That Was The Week That Was #6. Post Date: 2010-09-18 12:51:50 by Skip MacLure

In this series of weekly articles I usually cover a few of the weeks main story lines. This week, however, a large amount of time has been given in the media to the last of the primary elections
and the fallout that has followed. With only forty five days until the general election, it seems only right that I devote this page to this one topic. It was announced yesterday that Lisa Murkowski, beaten in the Alaska Senatorial primary by Joe Miller, will run in November as a write-in candidate. The bitter irony of this act is that the Republican establishment, of which the Murkowski dynasty could be considered a part, has spent the better part of the week condemning the Tea Party ...

Concerned that an "unholy alliance" has been formed between conservative pundits and disreputable gold dealers, a prominent House Democrat has announced hearings into the retail sale of gold. Rep. Anthony Weiner released a statement Thursday that he plans to "discuss legislation that would regulate gold-selling companies, an industry [whose] relentless advertising is now staple of cable television." The New York Democrat asserts that "Goldline employs several conservative pundits to act as shills for its precious metal business, including Glenn Beck, Mike Huckabee, Laura Ingraham, and Fred Thompson. By drumming up public fears during financially uncertain times, ...

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP A 6-by-8 foot shower curtain with the words END TREASON ARREST ALL ZIONIST JEWS painted on it in black was removed from an I-95 overpass on Thursday (Sept. 16). Hopewell Township police, who removed the sign with the aid of the Ewing-based Prospect Heights fire company, learned of the sign through a phone call from a motorist traveling north on I-95. The sign had been affixed to a board, which was adhered to the steel bridge support beam. Also painted in red on the sheet was 9 11. Prospect Heights firefighters brought an aerial truck to the scene so officers could safely access the location. The motorist told police she ...
The Buckley rule: Charles Krauthammer Post Date: 2010-09-17 17:11:42 by go65

Tuesday in Delaware was a bad day not only for Republicans but also for conservatives. Tea Partyer Christine O'Donnell scored a stunning victory over establishment Republican Mike Castle. Stunning but pyrrhic. The very people who have most alerted the country to the perils of President Obama's social democratic agenda may have just made it impossible for Republicans to retake the Senate and definitively stop that agenda. Bill Buckley -- no Mike Castle he -- had a rule: Support the most conservative candidate who is electable. A timeless rule of sober politics, and particularly timely now. This is no ordinary time. And this is no ordinary Democratic administration. It is highly ...
We Can't Afford Bush Tax Cuts: David Stockman Post Date: 2010-09-17 16:44:28 by go65

Don't extend the George W. Bush tax cuts, David Stockman, the director of Office of Management and Budget under President Reagan, told CNBC. "We couldn't afford those tax cuts back when they were implemented by Bush. We can't afford them now," said Stockman. "This is $300 billion a year. I think both parties are dreaming. Our fiscal situation is far worse than they're really telling the public, and since they're unwilling to cut taxes, and since we can't keep borrowing a trillion and a half dollars year in and year out, it's time to face the music." Meanwhile, the White House continues to cite a report from the Congressional Budget Office ...

. And it didnt take more than a couple of shakes of a lambs tail either. For loosely organized, totally independent entities the Patriot groups are far faster and far more efficient than the US government under Obama, Reid, Pelosi and the Cirque Du Marximus. Some would argue that it wouldnt take all that much, and while Im willing to grant some truth to that, I think all of us would acknowledge that our own party has a lot to do and not much time in which to do it, without taking any resources away from the drive towards November. Theyre talking about as many as 100 seats which could fall to Conservative candidates in the House of Representatives. Our ...

BP will see its ruptured Gulf of Mexico oil well "completely sealed" on Saturday, the British energy giant said, plugging once and for all the runaway well that caused the largest maritime spill in history. "It is expected that the MC252 well will be completely sealed on Saturday," the company said in a statement Friday, hours after US authorities announced that engineers intercepted the shaft with a relief well, through which they will now pump cement into and around the shaft in a "bottom kill" operation that has been months in the making.

Michigan’s Proposed Road-Side Drug Tests May Target Medical Pot Users Post Date: 2010-09-17 12:05:47 by Brian S

A bill working its way through Michigan's legislature could make the state the first in the nation to allow road-side drug testing of drivers without a warrant, but some critics say it may be a way to jail legal pot users under the state's new medical marijuana law. Under a bill proposed by Republican state House Rep. Rick Jones, a noted anti-marijuana advocate, police officers in the state would be issued drug kits they could use during traffic stops, avoiding the current procedure which requires the officer to seek a warrant before testing. Supporters of the proposal say it will go a long way to taking intoxicated drivers off the roads, but civil liberties advocates point out such ...

