One nation, under fraud

Tomorrow, a bank—not your bank, but any bank—could evict you from your home. Even if you didn’t know the bank was foreclosing. Even if your mortgage is paid off. Even if you never had a mortgage to begin with. Even if the bank doesn’t hold a single piece of paper that you signed. And major banks not only know this fact, but have spent millions of dollars to defend it in court. Why? The answer starts with a Jacksonville homeowner named Patrick Jeffs. In 2007, Deutsche Bank sued Jeffs for his home, which is a necessary step in the process of foreclosing on a homeowner in the state of Florida. Curiously, despite the fact that he immediately hired a law firm to defend his ...

Feds Searched Daily Kos, NPR For Threats To Obama, Memo Reveals

In the lead-up to President Obama's inauguration, federal investigators conducted a major sweep of online social networks in search of threats. In the process, according to a memo unearthed by a privacy advocate group, feds singled out numerous popular web sites and social networks to be scanned for threats and other information, including the liberal blogging community Daily Kos and National Public Radio. A government memo obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by the Electronic Frontiers Foundation (EFF) shows that federal investigators were encouraged to "friend" as many people as possible on social networks as a way of crowdsourcing intelligence operations. ...

Angle to Hispanic children: “Some of you look a little more Asian to me”

As more of the video surfaces from GOP Senate nominee Sharron Angle's meeting last week with Rancho High School's Hispanic kids, the more bizarre it gets. Elsewhere on this blog, I have posted the video of her claiming an infamous still she and Louisiana Sen. David Vitter used in an ad, an incendiary image of Hispanic thugs, may not have been an image of Hispanics. That was nutty enough. But at the same meeting, according to video I have obtained and taken by one of the Hispanic students, she said some of the kids looked more Asian. Strange? You be the judge. Video at right. Transcript is here: "So that’s what we want is a secure and sovereign nation and, you know, I ...

Colorado Senate: Buck (R), Bennet (D) Are Nearly Tied (Buck collapses)

Incumbent Democrat Michael Bennet and his Republican challenger Ken Buck are in a virtual tie in Colorado’s U.S. Senate race as the candidates prepare for a nationally televised debate on Sunday. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in Colorado shows Buck with 47% support to Bennet’s 45%. Four percent (4%) prefer another candidate in the race, and another four percent (4%) are still undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.) These findings move the race from Leans Republican to a Toss-Up in the Rasmussen Reports Election 2010 Senate Balance of Power rankings. This is the closest the race has been in eight months of surveying. Less than ...

Security guards for Joe Miller, the Republican Senate candidate from Alaska, handcuffed and detained the editor of an online news site at a campaign event in Anchorage on Sunday. A statement by the Miller campaign described the editor, Tony Hopfinger of Alaska Dispatch, as a “liberal blogger” who was trying to create a “confrontation” with Mr. Miller. The campaign also accused Mr. Hopfinger of assaulting someone after the event, a question and answer session with voters, and of “making threatening gestures and movements towards the candidate.” The Anchorage Police responded to the incident, which took place at a public middle school. The police released Mr. ...

U.S. Homebuilder Confidence Rose to Four-Month High

Confidence among U.S. homebuilders rose in October to the highest level in four months, a sign residential construction is stabilizing at depressed levels. The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo confidence index increased to 16, exceeding the most optimistic forecast in a Bloomberg News survey, from 13 the prior month, data from the Washington-based group showed today. The gauge was projected to rise to 14, according to the median estimate in the Bloomberg survey. Housing construction will be slow to recover after the end of a home buyers’ tax credit and as foreclosures flood the market with cheaper homes. Unemployment near a 26-year high of 10.1 percent is making it ...

It started out with Ken Langone, one of the four partners who created Home Depot in 1979. Langone, the third generation grandson of immigrants, helped build I-495, the Long Island Expressway through New York, as a construction worker. Years later, he rose to become the director of the New York Stock Exchange. His experience in construction, the desire to bring quality do-it-yourself materials to the public affordably with his partners, saw Home Depot sprout up across America. Despite the challenges that face business start-ups, Home Depot flourished. Nowadays, Langone believes the burgeoning regulatory environment and policies raining down on business directly out of Washington D.C., are ...

