Pat Robertson Group To Go To Court Over Controversial Mosque
Post Date: 2010-08-04 17:05:13 by Brian S

NEW YORK (AP) — A group founded by the Rev. Pat Robertson says it will challenge the vote that would allow construction of an Islamic community center and mosque near ground zero. A lawyer with the American Center for Law and Justice says they'll file a petition today in state court against New York City's Landmark Preservation Commission. He says the commission "acted arbitrarily and abused its discretion" by refusing to give landmark status to the building involved. Critics say the mosque would disrespect the memory of those killed at the hands of Islamic terrorists on 9/11. But New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says "we would be untrue to the best part of ...

WASHINGTON – Senate Democrats on Wednesday overcame Republican opposition and cleared the way for a $26 billion measure to help states ease their severe budget problems and save the jobs of tens of thousands of teachers and other public employees. The bill advanced by a 61-38 tally that ensures the measure will pass the Senate on Wednesday or Thursday. The House may return early during from its August recess for a final vote that would deliver the bill to President Barack Obama, his larger jobs agenda curtailed by Republicans who argue against the spending it would entail. Moderate Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine cast the key votes to break the GOP ...

Do you remember when we had the worst economy since the Great Depression?

Employers ramped up hiring in March, driving the unemployment rate down to 4.4 percent, matching a five-year low. It was a surprisingly strong performance in an economy that has otherwise shown signs of sluggishness recently. The new snapshot, released by the Labor Department on Friday, also showed that employers boosted their payrolls by a strong 180,000 in March, the most since December. Workers' also saw their paychecks get bigger. The fresh figures suggested that companies are not feeling a need to dramatically clamp down on hiring in the face of the slower overall economic activity and the deep housing slump. "There's been worry that housing troubles would seep into the ...

GOP Blank Check for War?

High among the blunders of history was the "blank cheque" Kaiser Wilhelm gave Vienna, after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, to deal with the Serbs as they saw fit. Five weeks later, Vienna cashed the check and declared war, after Belgrade refused to submit to all 10 demands of an ultimatum. Russia mobilized; Germany and France followed. And war came, the bloodiest in all of European history with 9 million soldiers in their graves. Since June 1914, a "blank check" given by one nation to another for war has been regarded as strategic folly. Thus it is startling to learn 47 House Republicans just signed on to H.R. 1553 declaring unequivocal "support ...

Obama is such an obvious lightweight. He’s embarrassing. As a former United States Marine, he makes my skin crawl. The spirits of the honorable dead, of this land of the free, rotate in their graves every time he opens his treacherous mouth. Now we see him actually trying to take credit for success in Iraq. This President has made a career out of blaming everyone and anyone for his failing policies, and they are all failing policies. I think the pathological and chronic nature of his lying has so twisted his very nature that he really can’t discern the truth at all. He lives in an altered reality, where he will not see the tidal wave of Democrat defeat rising higher on the ...

Busted, he didn't put up a fight, company officials said. My wife and I decided a year ago to buy a house to take advantage of the $8,000 tax credit for first time home buyers . We were lead to believe that we would receive the $8k with our 2009 income tax return. I have been trying to find out where the money is for almost 7 months now. I finally received my tax return minus the $8k tax credit last week. Their website says that my income tax return amount has been adjusted from $11,155 to $3,188 and does not give more information. Between my wife and myself I think we have contacted the IRS at least 20 times. Each time they give us a different answer, and are very rude. Almost everyone we've talked to has an insulting attitude and are ...

BP reached what it called a significant milestone overnight when mud that was forced down the well held back the flow of crude. That means the procedure known as a ...

Michigan Businessman Beats Rep. Pete Hoekstra In GOP Governor Race

Businessman Rick Snyder (R) easily bested Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) and Attorney General Mike Cox (R) to claim the Republican nomination for governor. Snyder, a former top executive at computer maker Gateway Inc., claimed 37 percent of the vote, and with close to half the precincts reporting was declared the winner by the Associated Press. Hoekstra was second with 26 percent, and Cox came in third with 24 percent. Making his first foray in electoral politics, his win was a surprise to many observers. The race was shaken up in the final weeks by reports that Cox had attended an infamous 2002 party and received lap dances, claims he denied. A witness’s sworn affidavit in a pending ...