4:42 a.m. Wednesday, September 15, 2010 In the midst of his campaign for governor, Nathan Deal faces such dire financial troubles that he must sell his home to avert foreclosure or bankruptcy. Even if Deal liquidates all his assets, however, he still might be unable to repay a nearly $2.3 million business loan, documents reviewed by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution indicate. The loan comes due in full Feb. 1 less than one month after Deal hopes to take office. Deals troubles center on a failed business venture by his daughter and son-in-law. Deal and his wife, Sandra, invested about $2 million, but lost their entire stake when the business failed. The Deals also guaranteed ...
Uncommon Common Sense About the Economy Post Date: 2010-09-17 09:07:09 by go65

More than 300 economists and policy analysts just released a statement warning Congress and the administration that bold action is needed to put people to work and get the economy going. The statement -- "Don't Kill Jobs and Growth in the Name of Deficit Reduction" -- was released by the Institute for America's Future (which I co-direct) and is available here. In the partisan election debate, with Tea Partiers ginning up hysteria about incipient socialism and out of control spending, the statement offers a series of common sense propositions. 1. It is time for bold steps to put people to work We have an economy marked by faltering growth and mass unemployment. 30 ...

Washington (AP) -- Authorities in Washington say police shot a man who pointed a gun at them on Capitol Hill. U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider says a lookout went out around 5 a.m. Friday for a man with a gun. Officers later saw the man, who pointed the gun at them. Schneider says the officers opened fire after the man refused to drop his weapon and that officers fired because they were in "fear for their lives." The man, whose name has not been released, was brought to a hospital. His condition is not immediately known. No other injuries were reported. -0- Sep/17/2010 12:18 GMT

With his pregnant wife Erin in the passenger seat, Wood swerved his car to put himself directly in the path of the oncoming SUV -- a decision that ultimately cost him his life, but ...

Audit of Federal Stimulus Funds in Los Angeles Shows $111 Million in ARRA Grants Has Only Created 55 Jobs Email Comments 4 I released two very disappointing audits today of how the City of Los Angeles has used American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds. The audits looked at the how the two departments that have received the largest amount of ARRA funding so far - the Department of Transportation (LADOT) and the Department of Public Works (DPW) - have used those funds and how many jobs were created. Los Angeles has become the largest City in America to conduct an audit of how ARRA funds have been expended. DPW has received $70.65 million and created or retained 45.46 jobs, ...

SEATTLE (AP) -- The Seattle cartoonist who started "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" with a satirical cartoon in support of free speech has reportedly gone into hiding on the advice of the FBI. Seattle Weekly editor-in-chief Mark D. Fefer announced in Wednesday's issue that Molly Norris' comic would no longer appear in the paper. Fefer wrote that the FBI advised Norris to move, change her name and wipe away her identity because of a fatwa, or death sentence, issued against her this summer. The FBI declined to comment. Norris' cartoon inspired a Facebook page that caught the attention of authorities in Pakistan, who banned the social networking site in response. Most ...
Expiring Tax Cuts Hit Taxpayers At Every Level Post Date: 2010-09-16 17:33:31 by Brian S

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Here's some pressure for lawmakers: If they don't reach agreement on extending soon-to-expire Bush-era tax cuts, nearly all their constituents back home will get big tax increases. A typical family of four with a household income of $50,000 a year would have to pay $2,900 more in taxes in 2011, according to a new analysis by Deloitte Tax LLP, a tax consulting firm. The same family making $100,000 a year would see its taxes rise by $4,500. Wealthier families face even bigger tax hikes. A family of four making $500,000 a year would pay $10,800 more in taxes. The same family making $1 million a year would get a tax increase of $52,300. The estimates are based on ...

Sep 16, 2010 In a reflection of the battered economy, the number of people without health insurance rose sharply last year to 50.7 million an all time high according to data released Thursday by the Census Bureau. That pushed the rate of uninsured Americans to 16.7 percent last year from 15.4 percent in 2008, when there were 46.3 million uninsured. It was one of the largest single year increases since the Census starting tracking the figure in 1987. Nearly every demographic and geographic group posted a rise in the uninsured rate with the exception of children, who remained stable at about 10 percent. The sharpest jumps were in the Midwest and South, although all ...
In Win For Democrats, US Senate Passes Small Business Credit, Tax Cut Bill Post Date: 2010-09-16 13:20:28 by Brian S

WASHINGTON - The Senate has passed a bill to create a $30 billion U.S. government fund to help open lending for credit-starved small businesses, cut their taxes and boost federal loan programs for them. The 61-38 tally rewards President Barack Obama and his Democratic allies in Congress Hill with a long-sought victory and sets the stage for a final vote in the House, which is likely to approve it for Obama's signature. The new fund would help community banks increase lending to small businesses hurt by the recession and the 2008 Wall Street crisis. The bill would also provide about $12 billion in tax breaks over a decade to both large and small businesses and also boost the Small ...

An official from the Defense Criminal Investigative Service told John Cook at The Upshot the Pentagon plans to take action against every employee or contractor identified in a four-year-old investigation into individuals who used their credit cards or PayPal to buy child porn from a foreign Web site. In July, Raw Story reported on claims that the Pentagon had failed to investigate dozens of employees identified as possibly having purchased child pornography. In an investigative report earlier this month, The Upshot found that a 2006 ...
