Barack Obama promised a new beginning when he became president in 2008. After the ideologically driven incompetence of the Bush years, we were mainly prepared to believe him. Yet politicians that promise root and branch change will nearly always disappoint and, with Mr Obama, disillusionment has been swift to arrive. Judged by his legislative output, the new president has been extraordinarily successful. From healthcare reform to financial services, he's already up there with Lyndon Johnson and Franklin D Roosevelt. And, of course, this week, he's managed to deliver on his campaign pledge to end the war in Iraq; believe it if you will. Yet on the most important issue facing ...

DiNapoli tells state workers how to game pension system By BRENDAN SCOTT Last Updated: 12:36 PM, September 3, 2010 Posted: 10:09 AM, September 3, 2010 ALBANY – Even while telling New Yorkers to pony up $1.3 billion more next year to cover soaring pension costs, Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli is advertising on his official Website how government workers can game the system. DiNapoli’s helpful message “Life Changes: How do I… Prepare to Retire?” provides state workers a veritable how-to guide to pension padding. One jaw-dropping section titled “Increasing Your Final Average Salary — A Raise is Not the Only Way” encourages the practice of overtime ...

Wary Of Tea Party, GOP Attacks Senate Candidate
Post Date: 2010-09-03 14:10:57 by Brian S

WASHINGTON — Delaware Republicans call Senate hopeful Christine O'Donnell a liar who "could not be elected dog catcher" in a fierce attack that underscores GOP fears of the tea party-backed candidate knocking off top recruit Rep. Mike Castle and winning the nomination. Stunned by tea partier Joe Miller's upset of Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Republicans are taking no chances in Delaware, which holds its primary Sept. 14. The party sees Castle, the state's lone congressman since 1993, as the best candidate for the seat long held by Vice President Joe Biden. Republicans circulated audio of a testy, 22-minute interview that O'Donnell had with radio station ...

‘Bush … Come Back, Bush, Come Back’ Why We Suddenly Miss Bush

Various polls report that George W. Bush in some states is now better liked than President Obama. Even some liberal pundits call for Bush, the now long-missed moderate, to draw on his recognized tolerance and weigh in on the Ground Zero mosque or the Arizona anti-immigration legislation. Apparently the erstwhile divider is now the healer that the healer Obama is not. As President Obama’s polls dip, as Congress is widely disdained, and as the economy slumps, suddenly George Bush is missed. Why so? Let me list ten likely reasons. 1) The Obama record. We naturally compare Bush to his chief critic and successor Barack Obama — and find the latter increasingly wanting as time goes by. ...

Obama Pledges New Measures Next Week to Boost Economy

Sept. 3 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama said there is “no quick fix” for the U.S. economy as it emerges from the worst recession in more than seven decades and he promised to lay out new ideas next week to boost growth and hiring. The president, speaking at the White House, again urged Congress to pass a package of measures to help small businesses, including tax breaks and aid to ease credit. “I will be addressing a broader package of new ideas next week,” he said. The economy is moving in “the right direction; we just have to speed it up.” Obama spoke after the U.S. Labor Department reported that private payrolls climbed 67,000 in August, more than ...

Tony Blair thinks George W. Bush was a better president than Barack Obama

At least, that’s judging by the evidence in A Journey. Take, for example, the passage about President Obama’s Cairo speech in June 2009. Blair acknowledges that it was “a brilliant exposition of the case for peaceful coexistence” with the Muslim world, and that the speech was “carefully calibrated”. But his tone rapidly changes to one of disapproval as he notes that President Obama offered the hand of friendship “even to Syria and Iran”. This passage is especially damning (even sarcastic): It was part an apology, and taken as such. The implicit message was: We have been disrespectful and arrogant; we will now be, if not humble, deeply respectful. But ...

The Obama Depression -- Rosy Rhetoric On New Unemployment Numbers Doesn't Match Reality For Many Americans
Post Date: 2010-09-03 12:04:07 by no gnu taxes

On the cusp of America's celebration of labor's place in American life, the Labor Department released its monthly review of employment statistics to relatively optimistic reactions from the White House and the media, despite the fact that 54,000 fewer Americans had jobs at the end of August than did in July. The cause for all the celebration is that the 54,000 net new unemployed Americans were mostly Census workers who expected to be unemployed by September, so the overall increase in unemployment wasn't really that bad. But, a deeper look at the numbers belies the rosy rhetoric. At issue in this month's statistics: the net job loss of 54,000 jobs -- which bumped the ...

WORST. JOBS. PRESIDENT. EVER. August Unemployment Rate Rises to 9.6%

Barack Obama is the worst jobs president since the Great Depression and possibly is the worst jobs president in US History. They wanted to fundamentally change America. They did. The US unemployment rate has not fallen below 10.8 percent in the last 12 14 months according to the Center for Economic and Policy Research. This is unprecedented. From November 2008, the month he was elected, until now, the economy has shed more than an astonishing 4.4 million jobs. That’s worse than Hoover. The AP reported: Private employers hired more workers over the past three month than first thought, lifting hopes for the weak economy. But the unemployment rate rose in August for the first time ...

