From a Maine House, a National Foreclosure Freeze [The House That Exposed Mortgage-Gate]
Post Date: 2010-10-15 19:14:15 by Capitalist Eric

DENMARK, Me. — The house that set off the national furor over faulty foreclosures is blue-gray and weathered. The porch is piled with furniture and knickknacks awaiting the next yard sale. In the driveway is a busted pickup truck. No one who lives there is going anywhere anytime soon. Nicolle Bradbury bought this house seven years ago for $75,000, a major step up from the trailer she had been living in with her family. But she lost her job and the $474 monthly mortgage payment became difficult, then impossible. It should have been a routine foreclosure, with Mrs. Bradbury joining the anonymous millions quietly dispossessed since the recession began. But she was savvy enough to ...

Think you know Sarah Palin? The former Alaska governor has been in the spotlight ever since John McCain named her as his running mate on Aug. 29, 2008. Yet, while practically everybody has an opinion about Palin, not all of those opinions are grounded in reality. Many of them are based more on a "Saturday Night Live" caricature than on the living, breathing, 46-year-old mother of five. The real Sarah Palin is a complex woman who has risen in no time from obscurity to the stratosphere of American politics, fusing celebrity and populism in novel ways. Now that she's laying the foundation for a possible presidential run in 2012, it's worth taking a moment to separate the fact about Palin from ...

Reid: 'I Never Said Iraq War Was Lost,' Angle is a "Liar"

You know Harry Reid, right? He's an incumbent Democratic Senator who is running for re-election in Nevada. He's facing Sharron Angle, a Republican challenger, who is currently in a dead heat with him. You see, I'm a little confused because there must be another Harry Reid who said the war in Iraq was lost, because this Harry Reid now says he never said that. According to Reid's campaign site, Republicans and Sharron Angle have lied about his actual quote. On his website, they contain the "real" quote: "The war cannot be won militarily. It can only be won politically." According to his campaign, Reid said that March 3, 2007, referencing a supposed ...

Angelo R. Mozilo, who presided over the spectacular rise and devastating fall of Countrywide Financial Corp., struck a deal Friday to avoid going to trial next week on accusations of investor fraud and insider trading. The 71-year-old Mozilo and two former top Countrywide executives settled a civil lawsuit brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission over the demise of the Calabasas company, once the nation's top originator of home loans. Mozilo agree to pay $22.5 million in fines to the SEC and to turn over $45 million in ill-gotten gains to former shareholders who have sued him. Miserable failure: Harry Reid’s debate performance

A consensus appears to be emerging amongst the pundit class when it comes to Harry Reid’s performance in last night’s debate with Sharron Angle: He stank. The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Sherman Frederick wrote: [...] Angle mopped the floor with Reid. She hit hard on a variety of topics; showed she had the fire to be a U.S. Senator; demonstrated a command of the issues; and, of course, stayed gaffe free. Reid meanwhile looked tired. Sounded entitled. He mixed up the Department of Education with the Department of Energy. Couldn’t find his notes for the close and generally fell back on talking points on far too many questions. The Las Vegas Sun’s Jon Ralston, not a ...

A $205 billion bomb Another NY liability newly visible

New York state and local governments' liabilities for retiree health coverage run to the hundreds of billions of dollars -- a burden that's only now coming into full view. Governments in the state spend billions a year on health-insurance for their retired employees -- a benefit that will never be available to the vast majority working in the private sector. Unlike pensions, which are at least partly pre-funded through large investment pools, retiree health care in New York's public sector comes out of annual budgets on a "pay-as-you-go" basis. In New York City alone, the tab for that has risen 50 percent in the last five years. It'll hit $1.8 billion in fiscal 20 ...

California NOW President: 'Meg Whitman Could Be Described As A Political Whore' [ Liberal Hypocrisy ]

Last week, the National Organization for Women and the PAC of the California NOW chapter took heat for their endorsement of state Attorney General Jerry Brown (D) over Meg Whitman (R) in the gubernatorial race in the wake of comments by a Brown aide that Whitman was a "whore." At the time, national NOW President Terry O'Neill said that anyone who "from here on" calls a woman a "whore" should be fired. She might want to have a talk with California NOW President Parry Bellasalma, who today told TPM in response to a question that "Meg Whitman could be described as 'a political whore.' Yes, that's an accurate statement." TPM had called ...

I swear to God Almighty: Mortgage Backed Securities are America’s Herpes- the gift that keeps on oozing. Last Friday, Bank of America announced that it was suspending all foreclosure proceedings, presumably until further notice. Other banks have already suspended foreclosures in a whole truckload of states. A nationwide moratorium on foreclosures might soon happen- which would be a big deal: Global Financial Crisis, Part II- Longer, Wider and Uncut. “It’s oozing from where?“ “Man, you guys are fucked.”But the mainstream media- surprise-surprise- has downplayed the whole shebang. They’re throwing terms out there into the ether, but devoid of context or ...

