Harry Reid pulls a fast one to sabotage shale gas development
Post Date: 2010-08-03 13:24:38 by reaganisright

Shale Gas has the potential to bring manifold benefits to Americans: cheap and plentiful, relatively green and clean burning, located in vast swaths underneath our feet (and not offshore or in foreign lands filled with people happy to take our money but who also hate us and who can who can turn the spigot off at will). All good reasons in Majority Leader Harry Reid's mind to sabotage our tapping of this vast reserve of energy: The fight over the Senate offshore drilling "spill bill" shifted Wednesday from the Gulf of Mexico to the mountains of western Pennsylvania, as Republicans slammed the last-minute inclusion of language to regulate a controversial technique to extract ...

The Business Of Being Black In Washington.

Charlie Rangel has been in the US Congress for 39 years. Maxine Waters has been there for 19 years. Clearly too long for both of them. It’s a fact that, for almost that long, being black and in government meant being bullet-proof and untouchable. One notable exception would be former Congressman William Jefferson, who is cooling his heels in the federal penitentiary for bribery and corruption charges. He is the exception rather than the rule, however. Black members of Congress have been characterized by their high-handed tactics and outright arrogance in pulling out the race card each and every time someone said something they didn’t like. It worked for a long time. It worked so ...

Charlie Crist Solidifies Lead in Florida Senate Race

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, waging a campaign as an independent for Florida's open senate seat, has moved out to a strong lead in the state's three-way race, no matter who the Democratic nominee is, according to a poll conducted July 24-28 for New York Times-owned newspapers. This latest survey has Crist ahead of Rubio by 41 percent to 30 percent with 12 percent for Democratic Rep. Kendrick Meek. The race is a little closer if billionaire Jeff Greene wins the Democratic nomination later this month, with Crist leading Rubio 37 percent to 29 percent with 16 percent for Greene. The margin of error is 4 points. The other recent polls of the Senate race: - A Quinnipiac University poll ...

Small Business Owners Say "Bah Humbug!"

Small Business Owners Say "Bah Humbug!" Gee, the recession is all over and the economy is recovering eh? Then perhaps you can explain why the small-business confidence index fell 17 points to -28 in July - an all-time low since the index first was incepted in August of 2003. Future expectations also fell to new lows. And while the "present situation" is a few points off the lows of early 2010, it's just barely-so. CapEx expectations on a 12-month trailing basis are also in the toilet. Remember how I keep talking about these indicators - specifically communications and computers - in the durables index? Well, now you know why I look there. Read the entire report. ...

Mo., Mich., Kan., Choose Candidates In Primaries

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Voters had no shortage of options in choosing party nominees in Tuesday's primaries as they focused on successors to Republican senators in Kansas and Missouri and term-limited Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm. Five Republicans and two Democrats were vying to succeed Granholm in Michigan, a state reeling from the economic downturn. Three Democrats and nine Republicans were running in Missouri's Senate race, and four Republicans and five Democrats were competing for their party's Senate nominations in Kansas. Ballots were even more crowded - with up to as many as nine candidates in some cases - in House races in all three states. With less than three months ...

Angle: The Press Should 'Ask The Questions We Want To Answer' (VIDEO) Nevada Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle's understanding of the political press appears to have even conservative outlets scratching their heads. The Tea Party favorite made another peculiar remark during an interview with Fox News on Monday evening, explaining that she wanted "to have the press be our friend," and "ask the questions we want to answer so that they report the news the way we want it to be reported." This may seem like a candid admission from a candidate who has experienced a rocky roll-out since winning the Republican nomination. But it has left traditionally ...

Controversial 'Ground Zero Mosque' Gets Green Light From NYC Landmarks Commission [Full Thread]

The controversial Islamic center proposed to be built near the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks won a major victory today when a New York City board voted unanimously to allow the demolition of a building to make way for construction. New York landmark commission expected to reject proposal to designate building. The city's Landmarks Preservation Commission's vote rejected the landmarking of a 19th century building with its Italian Renaissance Palazzo style that most recently served as a Burlington Coat Factory. That designation would have prevented its demolition and foiled plans to build a 13-story Islamic community center that includes a prayer room. Critics have called the ...

Obama: An inept, amateurish failure

Like an increasing number of Americans, I’m sick and tired of the ineptitude of Barack Hussein Obama. I’m sick of his lies. I’m sick of his inability to do his job. I’m sick of his abandonment of virtually all of the promises he issued with so much gusto during the 2008 election. I’m mad at myself for ever — even for a cybersecond — buying into the snake oil illusions of this morally corrupt, intellectually-dishonest bastard. As a President, Obama is a monumental failure. As a human being, he is devoid of morality, honesty or ability to accept responsibility for his actions. He’s living proof that affirmative action can — and does — fail ...

Ohio considering illegal immigration legislation

Across the nation a fierce debate is raging over illegal immigration, fueled by the recent passage of a law in Arizona, which says that if a person is stopped by the police for committing an offense, a law enforcement officer can ask for proof of citizenship if they have reason to believe that the person is in the country illegally. The controversy over this proposal has led to clashes between activists and police in the southwest, sparked heated rhetoric among public officials and other interest groups and incited calls by some for a boycott against travel to Arizona. This past week, hours before Arizona's new immigration rules were scheduled to officially become law, a U.S. District ...