Stocks Rally, Treasuries, Gold Retreat on Employment Report

Sept. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Stocks rallied, extending the first weekly gain in a month for the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index, while Treasuries and gold tumbled as better-than-estimated growth in private payrolls bolstered optimism the economy will avoid relapsing into a recession. The S&P 500 surged 1.2 percent to 1,103.25 at 9:39 a.m. in New York and is up 3.7 percent this week. The MSCI World Index of stocks in 24 developed markets added 1.2 percent. The drop in 10-year Treasuries sent yields up 12 basis points to 2.74 percent and gold sank 0.8 percent to $1,243 an ounce as investors pursued riskier assets. Oil erased earlier declines, while lead and nickel paced gains in ...

Fiscal Policy: The Fed, Romer, And A Path Forward This amused..... "I believe that monetary accommodation alone cannot buy happiness," Fisher said in the text of remarks to the Greater Houston Partnership. What if it fails to buy anything at all? It might not, you know. Just like drugs always feel good when you first do them, monetary distortions - negative real interest rates, which The Fed freely admits are occurring - always lead to hangovers. We had a housing bubble because of The Fed's actions in 2001-2003. It wasn't an accident. It was an easily-foreseen result. Now we're going to do the dumb again, because, well, we need to be dumb I guess. The problem ...

All the operations were classified as Top Secret and everybody went in wearing sterile clothing with no US insignia or patches, and with no dog tags or ID cards. Our weapons were even sterile, with the serial numbers having been reported as stolen if US weapons,or never logged into the army system if foreign. Not that this makes any difference in this case because Roy went in armed with only a Bowie Knife. I know there has been a lot of talk about John McCain being a hero. Here is a REAL hero.

If the Republican Party had one tenth the courage and determination of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, we might not be having this conversation. Sheriff Joe has stood like a rock throughout attack after attack by the liberal Marxists, and never wavered in his determination to serve the people by whom he was elected. Joe is a gutsy, no-nonsense lawman who says just what he thinks and does what he says he’s going to do, which has been to incarcerate some 10,000 offenders, both domestic and illegal alien. President Obama’s government has singled out Arizona for punishment, for being the first to stand against the statist tyranny of Washington. Eric Holder, at the orders of ...

The unemployment rate went up slightly in August to 9.6%, over the July rate of 9.5%, and overall the economy shed 54,000 jobs, according to the latest report from the BLS. Private sector growth slowed from in July, dropping from an adjusted gain of 107,000 to 67,000, while the government terminated 131,000 jobs: Nonfarm payroll employment changed little (-54,000) in August, and the unemployment rate was about unchanged at 9.6 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Government employment fell, as 114,000 temporary workers hired for the decennial census completed their work. Private-sector payroll employment continued to trend up modestly (+67,000). The news ...

There sure seems to be a lot of this going around, isn't there? Rachel Maddow and Eugene Robinson do some fact checking on Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour's recent bit of revisionist history, attempting to sanitize the racism and rewrite the Civil Rights movement in the South and how the Republicans have been taking advantage of the racial divide in America for decades. Eugene Robinson did an especially good job of following up Rachel Maddow's critique of Barbour's interview with the right wing Human Events and explaining why Barbour is frankly just full of it when he tries to pretend he didn't experience segregation himself growing up and at the schools he ...

Eric Deaton, a Constitution Party candidate running for the seat Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio) is vacating (with the help of endorsements from Tea Party and family values groups) has been indicted for unlawful sexual conduct with a minor that he supposedly met at his church. Deaton responded to the allegations Wednesday, denying charges that he had sexual contact between March 2006 and 2007 with a 15 year old girl that he had first encountered as an elder in his congregation. He also said that he plans to stay in the race despite the timing of the case. WDTN reports that the Perry Township Police Department believes Deaton tutored the girl and invited her to work around his home. Police ...

NEW ORLEANS, La. (AP) -- A mile-long oil sheen spread Thursday from an offshore petroleum platform burning in the Gulf of Mexico off Lousiana, west of the site of BP's massive spill. Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Coklough said the sheen, about 100 feet wide, was spotted near the platform owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy Inc. He said Mariner had deployed three firefighting vessels to the site and one already was in place fighting the blaze. The Coast Guard says no one was killed in the explosion and fire, which was reported by a commercial helicopter flying over the site around 9 a.m. CDT. All 13 people aboard the rig were rescued as they floated in the nearby water in survival ...

Washington (CNN) -- Justice Department civil rights lawyers filed suit against Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona on Thursday after talks collapsed on a deal to provide federal investigators with requested documents. The suit, filed in federal court in Phoenix, Arizona, claims the Maricopa County sheriff has failed to cooperate with the investigation into alleged discrimination against Hispanics by Arpaio's law enforcement officials. The federal action became virtually certain after the sheriff's office last Friday rejected the government's demands in an open letter posted on the county's website. The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division is looking into claims the ...

Sept. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Hurricane Earl bore down on North Carolina with winds of 140 miles (225 kilometers) per hour, prompting coastal evacuations and emergency declarations, while storm warnings were issued in Bermuda as Tropical Storm Fiona advanced. Earl is the third-strongest hurricane ever to travel so far north along the East Coast, Weather Underground co-founder Jeff Masters said today in his blog. Its winds are just 5 mph below the strength of the 1955 and 1961 storms that hold the record, he said. Hurricane warnings are in effect from Bogue Inlet, North Carolina, to the Virginia line and from Westport, Massachusetts, to Hull, including Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket ...
