Former US national security adviser Condoleezza Rice said that she had to yell at then President George Bush not to return to the White House, a potential terrorist target, following the 9/11 attacks, The Daily Mirror reported on Monday. Rice's comments came in a documentary film entitled 9/11: State of Emergency, which is scheduled to air on British television on Saturday, the nine year anniversary of the deadly attacks. According to Rice, Bush insisted on returning to Washington from Florida following the attacks, prompting her to order him away from the White House. "I said, 'You cannot come back here. No defence left against double-dip recession, says Nouriel Roubini The Telegraph ^ | 9/5/2010 | Ambrose Evans-Pritchard The United States, Japan and large parts of Europe have exhausted their policy arsenal, leaving them defenceless against a double-dip recession as recovery slows to stall speed. The US has run out of bullets, said Nouriel Roubini, professor at New York University, and one of a caste of luminaries with grim forecasts at the annual Ambrosetti conference on Lake Como. More quantitative easing (bond purchases) by the Federal Reserve is not going to make any difference. Treasury yields are already down to 2.5pc yet credit spreads are widening ...

By James Rosen | McClatchy Newspapers WASHINGTON The congressional ethics investigation of Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., is broader than previously disclosed and goes well beyond his use of $12 in per diem expense money to buy six decorative goblets in Afghanistan last year. Congressional staff members with detailed knowledge of the probe said ethics investigators are examining Wilson's unusually high number of foreign trips at least 30 in the past eight years and his use of per diem expense money while traveling abroad. Wilson, a relatively unknown lawmaker until he shouted "You lie!" as President Barack Obama addressed Congress last year, has a reputation ...

You are probably familiar by now with this infamous graph published by the White House in January 2009 highlighting their expectations for the impact of the Recovery Act on the rate of unemployment. Far from leveling off at 8% and then declining, the actual unemployment rate ran up to 10% by the end of 2009 and has declined only slightly since to 9.5%, largely due to a decline in labor force participation. This in spite of the rapid passage of the massive $787 billion stimulus bill in February 2009. (Geoff at the Innocent Bystanders blog deserves everlasting credit for being the first to point out this disconnect.) With the White House and other Democrats resolutely sticking to their ...
No Help On The Horizon For Dems -- The Midterm Outlook Remains Grisly Post Date: 2010-09-05 13:40:00 by no gnu taxes

Labor Day is almost here and Democrats are still waiting for the cavalry to arrive. An exhaustive scan of the horizon reveals no rescuers and none of the things Democrats badly need to save them from tough midterm election losses on Nov. 2. There are few signs of any meaningful recovery, and indeed there is more talk of a double-dip recession, plunging the country back into economic trouble between now and the end of the year. Unemployment seems stuck at 9.5 percent, reinforcing the view that last year would have been better spent focusing on the economy than on health care reform. Democrats also needed a public re-evaluation of the new health care reform law. They needed the public to ...

RICHMOND - Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R), scrambling to make ends meet in his plan to privatize Virginia's 332 state-run liquor stores, is considering adding a fee on alcoholic drinks sold in restaurants and bars to help make up the $250 million in annual taxes and profits that state stores currently generate, according to Richmond sources familiar with the still-evolving plan. Under the version of the proposal discussed with industry officials Friday, the drinks surcharge, which would be imposed either as a tax on customers or on restaurants' liquor receipts, would be part of a package of new fees including a per-gallon charge to wholesalers. Democrats and restaurateurs ...

Craigslist was expected to have earned an estimated $36 million from advertising associated with its Adult Services section in 2010at least, that was the case when we first reported the projections from Advanced Interactive Media in late April of this year. You can now expect that number to drop significantly, as Craigslist has removed its Adult Services section for U.S. visitors. The move surely comes as a relief to the various entities that have been petitioning for Craigslist to shut down the sectionincluding human rights groups and more than 17 attorneys general from states across the nation. There's no indication that Craigslist has removed its Adult Services section ...

PHOENIX A claim by Arizona's governor that rising violence along the U.S.-Mexico border has led to headless bodies turning up in the desert came back to haunt her during a stammering debate performance in which she failed to back it up. Gov. Jan Brewer, who gained national attention defending the state's tough new immigration law and warning of increasing border bloodshed, has spent the time since the gubernatorial candidates' debate earlier this week trying to repair the damage done from her cringe-worthy contest against underdog challenger Terry Goddard. "That was an error, if I said that," the Republican told The Associated Press on Friday. "I ...

NPR: 'Recovery Summer' Ends With Economic Pothole Post Date: 2010-09-04 13:13:31 by jwpegler

Whatever happened to recovery summer? This was supposed to be the season the economy heated up, thanks to a wave of public works projects, funded by the government's stimulus program. But summer is coming to an end, and the recovery has not taken root. (The Labor Department on Friday reported a slight rise in the unemployment rate to 9.6 percent in August as more people were looking for work.) And before long, stimulus dollars will be fading like autumn leaves. None of that is encouraging for President Obama, who launched the summer with a crew in hard hats in Columbus, Ohio, on June 18. "Today, I return to Columbus to mark a milestone on the road to recovery: the 10,000th ...

The start of the week saw the left still smarting from the success of Glenn Becks Restoring Honor rally which was held in DC the previous Saturday. As usual, when they have nothing of substance to argue, they resort to the tactic of belittlement. A predominantly white crowd, Dont Tread On Me shirts being worn and exaggerated audience figures were amongst the criticisms coming from the liberals. They were really scraping the barrel for ammunition! They stooped to the lowest of lows when the Huffington Post (who else?) published an article by Beau Friedlander, which offered a $100,000 reward for anyone that could provide scandal evidence that would ...

Washington (CNN) -- President Obama will award the Medal of Honor, the military's highest award for bravery, to Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Richard Etchberger for his valor in saving the lives of three wounded comrades at a then-secret base in Laos in 1968, the White House announced Friday. After Etchberger saved his fellow airmen, he was shot and killed by enemy fighters. His heroics were kept a secret for years because the United States wasn't supposed to have troops in Laos during the Vietnam War. President Lyndon Johnson rejected a nomination for Etchberger to receive the Medal of Honor at the time because of the political trouble it could have stirred up. Etchberger was part ...
