart had championed the ACORN tapes for months and personally vouched for their contents (he'd told "the truth"), when the hoax crumbled Breitbart changed his tune and claimed he didn't know what was on the ...
Breitbart's Sherrod/NAACP story disintegrates Post Date: 2010-07-20 13:57:29 by go65

Yesterday, Andrew Breitbart released heavily-edited video of a speech that Shirley Sherrod, then-USDA Georgia Director of Rural Development gave at the NAACP Freedom Fund dinner in Georgia this year. Breitbart writes that in the video, "this federally appointed executive bureaucrat lays out in stark detail, that her federal duties are managed through the prism of race and class distinctions." But Breitbart's suggestion that Sherrod was describing actions that she recently took as an Obama administration official is clearly false. In an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Sherrod said that her comments had been taken out of context, and that the story she had ...

Breitbart hits NAACP with promised video of racism by Ed Morrissey The NAACP is about to learn one of the most basic of all lessons in life those who live in glass houses should avoid provoking a stone-throwing war. After the civil-rights organization threatened to issue a condemnation of Tea Party activism by equating it with racism (a position from which they ultimately retreated), Andrew Breitbart announced that he would publish at least one video of the NAACP itself cheering racism. Breitbart delivers on that promise today at Big Government, showing USDA official Shirley Sherrod explain to an appreciative NAACP audience in July 2009 how she deliberately withheld information ...

PRINCETON, NJ -- In the same week the U.S. Senate passed a major financial reform bill touted as reining in Wall Street, Democrats pulled ahead of Republicans, 49% to 43%, in voters' generic ballot preferences for the 2010 congressional elections. The Democrats' six-point advantage in Gallup Daily interviewing from July 12-18 represents the first statistically significant lead for that party's candidates since Gallup began weekly tracking of this measure in March. "The 51% of Republicans saying they are "very enthusiastic" about voting this fall is up from 40% the week prior, and is the highest since early April -- shortly after passage of healthcare ...

Idaho GOP Reshaped By Spasm Of Tea-Party Passion, Anti-Fed Outrage Post Date: 2010-07-20 11:26:53 by Brian S

BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Three times since 2000, Republican Rod Beck failed in his bid to rejoin the state Senate, defeated by primary election rivals he insists didn't support party ideals. So Beck opted to change Idaho's GOP from within. At the state Republican convention last month, he got his big chance. Joined by tea party members, Ron Paul disciples and old-guard conservatives, Beck strode into the three-day confab in Idaho Falls amid a swelling national tide of frustration with Washington, D.C., magnified by Idaho's already rightist tilt. When it was over, a majority of the 500 delegates had transformed their platform with a spasm of anti-fed outrage - and anger at ...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A black employee who resigned from the Agriculture Department over racially charged comments at a Georgia NAACP meeting says her remarks are being intentionally misconstrued by conservative groups stoking racial tensions. Shirley Sherrod says she was forced to step down by the White House even though her comments, in which she says she withheld support for a farmer because he was white, were really part of a story of racial reconciliation. In an interview, Sherrod said the White House's wishes were relayed by an Agriculture Department undersecretary. The incident occurred some 24 years ago when she worked for a nonprofit aid group. Crack Smoking Is Getting More Popular You have to chuckle at this bit of nonsense... While some countries deserve to have their creditworthiness doubted, others, including the United States, do not. The United States is not another Greece, and the likelihood of default or any dire consequences from the present run-up of Treasury debt is minimal." Uh huh. See, this is the argument that is always run. For instance, after WWII it was argued thus. But what's forgotten is that the post-WWII environment was one of ramping industrial output and thus massive GDP growth. Indeed, during the 1950s we recorded insane growth numbers on an aggregate basis. This, of course, provides ...

(July 19) -- All that glitters may not be entirely golden. Officials in Los Angeles and Santa Monica counties are launching an investigation into the business practices of Goldline International, a company that employs conservative politicians and pundits -- from Glenn Beck to Mike Huckabee -- as pitchmen to sell gold. As reported by ABC News, the investigation centers on pressure that Goldline is alleged to have put on customers to purchase limited-edition gold coins, whose value is much less than if the customers bought gold bullion instead. "There are two main types of complaints we're seeing," Adam Radinsky of the Santa Monica City Attorney's Office told ABC. "One ...
Palin erroneously calls Kodiak largest US island [Full Thread] Post Date: 2010-07-19 23:49:06 by go65

CONCORD, N.H. Sarah Palin incorrectly calls Alaska's Kodiak Island the largest island in America in a Facebook post endorsing a Senate candidate in New Hampshire. The Big Island of Hawaii is about 440 square miles larger than Kodiak, where Palin and her family were headed Monday. In endorsing Republican candidate Kelly Ayotte (AY'-aht), Palin also strayed a bit from the facts in praising her for having "won" a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. As state attorney general, Ayotte defended a law requiring parental notification for teenagers seeking abortions. But it was repealed after the U.S. Supreme Court sent it back to a lower court. Ayotte is among seven ...
BP Considers New Plan to Permanently Seal Well (“static kill”) Post Date: 2010-07-19 21:59:35 by Brian S

As scientists on Monday allayed concerns that BPs well in the Gulf of Mexico was damaged, the company said it was considering an alternative plan that could permanently seal the gusher sooner than had been anticipated. Kent Wells, a senior vice president for BP, said the company was studying the possibility of a static kill, in which heavy mud would be pumped into the recently capped well. Also known as bullheading, the procedure would force the oil and gas back down into the reservoir. The static kill does give us a new option, he said at a briefing in Houston. A decision to proceed could be made in several days, Mr. Wells said. He said that the procedure ...
Financial Reform Vote-Buying, Chapter 1 Post Date: 2010-07-19 21:24:17 by go65

Just a quick note on the passage of the financial reform bill, about which I have a piece coming out in the print version of Rolling Stone soon. An analysis by a group called Maplight.org uncovered an interesting fact about the vote. The 38 Senators who opposed the bill in the cloture vote this afternoon received an average of $103,266 in campaign contributions from commercial banks. The 60 Senators who were yea votes took an average of $76,759. Obviously this is just part of the puzzle, but it's worth noting. The pull Wall Street exerts on a bill like this comes via several different avenues -- campaign contributions are one, the potential for future employment (a big factor for ...

Democrats Ready To Pass Jobless-Benefits Extension, With Filibuster-Defying 60th Vote In Place Post Date: 2010-07-19 20:25:56 by Brian S

WASHINGTON (AP) - With a new face and a 60th vote for breaking a Republican filibuster, Senate Democrats are preparing to restore jobless checks for 2.5 million people whose benefits ran out during a congressional standoff over deficit spending. President Barack Obama says, "It's time to do what's right." But first, Obama and his Democratic allies are pressing for maximum political advantage, blaming Republicans for an impasse that halted unemployment checks averaging $309 a week for those whose eligibility had expired. Obama launched a fresh salvo on Monday, demanding that the Senate act on the legislation after a vote already had been scheduled for Tuesday ...
