Mass. bullying suspect seeks dismissal of charges

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) -- Grand jury evidence doesn't support the charges against a Massachusetts teen accused of bullying a 15-year-old classmate who committed suicide, her attorney said Wednesday. Michael Jennings said he will ask a judge to review the grand jury minutes and dismiss the charges against Kayla Narey, 17. An attorney for Sean Mulveyhill, another teen charged in the case, said he might file a similar motion. Narey and Mulveyhill appeared briefly Wednesday in Hampshire Superior Court, where both are charged in connection with events before the January suicide of South Hadley High School freshman Phoebe Prince. Four other teens also face charges, and all six have ...

Oregon rescuers dig camel 'Moses' out of sinkhole

OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) -- It was an unusual call for Oregon firefighters: A 1,500-pound camel, named Moses, needed to be rescued. The call came in Tuesday night in Clackamas County after the Oregon City owners of the camel called firefighters to say that Moses had fallen into a sinkhole 6 to 8 feet deep and was possibly injured. The owners - who have several camels and run a children's ministry - had tried to get the camel out themselves but failed. Firefighters had to carefully shovel mud for several hours to free the animal. The rescuers were concerned Moses would break his legs if he'd try to free himself while still partially buried. But Moses was patient, and eventually ...

COVINGTON, La. (AP) -- Police in Louisiana say a woman stripped in the back seat of a cab, demanded the driver take her to her home state of Michigan and when he refused, stole his cab. Covington Police Capt. Jack West told The Times-Picayune that the driver picked up 29-year-old Jennifer Gille of St. Clair Shores, Mich., about 1 a.m. Sunday. West says Gille refused to get out when they reached their destination, stripped and demanded the cabbie take her home. West said the driver went to a police station for help and when inside, Gille drove off. Police found the cab parked about a block away and Gille was still naked. Police booked her on charges of unauthorized use of a movable vehicle ...

FERNDALE, Mich. (AP) -- Ferndale police are seeking a man who wore a plastic Darth Vader mask before pulling a butcher knife and robbing a convenience store. Authorities said the holdup happened about 1:35 p.m. Monday at the Get & Go store in the Detroit suburb north-northwest of Detroit. Police said the man fled after demanding all the cash from the register. But Lt. William Wilson told The Daily Tribune of Royal Oak the suspect made a "significant mistake" because he was in range of a store surveillance camera before he donned the mask. Police described the suspect as a white male, 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, with dark hair and a goatee. He was wearing a blue V-neck sweater ...

Obama urges troops, veterans to claim back pay

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is encouraging service members whose tours in Iraq or Afghanistan were involuntarily extended or who weren't allowed to retire as planned to meet an Oct. 21 deadline to apply for special retroactive pay. Obama signed a bill last year making anyone whose service between Sept. 11, 2001 and Sept. 30, 2009 was extended under what's known as "stop loss" eligible for $500 a month in retroactive pay for every month their service was extended. The bill set aside $534 million for 185,000 service members, but many have yet to apply. The White House released a video Wednesday in which Obama urges them to beat the deadline. Says Obama: ...

Pancakes or prayer? IHOP sues mission over acronym

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The International House of Pancakes is suing another IHOP, the International House of Prayer, saying the church mission shouldn't be allowed to take advantage of the restaurant chain's famous name and acronym. The Kansas City Star reports that the chain says it sued only after the church mission refused repeated requests to stop using the IHOP acronym. Restaurant spokesman Patrick Lenow said the church has expanded and some branches are serving food. The lawsuit was filed last week in federal court in Los Angeles. Gary Cooper, a former Houston attorney who until recently served as the church mission's chief financial officer, said he didn't think ...

2010 on track to become a record hot year

WASHINGTON (AP) -- After eight months, 2010 is running neck and neck with 1998 for the record as the hottest year at this point. The planet's average temperature for January-August was 58.5 degrees Fahrenheit (14.7 Celsius), tying the record heat set for that period in 1998, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Wednesday. While 1998 was the hottest year through the first eight months, 2005 is the hottest full year on record. NOAA's National Climatic Data Center also reported: -It was the third-hottest August on record with an average temperature for the month of 61.2 degrees F (16.2 C). The hottest August was 1998, followed by 2009. -The meteorological ...

One for the establishment: Ayotte wins NH GOP nod

In the last turn of a tumultuous primary season, former New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly Ayotte narrowly won her state's Republican Senate primary, to the relief of party officials in Washington who were struggling to adjust to the demise of their preferred candidate in another big race in Delaware. Seven weeks before Election Day, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday that "turnout and enthusiasm are off the charts" across the nation and would benefit a resurgent GOP on Nov. 2. But at the White House, spokesman Robert Gibbs said "intraparty Republican anger" - most recently evident in Christine O'Donnell's defeat of veteran Rep. ...