Local chambers of commerce across the country are seeking to distance themselves from the US Chamber of Commerce, or are even breaking formal links with the national group, in the wake of controversy over its role in the current election cycle. The Nashua Telegraph in New Hampshire reports that the Greater Hudson Chamber of Commerce has severed its links with the national organization over what it sees as the Chamber's increasingly partisan tone. “We didn’t like the fact that the US Chamber was supporting particular candidates,” Greater Hudson Chamber executive VP Jerry Mayotte said. “We don’t think it’s good business practice to do so. ... Foreclosure Freeze Could Drag Down Property Values, Housing Chief Warns Published October 17, 2010 | FoxNews.com Housing Secretary Shaun Donovan said Sunday that a national freeze on foreclosures would "do far more harm than good," pushing back against those calling for a blanket moratorium following claims that lenders may have used faulty paperwork to evict homeowners. Donovan called the alleged corner-cutting "shameful" in a column published Sunday, days after attorneys general in all 50 states opened probes into the matter. He backed banks that have imposed "voluntary moratoria" but stopped short of supporting a broader ban. "A national, blanket ...

In a long review of three publications on the subject for The New York Review of Books, David Cole ponders this continually vexing question. Allegedly conceived, Cole writes, as a "hole into which suspects would for all practical purposes disappear, never to be heard from again," the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay was set up in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks by the Bush administration. It incurred widespread domestic and international outrage since it first began accepting prisoners in October 2001. And yet it has survived virtually unchanged well into the supposedly more internationally conscientious Obama presidency, despite the fact that the president said he'd ...

Democrats Shrank US Spending, Deficit In Last Fiscal Year, Figures Show

The US deficit shrank nine percent last fiscal year but still topped one trillion dollars, the government said Friday in a report seized on by Democrats' rivals weeks ahead of mid-term elections. For the 2010 fiscal year that ended on September 30, the government had a budget shortfall of 1.294 trillion dollars, down 122 billion dollars from the previous year's record-setting high. Revenue rose and spending fell amid recovery from recession and as President Barack Obama's Democratic administration wound down some of the emergency measures taken to restore growth. The final figures "underscored the administration's commitment" to cutting the massive government ...

How many recall the eight years of George W. Bush’s two terms in office during which he was constantly derided as being too dumb to be president? He was deemed “a frat boy” and yet Bush had graduated from Yale University and went onto to secure a master’s degree from Harvard Business School. When his grades were compared to Sen. John Kerry during his campaign for reelection, it turned out he had higher scores. We can’t compare Barack Obama’s grades to Bush or anyone else because they, along with his birth certificate, and indicators of his scholastic achievements have been hidden from public review. This is not, however, a defense of Bush. This is about a ...

Two weeks before Election Day, Democrats fear their grip on the House may be gone, and Republicans are poised to celebrate big gains in the Senate and governors' mansions as well. Analysts in both parties say all major indicators tilt toward the Republicans. President Barack Obama's policies are widely unpopular. Congress, run by the Democrats, rates even lower. Fear and anger over unemployment and deep deficits are energizing conservative voters; liberals are demoralized. Private groups are pouring huge sums of money into GOP campaigns. An almost dizzying series of Democratic messages has failed to gain traction, forcing Obama to zigzag in search of a winning formula. At a ...

Federal Court Ruling: CAIR Must Answer to Fraud Charges by Five Former Clients

A federal judge in the U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia has denied a motion to dismiss complaints by five former clients of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). CAIR is a Muslim organization previously named as a Muslim Brotherhood-Hamas front group by the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office in the federal criminal trial and conviction of a terrorist funding cell organized around one of the largest Muslim charities, the Holy Land Foundation, which raised funds for violent jihad on behalf of Hamas. CAIR had asked federal court judge Paul L. Friedman to dismiss the fraud cases on several grounds, but the judge refused CAIR’s request in its entirety. (Judge ...