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio To Illegal Immigrants: We Have 'Plenty Of Room' For You In Tent Jails (VIDEO)

Just days after Arizona's controversial new immigration law went into effect, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio doubled down on his tough talk, saying he's not concerned about overcrowding when it comes to locking up illegal immigrants in the state. Arpaio explained his position in an interview with MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell on Monday. "I put up tents, Korean war tents in 1993," the Sheriff said. "Seventeen years we've been doing it. I just extended an area of the tents for those what would have been arrested under that new law, but that's on hold, but I still have 200 illegal aliens in our tents anyway doing their time. So, I have plenty of room for any cop that wants to arrest ...

Virginia Attorney General Rules Police Can Check Immigration Status

In a decision that could lay the groundwork for an Arizona-style immigration policy, Virginia's attorney general said state law enforcement officers are allowed to check the immigration status of anyone "stopped or arrested." Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli issued the legal opinion Friday extending that authority to Virginia police in response to an inquiry over whether his state could mirror the policies passed into law in Arizona. "It is my opinion that Virginia law enforcement officers, including conservation officers may, like Arizona police officers, inquire into the immigration status of persons stopped or arrested," he wrote. The decision comes after a ...

WASHINGTON – California Democrat Maxine Waters faces a House trial this fall on three charges of ethical wrongdoing. The charges focus on whether Waters broke the rules in requesting federal help for a bank where her husband owned stock. She denied the charges Monday. Persons familiar with the case said Waters is accused of violating: a rule that House members may not exert improper influence that results in a personal benefit; also, the government employees ethics code, which prohibits granting or accepting special favors for the employee or family members that could be viewed as influencing official actions; and a rule that member conduct must reflect creditably on the House. The latest Wells Fargo/Gallup small business survey is out and it's UGLY. In keeping with other indications that the state of small business is very bad, the survey indicates a level of pessimism about future results that's worse even that during the worst of the crisis. What's more, small firms seem lower spending, lower cash flows, and lower headcount in the future. As you click through the service, think of the contrast with the upbeat earnings and outlooks you've seen from the S&P 500 this quarter. Ariz. Sheriff: Report Of $1M Bounty On My Head

PHOENIX (AP) -- A sheriff in Arizona known for his anti-immigration policies says his office is investigating a report of a $1 million bounty on his head. A spokeswoman for Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says the report was relayed by the FBI and by a caller who told Fox affiliate KSAZ-TV in Phoenix that the threat was from a Mexican drug cartel. Phoenix is the seat of Maricopa County. Lisa Allen says it wasn't known whether the threat actually came from a drug cartel but authorities believe it was made using a disposable cell phone in Mexico. Arpaio says it's not unusual for him to receive death threats as sheriff and an outspoken advocate of immigration enforcement. He ...

If you simply look at the national trends Democrats are in pretty bad shape right now. Barack Obama's approval numbers are hitting record lows in a lot of polling and the balance of the generic ballot surveys show Republicans in the lead. If you look at the trends in the actual races though things are getting sunnier for the Democrats. In June and July PPP polled eight Senate match ups that we had a previous poll to compare to- in all eight the Democratic candidate improved his/her position, by an average of 4.25 points. There's a variety of reason the Democrats' numbers are improving. In Pennsylvania, Ohio, and North Carolina Joe Sestak, Lee Fisher, and Elaine Marshall ...

By CHRISTINE ARMARIO (AP) – 4 hours ago MIAMI — A tropical depression formed far out in the Atlantic Ocean on Monday and early forecasts put it on a track off the U.S. Atlantic seaboard rather than into the Gulf of Mexico, where BP is working to finally plug its blown-out oil well. The National Hurricane Center said the depression, with maximum sustained winds near 35 mph (55 kph), was expected to strengthen in the next 48 hours and could be a tropical storm by Monday night or Tuesday. Dennis Feltgen with the center said conditions over the next five days are not favorable for the depression to develop beyond tropical storm strength into a full-blown hurricane. Feltgen said ...

Politico reports today, “President Barack Obama takes the first steps of a U.S. victory lap on the war in Iraq Monday. . . . In his speech the president … stress[ed] that the end of U.S. combat missions in Iraq on August 31 will mark a key ‘transition’ in the seven-year conflict, the onset of a phase dubbed Operation New Dawn.” In his speech, Obama said, “As a candidate for President, I pledged to bring the war in Iraq to a responsible end. Shortly after taking office, I announced our new strategy for Iraq and for a transition to full Iraqi responsibility. And I made it clear that by August 31, 2010 America’s combat mission in Iraq would end. And that ...

For the last two years, Democrats have blamed George W. Bush for all of the nation’s woes — and that meme has had a surprisingly long shelf life. Even a year after Barack Obama passed his Porkulus plan that supposedly would keep unemployment below 8% and instead lead to a generational nadir in employment, voters still bought the idea that Bush was more to blame for the current economy than the people in charge of Congress for the past four years and the man in the White House for the last eighteen months. Rasmussen says the days of Obama’s whine and moroses have come to an end: For the first since President Obama took office, voters see his policies as equally to blame with ...

Obama’s racism, and the word ‘Nigger’.

I’ve felt that Obama was a racist from the first day I decided to learn something about him. He recently reinforced my view with a careless comment on a women’s daytime gab show. Paraphrasing, Obama says we are mongrels, then quickly adds, so are white people, but we know more about it. It’s this whole, “we know more about it” part that I think shows the inherent racial lens Obama sees the world through. What I learned from the Shirley Sherrod incident, is that there’s probably more people than I thought that think that way, and it’s sad, to me. I have a nephew who feels it’s okay to hit someone for calling him a nigger, but there’s plenty of ...