KENNER, La. (AP) -- The Obama administration moved to head off another catastrophic leak like the BP disaster Wednesday, ordering oil and gas companies in the Gulf of Mexico to plug or dismantle thousands of wells and platforms no longer in use. The move came as the government's point man for the oil spill said BP's blown-out well should be pronounced dead by Sunday. In Washington, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar issued an order requiring oil and gas companies to plug nearly 3,500 nonproducing wells and dismantle about 650 production platforms that are longer being used. The threat posed by the wells was detailed earlier this summer in an Associated Press investigation. The Gulf ...

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- Authorities in 13 states thought they were acting to curb a public health threat when they outlawed a form of synthetic marijuana known as K2, a concoction of dried herbs sprayed with chemicals. But before the laws took effect, many stores that did a brisk business in fake pot had already gotten around the bans by making slight changes to K2's chemical formula, creating knockoffs with names such as "K3," "Heaven Scent" and "Syn." "It's kind of pointless," said University of Missouri sophomore Brittany May after purchasing a K2 alternative called "BoCoMo Dew" at a Columbia smoke shop. "They're just ...

Tilted toward the GOP from the start of the year, the political environment has grown even more favorable for Republicans and rockier for President Barack Obama and his Democrats over the long primary season that just ended with a bang. With November's matchups set and the general election campaign beginning in earnest Wednesday, an Associated Press-GfK poll found that more Americans say the country is headed in the wrong direction than did before the nomination contests got under way in February. Also, more now disapprove of the job Obama is doing. And more now want to see Republicans in control of Congress rather than the Democrats who now run the House and Senate. The country's ...

No Tea Party: Palin’s Pro-Illegal Alien Candidate Wins New Hampshire While everyone else is talking about Christine O’Donnell’s win in yesterday’s Delaware Republican U.S. Senate primary, I’m lamenting the unfortunate fact that the Tea Party candidate for New Hampshire’s Republican U.S. Senate seat, Ovide LaMontagne, did not beat Sarah Palin’s pro-illegal alien GOP establishment candidate, Kelly Ayotte. And Sarah Palin’s support for Ayotte should be telling. But sadly, her moronic blind followers will never wake up, as I’ve repeatedly noted . . . and as she’s repeatedly proven. I supported LaMontagne. He was the only true conservative in ...

Permit me a brief smirk, folks. I really did see this coming… of course, a little prayer never hurts either. The Delaware Republican primary was about as much of an upset as you could ever want. The Patriot Movement flexed its muscles again and propelled Christine O’Donnell to victory over veteran politico Mike Castle. O’Donnell took an early lead and never looked back. Since we were just talking about ‘the establishment’ yesterday, watching the contortions of the Delaware State Republican Party and the RNC in the aftermath of the O’Donnell victory was both instructive and entertaining. The party elites stayed in character, and one low-level apparatchik ...

See, I Told You So (Again: Housing) Time for me to drag out the old “Whether it’s the sidelined, shadow or current inventory, the issue is there’s more supply than demand,” said Oliver Chang, a U.S. housing strategist with Morgan Stanley in San Francisco. “Once you reach a bottom, it will take three or four years for prices to begin to rise 1 or 2 percent a year.” Yep. In 2007 I've pointed this out - 2013 was the best case for a reasonable bottom, followed by income-level growth only thereafter. For three years I have heard that "housing will be in shortage by 2010" (Cramer), "it's bottoming now" (many people, all through the ...

Home Price Double Dip Begins Published: Wednesday, 15 Sep 2010 | 11:31 AM ET Text Size By: Diana Olick CNBC Real Estate Reporter The trouble with many of the "indicators" we report is that some are pretty current and others are severely lagging. Home sales are generally the former and home prices the latter. That's why, given the combination of the expiration of the home buyer tax credit and the increasing number of loans moving to final foreclosure, we knew that home prices overall would take a hit, but it would take a while. Well we're here. Two new reports out today prove the consequences of oversupply of organic inventory (12.5 months on existing homes in July ...

Combat mission continues as U.S.-Iraqi raid kills 7 in Fallujah By Jamal Naji | McClatchy Newspapers FALLUJAH, Iraq — U.S. and Iraqi forces raided a neighborhood in the longtime Sunni Muslim insurgent stronghold of Fallujah early Wednesday, Iraqi officials said, killing seven people in the deadliest joint operation since President Barack Obama announced the end of the American combat mission in Iraq two weeks ago. The incident underscored how American forces remain engaged in offensive operations despite Obama's declaration that the fewer than 50,000 remaining U.S. troops would focus on advising and training the Iraqi military and police. Iraqi police officials said that the ...

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- The security guards at the headquarters of New Jersey's pension fund have never seen anything like it before: lines of public employees extending out the door and into the street. Day after day, workers come in droves to apply for retirement. They often line up before dawn. The rush has been set off in part by Republican Gov. Chris Christie's campaign in this cash-strapped state to make government employment - and retirement - less lucrative. Since 2008, New Jersey and at least 19 other states from Wyoming to Rhode Island have rolled back pension benefits or seriously considered doing do - and not just for new hires, but for current employees and people ...