Gesturing toward the magnificent steel, glass and concrete towers of Chicago's Loop during a conversation with the Chicago Sun-Times editorial board, Mayor Daley noted that "almost 95 percent" of the skyscrapers were private-sector constructions. Then he declared this self-evident truth: "I don't think Democrats realize how important business is to our economy and to our cities." While Democrats have long struggled under the mantle of being anti-business, President Obama and the Democratic Congress have acted as if they're not particularly bothered by it. They pushed tax and fee increases, imposed new regulations through thousand-plus page bills and ...

Endangered House Democrats Campaign Against Pelosi

Several endangered House Democrats think they may have found a way to escape voters' wrath in next month's midterm elections: run against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Call them the anti-Pelosi Democrats who are openly opposing Pelosi for another term as speaker if their party can somehow maintain control of the House. Republicans are widely expected to make big gains in the Nov. 2 elections. Two Democrats, Reps. Jim Marshall of Georgia and Bobby Bright of Alabama, have even taken out ads saying they won't support Pelosi in the next Congress. Marshall told Fox News he's not running against Pelosi per se; just seeking to neutralize the resonant issue Republicans have created ...

Barbara Billingsley, June Cleaver on ‘Leave It To Beaver,’ Dies at 94

Barbara Billingsley, who played the kind-hearted mother on the classic TV show “Leave It To Beaver” has died. She was 94 years old. Billingsley reportedly passed away at her home in Santa Monica, Calif. from polymyalgia, a rheumatoid ailment. As June Cleaver on “Leave It To Beaver,” Billingsley not only created a mold for TV moms that other actresses would follow, she also conjured up an image of infinitely patient and pearl-necklace-wearing parenthood that real-life moms would try, often with frustration, to emulate. “Leave It To Beaver” ran on television from 1957 to 1963, but found small-screen immortality through reruns. On the show, Billingsley’s ...

Christine O'Donnell Tells GOPers: 'I've Got Sean Hannity In My Back Pocket'

WASHINGTON -- Christine O'Donnell may not be a witch, but she knows how to use scare tactics to raise money, top Republican strategists and officials here tell me. They say the Delaware Republican is loudly complaining about how they won't support her -- and they are not -- as a way to generate angry, send-them-a-message donations from her Tea Party base. Specifically, according to two top GOP insiders, she said at a strategy meeting with DC types last week: "I've got Sean Hannity in my back pocket, and I can go on his show and raise money by attacking you guys." And that was precisely what she was doing on the radio today. On Hannity's popular afternoon ...

By Glenn Kessler Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, October 15, 2010; 10:43 PM Not many authors on a book tour manage to snag a visit with the president of the United States. But Condoleezza Rice is no ordinary book author. The former secretary of state and onetime national security adviser met one-on-one with President Obama at the White House on Friday afternoon, after a week of television appearances promoting "Extraordinary, Ordinary People," her memoir about her parents. The White House said Obama wanted to discuss a range of foreign policy issues with her. Later, at an evening appearance at the Aspen Institute, Rice said she and Obama "covered the ...

U.S. Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index Unexpectedly Declined in October

Confidence among U.S. consumers unexpectedly declined in October, with Americans more pessimistic about current economic conditions. The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan preliminary index of consumer sentiment decreased to 67.9, the lowest since July, from 68.2 in September. Economists estimated an October reading of 68.9, according to the median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey. Unemployment projected to remain above 9 percent through next year may keep weighing on sentiment and make Americans reluctant to ramp up their spending, which accounts for 70 percent of the economy. Retailers like Target Corp. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. are responding with more discounts and using ...

A Republican-controlled House might be the best thing that could happen to President Obama. So writes Bruce Bartlett, an official in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations, in a piece in The Fiscal Times. Bartlett makes several points. One, the Founders liked the idea of gridlock because it meant that, to be successful, legislation needed the support of coalitions and both chambers. Two, when one party controls Congress and the White House, as Democrats do for the time being, or as Republicans did during George W. Bush's administration, excesses tend to occur. He points to the massive spending on two wars and the expansion of social spending on the Medicate prescription ...