I want you to pay close attention to the first sentence of this story from ABC News: The motive behind a gunman's vicious attack at a Connecticut beer distributor that left nine dead has become clearer today after a description of the dramatic phone call the shooter reportedly made to his mother immediately after his rampage. Where to begin? This tripe was written by three, count 'em three so-called reporters: Emily Friedman, Lee Ferran and Ned Potter. What was "reportedly" said during a call that someone "reportedly" made does not make ANYTHING clearer. And, of course, who is the non-biased person who witnessed the call? `Vast Majority' of Oil Gone From Gulf

The “vast majority” of crude from BP Plc’s damaged Gulf of Mexico well is gone and the rest is being broken down by waves and bacteria, reducing the threat of further pollution from the largest maritime oil spill, White House energy adviser Carol Browner said. “The vast majority of the oil has been contained, it’s been burned, it’s been cleaned,” Browner said on CBS’s “Early Show” today. The remaining oil “will weather, it will break down naturally. Mother Nature will do her part.” An estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil leaked from BP’s Macondo well between April 20 and July 15, according to government scientists. BP was ...

I have seen and heard more from our President than I want since Inauguration Day. It is next to impossible to turn on the radio and/or TV and not see or hear his monotonous, repetitive campaign type ramblings. What I am seeing and hearing is about what I expected from this unqualified President based on his campaign rhetoric. But the campaign is over; it is time to govern. There is more evidence every day that his over exposure and incompetence is having a similar effect on most clear thinking citizens. The latest USA Today Gallup poll indicates that his approval rating is at an all-time low of 41%! Monday he gave a talk in Georgia. The “man-child” continued his immature mantra ...

Jackson County coroner Vicki Broadus says an autopsy shows a 48-year-old construction worker died of hyperthermia. He reportedly collapsed Monday while spreading concrete on a Mississippi highway in Moss Point, becoming the second heat death reported in Mississippi since the weekend. In Kansas City, Mo., two deaths are expected to be blamed on the excessive heat, but the health department is still investigating and has not yet released details. States go deeper into debt/a> NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The states are broke, and like many consumers, they're borrowing big time to get out of their fiscal binds. The amount of debt that states are carrying spiked 10.3% last year to $460 billion, according to Moody's Investors Service. The debt is paid for through taxes and fees, making residents ultimately responsible. The median personal share of this burden jumped to $936, from $865 in 2008. (To see how much the tab is in your state, click here.) And it's likely that states will turn to the bond markets even more this year as federal stimulus money dwindles, experts said. After all, officials face an additional $12 ...

Arpaio says the inquiry is focused on his immigration efforts. In a letter, assistant attorney general Thomas Perez gave the sheriff's office until Aug. 17 to turn over documents first requested last ...

BP Starts ‘Static Kill’ on Gulf Well That Caused Record Spill

Aug. 3 (Bloomberg) -- BP Plc started plugging its Gulf of Mexico oil well with drilling mud, a process known as “static kill,” which will help more firmly seal the source of history’s worst accidental oil spill. BP started pumping drilling mud at 3 p.m. local time in Houston, the company said in an e-mailed statement. If the static kill is successful, BP would be able to plug Macondo from the top. The company still needs to complete a relief well to permanently kill the well, National Incident Commander Thad Allen said at a Houston press conference. Government scientists issued revised estimates yesterday that the well spewed 4.9 million barrels of oil, making it the ...

Pipeline Company Offers To Buy Up To 200 Homes In Area Affected By Oil Spill In Michigan River

DETROIT — A company whose pipeline ruptured and dumped hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil into a southern Michigan waterway has offered to buy up to 200 homes in the affected area. Enbridge Inc. chief executive Patrick Daniel said Tuesday the Canadian company will buy homes for sale before last month's spill at their full list prices. It also will buy other homes in the 30-mile-long zone at their appraised values before the spill. Daniel told reporters the idea came from residents' concerns their homes were losing value. The company says it believes the homes have retained their value and the offer should keep speculators out. The oil flow has been stopped and ...

As temperatures soared Monday, the cool water of Shreveport, Louisiana's, Red River lured a group of family and friends to its banks. In an effort to cool off, one of the teens wandered into the shallow part of the river. At some point he slipped into deep water and started to drown. So six more teens went to his rescue. Only one made it back to shore. Shreveport, Louisiana, Fire Chief Brian Crawford said as soon as the first teen was in trouble, the others instinctively rushed to help. "Whether you can't swim or don't swim ... you're just gonna go and do what you think you have to do," he said. The parents stood helpless on the shore and watched as their ...

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Knoxville, Tenn., suspended Casey in April after Warren Tucker of Jeffersonville traveled there to report that Casey had abused him as a youth during the 1970s in his native Tennessee. Newt Gingrich is blasting Dearborn Police for arresting four Christian missionaries at an Arab festival in June, saying it’s an example of Islamic intolerance. He cites the case as one reason why he opposes construction of an Islamic center near Ground Zero in lower Manhattan. In a recent letter, the former Speaker of the U.S. House says that the jailing of the four Christian missionaries is an example of Islamic extremism coming to the U.S. "This is a clear case of freedom of speech and the exercise of religious freedom being sacrificed in deference to sharia’s intolerance against the preaching of religions other than Islam," Gingrich writes in a letter published ...