Holder says the Justice Department strongly opposes California's Proposition 19 and remains firmly committed to enforcing the federal Controlled Substances Act in all states. Illinois officials "caught lying" about military ballots

An amazing revelation over at BigGovernment.com. They report Illinois has been “lying” about whether or not military ballots mailed on September 18 as required by Federal law. They lied to the DOJ. Obviously if they did lie, this is not a happy day for America’s servicemembers. But take special note of why the lie worked: because the Department of Justice deploys a Keystone Kops enforcement operation. You can actually read the extent of the Justice Department’s inquiry to Illinois here. It isn't much. After the Illinois board of elections tells the DOJ that the ballots mailed in time in all the counties, “Thanks very much for the update” represented the ...

Severely Wounded Soldier Describes Fort Hood Spree Associated Press Everything had stopped. Not a whisper, not a cough, not even the sound of someone shuffling in his seat could be heard as Staff Sgt. Patrick Zeigler, his cane gripped in his right hand and an extensive scar visible across his closely shaved head, carefully made his way to the witness stand. Then, in a strong though sometimes halting voice, Zeigler described Thursday to a military investigating officer how four gunshots left him the most seriously injured among the survivors of last year's deadly shootings at Fort Hood. Maj. Nidal Hasan, 40, an American-born Muslim, has been charged with 13 counts of premeditated ...

By Steve Miletich and Jennifer Sullivan Seattle Times staff reporters John T. Williams Seattle Police Chief John Diaz and the department's Firearms Review Board have reached a preliminary finding that an officer's fatal shooting of woodcarver John T. Williams on Aug. 30 was not justified, according to sources familiar with the case. Diaz and the board will make a final determination after the completion of a pending court inquest into the shooting. It is rare for a shooting by an officer to be found unjustified. After the preliminary finding was reached last week, the officer, Ian Birk, was ordered by Deputy Chief Clark Kimerer, who oversees the review board, to surrender his ...

The Education of Barney Frank

Political competition is a wonderful thing. To wit, it is even making a more honest politician out of Barney Frank—well, sort of. Mr. Frank is facing his first serious electoral challenge since 1980 from Marine officer and business executive Sean Bielat, and the liberal baron is making some remarkable concessions to the public mood. For example, he seems newly sympathetic to the plight of small business, saying that he now favors repealing ObamaCare's infamous new Form 1099 reporting requirements for detailing purchases with any contractor above $600. Mr. Bielat has been hammering away on the issue since Democrats in Congress have refused to repeal the provision, but Mr. Frank ...

Frank haunted by 2003 remarks on lenders

BROOKLINE, Mass., Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Remarks about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac by U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., during a 2003 committee hearing have become a campaign issue in 2010. Frank said then that the two government enterprises were strong enough to withstand any threats -- and that if they did get into trouble they would not get a government bailout. Sean Bielat, the Republican seeking Frank's seat, has a clip from 2003 on his campaign Web site, "Retire Barney," and Frank has been struggling to explain himself, The Boston Globe reports. Frank acknowledges what he said in 2003 was "wrong on both counts." He said he was defending Fannie and Freddie because he ...

Ole Miss Picks Bear For New, Un-Confederate Mascot

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) -- It took seven years, but the University of Mississippi has a substitute for a beloved and reviled mascot who brought the Confederacy to mind. The new guy is still a rebel, only cuddlier. "Rebel Black Bear" won 62 percent of the vote in a final poll, the school announced Thursday. Its athletic programs will keep the Rebels nickname. It has been more than a decade since Ole Miss began stripping away its images of the Old South. Confederate battle flags were first to go. Next was mascot "Colonel Reb," the goateed Southern planter who cheered on the Rebels from the sidelines since 1979. Tradition dies hard in Oxford, where tens of thousands of fans ...

Ralph Nilssen's five beautiful kids are about to get more expensive. Regence Blue Shield sent him a letter saying rates are going up - way up. Regence put the blame - at least in part - on the new and controversial health care law. "Obama care went into effect and my rates went through the roof," said Nilssen. In the letter, Regence told Nilssen his $532 monthly premium could nearly triple next year. "I just sat back and said you've got to be kidding me," he said. "If they're angry and confused - it's easy to understand," said Washington Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler, who has fielded more than 100 angry calls since Regence mailed its ...

Judge allows states' healthcare suit to proceed

U.S. states can proceed with their lawsuit seeking to overturn President Barack Obama's landmark healthcare reform law, a Florida judge ruled on Thursday. U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson had already indicated at a hearing last month that he could not uphold parts of a motion by the Justice Department to dismiss the lawsuit, led by Florida and 19 other states. "In this order, I have not attempted to determine whether the line between constitutional and extra-constitutional government has been crossed," Vinson, of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida, wrote in his ruling. Opponents of Obama's overhaul of the $2.5 trillion U.S. healthcare system ...

A writer for the gay advocacy blog AMERICAblog Gay says that when he applied to be a participant at Thursday afternoon's MTV/BET town hall with President Obama, MTV representatives asked him for a "lighter question." After asking what topics I was personally interested in, they asked what question I'd want to ask President Obama if I were in a room with him. I gave a sample question to give them a sense of where I'd go, but not anything specific (something about the role that federal policy plays in preventing bullying in light of the recent attention to suicide). The next question was: What lighter question would I ask the President -- something related to pop ...
