'Pledge to America' Attracting Little Attention on GOP Campaign Trail Post Date: 2010-10-05 23:19:25 by Brian S

When the "Pledge to America" was rolled out two weeks ago with a media blitz, Republican leaders trumpeted the 45-page booklet laying out their political agenda as a map to victory at the polls in November. Since then, however, not many Republicans running for office are referring to the document on the campaign trail -- and some admit they haven't even read it. The Washington Post looked for mentions of the pledge out on the stump and concluded that "relatively few Republican candidates across the country appear to be adopting it as a guiding vision, much less incorporating it into their campaigns." That may be because the pledge doesn't seem to be resonating ...

Tea Party-backed Alaska Senate candidate Joe Miller (R) thinks federal unemployment insurance is constitutionally questionable. But it turns out his wife benefited from it in the early part of the decade -- after she left a job working for him. According to a resume that she submitted to the state of Alaska in 2009, Miller's wife, Kathleen, worked for him briefly in 2002. In a statement yesterday, the Miller campaign acknowledged that she received unemployment benefits after she left. "After leaving my office Kathleen did receive unemployment benefits for a short period of time," Miller acknowledged. Unemployment benefits are typically only given to workers who are fired ...

California officials are cutting off use of state-issued welfare debit cards at casinos across the country and on cruise ships, in the wake of Times reports that the aid cards have been used to spend or withdraw millions of dollars in benefits at popular vacation spots including the Las Vegas strip and on ships sailing from ports around the world. More than $69 million meant to help the needy pay their rent and clothe their children was accessed in all 49 other states, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam, according to data obtained by The Times from the California Department of Social Services. The department instructed the vendor that administers the debit card program to make the changes ...

This is the worst sort of betrayal I57;ve ever seen,61; one source close to Sarah Palin said in describing the leak of an e-mail that Todd Palin sent to Joe Miller, the Alaska GOP Senate candidate. The source noted that some of Miller57;s campaign staff have connections to 2008 Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, and suggested that these staffers have been advising Miller to distance himself from Palin.Based on information in a post by notorious Alaska anti-Palin blogger Jeanne Devon, one pro-Palin source in Alaska deduced that the leak could only have come from Miller57;s staff 52; unless Miller himself leaked the e-mail.UPDATE: Cubachi, Sissy Willis and other Palin supporters ...

Alaska politics blogger Mudflats presents an e-mail, apparently sent from Todd Palin to GOP Senate nominee and former Papa Grizzly Joe Miller. Todd is not very happy with Joe!
The problem: On Fox last month, Miller declined to officially endorse Sarah Palin for president. Which prompted (within hours of the appearance) this message from Todd to Miller, SarahPAC treasurer Tim Crawford, and Thomas V. Van Flein, Miller and the Palins' attorney.
Joe and Tim,
Hold off on any letter for Joe. Sarah put her ass on the line for Joe and yet he can't answer a simple question " is Sarah Palin Qualified to be President". I DON'T KNOW IF SHE IS.
Joe, please explain how this endorsement stuff ...

A federal inspector general is looking into whether the Obama administration used confidential taxpayer information in an effort to attack a political opponent, Koch Industries. The review was revealed Tuesday by Sen. Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, two weeks after he and a handful of other top Senate Republicans called for the Treasury Department's inspector general for tax issues to look into the matter, saying either administration officials had illegal access to taxpayer information or were inappropriately speculating in public about the company's tax status. Charles and David Koch, brothers who control the Kansas-based company, are libertarians who have used some of their wealth ...

Poverty tightens its grip on America. The U.S. Census Bureau reports poverty increased to 14.3 percent during 2009 from 13.2 percent the previous year. The percentage of Americans living in poverty is the highest level since 1994. The Census Bureau reports one in seven Americans or 43.6 million people lived in poverty during 2009, up from 39.8 million during 2008. The poverty threshold for a family of four during 2009 was set at $21,954 by the federal government. So what are the solutions? Certainly, more jobs and more Americans staying in school and finishing their education come to mind. How about strengthening families and the institution of marriage? Coming to a Chipotle near you: a lower counter to help more people see their burritos being made. In a case generating national attention, a federal appellate court last month ruled that Chipotle Mexican Grills 45-inch-high wall screening its food-preparation counter was too high for Maurizio Antoninetti, who uses a wheelchair. He couldnt watch his food being prepared, so he was denied the full Chipotle Experience. The decision applies only to the Western states covered by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, but Chipotle already has begun lowering the 45-inch walls nationwide. It declined to discuss the cost. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, U.S. ...

SOUTH FULTON, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities say firefighters in a far western Tennessee city let a mobile home burn down because the owner didn't pay a $75 yearly fee for fire protection. Jeff Vowell, city manager of South Fulton, told the Union City Daily Messenger that the city fire department let Gene Cranick's doublewide trailer home burn last week because he didn't pay the subscription common in many rural areas. Cranick's home is outside city limits, but South Fulton offers fire protection to nearby residents for a fee and did protect a neighboring house that paid. Police say Cranick's son was so angry he later went to the fire house and punched the chief. City ...

The chairman of the Tea Party of Nevada resigned Tuesday after a recording was made public capturing Republican Sharron Angle badmouthing GOP leaders during a meeting with the shadowy group's U.S. Senate candidate. The exit of chairman Syd James is another blow to the candidacy of Tea Party of Nevada nominee Scott Ashjian, who has been denounced by state tea party leaders who say he has no connection to the movement that advocates limited government and tightfisted public spending. In a statement, James said he was endorsing Angle, whose uneasy relations with national Republicans were laid bare in the tape, which Ashjian recorded secretly and later released to the Las Vegas Sun ...

Two organizations that advocate for tougher campaign finance rules are asking the Internal Revenue Service to investigate the tax-exempt status of a Republican-allied group that has been airing millions of dollars in political advertising. The group, Crossroads Grassroots Policy Strategies, is incorporated as a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization under IRS rules that permit it to conceal the identity of its donors. It and a related group have spent nearly $14 million on ads attacking Democratic or supporting Republican Senate candidates in eight states. The Campaign Legal Center and Democracy 21 filed a complaint with the IRS Tuesday, asking the agency to determine whether Crossroads GPS ...

Republican candidates now hold a three-point lead over Democrats on the Generic Congressional Ballot for the week ending Sunday, October 3, 2010. This is the smallest gap between parties in roughly a year. This is the first time during 2010 that the GOP edge has fallen below five points. Still, while the margin has varied somewhat from week-to-week, Republicans have been consistently ahead in the Generic Ballot for over a year, and it has run as high as 12 points. When Barack Obama first took office as president ...
